Friday scent of the day 8/30

Posted by Robin on 30 August 2019 269 Comments

Hey, it's Friday and National Slinky Day! Our community project for today: wear your most frivolous fragrance. Extra points if it's frivolous AND an enduring classic.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: maybe not quite an enduring classic, but the best I could come up with while staying frivolous and weather-appropriate — Diptyque Oyédo.

Reminder: on 9/6 we're doing Best in Class...you decide the category, then wear the best.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Goldfield & Banks Pacific Rock Moss. Wow! A great marine scent. Love the blue color of the juice! Perfect for a very warm, sunny summer day. Heading to the shore for a long walk and lunch after work today. I have not had the chance this season to be near the water. Counting the hours to be out of here! ☀️??

    Happy Friday, everyone!

So envious of your after-work plans! I love the coast and haven’t walked on a beach in what feels like years. Have a lovely time!

Thank you, SheriG! As a beach lover, I used to spend lot of time at the beach before. For the past 2 years, I have not gone more than 2-3 times. I am so excited I can make it today!

It is so good for the soul to get outside and walk near trees or water – just out in nature!!

Does it smell like dirt? Beets smell (and taste) like dirt to me. I love them cooked or pickled, but I had beet juice once from an (obviously) uncooked beet, and while I didn’t hate it, it strongly tasted like cool, shady dirt.

Jumping in here to say that I did think Demeter Beetroot smelled like dirt – but good dirt, like the dark black stuff that’s really great for growing things.

I’m in Eau Claire des Merveilles. My frivolity tie-ins: (a) I’m wearing it by itself mostly to drain it to the same level as the bottle of Eau des Merveilles (I layer them two-to-one so Claire is behind), definitely a frivolous reason to wear it; and (b) quite often when I reach for the bottle, Barbra Streisand pops into my head singing On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, which of course is followed by remembering the very frivolous film by that name with her and Yves Montand (I think?). (I actually love that movie.) Anyway, Eau Claire is beautiful on its own and I should wear it this way more often for THAT reason and not just because it makes me think silly things. Happy Friday!

You have to ask…a lot of times they don’t display it. But…if you like it, I recommend trying to get vintage. Today’s version is watered down to my nose.

Test it ltsg…but bear in mind it’s been reformulated and isn’t the same as the original from the 1970s…

Yes. It’s one of those “crunchy green” chypres from the 70s but it’s softer and more floral than Azuree. Imo it’s worth looking for older versions of the genre because of the current ban on oakmoss.

Guerlain Insolence EDP – frivolous name and playful scent.

I am not having a very good week so far. Injury on Sunday (and it is expected to take weeks to heal), malfunctioning fridge today (and since the fridge is old, I am worried that it is beyond repair and I will have to buy a new one). Ugh. I am trying to lift my mood with fun scents – Rosa Pop on Tuesday, Eau de Rhubarbe Ecarlate on Wednesday and Insolence today.

Smellbent Dead of Winter – a frivolous unsniffed buy from a couple of years ago (light anise/vanilla/musk) and worn in the dead of summer. (Or at least toward the end of summer!) Definitely not an enduring classic and although I like it now and then, I’m already bored with it today and planning to move on to Hermes Jardin Sur le Nil later. Happy Friday, all!

PS For those who like licorice-y fragrances, Reglisse Noire is MUCH more interesting.

My frivolous pick is Alien Flora Futura. An impulse buy of a FOURTH Alien that I certainly didn’t need, but I had a gift card I wanted to use instead of save. A perfume acquired solely for the sake of it.

I am wearing Guerlain Jicky today, drinking a cup of linden blossom tea, and trying to adjust to American time after being in the Mediterranean area for 13 days.

Last night we had my parents and my husband’s parents over for dinner. It was exhausting (because I am still trying to unpack and wash clothes), but a fun evening. I am glad I got to see them. It was a wonderful trip, but I started to miss my family towards the end of it. Tonight we are having dinner with our son and our daughter in law. We missed his birthday being out of town, so we’ll be celebrating his birthday a few days late.

    Happy Friday !

I’d consider everything outside of the essentials (food, shelter, warmth, etc.) to be frivolous, so I have been spot on the community project all week. Please notify the historians, because it’s unlikely to happen again soon. ?

I’m in Indochine today and currently making my pour over, which smells better than I do, but the combo is out of this world!

