Wednesday scent of the day 3/13

Posted by Robin on 13 March 2019 292 Comments

Happy Hump Day! There are 7 days (plus, as of this writing, 7 hours) left until the end of winter. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am in Marni layered with Marni Rose.

Reminder: 3/15 will be Olivier Friday...wear a fragrance by Olivier Cresp or Olivier Gillotin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other Olivier connection you can devise.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Spring Summer 2019 Marni campaign.

In D&G Light Blue by Olivier Cresp. I don’t reach anymore for this perfume and the cp was a good excuse for it.

I like it and I should bring the bottle out again in summer. I have a big one and after so many years it is still more than half. So many perfumes have come in front if it!

Nice! Light Blue was one of the first samples I got from Sephora after falling down the rabbit hole. Maybe an unpopular opinion among perfumistas, but I tend to like perfumes that smell like shampoo. I think Light Blue is one of those.

I agree that Light Blue is very unpopular among perfumistas and it is almost an heresy to say you wear it. However, I don’t think it is so terrible and I find it to be a no brainer, especially in hot summer days.

I think this fragrance smells lovely on others. Something in Light Blue turns very ugly on my skin, unfortunately.

I do too, there’s nothing with Lt Blue at all in my book, I think it’s rather nice.
I own several perfumes that smell like expensive shampoo or spa soap, whatever makes me happy is what I always say!

I thunked a couple of bottles of Noa in my pre-perfumista days. I might have picked up a third one, but it had disappeared by that time. No regrets about using it up, or not having it now. ?

Nope. Not a one. No Oliviers. I’m in a hand lotion that reminds me of the scent of Amouage’s Bracken. I’ll look for my decant of that one–which seems right for today.

Hypnotic Poison today, maybe it will hypnotize me into forgetting my dryer broke down and I have to haul everything to the laundromat? Definitely a FWP but that doesn’t make me hate it less. On the other hand, the birds are singing in the mornings again 🙂

I took our stuff to the laundromat the first couple years of marriage, eons ago. The one good thing is that you can get everything done at once. But it sure costs a lot more than it used to.

I had to do the laundromat thing a few months back, and the ONLY benefit is that you can get a bunch of machines spinning at once, and be done with the whole mess in a couple of hours….. 🙂

Other than that, it’s a huge hassle for sure!

So true! My washer won’t spin towels (something wrong with the sensors) so I take all of my linens to the laundromat. Costs a small fortune. I know I need to replace the machine but I haven’t had time to look for one!

My spring break project (next week): take our pillows and comforters to the laundromat to wash them. I sure know how to live!

Part of the reason we bought the house we did was that — after a decade of our laundromat-only existence — it had two laundry rooms, an old workhorse washer/dryer in the unfinished basement and a new laundry annex off the main bedroom. Almost eight years on, this laundry Nirvana still makes me happy, but neither machine can handle a full/queen/king comforter or pillows.

Working from home today as I participated on a scheduled call that ended at 1:30 this morning. My colleague and I gave ourselves the morning off ?

Ooh, Marni! I will wear mine this week!

SOTD = Rising Phoenix Kopi Luwak Attar

I’m not even going to think hard about the sourcing methods because it involves ?. Anyway, it is a very nice coffee woudy scent.

Extra-curricular activities wise, I have to finish decanting, then mailing the Memo Paris Tiger’s Nest as well as the Carat travel spray splits and complete 2 swaps and a freebie. The good thing is after this Friday, I am off for some R&R, then back to work on the 26th! I’m going to Tampa / St. Pete for 4 days next week and I look forward to being immersed in the arts!

I am looking for a recommendation on packing cubes. I saw Sharper Image packs for sale but they have very poor reviews – e.g. Falling apart at the seams from one use! I may as well use grocery produce bags! Thank you.

Hi Hajusuuri! I love my packing cubes and have used them for years and they were not expensive. I just looked at the tag and it says “Rick Steve’s Europe” – not sure if that was the brand? Good luck finding some; they really do help. Have a great time in Florida!

