Thursday scent of the day 9/5

Posted by Robin on 5 September 2019 270 Comments

Finally, Almost-Friday, plus, Freddie Mercury’s birthday. (And a quick reminder: our next swapmeet is coming up on Saturday!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the best summer-weight not-churchy incense, Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate. (Ok, if you asked me another day, I might say L'Artisan Passage d'Enfer.)

Reminder: on 9/6 we're doing Best in Class...you decide the category, then wear the best.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In the last drops of TDC Tokyo Bloom. Boring green, citrusy scent. Refreshing for the nano second it lasts. Money saved!

But perhaps best in the “boring green short-lived” class? Anyway, sorry.

Ha! It easily classifies as one of the best in the boring category! For the short-lived category Chanel 28 La Pausa, EdT and SL A la Nuit are the winners! ?

How about 8 sprays of La Pausa? That’s my magic number ?

I usually have 10 sprays of La Pausa on clothes and it lasts a bit longer. However, I can spray the whole bottle of A la Nuit at once and 20 minutes later is totally gone!

I’m in Memo Italian Leather today – best in the category of Leather With An Unusual Twist. LOVE it. When my travel spray is gone, I might have to swallow hard and spring for a FB. Argh. Okay, maybe just another travel spray. 🙂

I don’t like leather scents but I did enjoy Azuree. I have tried a lot of samples from the Memo line but not one struck me. I think you should spring for a FB or maybe do a split to make it more affordable.

Seconding the split idea. I’ve heard so much about this line of leathers. I’d be tempted to blindbuy 5-10mls. On the flip side, I’m sure splits are quite time consuming and not really enjoyable…

I’ve done “splits” as swaps, but never a split in the real sense. I don’t mind making small numbers of decants and shipping them, but the idea of figuring out the actual cost and how to monitor payments? Just not my thing. If I ever do break down and order a bottle, I’ll keep you two in mind for an ensuing swapmeet. 🙂

Best in Class of Diptyque (of the few I have sampled): Volutes EDT.

This one is very persistent on me. Just keeps going and going and going…Which is not a bad problem to have, per sé! Although I love it, there is something that starts to bother me hours into wearing it, and I’m not sad when it finally leaves me. So weird. Does this happen to anyone else?

    NPN Below:

Update on the Fenty Hydrating Foundation for those interested: Was very late putting anything on my face yesterday (biked 15 mls and then was exhausted- took me an hour to get into the shower?), but wore it from about 3pm to bedtime. Stayed looking fresh and dewey the entire evening. It did oxidize a bit on me, so I went and got another sample 2 shades lighter because I will soon be losing color on chest and neck due to the high collars and long sleeves required for FALL!?? I’d say if your winters are very dry and you have normal to dry skin, give it a try. It feels very nourishing and doesn’t highlight dry patches or pores on me. I’m very smitten with it. I’m going to try with a BB tomorrow to see how it looks. Rihanna, when you gonna put me on the payroll?! ?

I was just moved to go research Casmir, because this seems right up my alley! Although it’s widely available for a good price, all I could find is 3.4 oz. Way too much. Is it anything like l’Elephant, by chance?

No, not to me. I can’t hack the elephant at all, it flattens me.
Casmir is medium to light weight, amber spicy goodness. No cumin. Hope this helps.

Good to know! If it was similar to the l’Elephant, no need to check out Casmir. If it’s in the same family but different, my lemming groweth…?

        • Lisa D says:
          5 September 2019 at 1:03 pm

It is similar in that it focuses on fruit and spice, but it is much more sheer than L’Elephant (and has more peach).

I love Casmir. It’s a warm, ambery/woody vanilla. I think the sandalwood in it figures in the drydown. Not heavily, but it’s there. It could be office-friendly, but lightly dabbed. Maybe spray on a cotton ball and dab on. Or (what I do) spray it on and wipe some off with a tissue. Then you have just enough to notice yourself (I usually spray on my chest so it wafts up to my nose), but hopefully not enough to offend anyone.

So…update: Got myself a sample from Sephora and here are the verdicts:
11 year old (not related): “It’s kind of rude to say this, but you look like an old lady that had Botox.”
11 year old daughter: “Yeah, you have an old lady’s skin tone now.”

