Rare and unadulterated

Posted by Robin on 18 June 2019 8 Comments

‘People often speak about New Zealand’s distinctive light,’ says Bowler. ‘And the same can be said for its unique odour profile – it’s woody, balsamic, mossy and green with a saltiness in the air. Our native flora doesn’t present the big tropical floralcy that one might expect from a South Pacific island, but what we do have is rare and unadulterated. And this earthy imprint has a massive influence on the emerging style of New Zealand perfumery.’

— Perfumer George Bowler, talking about New Zealand's indie perfume scene. Read more at Fresh fields: New Zealand’s noses are the new kids on the niche perfume block at Wallpaper.

I am always interested to read about how perfume creates a sense of identity and place, ( the bush, the beach, the mountains etc.). Interesting that there is no mention of scent in Maori history/ culture. It is a shame the work done by Ngai Tahu using taramea isn’t included but I can understand why as the article focuses more on the European idea of perfumery. Thanks Robin! I thought you might like to see the cover of my next novel. I will send you a copy when it comes out in September.

Yes, this article is not about that at all.

But I adore the cover, how perfect!! It will have US distribution, right?

I tried to pre-order it, but Amazon.au apparently does not ship to Canada or the US. 🙁 I have been able to order some of your other books from Amazon US and UK, although only used copies. Do you know if any of the other book stores listed as distributors ship to north america?

Thanks. I am not sure about overseas distribution but will let you know once it is published. It will definitely be available as an ebook/ibook and through several sites (for hard copy) . But I’ll keep you posted.

How cool! I got to know George when he was working at World in Wellington, early in my perfumista days. He introduced me to some very nice perfumes.

He was a nice guy. I would visit whenever I was in Wellington. He introduced me to Lubin perfumes and I also bought Billet Doux from him.
That Nom’D collaboration sounds interesting…I wonder if it will be a NZ-Russian inspired perfume? Black bottle, red and white graphics?
