Wednesday scent of the day 6/19

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2019 275 Comments

It's Hump Day and Juneteenth. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Mandarine Basilic, from the Aqua Allegoria collection.

Reminder: on 6/21, mark the solstice by wearing your favorite fragrance of summer (or winter) 2019.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Eau des Merveilles, which counts as a favorite fragrance of summer or winter. ..or spring or fall, for that matter.?
I’m headed out to meet a friend for coffee. Her signature fragrance is The Body Shop White Musk, so she always smells nice.

That was my signature scent for the longest time. I still a bottle of the oil formulation from the early 2000s.

I was talking about white musk – I wonder what the current oil smells like. Mine is so great. I had actually in a moment of madness given away my bottle to a friend 8 years ago now but then came to my senses a week later and asked for it back. She was amused.

What a day yesterday! Went to get my injectable B12 refilled (pernicious anemia) at CVS, because I’ve been going to them for YEARS and they’re nationwide. I asked the pharmacist for syringes and then:

Him: Oh, it’s illegal to sell syringes! They’re very strict about that here!
Me: So how am I to utilize this injectable medication?
    Him: I don’t know.
Me: Maybe I should just go find a random syringe off the street?
Him: oh, that wouldn’t be good. I wouldn’t advise that
Me: Why am I being charged for medication I can’t use then?
Him: We have a policy that says I can’t sell syringes.
Me: Then why have I gotten syringes at every other CVS across the country?
    Him: We have a policy…
Me: Turning and walking out the door, then driving all the way across town to another CVS where I bought syringes, zero questions asked.

This was after I drove all the way downtown to the post office to get my mail. Only the second time I’ve been there, and the clerk says: “You can’t get general delivery for more than 30 days. You’re CUT OFF!” as she makes a slashing motion across her throat. No joke. Back in the van, vroom-vroomed two blocks, sitting at a red light and a hot mess of a woman decides to step out of a closed store entryway, walks two steps to the (busy) street-corner, drops her pants, squats, and commences to let loose. I kid you not. Travel certainly is mind expanding…Overjoyed I’m just passing through this area!

At the second CVS, I did a bit of shopping, and was checked out by the spitting image of Jean-Ralphio from Parks and Rec, which totally turned me around, and I couldn’t help but laugh, because HAIR!! ?

I’m in Amouage Fate for my VERY LAST shift. Saints be PRAISED!!

Deva, I commiserate on the CVS exchange – I often find myself saying to people behind the counter, “You do realize what you’re saying makes no sense at all, right?” This does not endear me to pharmacy staff.

As for the other stuff – wow, your errand running is much more interesting than mine…..

      Last shift – hallelujah.

OMG… yay for last shift! I’ve had a couple of weird pharmacy experiences here in Montréal as well, including a pharmacist who did not want to sell me a bottle of aspirin as she was convinced it would kill me (!). She seemed afraid I would bleed out right there in her pharmacy. Really. A product that is freely available over the counter all around the world and was created from a natural material, tree bark. As opposed to Advil and Tylenol, which they push instead here, and will destroy your liver. No thank you.

That pharmacist is a NIMROD. Syringes are OTC. Over the years I went from feeling like I had to police it, to feeling like a clean syringe sold to a suspicious character is better than hepatitis or HIV, so I quit being so tough on people….LOL

As for a patient standing there with a RX for B12 injections, I would have been EMBARRASSED to look that clueless! 🙂

Unless your particular state has an addendum to the pharmacy law, syringes are OTC. There are a couple types of insulin that are OTC (Humulin R, Novolin R, so forth) so the syringes must be OTC too…..

I asked my pharmacist for a syringe years ago to refill old snow globes. He started laughing so hard he handed me one and said “you must be legit because that’s the strangest request I’ve ever gotten”.

Psst, so syringes are never the problem. The problem is needles with points that can penetrate skin. For perfume decanting, you don’t need a pointy needle, and you can get blunt needles easily on Amazon. I use syringes + blunt needles and would be happy to figure out what gauge works for me for decanting, if you’d like.