Ouch! Maybe I need to consult a nearby 11 year old? How do YOU think it looks?

My update it this: I love the finish, botox’d old lady or not, but I’ve tried a second color that initially matched, but it oxidized again. Both colors were a neutral undertone, but one oxidized quite yellow and the lighter shade oxidized quite pink. I’m a heart broken “look like I’ve just been botox’d old lady” ☹️ Sorry it didn’t work for you. Do you think it’s a color/undertone issue, or it just doesn’t mesh well with your skin?

Yep, I can see that. I don’t get baby powder, but do get powder. I have sent off a lot of this in swaps and such, so I don’t have a whole lot left. Plus, they discontinued the EDT version a while back, so I don’t want to end up kicking myself for sending it off. I’ll just use it infrequently. ?

Thread got so intricate I had to reply here: I think we had the same issue re. Oxidizing (I tried shade 230 I think. There was hint of oompa loompa to me, which confused me, I thought maybe I had gotten a warm shade but I saw the SA making the sample).
I liked the light weight feel of it, and that to me felt similar to the ordinary serum foundation, which I also just got (in warm, which is too yellow for me, they were out of neutral).
Lookswise, I’m not sure, but I have never really liked any foundation on me so might not be a good judge. I’m looking for that super sheer product that will make me look flawless without showcasing forehead creases and taking the color out of my face ?. Re. The Botox comment: these kids are clueless what that actually looks like and probably commented on the fact that I had covered my under eye area and they were missing my impressive under eye circles….?
Lastly: my eyes are not happy with the foundation. Stings and burns.

Holy cow! 230 was the first color I got, too! We were Oompa Loompa Twins! ?‍♀️
I tried 185 (neutral) and it oxidized pink-ish!?! I would say if it bothered your eyes, give it a big miss, no matter what. It feels lightweight to me, but the coverage is quite high. It sounds like you’re looking for something a bit more sheer anyway. Sorry it didn’t work for you. I may try one more shade and see how it goes, because I love the finish. ✌️

    Hi everyone!

I’m back from my long weekend visiting my friends in Dallas, feeling rested and refreshed. Of course, I found a bit of perfume while I was there….

I’m in Dzing! today, from round-cap bottle I found still in the box. This perfume is amazing, perfectly balanced.

I also found a bottle of Talisman EdP, Missoni Acqua (a lovely white floral that’s wildly expensive on eBay for some reason), and another mostly full bottle of L’Feu d’Issey. Swoon! I found that last one in an antique mall for… $8! Just when I think I’m becoming jaded, I find something that makes my heart beat faster.

They aren’t too old considering the brand itself is from the 70’s, but it was before the IFRA reformulations hit. I don’t know if Dzing! was changed but it smells right to this nonexpert.

I haven’t been a perfume fan long enough to remember the round caps personally; Dzongkha was one of my very first post-NST perfume was Dzongkha, which I think was the first new one after the change in packaging. I’m in Casmir on the left arm and Geisha Noire on the right, both for the first time. There’s a definite advantage to going through every.single.decant.and.sample.you.have. You find all sorts of things!

Casmir is lovely and I’d like to have more. The Geisha is making me sneeze, but I’ll stick with it and see if it calms down.

In other news, the pupster got hold of a cicada in the yard yesterday evening. It was still alive. She had a very funny look on her face when she realized the thing in her mouth was BUZZING. “Mama! What do I do now??!

In Prelude to Love, and must be anosmic to much of it. This one gets a lot of love here. This one went on like an elegant, not overly sweet neroli with citrus that includes some of the peel… but then poof! Reapplied, and it is back… but for how long?

Random additional unrelated thoughts–the name reminded me of the play Prelude to a Kiss, which I saw at the Helen Hays Theater in New York in the early 90s, and totally loved. Looking it up now, I see that it was also made into a movie with Meg Ryan. I just watched the trailer, which looks very cheesy. But the play was so good, I’m going to try to track down a way to stream the flick.

I really just wanted to wear Iris Ukiyoe because it’s a pretty, office friendly no brainer for a warm day like today, though it’s cold in my office. I think it could be best in class for pretty perfumes. It manages to be simple but not boring.