I also use the eBags brand. I have multiple sizes, and they have been all over the world with us many times — absolutely no problem with them. Zippers and fabric have all held up beautifully, and I routinely overstuff them in order to compress whatever is in them. I should say that I rarely use them for short trips when I take only my (true, international-sized) carry-on, but for our longer trips it something like a wedding or beach trip, where I have to account for multiple types of outfits/activities during a single trip, they are great.

For packing cubes you could try either Eddie Bauer or LL Bean. I have two zippered cubes that have lasted me at least 15 years – they say “Eagle Creek Travel Gear” on them, and I honestly don’t know where I got them or if they’re even still in business, but there’s always the internet!

Love my Eagle Creek Specter Tech. Probably overpriced but lighter weight than most of them, and very helpful in terms of organization. I have the cubes and the sacs and the shoe sacs…so far, none of the zippers have broken but I assume it could happen.

And will add, they are not lightweight, nor cheap either, but the Burton utility & accessory pouches in clear mesh have totally changed my feelings about my backpack, which is now totally organized & easy to find everything I want.

And the Burton clear mesh “low maintenance kit” is now how I travel with my tea…bags in the bottom section, strainers & loose leaf pouches in the top section. Yes, I am sick!

Agree that at least being partially mesh is HUGE help when it comes to packing organization. I travel at least one week per month for work (sometimes two) so I literally live out of my suitcase. The cheapo ones I bought are part mesh and have changed my attitude towards my suitcase.

Wow. I usually travel with a backpack too since no one can tell me to not have it on my back (unlike my daily commute where someone thought my Longchamps tote was a backpack but I refuse to put it on the dirty floor – besides, of I take it off my shoulder, the train was so crowded that his crotch would be right against my butt cheeks – no, no, no!)

Work is acutely stressful at the moment, with a lot of people drama that I find emotionally draining. So what’s a girl to do? Apparently, eat ice cream and shop on ebay. I only bought ONE bottle during ALL of last year but managed to buy TWO last night on ebay. Stress shopping is the worst. Do you guys do this?

That said– I got 2 things that I’ve been dying for: a half bottle of Amouage Beloved for a great deal and a bub of my almost-empty Hermes Eau Claire des Merveilles, since it’s discontinued (and only $30).

I figure by perfume math, Donatella style, these don’t count right? BUBs don’t count for discontinued items, and the other will be a gift. Right?

I know, right? It has quickly disappeared from the discounters, and I was afraid to wait. This one really grew on me. While it’s no the stunning beauty of Amouage Beloved or Chanel 31 RC and some of the major life-changing fragrances, it’s a unque, pretty, wearable, comfy fragrance with great heft and sillage. The salty orange balances perfectly with the milky goodness.

I totally stress shop–which is a dreadful habit if I am stressed about finances. 😛 Yesterday I inadvertently landed on the perfect solution. Drove out to a Marshall’s to shop for fancy liquid and bar soaps–I am too cheap to pay $15 for a liquid soap that is 50% ye olde in Provence all natural hip logo marketing, and there is one Marshall’s in the area that has a good selection. Anyway, I sniffed and picked my way to settling on about a dozen soaps, plus a ceramic bowl and serving platter, plus greeting cards, and a candle when I realized that I had neglected to set my watch forward and was running late to pick up my son. So I raced to the checkout line and stood behind about 20 people. Eventually all my purchases were rung up, bagged and ready to go–which is when I discovered I had left my wallet at home. Yup. I was that nutty lady frantically rifling through my bag with nothing to show for it . . . I apologized profusely. Ran to my car. Dashed away to collect my son.

      Voila. Money saved.

Well done! I should try that.

Going to stores rarely woos me into random purchases, but ebay is my weakness. It’s the FOMO on a great deal for something that I’ve really wanted.

Ohhhh I know how that feels, that just happened to me recently. Worse yet, I had taken my 91 year old mother shopping at her favorite thrift store and found myself having to whine “mom, I need some money!” (She was promptly repaid lol.)

Yes I do stress shopping too but it’s usually for jewelry. And multiple $$$. Earlier this morning I did some in fact but not too expensive–bought some of those Colors of the World lipsticks they keep advertising on Facebook. They’re vegan and have nice colors and support good causes, so easy to justify. Just bought a sample pack of three. I can report in on them once I’ve gotten them and been able to try some. (No affiliation.)

