Friday scent of the day 7/19

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2019 268 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Daiquiri Day! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Jo Loves, Jack Perfumes, Jardins D’Écrivains, Jul et Mad or Juliette Has A Gun, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter J.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Richard E Grant's Jack Covent Garden, a light citrus / iris which is a good fit with the crazy hot weather we're expecting today.

Reminder: on 7/26 we're doing Gone In Sixty Seconds...wear the shortest-lived fragrance you own. Bonus points for reapplying all day long. Suggested by pyramus.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good pick! That’s a nice one was hoping I could find my sample. No luck.
Did “J” for just because and went with DSH” Love is Everything” as I just wanted to feel cool in this heat!
We saw Tedeschi Trucks Band this week after a major storm and the humidity was BRUTAL! We are all wilting in DC. Love is Everything is a gorgeous Mango Lassi.
      It’s working.

Derek Trucks, gosh what an amazing player.
I saw him at the Beacon with the Allman Bros. on their 45th anniversary tour. It was the last night they all played together. Greg was sick for the final 2 nights.

I’m wearing Mmmm by JHaG, my only sample that fits, which I am pleasantly surprised by. I really thought I was taking one for the team this morning by putting on something that lists “sugar” in the base notes, but now I think it might have been a typo for “amber”? Does anyone else get amber in this? Anyway I like it pretty well and it’s not too sweet.

Jo Malone Blackberry Bay and “thunk” since that sample is now finished.
I have never explored that brand, but a generous NSTer gifted me with this sample and a bar of soap and I really enjoyed the soap. Not to mentioned it lasted forever..

Thank you for all the kind words yesterday regarding our fur child. I have no words, only tears.

    Citrus and iris sounds nice!

My scent of the morning was my only JHAG, Gentlewoman. I said it before and I repeat: it’s a lovely citrus cologne.

In the afternoon, I happened to be near a big perfume store, so I tried several Jul et Mad scents. I skin-tested Fugit Amor and Nin-Shar.
Fugit Amor’s (love the name!) opening was very impressive – milky, creamy cardamom. Unfortunately, soon a ‘fabric softener’ note appeared. Then cardamom again. Then carnation – very similar to the carnation note in CB Sweet William.
As for Nin-Shar, it’s a gourmand patchouli-rose. Very pleasant, almost edible, but it definitely reminds me of another perfume, although I cannot remember which one.
I also tried Secrets du Paradis Rouge (sticky, syrupy orange blossom) and Bella Donna (jasmine) on blotters. Overall, while I do not lemming any of these four scents yet, I would love to get samples and test them properly. Thank you, Robin, for drawing my attention to this house.

I wore JHAG Not A Perfume at bedtime last night, to check whether it was a candidate for today, but nope. So I’m in Le Galion Iris – not a J (small or large) to its name, but I love it and, equally importantly, Mr. G inhaled deeply and approved heartily. Happy Daiquiri Day everyone!

SheriG I may have to sample that one – what do you like most about this Iris perfume? I am always curious and search for one with some sillage as they usually morph into skin scents on me far too quickly.
IdIA by Prada is the only one with staying power.

Hi AngelaB – the Le Galion Iris is a tiny bit on the rooty/carrot-y side, but certainly not overwhelmingly so, and I get decent sillage and staying power from it. I find it not so much a “clean” iris, exactly, but a “clear” iris – there is no overlay of fizziness or spice, and (on me) no musk. For a mental image, think sparklingly clean crystal stemware.

Jardins D’Écrivains Junky. The jig is up, y’all! – this has been languishing in my “try again” sample/decant pile for five years. I still like it quite a bit, but not enough to warrant keeping it around. I was briefly considering using it up today to keep life simple, but have instead added it to the pass-it-on pile.

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt with Lime Basil & Mandarin. It’s a good combo for the heat advisory we have for today.?
We had storms overnight and I was awake for most of it. Got up this morning to see that our internet cable to the house is laying on the ground in the backyard. I called our provider (three letters, starts with an A) and spent 45 minutes on the phone between hold times and transfers to different people all to be told the soonest they could get a technician here was next Tuesday. I told them that was unacceptable, I used my politely assertive voice and everything, all to no avail. When I got off the phone my son told me, “mom, when I hear you talk to someone like that, it makes me feel anxious.”? “Good!” I said “it’s supposed to!” Even though it didn’t work.?
    Happy Friday everyone!