I’m kind of sad to look at the forecast and see the temps start dropping this weekend only because it means summer dress season is almost over. I’ve only started to regularly wear skirts and dresses a year or two ago and feel like I have a lot of catching up to do because I’m so comfortable when I wear them. At least I can wear tights with some of my dresses to transition into fall.

Oh, and my Indigo Perfumery order should be arriving today! I’m planning to try Bengale Rouge tonight.

Currently testing DSH Vanilla Bourbon, which is a very nice, but not quite perfect spicy winter vanilla, (I now need to try the Estate Vanilla mentioned elsewhere in this thread); BPAl Anteros, which went on interesting, and became a insistent, annoying scrubber; Fueguia 1833 Bibiloteca de Babel, a cedary dusty incense which I really enjoy, and am coming to feel may be FB worthy, and Orlov Blue Lili, which I hadn’t really worn at all before, and which is lingering nicely with changes on my arm – was mostly rose, now is mostly something else floral (lily???). If it wasn’t sort of drowned out by the resideual Anteros stuck on the sleeve of my sweater, I might have a better idea of what it is. I will definitely give this it’s own full from the sample wearing, to see what’s what with it. 🙂 None qualify for a best in class pin, unless we are giving pins for most annoying scrubber?

It is just nicely satisfying, isn’t it? Some perfumes are so well balanced, so that every stage is excellent. This is like that – every time I sniff, I have that “oh, this is nice” reaction. No mis-steps, no blanks spots, no boring interludes of “yep, still there…” 🙂

I went to the dentist today and go back in 2 weeks to get some work done. Funny thing though… I think my lady dentist officially pawned me off on the man dentist (I only mention gender to differentiate which dentist is which) things have been a little tense between lady dentist and me since the rude dental hygienist incident. So today, I get there, and was asked 3 times if I wanted to see man dentist today and for the other work. I said, It didn’t matter to me, and I ended up with man dentist. I’m fine with him, but I think it was rotten and sneaky of her. I should add, my appointment today was scheduled to see her, so it wasn’t a scheduling issue. Anyway, sotd is Narciso edp white cube. Went shopping through my various samples this morning. I have a tendency to get samples and then just hoard and not try…

Chose Sadanne. Which I think might be a best-in-class strawberry. Or, at least among what I have, given I have no other strawberry-forward scents. I like that it doesn’t seem that sweet and has a bit of booziness. We will see how it dries down.

In the realm of binge-watching, I am all caught up on The Good Place and ready for the final season to start toward the end of the month.

I do that with samples as well. And then, of course, are the samples with no label and it’s a complete guessing game!

Sadanne sounds interesting…strawberry is a favorite smell, especially farmers market strawberries — the real deal!

Oh Freddie! I still miss your voice, Adam Lambert is not the same. Along the lines of dead singers, I have had a little loop in my head of departed folk singers doing their greatest hits. Who remembers Jim Croce, Steve Goodman, and Phil Ochs? Phil’s “No More Songs” is one of my favorite songs.
Perfumewise, I’m wearing Rhubarb Ecarlate and sorting stuff for Saturday’s swap. Chorus starts tonight so I needed to wear something that will be gone by this evening given their “no scent” policy.

I am lucky that my choir does not have a no scent policy, though I still try to choose something fleeting and close to skin. Rhubarb Ecarlate is a good choice for that. Our fall practices begin in two days, so I am just a little behind you.

Errrrr…. I can only hope that now:

Good morning, America, how are you
Don’t you know me, I’m your native son
I’m the train they call The City of New Orleans
I’ll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done

replaces this dastardly loop (and it has literally been this section of the song) that’s been playing in my head for FOUR DAYS:

      Totally unprepared, are you,
To face a world of men!
Timid and shy and scared, are you,
      Of things beyond your kin!
You need someone older and wiser
      Telling you what to do!

Has anyone tried the new Baikal Leather Intense by Nicolai?
I got a sneak peek over the summer when I visited Twisted Lily in Brooklyn. The Nicolai team was in the US (so sweet & fun to chat with!) and he gave me a small sample. I wish I could say I loved it but nope, not for me. It actually barely registered on my skin and the notes I could smell just didn’t work.

