Tuesday scent of the day 4/2

Posted by Robin on 2 April 2019 279 Comments

It’s Damage Tuesday (Donatella will be coming by shortly), and it’s International Children’s Book Day and World Autism Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying to summon spring weather with Thierry Mugler Supra Floral.

Reminder: on 4/5, wear a fragrance by Gallivant, Grès, Ginestet, Grossmith or Grandiflora, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter G.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Versace Le Grand Divertissement teapot ("Playful floral decorations make this piece an eye catcher on every table or countertop.") is $795 at Rosenthal USA.

Still too cold, but the sun’s out! Did you all hear about the zombie spoof movie coming out in June, featuring Tilda Swinton and a winning cast (and that looks like an Iggy Pop cameo)~
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs5ZOcU6Bnw
Not my usual genre, but couldn’t we all use a laugh?
Just applied L’Occitane’s Zesty Lime body cream from a couple of seasons ago–not sure if I’ll add a perfume topper.

Yes! I love horror, I love the cast. Last time Adam Driver did a Jim Jarmusch movie he gave the underrated performance of the decade in Paterson, so I’m happy to see them together again, even if this is going to be a very different movie. But horror is my thing, so 😀

Good Morning! SOTD is Feu Secret, from a sample. The first time I wore it I thought, this is really nice, kinda like Dzongkha but with smoke instead of peony. But today I put on a little more, and it’s like the whole thing just opened up. It’s fantastic! Have been planning a sample order, and Bruno just shot to the top of the list.

Spent the weekend refereeing two colleagues, both in their 50s, who were acting like 12-year-olds over something stupid. This kind of thing burns me up. And it doesn’t help that my GM is playing favorites with the one who is frequently not pulling her weight. I swear, this is the last salaried managerial posistion I will ever take. Once this job is over, I am strictly a wage slave.

Right. Rant over. Thanks for reading.

My local drugstore (the one of Paco Rabanne La Nuit) surprised me again. They have one Guerlain Idylle (fairly cheaply) and a(n) Hermes – Caleche Eau Delicate (not so cheaply, but still reasonable). Yet again I’ll have to buy unsniffed if I do commit. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I had a sample of Idylle once and liked it but I felt it was similar enough to Jour d’Hermes that I didn’t need to have both around.
I heard good things about the Eau Delicate but have not tried it.

Funny you should mention it because today I actually am wearing La Nuit de Paco Rabanne! I hate-Hate-HATED it when it was launched in 1985: 25 or so years later I got a vintage sample in a sampler pack from one of the decanting services and it was INSTANT LOVE for that style of dark dangerous honeyed chypre everyone stopped using as a template some time in the early nineties. (I have a few drops left: one day soon I’ll splurge and pour them onto my skin with abandon, and enjoy the hell out of them.)

I think you missed my post last week. : )
I bought this blind – it was a steal. For me it is not nearly as skanky as some people claim (but mine is EDT, not EDP), but it has bones and personality. It perfectly illustrates how insubstantial and bland the current offerings are. IMO, of course!

Your opinion is my opinion: most everything being made nowadays feels thin and pale and uninteresting compared to things from thirty or forty or fifty years ago.

And yes, the EDP is a powerhouse, very animalic. I was unable to appreciate it in 1985: I learned a lot in the intervening years.

Fils de Dieu, because it arrived from the swapmeet yesterday and even though I love trying out all those new scents in the swapmeet, it’s lovely to get something you know you’ll love….I hope this holds up for another 3hours and then fades – I’m headed to a Barre class over lunch and don’t want to reek too much there.
A question: I’m down to the last leaves of my Mariage Freres Tea (If you’re looking for a place to buy it, ZGO perfumery in San Francisco has a large collection of their teas). I’m looking for a slightly cheaper alternative and would love some suggestions!

Palais des Thes is not really cheaper, I don’t think, but but you can sometimes find it cheaper in the US, just depends.

I am very fond of both Harney and Upton, but more for just plain teas than flavored teas. If your reason for loving MF is the many flavored options, you might try Adagio, OR, try finding people to go in with you on an MF order from France…much cheaper that way if you can split the cost of the shipping.

goodness I’ve missed this scent, haven’t worn it in ages, it feels perfect today, like a cool drink of water on a hot day.

Yay for autism awareness! We say “the force” is strong in my family as I have two uncles, a nephew, and a son with austistic traits. I teach at a school with a special day class that mainstreams autistic students into my music classes. It’s wonderful to see all young people respond to music in their own way.