I spent the morning at my kids school talking about Nowruz, and I wore a flowery wrap Escada top I picked up for a song and a dance at Housing Works (most NYC people on here will know of this store). I also made Persian rice cookies..yum!

Tea is Bois Cheri black vanilla tea..

    SotD is Ormonde Woman.

Like some of the other NST’ers i have been suffering from some stress lately (related to both work and personal issues). I got quite emotional last weekend and also at work about trivial stuff. That is a serious sign that something is wrong, because usually I am quite the rational type and you will only see me cry when shit is really sad (when a loved one dies). But I am glad I had this wake up call.

so today I had a good talk with my manager who was very understanding and helpful. Just talking about it and getting things off my chest already lifted my spirits somewhat.
Even though it was somewhat hard in the beginning to acknowledge that I have a problem, in the end i am so glad I had this realisation/insight and acted quickly on it.

Bottom line: talk to people about stuff that bothers you?

(( Jiji )) – It’s good that you got things off your chest, that is good! I’m so glad your supervisor was supportive!
When work gets particularly stressful, I try and take a walk (of any length) on lunch, being in nature restores the balance of things, usually I see a cute doggie along the way, so bonus that I get tail wags. Take care of yourself!

Yeah, the weird thing is, it took me quite long to realise I am struggling and heading towards a burn out. Maybe its because I always rationalize stuff, especially when it comes to work. Anyways, the struggle is not over, but acknowledging it and talking about it is the first step right? ?
And yes doggies and cats (ah heck, most animals, except for mosquitoes) help to relieve stress! ?????

I’m glad you let it out. I’ve had a good cry quite a while back and the answer was hire 2 more people – the work we did involved the equivalent of working for the CEO of a company and when your boss asks you a question that is impossible to answer (e.g. why does 1 + 1 = 2?), it makes one feel really stupid considering the group had 3 out of 4 people with a master’s degree and no one could answer the question (she herself could not answer the question but would not admit to it.. anyway, she became a minister…poor flock).

But who’s counting the hours, right? 😉

Not following the CP today; I’m wearing Carthusia Aria di Capri today to decide whether to put this in the freebie-with-swap pile. (It’s going in that pile, I’ve decided. Mimosa is so beautiful in real life, but in this perfume…hm.) I thought about listing out the samples/decants I’d like to give away with my swaps so that I can send more personalized packages, but…I am very lazy. Maybe I’ll just list the bigger decants/travel sprays.

This afternoon, I’m going to sit on a panel of female engineers to speak to high school girls who are visiting my company. I feel supremely unqualified for this, partly because I’m not really an engineer (I’m a scientist!), and partly because children are scary. How do I always get roped into outreach?

The flankers dial down the lavender replacing it with a sweetish floral for the floral flanker , and a faded rose for bloom of rose. The dry down on both flankers is less interesting, more of a blur …less focused. The bloom of rose flanker has a lot less projection, so it is more of a wrist to nose perfume than a fill the room scent. It fades more quickly too. So…in my opinion Mon Guerlain is the most rounded of the three from start to finish and is heaviest on lavender, the floral one is the sweeter version but floral all the same ( not gourmand sweet, not petite robe noir sweet) , and rose bloom is quite flat but pretty and least likely to be noticed by grinches etc. i like the original the best of the three

I think the flankers don’t quite commit fully to the replacement/ added notes which creates a lack of identity in a way. The lavnder/ jasmine of the florale and the lavender/rose of the bloom of rose seem a bit awkward, and miss the mark a bit because they are neither one thing or the other…whereas the original knows what it is. If that makes sense.

Got a meeting with a government agency to help me with health insurance. I am trying to pick a perfume for it. No 19 extrait or Infusion d’Iris? I want to stay in vintage BaV but really shouldn’t. My mom decided that she was going to take me up on the offer on an Amazon gift card that I ordered. I have enough to cover the Amazon Prime and then some. So she can get a cheap book to read or save it for something else.

Joining the stressed out club. I had a morning dentist appointment that didn’t go very well. It went so poorly, that I don’t want to go back, but I kind of have to. It’s not even about the work, it’s how a new hygienist treated me.
Anyway.. off to work wearing Coromandel for a dreary rainy day. I’m sorry for those of you getting the blizzard. Stay safe.