Lonesome Rider. This is the first time I have smelled this perfume and although it is lovely it is also, somehow, very orderly. Not at all what I thought it would be, maybe because it is too polished and tidy. It made me long for Skive, my rough’n’tumble lost love. I like LR but prefer both Bapteme de Feu and Ys-Uzac Immortal Beloved, for density and spice. I think my best in class Swiss perfumer is going to be Ys-Uzac.

These are belated things from yesterday:

I tried Jicky again yesterday evening. I was definitely getting lavender, and “Mediterranean herbs,” which I also think of as culinary herbs. 🙂 And I think something of a vanilla, too. But much more the lavender and herbs, at least from what I was getting last night. They persisted for a while, too.

And I made it to an Asian grocery and got a big container of lychee jellies. Robin and I should meet up somewhere so I can give her a few. 🙂

Also, I tried a thousand-year-old egg (not actually a thousand years old). Um — it was better than I thought it would be. I’ll have to figure out some starches and greens that go well with that flavor.

I don’t know where Dr. Seuss got his ideas, but he certainly was imaginative. 🙂

It took me a while to work up to trying goat curry, but I really enjoyed the taste when I did, as I mentioned to Koyel one day. I got a cookbook titled Chai, Chaat and Chutney: A Street Food Journey Through India, and sometime I will borrow a friend’s kitchen and try some of the recipes. Many look interesting, and I already have a lot of the spices.

Are those the hard boiled eggs with black translucent instead of white egg white? They’re good with tomatoes and also good with both mixed in rice congee. That said though, after reading about how they’re made, I now refuse to eat them ?

      • neyronrose says:

Yes, the eggs with black translucent “egg white.” The yolk was a bit runny, actually, and a dark, dull green in color. Don’t tell me how they’re made. I don’t want to know. The packaging said “Lead free” and I was like, “Okay…”

I tried a salted, boiled duck egg today, which I assume has a different and less involved process. (Still don’t want to know about the thousand-year-old egg processing.) I had that with tomatoes and chicken salad. That was very good with the tomatoes.

On the sweet side, I got ice cream mochi, chocolate and red bean. I usually only find the sort of mochi that doesn’t need to be refrigerated or frozen in grocery stores. The “silky chocolate, Kyoto style” mochi ice cream is yummy. I like red bean flavoring, too. I don’t know what kind of bean it is, but I find it tasty. 🙂

Though I rarely cook, I have cookbooks on cuisines around the world. And if I don’t have a recipe offhand, our county library has many, many shelves of cookbooks.

Still, folks who are down the Shore are making preparations for tropical storm force winds and possible flooding. ?☁

Have you heard about miniature horse as a therapy animal? It’s real! What would you do if your row mate has one? I think the rule is it has to be toilet trained but have you ever seen a horse with diapers? I haven’t because I am rarely exposed to horses. What if it did #1 or #2? I don’t think any amount of perfume could mask the stink. I think this whole therapy thing has gone too far!

Oh my gosh, I was just thinking about this yesterday. I was at the car service place and a lady came and sat down with a dog. I didn’t ask but assumed it was her therapy dog. The thing is… for various reasons, I get very anxious around dogs and do my best to not really get close to them. So, one persons therapy became another persons anxiety. Who has the right of way in this situation? Of course, I defered to the other lady, and went outside.

I’ve had people tell me they’re afraid of dogs when they see T-Rex enthusiastically aiming to meet those acquaintance, and I make sure to keep her on a short leash right next to me on a down or sit stay. Good practice for her, and helps the anxious person relax a bit.

I’d love for my seat mate to have a mini horse! And I’d rather be exposed to horse poop and pee (versus people poop and pee), because at least I don’t have to worry about disease transmission. Plus, I think horse poop smells great! I realize I’m probably in the minority, but still! And if it does poop, I’m sure some on board gardener would be happy to collect it for fertilizer, right??

Thank you Jalapeno! I figured that since we didn’t go to Vegas, I actually saved money.. lol.

My hubby’s bd is next week so we usually go somewhere for both but not this year.