Yesterday, I biked 15 miles with my new ear buds, which I quite like. They cost a scosh more than my last ones, but are wireless Bluetooth that sit in their charging case when I’m not using them. Hoping that will decrease the chance of them disappearing in this bottomless pit of a van. Baby T-Rex had a day of rest, other than some light chuck-it ball, because she was feeling a bit droopy after her vaccine.

Trying to decide if I should zip down to Fargo today and check it out. We’ve been in a state park across the river in Minnesota that last 4 days. Doggo has especially enjoyed not traveling because she get a bit tired of navigating. She takes that job quite seriously. I wish she would curl up and go to sleep like most dogs, but she has to make sure I take the correct turn. A canine back seat driver…?

    Happy friYAY!

I looove the mingling of coffee and whatever perfume I’m wearing when I make my pour-over. I bet Indochine is fabulous with coffee.

She is the best. I ran into a guy the other day while I was out with her. Of course, she wanted to go say hello, but he told me right off the bat:
        Him: “I don’t like dogs!”
        Me: “OK”
T-Rex: Wag, wag, wag as she looks at him adoringly
Him: “That one’s not too bad, I guess.” Gives her a grudging pat on the head.
T-Rex: CHA-Ching! I won another one over! Lots of wagging and dancing, with eyes sparkling!
        Me: ??

          Hehe, can’t resist her charms!
I met my brother’s dog for the 1st time on my L.A. trip last week. When I got to the door my SIL instructed me not to make eye contact with him. At all, ever. I made the mistake of doing that when he jumped up on the couch next to me and then nearly lunged and me. The dog is extremely territorial and I found out later that he actually bit my father last year! I love dogs, but I was actually afraid of this guy and for some reason they think obedience training isn’t necessary since he’s fine with the family ?

Well, that’s a terrible thing waiting to happen. Hate to think of the damage it may cause to a child. No dog needs INTENSE obedience and behavioral help more than a dog like that. Sad to say, your brother is creating a dog that will probably end up being euthanized. No dog should ever bite a human, unless it’s in self defense. That behavior will escalate. Really, no obedience “class” will even deal with aggressive dogs anymore (and his behavior towards you IS aggression). They just don’t want the liability. The dog and your brother need a behaviorist before something terrible happens.

Yikes! My friend has a dog that is also unpredictable though not territorial but she has worked with her tirelessly to improve – but when we stayed with them, I kept telling my kids “do not even look in the direction of that dog” even as the dog was laying her head on their legs to be petted. I agree, a dog that actually bites rather than snaps is a real problem.

            +1 Deva!
Behavioral trainers can do wonders, and it sounds like your family members are dedicated enough to get more training. It isn’t an obedience issue it is ‘reactivity’ I know first hand and it is often anxiety based. Thank goodness you are ok.

I got them at Best Buy. A bit pricey (at least for me) but they were the only “mid-range” model they had on hand. The selection went from about $14 to >$200! Probably cheaper on amazon, but I didn’t want to wait.

Well, any time you want to switch doggo’s for a week or two, let me know. Mine doesn’t have an off button, but there is a “pause” button when dinner is done and sun goes down. Just a minute ago, it was suspiciously quiet, so I checked in with doggo, who I find is in the middle of the fire pit, chewing on a discarded rib bone.? If you’d like to supervise this one, let me know. I’d be grateful a a dog that sleeps when traveling. And I don’t have a kitchen per sé, so your girly would be a delight!

My frivolous pick is Salvador Dali Laguna, a mini of which I claimed in a freebie meet for the bottle and because I enjoyed Kevin’s review of it:
https://freebox.it.com/2009/08/19/salvador-dali-laguna-fragrance-review/%3C/a%3E%3Cbr /> I like the fruity top notes, but the warm, creamy base feels a bit heavy today. All in all, it’s trashy good fun ?
Looking forward to the long weekend!

Not even one week since I left the death spiral project.
    Whoo hoo!
The clean out continues – have habitat for humanity and another group coming next week.
Facial later today. I have been wearing goop#1 now called church and have been getting compliments galore. ya never know.
My sister and her son, DIL and grandkids are all in Florida. My best friend in Ft. Lauderdale. All in harms way of the hurricane. Year after year I have played the waiting game of hurricane season. Sister out picking up some foster kitties from local shelter to care for although Miso the alpha kitty might not like it.

Deva, your home on Gulf Coast, yes?
Have been going through this for over 50 years since my parents were part of the wave of New Yorkers to move there.
They were close to Indian Rocks Beach until they moved up to by near my sis.
        Rather deal with earthquakes
Goop#1 is a GP scent. It’s quite lovely, close to skin and incense, a little smoky. I love incense based and this one is wearable under all circumstances.