Have a fantastic day, fragrance friends! I’m thinking of you. 😀

Wearing my current go-to: Jour d’Hermes on one arm, Gap Spun Orange Blossom on the other. I’m running low on the Hermes, but have had ups and downs with it. I’m seriously considering replacing it though, because I like it. The market is so saturated and polar (either cheap ingredients or $$$) that it’s simply easier to go with the stuff I know. Easy = Good.

I was going to dig into my swapmeet treasures, but I got a call from a tech working on my project super early this morning, before I had meant to be awake, so the whole morning was a bit of a fug. In my disorientation, I reached for something comforting instead of exciting, and now I smell of Bois Blonds. It’s very nice and I’m glad I chose it, even though it means not trying out my swapmeet items yet. (I got THREE packages yesterday! Christmas in April.)

Anyway, seems like the issues with my project have been resolved, which is a huge comfort.

Glad your project has gone well. Isn’t perfume mail the best? Back in the glory days of swapping on Makeupalley, I just loved getting all those little packages. Sometimes I wondered whether I was hooked on perfume, or hooked on getting things in the mail ?

Hahaha omg ringthing, I know exactly how you feel!!! I wonder that a lot! Getting things in the mail, being part of this really wonderful community–there are a lot of perks associated with this hobby, and I am never quite sure how much has to do with my love of perfume vs. my love of all the ancillary benefits.

SOTD: Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury (wait… does that count for the CP?) The sweater I’m wearing still smells vaguely perfumey from my visit to Indigo last week 🙂

My first swapmeet package arrived yesterday, so I had a chance to try Bvlgari au The Bleu. It was so soothing that I spritzed on a bit more before bed. Lovely stuff.

I’ve only tried the edp at department stores a couple of times, and I do remember liking that as well, but it’s maybe rounder and more floral 🙂

Gallivant Brooklyn. I like it much better than Tel Aviv, which started irritating my throat when I reapplied yesterday. It’s just such a happy fragrance. Fun and youthful, but not in a generic Eau de Gen Z, Daisy Dream Eau So Sunshine Viva La Ooh La La way.

Hoping I still love it at day’s end instead of start choking on it.

Tiffanie, my screen name is inspired by Borges’ book of imaginary beings; the monkey of the ink well is from Chinese folklore, he sits on a person’s desk and once they have finished writing, drinks up the leftover ink. Which is an image that charmed me so much it stuck with me.

I do like your friend’s saying, may have to borrow that from time to time!

I used to read my kids Shel Silverstein’s “Sick” whenever they were struck down by those disappearing ailments . . .

“I cannot go to school today,”
      Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I’m going blind in my right eye. . . .”

Here’s the rest if you don’t have a copy at home:

Thanks! We have one of the Silverstein books but I’m not sure if this is in it. We were traveling over the weekend so it’s certainly possible that she picked up a bug somewhere, but I’m currently thinking I should have questioned her a bit further . . .

my daughter, who is a bit older, would go through bouts of stomach pain and then stay home (or get picked up from school) and seem mysteriously better. I finally took her to the doctor and turns out someone just needed to eat a lot more fruit and veg and fiber in their diet – her complaints were real, but easily remedied. 🙂

Dug into swap spoils today and taking advantage of the cold weather to try the warmer stuff. Went with Kelly Caleche EDP. I’ve only ever worn the EDT and this is pretty different. Sweeter, more powdery-makeup-y with a hint of leather. Reminds me of a much more delicate and refined Lush Imogen Rose. It’s nice!

Had a gawd awful horrible no good day yesterday that turned out totally fine, but I am still feeling a bit woozy from the roller coaster ride. I’m in Tonka from a sample I made at Nordies last week. Really like this one. If I had a “buy” list, this would go on it.

(TMI to follow, so stop reading if that is annoying for you!: My younger son who has had major health challenges his whole life had an eye exam early yesterday and the optometrist spotted a hemorrhage and a mass on his retina and said we needed to see a specialist immediately. I pulled every string I have and got him into a retina specialist by the afternoon. Hours and hours of testing later the verdict was that he does not have a mass and only the teensiest of hemorrhages, which given his medical history the doc did not find surprising. So by 4 PM I was finally able to exhale. All’s well that ends well. No crisis at all. Legs still wobbling, I exit the ride!)