Wish I could send you to my dentist. After 50 years, my old dentist sold his practice to a lovely woman, who has hired all women. Everyone in the office is an immigrant from a different continent, and the conversation is usually hilarious. When I show up, the hygienist (from Kenya) and the dentist (from Korea) share their stories about issues they are having with their kids. I knew things were different after my first visit with them. While the dentist was whittling away at goodness knows what in my mouth I was treated to her parenting woes–her son was pooping in his pants at school and was being threatened with being kicked out of kindergarten. She kept asking me for advice–which was hard to give with various dental tools in my mouth. Needless to say, it was an errrr well hmmm unusual dental check up!

Haha! I want to see your dentist. My dentist is from Turkey and has a lovely accent and a good sense of humor. Unfortunately, he is also a space case in the extreme. Sometimes I catch the hygienists rolling their eyes at him after he leaves the room.

If the hygienist is rude to you again, maybe you should tell the office manager or your dentist?

I had a similar experience. I like my dentist but this particular hygenist was both overly rough and very condescending. Now when I make an appointment, I ask them to make sure she won’t be matched up with me. They’ve respected my wishes and I’ve been happy with everyone else. There may not be enough hygienists at your office but may be worth a try if you like your dentist.

I do love the bottles. I usually steer clear of most celeb scents… but I think these are different. ??And now back on the “no buy” wagon for me… ?

I’d say that the Nirvana Rose is closer in style to Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme. It’s somewhat darker than the Florabotanica. I get mostly vetiver and red roses from it. YMMV, what with body chemistry and all.

CP compliant in a sample of Penhaligon’s Peoneve. It’s a nice peony rose with low sillage when dabbed, so it’s office appropriate.

My elbow was feeling better yesterday evening but is very bad this morning after sleeping on it. It’s bringing my mood down too. I already iced it, so Advil is next on the docket. If it keeps up for a while, I doubt I’ll be in any shape to make decants for the swap meet. I made a little 3ml decant up last night and it took everything out of that arm.

Two tricks from when I had frozen shoulder…if there is room, put something in the bed to prevent you from rolling on the wrong side without waking up. Then put an extra pillow on the side you are facing, so that your arm stays entirely horizontal instead of angling down towards the bed. I hope that makes sense…I was facing two pillows so my entire arm was draped over them and cushioned, then I had a big bolster pillow behind me so it was hard to turn over.

Unfortunately this works best when sleeping alone in a double or queen bed.

Today I’m wearing Sushi Imperiale by Bois 1920. One of the first bottles I bought when I discovered the world of niche perfumes. For the past two days by stress levels have been through the roof so I wore very soft comfort scents (Anima Dulcis and then Oud Satin Mood). I’m bearing up to something more potent today (citrus, spices, patchouli). Not only did I have a stress-related sickness to add on top of my mom’s six or seven ailments, but I spent the entire day yesterday dealing with two major problems–plumbing and my mom’s lost insurance, Medicare, and credit cards. I was literally sent around in a circle by Blue Cross from department 1 to department 2 to department 3 then back to 1 again. It would’ve been comical if it hadn’t been so frustrating. Finally solved that problem after a good hour and a half. Meanwhile the plumbers were here and managed to clear out the backed-up laundry room sink. Their diagnosis of the nature of the problem is that a pipe under my house is bowed (bent) and to fix it will require jack-hammering a hole into my garage floor and tunnelling 25 feet under the house. It’s a 3-day dig at an estimated cost of–wait for this–$18,000 +. I was gasping for air. The good news is…. none really…. but it is not super urgent so I don’t have to make a decision yet. I told them I’m going to have to get a second bid. The joys of home ownership.