Wearing it because I have a decant and sent some to a dear friend. She loves it and isn’t a fan of incense. I am wearing it to see if a) I can smell it and b) if it lasts….when I wore it in the past the answer was no to both a and b.

I’m probably overthinking this but am having difficulty establishing any relationship between Slinky Day, frivolous and classic. If frivolous means lacking in seriousness or importance then it wouldn’t be enduring, or a classic, would it? Yes, definitely overthinking.

So I’m sticking with just the classic, vintage Coty L’Aimant, just beautiful on what feels like a fall morning. Getting ready to celebrate 8 birthdays tonight! My grand twins will be 12 tomorrow and have been spending the last couple of days of summer vacation with me. My 2 older cats, known as The Sisters, were just 4 – one of the two friends who gave them to us and rescued their pregnant mother’s life – just had a birthday and they are both coming over – they also have the Two Brothers. And, last but not least, it’s nearly a year since I found Little Bear, the tiny motherless Bad Kitty lookalike, probably 3-4 weeks old, and learned how to bottlefeed a kitten! She’s made a home with us, too, and on an unknown date, she just became 1 years old.

Perhaps celebrating 3 human and 5 feline birthdays together could be considered frivolous? No doubt, it’s pretty silly!

Wishing everyone a bit of fun and frivolity this weekend!

SotD is Confetto. I looked through all my scents to see what I had that seemed frivolous and this was it. Maybe because the juice is pink, or maybe because the name almost looks like confetti? Who knows.
Finished my paper this morning and it feels good to have that weight lifted off my shoulders. This afternoon involves pedicures for me and my girls, then lunch and shopping. A real ladies day. Tomorrow we will drop my older daughter off at college and I am oddly so at peace with it. A total 180 from how I was a year ago when I had to sneak away to my bedroom, shut the door and have good cry. She did so well last year…academically, socially, mentally…all of my anxiety is gone. I will definitely miss her, she’s been a true joy to have around this summer, but as my dad has reminded me, we raise children to send them out into the world. As hard as that may be.

I had a hard time figuring out what perfume might be frivolous, so I decided to me it meant kind of easy and feel-good-ish, and cheery, and I went with ELDO Noel au Balcon. Honey, orange, spices, up-beat. I am interested to see how others interpreted this CP. But I also found myself wondering, are Slinkies really frivolous? Hmmm. To me, they have a kind of scientific quality that makes them seem a bit serious. It’s like you watch one doing its think and wonder how it works. We didn’t have stairs at my house, growing up, but would play with a Slinky at my grandma’s house just down the street, and it always mystified me.

I’ve been interested in that one for quite a while now. The notes just sound SO good. I agree with you on the slinky. I never had one, but the neighbor kids did and I found it fascinating. It seemed so wonderfully perfect as it went gracefully down the stairs. I just couldn’t figure it out..

Couldn’t decide on which frivolous perfume to wear today then said screw it and went with no 19 Poudre. No, it isn’t frivolous but wanted to give it a second chance. It’s still a powdery iris that bears no resemblance to the original no 19.

Good morning, and Happy FriYAY FriYAY FriYAY! What a long dadgum working week! Sheesh

I was quickly looking in my stash, trying to think “frivolity”, and decided to go with Lush Cardamom Coffee (the solid form). It’s fun, it’s office friendly, and it smells pretty awesome! Easy fun scents are frivolous? I think so…..

My busy family needs to unplug a bit this weekend, so we’re planning to drive up to Congaree National Park, and maybe Ninety-Six National Historic Site. The rat race is not my preferred lifestyle, that’s for sure! 🙂

After easily finding frivolous perfumes all week, which I interpreted as fun, carefree, decidedly not-serious perfumes, I couldn’t think of what to wear today. Then I saw Robin’s SOTD and decided to wear a similar perfume. It’s called Eau Jaune by La Cie de Provence, a cheapie little French brand that doesn’t seem to exist any longer. Eau Jaune is a candy sweet citrus blend with some violet leaf and musk. Weirdly though today I’m getting some undertone of the musk of L’air de Rien. So I’m thinking about this perfume more than I thought I would!

So happy for Friday and a 3 day weekend!