What a day! Hope today is better. I take care of my mother (92) and she gets all of her prescriptions from our (1) CVS store, which delivers them to her home as she is a shut in. One of her meds is a liquid that’s kept refrigerated and it is often a hassle to get refills as it’s not kept on the shelf in the pharmacy and a couple pharmacists assume the store is out of the medication or the delivery person doesn’t get it out of the cooler. Very frustrating. Don’t get me started on the music they play while you’re on hold!

Not quite the same, as my health wasn’t on the line, but I’ve had similar types of exchanges at our local hockey games. The “security” staff are all part-timers and generally clueless, but somewhere along the lines the management has decided it’s necessary to increase security “for our protection,” including metal detectors and going through our bags at entrance (not that the huge lines out the door wouldn’t make an awesome target). Anyway. . .

I was going into a game with my iPad in my purse, and a woman said, “we don’t let those in here!” And I looked at her like she was dumb and said, “Yes you do.” And I walked right on in with my iPad (alongside literally EVERYONE with their cell phones). Stupid.

I’m wearing Scorza di Sicilia by Berdoues for the CP. I’m experimenting with scents that I don’t often wear to find something other than my go-to summer fragrances for the CP. For this kind of project I always seem to default to either Balle de Match or Batucada.

Pulled out my newish backup bottle of HdP 1969 this morning and was very underwhelmed. Has this been reformulated? It just smells like a generic sweet blah thing. I had to layer some Tauer Patchouli Flash to give it some character.

I prefer GGGB to Beyond Love.

    Good morning Y’all….

Wearing my June Scentbird pick: Acqua di Parma Arancia di Capri. I can’t smell it 10 minutes after application??? I sprayed at least 10 sprays this morning and it’s GONE. Anyhoo, it’s a nice enough smell that first couple of minutes, but very disappointing overall. I’ll use up the rest of it quick quick quick and keep on moving to the next discovery! 🙂

I received my J Scent sample pack from Luckyscent yesterday and I’m wearing Sumo Wrestler today. My Japanese-Canadian husband was shocked that I want to smell like a Sumo Wrestler but I pointed out that just because he is Japanese doesn’t mean he knows what a Sumo wrestler smells like, and apparently they smell very nice. Big on violets, if you will excuse the use of “big”.

Definitely visit Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Visit Rosenborg, where the queen lives. See Christiania which is a special place for Copenhagen and many Danish people in general. If you are interested in art, definitely visit Glyptoteket, Lousiana art, Rungsted Lund (where Karen Blixen use to live). See Tivoli which is a great beautiful amusement park. Also there are may great little coffee spots and hangarounds. If you need more info or any help I will gladly see if I can help 🙂

A decant of Cuir de Russie came in the mail last week. Wore it to bed once (delish!), today’s the first daytime spin for a while. Still have a little spray sample for throwing in my purse.

Caught the last 15 minutes of “Scent of a Woman” the other night, as a family member was watching it. When Al sniffs the gal at the end and proclaims her scent “Fleurs de Rocaille”: evidence that I’ve truly gone down the rabbit hole, because I actually knew it. Was this a common scent at one time? I only know it because I grabbed a vintage bottle at an antique store for cheap, and since then have recognized it when mentioned. Have no recollection of any advertisements during my lifetime, or any female family members wearing it.

I’m volunteering at the botanical garden after work today as a Fragrant Rose Evaluator! Which means I’ll be smelling roses and rating them on a numerical scale based on the strength of their scent. (I was BORN for this job!) The garden staff is going to compile the information into a guide for local rose gardeners. When I saw the call for volunteers, I immediately thought “Wait til I tell NST about this!”

I’m wearing Grandiflora Magnolia Michel for the 1st time since just sampling it. It’s a lot of grapefruit, which I like, but doesn’t smell particularly floral to me. There’s maybe a punch of salt in there, too. I’m finding it pleasant for what it is, though, and invigorating for another rainy, humid day. I’ll be really bummed if we have a mostly rainy summer like last year.
We have this concrete wall in the back that has a bush planted in it and the water doesn’t drain well so there’s standing water frequently. I ran into a mosquito fest when I went out back a few weeks ago and I’ve contacted my landlord twice about it already. I’ve been spraying the water with a concoction of dish soap, vegetable oil, cedar and clary sage EOs to help prevent mosquito nesting and it works but needs to be done again every time it rains. I think the bush may die in the process as it already has fewer leaves than previous years ?