Adding my voice to getting a second and third opinion. We had a hot water issue–that is no hot water in our kitchen sink. The problem came about after we had a burst pipe under the sink. We finally got some plumbers in and fortunately did not have too much water damage in the kitchen . . . they fix the immediate issue (after putting a knee through the floor under the sink) for about $300, but said that we needed new pipes outside our kitchen . .. jackhammer, tearing down a wall, etc. Price tag? $25K…. so when we lost hot water (dishwasher next to sink was getting hot water) we procrastinated on the work– 20 months later and one too many parties for dozens of guests resulting in thousands of dishes (okay, slight exaggeration but it felt that way scrubbing away in cold water) I called in our fancy plumber who put in our sewer lateral when we bought the house. His guy showed me that the last plumbers had literally twisted the pipe into almost a knot. He cut it out, replaced it, replaced our faucet, and voila– $350 all in our problems were solved.

      Just saying.

Irish soda bread and coffee before I head out on a hike with the four legged one. The sun is at its highest wattage and beautiful today. Wearing the same clothes as yesterday (Gasp!?), so still smelling like Smoked Anbergeis, which is fine by me.

Last night I pulled up to my sleep spot and noticed a diesel p/u idling just ahead, and kept my eye on it. About 10 minutes later a guy stepped out and headed my way, stopping at the drivers side window, just looking at me. I rolled my window down a bit and asked,
“Can I help you?”…the conversation that ensued was amazing!

Basically, he kept asking me if I was alright and did I need a place to sleep? He has a house on the west side of town if I wanted to sleep there, he works in the lab at the hospital, works nights so he would “bother me.” He was “real concerned about” me.

    What an outstanding citizen! ?☺️

And hajusuuri gets an enabler pin! I had gotten that sample of Malibu Lemon Blossom from Surrender to Chance, and had been thinking of going to look around at the Marshall’s near me.

At the local Marshall’s, I got 1 oz. of Malibu Lemon Blossom for $9.99, 1 oz. of Tommy Girl EdT for $12.99, and 0.5 oz. of Tocca Florence EdP for $10.00. The Tocca Florence was in the clearance section. That was a blind buy.

          Then I went to Sephora…

Jepster may have an enabler pin if she wants one, because I got a rollerball of AERIN Mediterranean Honeysuckle. I liked the sample of that she sent. They had full bottles of Atelier Cologne Mandarine Glaciale, which I’d also liked, but that was out of my budget, so I got a Sephora sample of that. I got a 30 ml bottle of the new one, Pacific Lime. And I got a sample of Yves St. Laurent Mon Paris.

I know that Tommy Girl is pretty inexpensive to start, and I don’t think Pacifica perfumes are expensive either, but I felt like I was getting a bargain anyway. (lol) Sephora had a “Try Me” bottle of Tocca Florence. I don’t think that scent is really my thing, so speak up if you’re interested, perfumista folks.

I have to learn not to get stuff just because it’s in the clearance section. I couldn’t remember what I’d heard about other perfumes in the clearance section. Even at half off or more, Bulgari Rose Goldea was still relatively expensive. I vaguely thought it had gotten good reviews, but didn’t want to do a blind buy of that. There were also several bottles of a perfume called Shi. There were a couple of bottles of a perfume called Shanghai Tang. (My impression with only knowing the name was, “Orientalist much?”) There were gift box sorts of things of Nina Ricci fragrances and Euphoria. Let me know if these sound interesting, and I can see what’s still there.

All the stores you mentioned should take fragrance returns with your receipt and original packaging. Shi, and Goldea are both nice scents, imo, but I didn’t find them very compelling. Sounds like you got the best of the bunch. Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice, lillyjo. 🙂 I already knew I really liked the Malibu Lemon Blossom, Tommy Girl, and Mediterranean Honeysuckle. From what I could tell from spraying on paper from Sephora’s “Try Me” bottle of Atelier Cologne Pacific Lime, I liked that one. I’ve liked several of the Atelier Cologne citrus colognes. So that wasn’t a blind buy. I’ll enjoy all of those. 🙂

Sounds like you have found quite a few perfumes lately that do not bother your dad. As I recall, your mom is also perfume sensitive? Any comments from her?

Mom doesn’t seem to mind the light citrus fragrances, or when I put just a couple of drops of lavender or vanilla essential oil into a couple of tablespoons of sweet almond oil for moisturizing my skin.

