Thursday scent of the day 3/14

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2019 295 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and Pi Day! (What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in my last few drops of Christian Dior Midnight Poison, by Olivier Cresp (and Jacques Cavallier).

Reminder: 3/15 will be Olivier Friday...wear a fragrance by Olivier Cresp or Olivier Gillotin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other Olivier connection you can devise.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Which version? You smell great either way. If you like the edp, it’s worth making the slightly-uncomfortable trip to an Hermes store to try the parfum (which is heaven in a bottle). Ebay often has reasonably priced bottles, and the parfum is a smooth operator.

Rats! I still can’t believe I gave my bottle of Noa away. It was years ago when I went through a dumb purge period of getting rid of things I liked but didn’t wear often. I learned my lesson and now only pass on things I’m sure I don’t want to wear any more.

    Hello all!

I’m in Dzongkha today, sweating in the “winter” humidity. It’s almost a perfect scent and I absolutely adore it.

I love Midnight Poison — I bought it the day it launched in the UK — because advertising be damned, it’s a unisex rose, which the world can never have enough of, and that bottle is killer. It really is a mystery why sales were so poor.

I think it’s the chamomile/herbal notes that are so comforting. I like the eau de toilette version, it’s slightly less herbal and more patchouli-forward.
I wish they still made the body cream, it was delightful!

After a Rodrigo day yesterday I’m doing Jean Paul today. My SOTD is Chant d’Arômes which is one of my favourites of his. There is a sad lack of Oliviers in my collection so I’ll have to think of a more indirect Olivier connection.
Tea is MF Parzival, which I wasn’t quite sure about initially but that is growing on me. MF is brilliant at flavoured teas.

I “needed” it as soon as I had smelled it 😉
I can’t think of what I would compare it too. It’s a peachy floral on a mossy base, so the drydown is ever so slightly bitter. It’s very much a Guerlain but not as big as some of the others. It’s very lovely.

Yes! The irony of it all is that these kids would have been just fine at a Ye Olde Liberal Arts College in Somewhere Minnesota or in the case of teh actress daughter just setting her up in an apartment in NYC or Paris and have her go to finishing school. But committing mail fraud? How do you live that down as the kid in question????

That bribery story has me and most of my (professor) friends just steaming. We all teach in a working-class university with lots of children of immigrants who typically are older and often work full-time while going to school. Many are extremely bright but haven’t had the advantages of good schools, money, travel, internships, tutoring for the SAT’s, etc. Grrrrr.

Similar here – I’m a professor at a tiny community college in the middle of nowhere, and most of my students can hardly afford our relatively cheap tuition.

Community college is so valuable and really helps so many people open the doors to careers OR help them narrow down a path of academic inquiry!

I have take classes at community college in French, in theater design and production, in fashion design. All valauble, all things I have used and shared.

Finally sampling Tiger’s Nest (thanks AnnE!) and I’m finding it very calming. Jessica referred to it as meditative in her review, and I agree. Waiting to see how long it lasts on me before making a verdict but so far so good. I’ll be stashing the samples away for stressful work days.

Coin op mentioned Rose de Siwa recently which reminded me that I need to wear it. Such a great scent and I’m hoping that I smell like spring even though we have more snow on the ground now than we had most of this winter. I am willing it to melt but the snow banks stubbornly refuse to go away.
I went to stew and story last night at a local historic inn with a friend. The readers were retired college professors. So fun!

Such a lovely and gentle rose. We’ve been blessed with a very mild winter, although the last week or so has been incredibly wet and windy. No hurricanes or blizzards, just good old storms.

I think I’m in Olivier Cresp’s Rochas Femme, but I’m not really sure what year my decant is from. I know it’s parfum de toilette concentration. Anyway, I appreciate Femme but have decided after multiple attempts that it’s not for me. It feels like it wears me rather than the other way.

My elbow is slowly feeling better. I managed not to sleep on it last night, but I also got a bad night’s asleep due to the elbow and my dinner not agreeing with me. My stomach still isn’t feeling great so I may duck out of work a little early if it’s not better this afternoon. Thanks for all the nice comments yesterday!