If they had more competition, they would change their tune. Their phone menus are the absolute worst. I’d switch carriers in a heartbeat if I had another option.

And agree about competition. When all you could get here was Comcast, I went 4-5+ days without internet more than once. Verizon has been much better, but I assume that’s only because now people have a choice.

Hi all – SOTD will be Jacomo – Art Collection #02 – the funky one with the playdoh/art supplies smell. I think I will get CP points, for once, although I’d really like to swap this to someone who would enjoy it more. I actually like the playdoh thing and the fun idea behind it, I just don’t reach for it much.

I’ve been prepping for the heat wave by making (and consuming) copious quantities of iced tea. Tonight I will supplement that with some frozen yogurt, and maybe a cool bath later on ?☀️?

Ha! My elderly person is my mother, 92 today, who generally turns off her AC at night and turns on her gas fireplace in the morning to warm up, lol. Here’s every local news outlet breathlessly admonishing against heat stroke and my mom is freezing. She informed me that she’s keeping her air conditioning on today – it’s set at 78F.

And then in the winter, when they’ve set the heat to 74 and I’m sitting there in a t-shirt, my mother worries, “You will PERISH. It is SO COLD. You can’t wear a t-shirt!”

Sounds like my mom’s apartment. I think she had the heat set somewhere between 78 and 83 the last time I visited, and I was getting baked!

Happy Birthday to your mom, ringthing! ?

We lost power yesterday morning during severe storms at the beginning of this current heat wave. This was my greatest fear, too -I am claustrophobic and the thought of no AC started to press my panic button, so I know what you mean. Fortunately, it was only off for about an hour and the house stayed cool. Fingers crossed for you!

Not participating in the CP. Started the morning in Fleur de Peau which went from rooty iris to baby spit up to musk to nothing after an hour. Now I am in Hiram Green Voyage and the most prominent not is the lavender absolute which impart the “suede” accord.

Ha! You know I do!!! Funny thing is I went into the city with the eldest Marzipan on Tuesday ( our last hurrah cause she moved into her gorgeous new apartment yesterday and starts work on Monday) and I sampled about 10 or more Diptyque on paper in the store at Grand Central Terminal and I loved this one so much on paper that I asked for a sample!! Funny, right?

I totally get your description- I liked the rooty part but also got some weird funk (though it smelled vaguely poop-ish to me). I think you might be anosmic to the musk which I found relentless and lived through a shower and then some!
Also, that GCS Diptyque gives out samples?!?

Sotd is JHAG Vanilla Vibes. It reminds me a tiny bit of Soleil Blanc. It’s a low key summer salty vanilla with a faint suntan lotion note. Surprised to find that after multiple wearings, it’s grown on me.

I get called pretty often here and have served on juries twice. It was pretty interesting but not a major case like a murder or anything. It’s worse here because you can get called for both city and county cases (or is it district?) and service on one type won’t exempt you from serving on the other type. I don’t remember for sure but I think you can called as often as every six months.

I thought it was every three years until I got called just about every other year! That said, my mom gets called every year and for many years, i’ve responded on her behalf that she is exempt because of age. It’s not like she will get younger and all of a sudden not qualify for that exemption!

Super! You’re allowed a cheat day to mix things up, no? I heard that revs up your metabolism.

I’m not following a program but I’ve made deliberate choices on the type and quantity of food I’ve been eating. My weight usually fluctuates anywhere from 1-3 pounds within a range and the upper ceiling of that range had been consistently 2 pounds below the normal range. I’m a very slow loser but if I keep up with 1 pound a month for the rest of the year, I would meet my first goal!

I don’t have any perfume that begins with the letter J so I am in Avignon today. Finally finished that blog post that I have been working on for a week and a half. I had to order a new pair of work shoes last night. The back of one of my work shoes (a plastic part on the inside) broke and gave me a huge blister. I folded the back of both shoes to make them wearable until the new ones arrive. The Shoes for Crews and SR Max are the companies that my work site uses really do suck. Shoes for Crews discontinued the shoes that I actually liked and fit. But those shoe companies are expensive but I found a clearance pair and I hope they fit me right. It’s hard enough to find a regular pair of 8 1/2 wide pair of shoes let alone a pair of non slip shoes and shoe sizes are really incontinent. I don’t think anyone will notice my shoes for the next couple days because my pants will cover the backs.