Sounds like an interesting job! What did you do for standing water not easily removed?

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt.

My morning started out very early (5:30am) with my poor dog, who is fourteen years old, pacing around the bedroom and panting. I thought he just had to go outside, but all of a sudden he started yelping. I flipped the lights on and his back was arched and his front paw was was curled up. I gave him a gabapentin pain pill, and his pain must have subsided because his back straightened out a little after about a half hour. I brought him to our vet when they opened. The vet thinks it may be a pinched nerve, and ran some bloodwork and gave him a steroid shot. My poor boy 🙁

He has been sleeping most of the day. He got up a little while ago to get some water. His back is slightly arched. This morning he was almost an upside down “u”.

Wearing Baghari today because I put some on last night and it smelled so good. I like this more in the summer than the winter, that gorgeous drydown lasts all day. I have an unexpected day off and it’s raining (again) so I’m spending some time reading and snuggling with the cat. Just started Edna Ferber’s Showboat which I read decades ago, I can almost smell the river and feel the warm humid air. Her books are like time capsules, anyone else a fan?

I’m up uncharacteristically early because I had my three-month follow up with my hip surgeon at 8 a.m. this morning. He had new X-rays done and pronounced everything is doing well! Big news is I get to leave the walker behind and graduate to a cane. Yay! I’m to see him again in six weeks. Now I’m back home in bed and ready for a nap. I just sprayed on Honour Woman for the CP: a BWF that is nice in summer heat due to the refreshing rhubarb note and spices. One of my favorites.

ZOTM is Chameleon, which is a little to sheer for me at the moment, but very pretty.

Since my last check-in, I have also tried Beaver (musk bomb) and Camel (lovely cinnamon and spices then *poof*, gone after less than 2 hours). At least everything I’ve tried recently was nice and non-poopy. ?

Loved reading everybody’s comments. So upbeat. “Fragrant Rose Evaluator” – cool yet eccentric.
I’m also a tuberose girl today (not my usual thing) as I scored a vintage dabber mini of Gianfranco Ferre for her. It must be the original as at the bottom of the little box it says Diana da Silva- the company when launched. It has orange blossom and tuberose on top and then tada, swampwatery oakmoss in the base. And the thing is, it makes it elegant and natural smelling. The antithesis of modern laundry musks.
PS Deva, WHERE in the world are you now? Washington state still? The woman squatting -I assume in broad daylight?!!

I haven’t figured out a SOTD yet. It’s been a busy morning. Amazon Prime Day is around the corner and I was thinking about getting a Fire Stick for the TV for my dad’s birthday. One of my oldest friend’s son just got the apartment he wanted here in NYC. Very excited for him as he starts a new adventure just out of college. She lives in Northern CA (Marin) and both her kids are now in the East Coast. Hoping he’ll let my husband and me take him to dinner soon.

    Wednesday!

I am in Philoskyos, another wonderful scent for summer.

Today is a little cooler- high of 70F/21C- but it feels perfect.

Ran into some friends that I had not seen in a year in downtown PDX. All remarked on my improved bearing and seeming smaller size. Have not lost one pound, but did go down in size due to the Pilates and weight training. Felt so pleased at their complements!

The past week at work has been a tough one; I’ve got too many projects for one person to handle, and the constant context switching is taking a huge toll on my processing abilities and resilience. No one else has any free time to help out, though.

Thanks, lillyjo. I would, but I already know that no one else is available! I have a good idea of what my group members are working on, and everyone is stretched a little thin right now (a lot of critical decisions being made soon).

I do feel a little better now than I did an hour ago–a very nice, senior colleague who’s on a different team that I interact with said some very nice things about me, both to me and to a senior colleague in my own group 🙂 It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside! And not going to lie, I hope this praise makes its way to my manager!

Another busy day at work. My department met with the HR manager today so she could listen to what we had to say about our boss leaving and she answered some of our questions and made notes of others. It was a good meeting.