Inspired by Robin, I wore Marni today, but because I was decanting Memo Tiger’s Nest yesterday, I thought Inwould layer them and I did. Marni, however, did not stand a chance with Tiger’s Nest. It pretty much disappeared as soon as I applied Tiger’s Nest!

For anyone else thinking of splitting Tiger’s Nest or any other Memo Paris perfume, be forewarned that the sprayer is not very decant-friendly.

Hello from Lisbon! I haven’t managed to keep up with NST at all while I’ve been on holiday for the last couple of weeks, so I’ve got lots of reading to do. I spent rather a lot of money on perfume in Paris. It was planned, but still added up to a scary amount, and my next confession to Donatella will be lengthy. I’m travelling with my sister-in-law, who has also made lots of perfume purchases.

We visited the Dusita boutique and had the loveliest experience. We were welcomed by the owner, Pissara Umavujani, who offered us tea and coffee, and showed us all her perfumes. I was quite star-struck 🙂 I bought Le Sillage Blanc, which was on my list, and my sister-in-law bought Erawan. Pissara gave us samples of everything, and she wrote us both personal thank you cards. We were the only customers, and must have been there for well over half an hour.

We had really good customer service everywhere, and knowledgeable sales assistants, now I just need to save enough money to visit Paris again!

I would say more like Nahema than Yvresse. The peach in Yvresse is fizzy and a little green, with a herbal aspect that always makes it smell like the best fruity wine ever. I would call Jaipur less gourmand than that, and more floral. Though not quite as floral as Nahema, which appears to me to be rose-peach more than peach-rose.

SOTD is Majda Bekkali J’ai Fait un Rêve Claire from a sample. It’s quite nice but maybe a little too sweet for me. It’s a soft lightly powdery and woody white floral melange- reminds me a little of a woodier Opardu with a hint of spice.

I’ve been mostly drying it because, winter, but I actually only dry my crown/roots and mostly leaving the rest. And I mean like 3 minutes of drying. Not sure if not drying it at all will result in crunchy hair. I’ve also used it on dry hair the next day for added texture. Plus I really just like the smell!

Doesn’t it depend a little where the digit is? If you thought Pi started with 4 and have been wondering why people celebrate in March…that’s one thing. But if it’s the 13th digit – that still puts you way up ahead of the crowd 🙂

I’ve seen some science nerds react to finding they were incorrect on a certain point, so I have a secondhand understanding of your existential angst here. Life will go on, and your schema will be rearranged a little towards more correctness.

Ok I might be able to fit it in tonight because I think my boyfriend and I are walking to pick up some healthy dinner because we’ve been eating a lot of heavy food lately. I’ll be getting the tastiest vegan sandwich I’ve every had – za’atar smashed chickpea with shredded beets, avocado, cucumber, pickled red onion, lemon harissa tahini and farm greens. In between our apartment and the healthy restaurant is Pie Bar. It’s a bar that also serves pie AND they have a walk up window for ordering pie to go. I should be able to talk the bf into it. ?

A life without pie is not a life worth living for me. It is possible to be healthy AND consume pie occasionally, and it’s important to me to find balance. I’d rather have pie on pi day and have an extra week of no-buy.

Someday, I dream of sitting down with a whole pie, starting in the center, and seeing how much of it I enjoy eating in one sitting.

I was intending to carry on with the CP but it turns out that the Angel I’m wearing Garden of Stars: La Violette is by Francoise Caron, oh well it still smells good and very violetty.

The Garden of Stars I have bottles of, rose and violette have their own distinct personalities, they resemble Angel in that they’re long lasting but different enough. You know, where I am in the UK samples of them are still reasonably priced on eBay. Another interesting Thierry Mugler series the miroir ones which now cost much less than when they were introduced.

Maybe that’s exactly why it didn’t catch on…the patch is too patch-like for modern tastes? I mean, it’s no Angel (ha) but maybe Dior’s market is considerably different.

I’m in Mazzolari Lui today from a dabber sample. I just sent off a bunch of samples and don’t want them piling up again, so I was planning using up the whole sample, but thankfully I did NOT!

If you like skank, try this one out. I have a pretty high tolerance for it, but at one point about 10 minutes after application, I can honestly say I smelled like a cesspool! ?