As mentioned yesterday, I’m in Jo Loves Green Orange & Coriander today. I like it quite a bit. It has a mineral quality to it, and it’s a touch on the masculine side. Reminds me in different ways of Terre d’Hermes, Lime Basil and Mandarin, and Eau de Merveilles, though I haven’t smelled EdM for many years because it didn’t work for me. Anyway, will enjoy the rest of my decant, but I won’t need a bottle.

Oh, interesting. It does not smell masculine at all to me, and the only scent it reminded me of was Jean Couturier Coriandre. Even though they are quite different, they both have a strong coriander note, in my opinion.
But I can see why you compare it to Terre – Green Orange & Coriander definitely has a fresh citrus/woody side.

Today’s the first time I’ve worn perfume is what seems like AGES! Freshly showered with HOT RUNNING WATER and to celebrate I’m wearing two generous spritzes of BOE. These little things make me so happy?

For those interested, we are currently in Missoula and headed to the Grand Tetons. Secured my next assignment in North Dakota starting the end of August, so will be headed that way mid-August. Until then, will be wandering the US of A.

Special hat tip to all the Canadians who read this blog: I’m seriously in love with your country. Starting with your well maintained wild places, your superior road system, your kind and friendly people, and ending who knows where (maybe your handsome prime minister!). Also knocked out by how CLEAN the country is! I’m hoping to get up the eastern coastal area sometime next year.

Haven’t been able to keep up with comments due to very sporadic connectivity, but hope all are well, enjoying some summer goodness, and smelling fabulous! ✌?

Oh The Grand Tetons are BEAUTIFUL!! Enjoy Deva. You are also close to two other national parks – where else are you going?
There is even a beautiful ride to Wind River which takes you through a painted village similar to the Badlands but prettier as you also have the red rock of Colorado. We did a motorcycle trip last summer from Yellowstone down and through to Colorado Springs then on to Albuquerque. That is my favorite country out there!! Get some hatch chili’s on your route!!! Do you have your bear spray? Also it’s Bison Jamboree time soon…. beware.

    Happy Friday-

And here it comes, a blast of heat! We have had a lovely mild but humid July in PDX, so this weekend we have us all panting!

Am in JM Lime Basil Mandarin (from a sample). I can see where BeautyPie got their inspiration for teh Brazilian Lime, Fig & Black Tea scent.

Will be working in the garden tonight- need to switch some things up! My Borage plants have become thugs and is crowding eveything out- but they make the bees happy, so will relocate them to a corner of the garden where they will probably reseed. Planting Rosemary in a corner (it’s not happy in it’s pot and re-potting the mint and thai mint. Adding basil plants and getting fall stuff in!

I was so busy this past week that … I participated in the CP the whole week (but didn’t have time to report). I know, it’s slightly counterintuitive but since I had absolutely no time to think about what to wear, I just went with 4 perfumes from Jul et Mad that I had (Amour de Palazzo, Stilettos on Lex, Terrasse St. Germain and Aqua Sextius), and today I switched to JHAG Miss Charming, which I’m definitely not after a stress-induced insomnia. But I smell good, and it’s Friday.

An accidental perfume hit with the unlikely combination of JM pomegranate noir layered over JM French Lime Blossom. For some reason it really works. My sotd is JHAG Vanilla Vibes, layered over Orange Sanguine. Which I used as a body spray, lol. Question: I was thinking of wearing a 3/4 length skirt for my interview next week. Is it more appropriate to wear hosiery or is that just way to out of style now? My old self, wouldn’t dream of having bare legs, but I want to be somewhat fashionable.

I wore tights for interviews last summer because although I’m in my 30’s, I was still raised on slips and hose! But I am tall, and my skirts are to the knee. I think bare legs are probably fine if your skirt is longer. Ha! – Does that sound arbitrary? Wear whatever you feel best in is probably the best advice! Good luck!

What arena of work is this? Err on the side of caution, and wear hose, unless you are absolutely sure the person interviewing you will be female and will not be wearing hose. Even then, if you want to give the impression that you are interested in advancement from this position with the company, I would wear hose.

I work in an office in a fairly conservative work field and have to admit that I haven’t seen people wear hose regularly in years. I do on occasion but not often. When in doubt, though, I agree to wear them or wear slacks until you get a feel for the environment.

No Js, so not participating today. No heat here in Vancouver, either. Trying to will summer into being with Florabellio…but, no dice beyond sun today.