I copied Robin from yesterday and wore Guerlain Cologne du 68. It was the last of my decant, and I miss it already. I need to figure out whether to buy a bottle or another decant.

Talked to one of my best friends on the phone last night for almost an hour and a half. I realized as we talked how much I miss her. We haven’t lived in the same city for 8 or 9 years. She and her husband are trying to decide whether or not to have a 3rd child and she just left her college counselor job to stay at home with her two kids (ages 4 and 1) for at least the next year. Our lives are so different! I’m happily childless. At least I will get to see her in August when I go to Chicago to attend another close friend’s wedding.

St Clair Casablanca today. Again. Two days in a row and I keep wanting to reach for it. I love wafting around in this lush beauty.

Probably a touch of sillage overkill while I was at the library, but less rude than the man chewing gum with his mouth open. Ugh. Also, there was gelato, reading in a lovely community garden, and a sunshiny walk home, and then starting a book making project that has suddenly bitten me. More days like this, please!

I’ve been getting errands done as I need to, but otherwise having a “getting nowhere fast” week or two. I had fun trying the decants from Pixel’s “doorstop” bottles of 4711. Like she said, it’s nice that there are quite pleasant colognes that are very inexpensive. I especially liked the one with grapefruit.

I’ve also had a lot of fun with the bag of samples Janice sent. There were quite a number I’ve been curious about. I’ve tried a couple upstairs while the folks were downstairs, and vice versa.

I tried a bit of Coco Mademoiselle, but my sense of smell wasn’t that great at the time. I decided that was one to try again when I was sure my sense of smell was better.

Another day, late at night, I tried one that was named whatever the Italian is for Madagascar Vanilla, which also smelled like liquor to me. I was like, “Whoa, strong.” Of course, that was the one where I didn’t put the cap back on properly, so the whole dining room smelled like vanilla and liquor for a while. The scent is less now that the papers it spilled on have dried.

Mom has been coughing a little when she comes downstairs the last few days, but I think she would have said something if she’d recognized a perfume spill. Between us, we have a couple of bottles of vanilla extract in a kitchen cabinet, and I keep my “baking spices” in the dining room. Also, the dining room is where we keep our few bottles of liquor. I might have pretended that it was a vanilla Kahlua spill if there had been a coffee scent in there. 😉 Anyway, I got a really thorough test of what it smelled like on paper and on my skin.

I tried another vanilla — Provanilla, I think it was called. That was nice as far as I could tell, but my sense of smell wasn’t great then, either. I didn’t spill that sample, so I’ll try that again.

There are a bunch more that I’m very curious about. I may try some outside the house if it stops raining someday. Actually, according to the Philadelphia weatherpeople, it’s not supposed to rain Friday, which would be a pleasant change. I feel like if I don’t keep moving, I’ll be like those sloths that have algae on their fur.

Today I sprayed on some of the C.O. Bigelow lemon perfume. It’s pretty inoffensive as far as I can tell. I don’t think it travels too far from my skin or lasts very long, which is just as well for me.

I’ll try to stay more connected. I’ve kind of been on and off with the computer the past few days, and when I’m on, I’m usually reading the electronic versions of the New York Times and Washington Post.

Glad to see you back. I’ve tried that Bigolow Lemon, in lotion form and enjoyed it. You are right about keeping moving, even if it’s raining, at least try and have the curtains open, and Windows if you can.

The cologne was inspired by the fragrance of the lotion, apparently. I find it refreshing and it seems relatively low-key to me.

We keep the curtains open, but it’s been too hot and rainy to keep the windows open. I meant that with the high humidity, I’m kind of afraid that if I settle in one place for too long, I’ll get moldy or start getting mildew. lol

Ironically enough, with the air conditioning on, it’s been relatively dry inside, and I have been using lotion on my hands and legs.

I’m glad to be back. 🙂 My mood has been kind of here and there with this very rainy weather, but I think other people get that feeling, too.

Happy Birthday to June birthday people, and Happy Anniversary to folks celebrating anniversaries in June. I hope that those folks not feeling well feel better soon. But take it easy if you can! 🙂