Thankfully, it’s continuing to develop, and it’s actually quite pretty right now.

From cesspool to sublime- my kind of scent. Happy Almost Friday Day all! ✌?

Hello all and thank you for the kind notes and encouragement after I posted about my plumbing problem and astronomical repair estimate yesterday. I’m looking into alternative plumbers to get more bids. My SOTD is Nez a Nez Bal Musque since it’s warm, sweet, musky, and spicy and I don’t need to look out for anyone around me, just spending the day at home reading and (I hope) writing and (maybe) grading. This one is potent and probably the only scent I have tried with licorice that I really like.

Failing the CP, but celebrating spring like weather in Chamade!

Koyel gave me a sample of Champagne by Germaine Monteil, and I love it. But do I really want to hunt down a hard to find vintage, not really. But I would like to find something similar – any ideas?

I’d describe it as a musty floral, a little sweet. I don’t get any aldehydes from it. It doesn’t say it has oakmoss in it, but something is musty and I like what it is, whatever it is.

Well, they say it is aggregate. And one inoculation after a year of not being inoculated lowers its efficacy (also, this year the soup just wasn’t as good a fit with the virus as in previous years). With an immune compromised child in the house we are religious about our vaccinations. That said, said child got the whooping cough even after a steady and detailed diet of vaccines!

Also, a lot of people label any infectious-type syndrome “the flu” without actually having been tested for actual Influenza. A host of viruses can feel like influenza but aren’t. And no vaccine is 100% effective. Effective enough to not have pandemics, though! (I think we take that for granted in our first little world).
And its bummer your son was one of the unfortunate ones, but glad it hasn’t stopped you from vaccinating!

True and people deciding not to get vaccinated or vaccinate their kids reduces herd immunity. So even if the average person will just feel miserable, they can spread it to someone compromised who might actually die from it. I think people tend to forget the communal aspect.

Beautiful here too! I actually dusted off my bike to see if I still remembered how to ride. I’m hoping we don’t have to pay the piper by facing blizzard-like conditions in the next week or two…

I’m thinking that too much warm weather early on might result in a truly nasty pollen season here. That happened not too long ago, and it was miserable.

It was in the sixties here today, but rain and nasty wind. I think we go back to thirties and forties for the week, but dry.

Rain is in the forecast here for the overnight hours and tomorrow. Not sure about wind.

Juniper Sling in the morning, then some Tauer Rose Flash, which was too fruity und Sweet for my liking. Bought a Vintage Coco from ebay, but i Think the bottle is vintage, but the Juice is fake…11€lost. But a pretty Splash bottle it is..

Shalimar again. I’m enjoying my week of it. I need to figure out what samples/decants I’m going to take to NY with me, though.

It’s been a crazy week at work. Just trying to get through it so I can go on vacation. Ugh.

Be sure to take into account perfume sniffing in NYC! That could change your numbers somewhat. ?

That person has a whole bunch of pi images, check them out! It’s the second time I’ve used one of them on pi day.

Commando on perfume earlier in the day. Trying the Atelier Pacific Lime cologne this evening. I get some lime and quite a bit of eucalyptus from it.

Mom and I went for a walk in a local park this afternoon to enjoy a day of very nice weather. We haven’t had very nice weather here in quite some time. It was clear out, and I think the temperature was in the 60s F.

Almost forgot — we’d gone grocery shopping in the morning, and I got a pumpkin pie in honor of Pi day. The sale price? $3.14, of course. The pie itself? Yummy.

I still need to sniff that atelier. It sounds really refreshing.

In my layperson’s version of what “fresh” means, I thought it smelled fresh. The eucalyptus wasn’t at a sinus-clearing strength, but if you like eucalyptus, it’s very definitely there. I enjoyed the lime aspect. For those who enjoy more of a bracing scent than a sweet scent, I’d recommend a sniff. 🙂

Sprayed myself with Vol d’Nuit edt tonight. It was a reward for making it through the week so far ?.

Robin, i bet you smell absolutely lovely. I have not tried Midnight Poison but I’m still a fan of the original.

Midnight Poison is worth trying if you can find a sample.

All the Poison flankers are very different from the original…I still like Hypnotic the best, but this one was darned good.