I sprayed the Teresa Helbig Old Money perfume on my wrists a few days ago, and immediately realized that was too strong to wear when my folks are in town (or at least in the same house or car). I used witch hazel to get some of it off before they got home from choir practice. Then I handled a leaky little sample of Eau d’Hiver and got some on my fingers. Mom noticed all of that and commented, and Dad was coughing a bit. I washed my hands a couple more times with soap, and wiped a couple more times with witch hazel.

I tried Drole de Rose on my wrists on Tuesday evening, and then got the decant of Amouage Beloved from Lizbee that night. I got a bit of the Amouage on my fingers from handling the bottle. Dad started coughing and wheezing from several rooms away, and Mom had things to say. I realized that the Amouage Beloved was another perfume to wear when Mom and Dad are out of town.

I’ve enjoyed the opportunity from the splitmeet to try various sorts of perfumes, and I’ve also very much appreciated the freebiemeets, too, and the folks who have shared samples that way. Even though I’ve gotten some that are too strong for my folks, it’s all been very educational.

The parents do tend to comment when I wear a rose perfume. A couple of winters ago I put Tauer Rose Oil on my hands. My nose was too dried out for me to smell it much, but they certainly noticed. Dad happened to be be doing the prep for a colonoscopy, on the other side of that story of the house. Mom marched into the room I was in and said, “Dad says you need to get a new hobby.”

Mom only seems to actually be allergic to artificial sandalwood, as far as I can tell. She dislikes the smell of patchouli. They both think several rose perfumes are too strong. There seem to be a number of perfume components that aggravate Dad’s chronic bronchitis, so I actually have been trying not to wear the perfumes that make him wheeze and cough while he’s home. He’s been through a good bit of trial and error along the way. Poor Dad!

Today it’s Angel Les Parfums de Cuir, a buttery leather which mixes well with the Angel base and makes it much more palatable and growun up. I certainly don’t regret having got that limited edition. I also have Liqueur de Parfum which I love even more.

I don’t know if you saw my reply to your comment yesterday about working too many hours? Do you have the type of job where you can be an hourly worker instead if salaried? Over the years, I have found that people have an “easier” time to manage working time if the work is tied to hourly pay increments – both you and the company can assess amount of time required to do the job and use time as the boundary.

Dotto this! I will never work a salaried job again. I NEED a very clear demarcation between “work life” and “personal life.” This is the main reason I have refused any and all attempts to be pressured into managerial roles. No thank you. If you can do it, even if it means changing employers, it’s so worth it. Peace of mind is priceless. ✌?

This was my policy as well. The companies I worked at (high tech), being salaried was a license to be abused with overwork. I refused all promotions that were salaried and involved supervisory duties.

I agree, it was so nice to revisit it, Jalapeno, it is so well blended, perhaps because of the maceration in vats with leather pieces, although I take this explanation with a pinch of salt.

I was up in the forest yesterday at sunrise – around 7.30 – and the tops of the trees glowed red as if on fire. Meanwhile my Number 2 dog had found a dead animal to roll in, which turned out to be a hedgehog…how can that be sensible? Wearing Bracken and planning to do something ( searches brain, nothing there).

Good news! I have a new project for 12 months!

It will be travel to and from Portlandia every week. It will be a push but that’s okay. Will get me closer to retirement. I will be 66 in 2 months and DO NOT want to or have to work when I am 70.

Wearing Tigers Nest am loving this one.

I emailed perfume lounge in Amsterdam about the new Satori – Mizuna? They are having a hard time getting is as Osawa san is having a hard time shipping it out due to some of it’s ingredients.

Still another great fragrance. Œillet Bengale, one of those sleeper scents. Great but quiet about it. Very wearable without being dull.

A quiet day here. Can’t say the same for my brother, who lives in Colorado and is experiencing a ginormous blizzard today. Hopefully his power will stay on. I’m very glad that he is NOT working in that nastiness tonight!

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Oeillet Louis XV EdP, from the sample stash. I felt like carnations today.

Just back from a dentist appointment.

I searched the stash and found Love & Luck; it’s a 7.5 ml spray bottle. I didn’t buy it on purpose, but I believe it was included with a makeup bag I purchased – a little gifty inside. So I’m CP adjacent as this is not the guy’s version.

Incense Extreme today, from Andy Tauer. I’m pretty sure this was a blind buy, and will not be swapped!
