Monday scent of the day 4/29

Posted by Robin on 29 April 2019 279 Comments

Monday (argh), International Dance Day, Duke Ellington's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

You would not know that it's almost May from the temperature outside this morning. I'm staying warm in Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret.

Reminder: on 5/3, wear lily of the valley for May Day (which is really on Wednesday).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My sense of smell is getting better everyday, for which I’m ever so grateful. Celebrating spring in Sous les magnolias by Pierre Bourdon. I might actually be able to do a week of Muguet. I’ll see what I feel like.

Sorry to hear your weather is still so cold, overhere it’s not as hot as it was last week, but very much like spring. We’ve had some nice rain and everything looks much better as a result.

SL Serge Noire. I used to disdain it but then they reformulated it into something I really like (and how rare is that?), adding or amping up a leather note to downplay the incense: it’s not in my top 10 of Lutenses but it’s in my top 20, and that’s good enough.

How rare? This may be the first time I’ve heard someone say that they prefer a reformulated fragrance. I thought there might be a law against it.

I wore that yesterday! I can only wear it when I’m not planning on going anywhere. It takes forever, but at some point all of the cumin-y stuff morphs into a cloud of the most enchanting incense. I’m still not sure if it’s worth the wait. 🙂

I think that I have heard only a couple of people mentioning that they prefer a reformulation to the initial version of a scent. So it’s really unusual in my book!

As much as I hate to admit it, there are a few reforms that I like better, because they are more wearable.

Wearing L d’Lolita Lempicka today, just because. It’s pouring rain again but since we had a a little snow Saturday night, mim not complaining. It would be nice to put the sweaters in storage though, since it’s almost May.

I don’t know why I don’t have more LOTV scents, but I have one for Friday. I’m wearing Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours from a mini that I got last month. I love minis and the companies sell their scents in that size.

I’m in Drole de Rose, which I did not like on first sniff but am sort of turning around on after putting some in my bath last night. Somehow that brought out the violet more, and I like it more when I think of it as a violet scent than when I think of it as a rose scent, which makes no sense but is nonetheless true. It’s rare for me to want to smell this kind of dainty-soft-pretty, but this will work for when I do.

I’m wearing MDCI Promesse de l’Aube this morning from a dwindling sample, and wishing I had more. It seems lately I can’t get enough jasmine scents. Not sure what I have with LotV but I’ll do a search soon. After a lazy weekend I’ve got to get back to grading final papers to try to finish out the semester, and I’ll also go visit Mom in her new assisted living apartment. She’s not adapting well, which isn’t surprising after so many recent transitions, but we took her a cat this weekend (one of mine) and I’m hoping that will provide her with some company and comfort. It’s a pretty adaptable cat so I hope she’ll enjoy having Mom’s undivided attention, too.

It’s also heavy on citrus, and has ylang-ylang. A good combination, not skanky at all, as some jasmines are (which I also enjoy).

Ha ha ha, right! She came to live with me a year ago after her human couldn’t keep her. She hid under the couch at first but her former human promised me “That won’t last long. She’s too nosy to hide for very long!” and it turned out to be true. She’s already emerged at Mom’s place, too! She is half-Manx and half-Siamese and a very unusual cat.

SOTD is Safari. I want to finish off a bottle for a ‘thunk’ for the week. Next bottle to finish is vintage Shalimar and vintage Chanel No. 19. They both are starting to turn and what is life if not for enjoyment of beautiful things?
Had an eventful weekend, was out lunching with a friend and an unattended Chihuahua wandered up to us (not wearing a collar). After unsuccessfully knocking on several doors, I delivered him to Peninsula Humane Society. Very sweet pup, he cuddled on my lap and promptly started snoring. He was chipped, PHS called the owner and hopefully, they’ll claim him. I’ve got some rescue agencies lined up in case they can help. Good deed for the day accomplished!

    Hello, hello, darlings!
I’m back from Milan, from Esxence. It’s been a blast thanks to some great people.
I liked quite some fragrances but didn’t fall in love with any immediately. Guess I need to spend more time with all the new things rather than judge them by the lense of preliminary sniff. Hope to find a pearl in this sea full of oysters.
I need some time to put everything together (and to put myself back together) but before anything else I will be posting my Esxence reports.

Today I’m wearing Osmanthus Interdite. So glad this week ends tomorrow (public holidays for the rest of the week)

I’m already tired of avoiding Game of Thrones spoilers this morning. I guess this will be the last episode that I wait to watch until Monday night. I’m hoping I can start watching earlier than 9 p.m. using HBO Go (I’m on the West coast) because I like to get plenty of sleep on Sunday nights, and all work nights really.

An email spammer sent out an Avengers spoiler to my entire organization over the weekend. It didn’t spoil anything for me personally – the Avengers movies aren’t really my cup of tea – but it just seemed so petty and mean-spirited to rain on so many people’s parades at once.

Happy Monday, friends! Ok, let’s try an Ede-style list:

    (1) Am wearing Muguet Porcelaine in the first time in at least 1.5 years. (Scent database tells me I wore it 0 times in 2018!!!) It is so much more beautiful than I remember! I put on three sprays two hours ago and it has quieted to a whisper already.

    (2) Concert on Saturday went fabulously! This past year, I’ve stepped into an unofficial leadership role, and therefore had a lot of investment in the show. It felt great to see all that hard work pay off. I wore A Quiet Morning to the show, thanks to an exceedingly kind NSTer, because I was stressed out beforehand and needed to calm down.