I am in Auckland and from my hotel bed I can see yachts sailing on the harbour and behind the low volcanic cone of Rangitoto island. A beautiful, sparkly ocean morning. Depending on your POV yesterday was either a day of frivolity or hard core research….either way perfume overload:
    Beaufort Tonerre
    Beaufort Coeur de Noir
    Orto Parisi Terroni
    Carner Barcelona Black Calamus
    Amouage Portrayal
    Amouage Myths
    Amouage Wit
    Amouage Epic
    Lubin Epidor
And then a meet up with Waterdragon …she’s in top form and I passed on all your greetings. Cats are all healthy…..and she gave me a sample of 1957 AND , a dream come true, a beautiful Tauer tin of samples. I never thought I would ever get to see a Tauer in real life , such generosity.
    More perfumes today.
At one point in the perfume shop the saleswoman passed me something (an Amouage) and said it was like an “old lady scent”. I looked at her…mid 60s, punk , grey hair, pink lips, dazzling blue eyeshadow, bauble earrings, yellow and orange trouser suit outfit and asked “Like us?” and she laughed.

I liked both Beauforts but a bit close to Bapteme du Feu to be tempted. Terroni was good but finally went a bit sour. Portrayal was a thick, smooth jasmine that reminded me of a bold mimosa and was the one that surprised me because I liked it despite not being a floral type. ….must be spring calling. 1957 was fluffy then flat. I am saving the Tauers until I get home and away from sampling.

In an effort to get back into the perfume game, at least a little, I stopped by the mall this afternoon to get a sample of Gucci Memoire… To my surprise, Sephora had a bottle of Rush sitting right next to it (haven’t seen that one in a store in ages), so I sprayed a little on for Frivolous points. (Put a little Hermes Néroli Doré on the other wrist for Purdy points.)

FearsMice, I tried Gucci Memoire as well at Sephora today, and it didn’t really work on me. It had a mint opening but a sour mint not a tart one.

I will try again. I also sprayed some Atelier Vanilla Incensee on me and think that created a fog of sorts.

Yasmina, AngelaB and Deva — I haven’t put Memoire on skin yet. When I first sprayed it on a blotter, I wasn’t too taken with it — got a whiff of the sourness that Angela notes. I brought the blotter home though, and sniffing it now, the sourness is gone and the mint is very subdued; there is a subtly sweet hay-like quality to the drydown. I think it might be nice on skin after it settles a bit.

Well, I think it’s better to cancel plans and not have to worry about losing your life. Storms of any kind in Florida are no joke. I still remember the “No Name Storm” back in 93. It was horrendous. We called old neighbors that we used to live next to over on St Pete Beach and asked them to evacuate to my mom and dad’s house. Initially, they scoffed at us, but then decided to play it safe and came about an hour later. What a horrible night that was!

I’ll keep your hubs in my thoughts, hoping the storm turns on itself and heads back out to sea!

Well I’m just rockin’ a Bois des Iles and Paris-Deauville samples right now! Would love to have a BdI FB. Will probably do a decant first, though. I could easily blow way too much $$ on the Les Exclusifs…

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’eau RED bottle

Today, I chose to interpret frivolous as indulgent. I have 4 sizes of this perfume, none of which I would consider a back up for the other but now I don’t have to worry about reformulation ?.

Here’s my post on Insta wherein I mentioned our Community Project!

In other news, I won a $50 gift card from Brighton Collectibles! I usually leverage GWPs but I decided that getting lucky today was the universe’s way of telling me to do something frivolous…and so I did!

Now off to read everyone else’s pick!

Congrats on the gift card. There’s a lot to be said about never needing to buy a BUB! ??

There’s something a little frivolous about red anyway…

Congrats on the gift card! I’ve been kinda obsessed with Brighton’s cuff bracelets ever since you mentioned them here some time ago.

You smell divine! I just smelled that one at Sephora and loved it! I thought it would be overpowering but it was truly lovely &light.

What a day! Today was my turn in the rotation to be on my bosses bad side.
I wore Black Opium today for the first time in a long time. I can’t really explain why I think it’s frivolous, but I do. I still really like it too.

Ugh. Wish you could fire your boss.

Happy you got to enjoy the Black Opium, though. 🙂

That’s especially tough when it occurs on a Friday before a long weekend.

Sending out some good thoughts for all those facing Dorian.

My frivilious choice tonight was My Green Summer by YR. I put on about 10 sprays. I think for tomorrow I will pack Bronze Goddess and maybe Prada Iris. I still have to get motivated to pack up for an early trip tomorrow morning; my hubby is caddying for his brother in a golf tournament all weekend. My feet already hurt!