It’s Le Labo Tonka 25, which Kafkaesque found “dull as dishwater.” I disagree. It is floral and woody with a bit of anise thrown in, and very pretty. I have to say that true to Le Labo form, I am not really getting much Tonka off it. I am a bit phobic of scents with anything cuminy or cedary that hints of sweat. I am not getting that scary sweat note in the least despite cedar being listed in the notes. So, to my nose, it is a sweet cedar.

BF Au Dela Narcisse for another crazy day.

Just NOW at 1030, I’m having my first cup of coffee!!! WTH?! I’ve never worked anywhere that doesn’t have coffee available SOMEWHERE at 7am….?

This has GOT to be unconstitutional!

I went op-shopping yesterday ( charity shop ) and found a vintage bottle of Boucheron for $6 and a mini of Jaipur also for $6 so am wearing Boucheron today. This was one of my entry-level perfumes when I was young, still at school. Still a great perfume. Also, for fun I dyed my natural grey hair three days ago to brown and neither my husband nor son have noticed. Tonight I think I will stand in the corner with a lampshade on my head and surprise them when they try to change the bulb. Boucher On everyone!

My hubby is kind of the same. I can get my hair highlighted at the salon and he doesn’t even notice. I will dye my hair at home from time to time, and still he barely notices any difference, the only thing being that I’m at home to do it. Same thing with makeup; he tells me I look the same with it or not, I’m not sure if I should be insulted or pleased.

I started out the day with Alien aqua Chic. Took my son for a haircut and retested Alien Fusion at the mall. This time I’m getting the cinnamon all the way through. I kind of smell like dentyne gum and juicy fruit gum combined. So… yeah, maybe it’s growing on me.

I had my eyelashes done this morning and I have an eye exam this afternoon, so no perfume until afterwards. Then I think I’ll put on my Teatro alla Scala. I’ve been thinking about it.

Other things I’ve been thinking about: The past two nights I have been unable to get the refrain from “Message in a Bottle” out of my head as I’m trying to go to sleep. “Sending out an SOS” repeats over and over and the rhythm is so catchy it makes me more awake than I was when I got into bed. I need to put a slower song in its place!

I have extensions. The woman who does them takes about twenty minutes to do both eyes, and I go every three weeks, although I can push it to four if I’m busy. They open up my eyes amazingly, and I never have to wear mascara.

And to be really mean. . .

A singer in a smoky room. The smell of wine and cheap perfume for a smile they can share the night, it goes on and on and on and on…don’t stop believing, hold on to the feeling,
streetlight people, don’t stop believing, hold on to the feeling, streetlight people, don’t stop believing, hold on to the feeling, streetlight people . . .

I’ve been wearing them for more than 10 years. I have found that if the technician is bad, my eyelids get red and itchy from the glue. The glue should not touch your eyelid at all, only the lash and the extension.

I am finally trying out Zoologist Chameleon! I admit I am a sucker for a good summery/beachy scent and I think this fits into that category. Definitely not suntan lotion territory, but very tropical for sure. A touch of saltiness even. I like it a lot and could see myself wearing it a ton in the summer…or even in winter wanting to pretend like it’s summer lol.

I’ve had a really stressful afternoon at work today, my boss had a go at me because I told some parents that I’m leaving on Friday, as I want to say goodbye, and I know they will appreciate having the opportunity to talk with their pre schoolers about it. I know she is bullying and unreasonable, but it’s still stressful, so glad I’m going on Friday!

    Late to the party!

SOTD = Herve Gambs Hotel Particulier

Vanilla, incense, tonkabean, sandalwood, patchouli. There’s supposed to be rose and geranium but my nose did not detect them. That said, I had an olfactory MOMENT when the elevator opened with no one inside and I swear I smelled ROSE JAM!!! So, either someone who got off at a lower floor wore it or, it was me when the whoosh of air that came out of the elevator blew around me and stirred up the rose / geranium!

This was a Lisbon vacation purchase in December 2018 and I ❤️it!

A pox on Dick’s Sporting Goods! I went there after work hoping to try trail shoes. Well, the sales floor was switched around and women’s shoes section moved to the other side of the floor, with only 1/5 of the styles they had as recently as about a month or so ago. AND, there was NO PLACE to sit and try on the shoes! What the —??? I’m very happy with my mid-ankle Merrell’s so will purchase the waterproof trail shoes online (and probably not Dick’s online unless it’s cheapest there).