    (3) Had a rather eventful Sunday that I think I’d prefer to tell you about on Wednesday, after I predict other events taking place. Suffice to say I’m feeling rather glowy today. #vaguecommenting For now, I will say that I found myself near a Dior and discovered the exclusive line has bloated dramatically since the last time I paid attention to it. I tried and enjoyed Bois d’Argent (gorgeous iris that softens with time!), but the SA wouldn’t give me a sample, so that’s the end of that.

Spring is in the air here, but it’s seasonal temperatures, just right for this time of year and cool enough that I decided to wear Kelly Caleche EDP. I had forgotten how nice the citrus opening is, it seems to be one of JCE strengths, really outstanding imo.

SotD = Chanel No. 22 edp

My little sample is many years old but still smells hugely beautiful. It’s a symphony of flowers. Lily of the valley is listed as a top note on fragrantica. This morning No 22 reminds me of Crabtree & Evelyn’s Spring Rain, also a floral with lotv.

And it’s Spring raining hard here, surprisingly as it was not in the forecast. Google weather only gives us a 10-20% chance of showers, so I guess today is a very lucky day rain-wise.

Had an unplugged weekend, our home internet flickered on and off so I turned away from the screens. It was nice to be less distracted and pay more attention to people irl.

Want to share an article I came across about Annette Green, a very interesting perfume industry person who just turned 95 years young.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Because No.19, because Monday and and and it just so happens to have LOTV, according to Fragrantica.

I have to report that I was an inadvertent shoplifter yesterday. I had an unusually full Target shopping cart and had to use the bottom rack for an almost transparent filing box. As I was loading my car, I had that just stepped off the curb feeling — I did not pay for the box ??? but it was too late for me to go back into the store. I will rectify it this week but oh my!

If anyone is interested to pooling an Aftelier samples order, please email me. Take a look at one of the last entries in this past weekend’s Lazy Weekend Poll. Thanks.

lol, I’ve done that at Target too! I was in a rush and forgot I had laundry detergent down there. Felt so bad and a little silly, but was happy with myself that I went back a week later to take care of it.

        Yes to Chanel!

I guess Target doesn’t have a bottom of the cart camera similar to Wegmans. Also, I have seen a Wegmans cashier’s checklist that included checking the cart as it passes by.

That happened to me once at a grocery store while I had my three little ones with me. After we got to the car, the oldest (about 5 or 6) noticed an item on the bottom of the cart that I had not paid for. Then I HAD to drag everyone back in with me and pay for it right then rather than wait as he was concerned and I felt I needed to be a good example. The youngest was a crying hungry baby and I was near tears when I finally got home with them.

Oof, I’ve definitely done that. I once bought a giant bottle of vodka at Costco for a friend and didn’t realize they failed to charge me for it until I was checking the receipt to see how much he owed me. Another time, I got two of those fantabulous cakes at Whole Foods for my birthday party. I was in line with a friend and we were chatting away, and I didn’t notice that I had paid 50 % of what I had expected to pay until many hours later. I wonder how many other times this has happened that I have just never noticed.

It’s always a great feeling when a customer comes back to make things right with the purchase ?
On the flipside though… there are times when customers are not charged for an item, then they come back and want to return it for a refund!

Sharing Cazaubon’s cold and sunny morning. I am in bed after a tortuous migraine that woke me up at about 3:30 am. I am basically taking Maxalt every 12 hours, so clearly I am in some vicious rebound cycle. I’m about 73% recovered at the moment… drinking lots of water and coaxing sympathy from the cats. Just applied an angel’s share of Sublime Balkiss, but am a little worried that may have been too much for my sore noggin. Weekend perfumes were Good Girl Gone Bad on Sat, and Brin de Reglisse on Sunday. My mother told me a story about her and her husband eating out the other night—a woman at a nearby table was wearing so much perfume that my mom asked to be moved. Given my universe of mothers and daughters, I wondered if it was a dig a me on some level . . . Oh well. I certainly hope my level of perfume application never puts anyone off their meal!

My mom just left after a six day visit. My husband thought it went really well, “you didn’t talk about all the usual things you disagree on”, but I’m pooped. Told him I didn’t think it went well, but it must be a mothers and daughters thing. I often wish I had an effortless relationship with my mom, but find myself in your universe all too often. Wondering whether it’s just my perception that my mom thinks we’re in competition with each other.

Of course, when that time came, I didn’t want to wear perfume anymore. Eventually though, I had to go back to wearing it, because I HAD TO. Ya, know… I had to.

I will wear Satin Doll (Ys-Uzac) once I can get into my room, a smokey tuberose, luscious perfume. Until then I have yesterday’s Marrakech intense. I went through a jazz phase when I was younger ( doesn’t everyone?) which made the Blue Note something of a holy grail on my only trip to New York. I think my favourite music novel is the Bass Saxophone by Czech author Josef Skvorecky. Two novellas: one set during soviet occupation, the other during nazi occupation. It is a long time since I read it but there was a reference to Ellington, something to do with the misguided belief that he had dropped his title ‘Duke’ ( as if he had been born an aristocrat) and become a common man. My favourite jazz movie was Round Midnight which was a French movie starring Dexter Gordon. There is a scene that sticks with me where he blows out a birthday candle and the way he controls his breath for such a small act is just incredible. I used to rewind the video just to watch the scene over again. Oh well, waiting for sunrise then up the hill. Then driving my mother to my brother’s three hours away. Should be a good day.

It’s really not fancy at all. The bottle is very unisex to my eye as is the scent. I love it though. Ginger, almond, woody dry vanilla. Not totally unsweet but not cupcake, which I usually don’t like. What is sort of cool is that juice has a white cast, as if some cleaned off a small white paintbrush. The opening is effervescent but not aldehydic…sort of like really good gingerale soda. ?