I got a dose of summer the first few days I was in Germany a few weeks back — the heat wave ended soon after, though, and then we were all in 20 degree weather (68F for Americans) and now Vancouver’s in the same place since my return. I packed for the heat wave in Germany and had to hit up the sales to get little Ockeghem a jacket.

I suspect that one is chock full of iso e super (or whatever order those words are supposed to go in.) My H wore it the other night and I eventually asked him to wash it off. I’d also smelled it at the counter and loved it. But I went through all my typical iso e super phases when he was wearing it (ending in extreme annoyance verging on anger) so am chalking it up to that.

I also can barely smell Eau de Mervielles on my skin. I remember testing it one time in Sephora and must have sprayed myself 20 times. The Eau de Mervielles bottle I had I decanted and added some lavender oil to it which made it smell divine.

I have none of the small ‘j’s’ for today’s cp and was going to wear JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt but opted instead for a ‘j’ scent I love and never see talked about: Jean-Charles Brosseau Ombré Bleue. I am not fond of white florals and rarely wear any floral fragrances in hot weather but this is a mid-summer favorite of mine. I smell a soft orange blossom, a spicy carnation, jasmine, a bit of honey, and later on, sea and sand notes. Coupled with its blue lagoon juice and beautiful octagonal bottle frosted and etched with flowers, it’s just lovely all the way. I’ve read it was intended to recall the scent of early French tanning oils, bodies stretched out lazily in the shade of umbrella pines on a Mediterranean beach. I can only dream that’s where I am on a hot, hot July day!

It’s even too hot for me today to stretch out at the pool and we’’ll probably skip the outdoor concert in the park tonight. Instead I’ll stretch out lazily with a book this afternoon and a cat or two or three inside with the AC. And, tomorrow, another hot, hot day, it’ll be an indoor concert -Michael Buble, so looking forward to this!

    Happy Friday! Stay cool!

never tried Ombre Bleue but wore Ombre Rose quite frequently in the early 1980s. Recently bought a mini of the extrait for three dollars and did not report to Donatella because it qualified me for free shipping so I consider it free. I guess I could have worn that today.

I love Ombré Rose and have both the extrait and edp but would never wear it in summer – the powder would suffocate me. Ombré Bleue is soft but not powdery.

Briefly tried Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance from a sample. It’s not something I can wear while I’m in the same house with Mom. I’m not feeling that ambitious about going out in this weather, so I washed it off quickly. I got a big burst of heavy spice and didn’t get a rose scent in those first few minutes, but I’ll try it again sometime.

I wasn’t feeling any of my JHAG samples, nor Jacomo Silences. this morning it was Ineke Field Notes from Paris, which I liked the first time but today didn’t hold up to the excessive heat, i think I sweated it away in a hour or so. Right now it’s L’Eau Mixte by Nicolaï for some freshness – I’m getting lots of mint and grapefruit.

I wore JHAG Mad Madame yesterday (my Friday) and thought I’d done my dash for the CP, but reading comments this morning reminded me I have a sample of Jul et Mad’s Nea. It’s a bit sweet for me, but still very nice, so that’s what I’ll wear after my post-house work morning shower.

Song of the day: “Hot Hot Hot” by Buster Pointdexter.

SOTD = JHAG Lady Vengeance, from the sample stash. I’m scent twins with Bear and Calypso. Probably a few other people, too. This smells great today!

Hi twin, but I think we are triplets or quadruplets by now!

Not joining the CP today, but proud of myself nonetheless for thunking an old decant of Aomassi. So old, in fact, that the juice had turned to syrup, which I teased out of the spray vial through sheer patience.

    Happy Friday, everybody!

Had kind of an on and off day. I used my old stand-by Crabtree & Evelyn Goatmilk lotion for after my shower; it made me sneeze, which hasn’t happened before. It smelled a bit musky all day on me, almost had to wash it off. Then after work, I had time to stop in at Sephora. They totally changed the store; got rid of numerous fragrance lines (Dior, Poison line; no Guerlain left either). I sampled a JHAG (not even sure which one). Turned kinda of sour, ugh!

Circled back to Lush; sprayed on some Coffee Cardamom over the JHAG; also re-stocked my Daddy-O shampoo. Then went to try some Chanel No 5 L’eau on my other wrist, ahh; I see why the rave reviews. The world was balanced again!

Glad for you that after the letdown the day ended well in L’Eau 🙂 I really like it too and have a bottle bought two years or so ago, it’s at its best in summer imo.
