Monday scent of the day 3/11

Posted by Robin on 11 March 2019 230 Comments

The Monday after Daylight Savings! Not surprisingly, it's also National Napping Day, and Sleep Awareness Week. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a splitmeet acquisition, Ormonde Jayne Champaca.

Reminder: 3/15 will be Olivier Friday...wear a fragrance by Olivier Cresp or Olivier Gillotin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other Olivier connection you can devise.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy worst Monday morning of the year. I’ve already snapped at my boss… oops. Not A Morning Person.

I’m wearing Fresh Index Pomegranate Anise, which was one of my very first perfume purchases and of which I still have probably 90 out of 100 mls. I have occasionally thought of swapping or selling it but it has strong nostalgia value and I do like it. I need to use it as a room/bath/etc spray more.

I’m still a fan of some of those early Fresh Index frags, like Cannabis Santal and Fig Apricot (even though I don’t wear them or have bottles).

            Best. Comment. Ever.

That’s exactly how I feel. I really liked this frag. But I don’t see myself ever buying it. I’m not sure why because it’s very nice.

(Psst–consider turning the perfume into body products! Meh perfumes often turn into excellent dry oils, creams, bath salts, and body scrubs!)

Regret also comes in smaller sizes than 100ml

I am sure many fragrances I regret not buying I would still not buy if they were still for sale, so I back your sentiments 100%.

Wearing Bal d’Afrique from an old, old sample. If I could manage to score a decant or bottle that smelled like this old sample, I’d be truly blissed out. This is a lovely vetiver. But I’ve bought two decants that smells like a ton of fake bergamot and not like this floral-lemony-vetiver that the sample that I’m wearing.

I’m wearing Gap Spun Orange Blossom (rollerball). I’m all about citrus + orange blossom. Love it. It’s got a little bit of weirdness to it; I keep thinking the carrier oil has gone off a bit. Or maybe it always had a touch of indole…?

At any rate, it’s my sunshine today, since the weather isn’t providing any.

Robin, I love the sleeping striped cat photo!

Splitmeet twins! but I am wearing Esprit de Oscar.

It’s fun, I am enjoying it. I’m happy I also have a sample of Oscar to compare it to, as well as L’heure Bleu and Apree L’Ondee

I think if you enjoy blue/purple flowers and like cheap thrills you will be over the moon. I like the sparkly opening. It’s smooth enough and soft, feminine with a vintage vibe, but not over the top. After the lemony purple opening, I smell almond. The early dry down has a creamy cocoa buttery muskiness, the later dry down is most reminiscent of the spicy powderiness of the original (currently available) Oscar.

    The split meet is fun!

      YOU smell great!

My 4 year old was MISERABLE and GRUMPY this morning before preschool. It was both terribly sad and adorably cute. Those poor preschool and elementary school teachers that take care of our kids this week. I appreciate their eternal optimism so much in the days following the spring time change.

SotD = Cologne du 68 + Eau des Merveilles

Weird combo, but it works. 😀

Laughing at myself because I was so sleepy this morning I put on EdM after getting dressed even though I had sprayed on Cd68 half an hour before. Perfume autopilot is a dangerous this. The world better be ready because I smell to high heaven.

Wait, travel sprays?! Where are these alleged travel sprays? I do really like this one but it is pricey for basically a citrus cologne (a really good one, though!). A travel spray is tempting, but I seriously don’t think it would last beyond a handful of wears since it’s something that begs for lavish spraying. 30ml would be perfect…

Ack, I should’ve looked it up before saying anything. It seems that not all of the scents are available in travel format: https://www.jamesheeley.com/en/15ml-sets/94-discovery-set-5×15.html Note de Yuzu is not among them. What a bummer 🙁

Though you are quite right, a 30-mL spray that costs 0.3x of the 100-mL spray would really be ideal!

    Guerlain Eau de Cologne.

I haven’t checked in on NST for over a week. I celebrated New Orleans Mardi Gras, then spent a few days in Orlando with my husband, son, daughter in law, daughter and her boyfriend. I think we may have overdid it, because three of us came home sick with upper respiratory stuff. I went to local Urgent Care last night, and I am on antibiotics and decongestants.

I bought Eau de Cologne Imperiale last week at the Disney Epcot Guerlain boutique, and it is one of the only scents I can wear right now without going into coughing fits.

I have missed coming on here, and I hope everyone here will have a lovely week.

I was traveling last week and missed the daily SOTD posts. I was at a conference in TX, where I expected it to be *much* warmer than it was. Still managed to get a sunburn on my face though! I cycled between Caron Pour Un Homme, Cap Neroli, and Agua de Colonia Concentrada all week.

Today I’m in Alyssa Ashley Musk. Had a chance to sniff The Body Shop White Musk at the airport and it was very similar.

Don’t have any FB’s from either Olivier so I’m gonna play with some untested samples this week. I really like this, I might end up wanting more after this is drained. Reminds me of Thanksgiving.

Grumpy from Daylight Savings – that one hour turns me into a total zombie, which is odd because jet lag doesn’t make me feel half as grumpy. I have two Olivier scents – decants of Como Corso and Lavandes Trianon, but ironically, they are both slated for the swap meet! Off to apply lashings of my fils de dieu sample…

I think it is because with jet lag, the travel across time zones usually causes the actual time of sunrise and sunset to change along with the clock. The morning light coming at the same time (by the clock) helps reset your brain. With DST, it is now dark in the morning when I am getting up and going to work whereas it was light last week. The darkness causes my brain to reject the idea that it is morning.

I just read through the Olivier pages (wondering why Polge wasn’t included? His scents are much more to my taste! Too well known?), and it looks like this week will be spent in 10 Corso Como and TF Tobacco Vanille. I’ve also learned that Mercedes-Benz apparently has a suite of fragrances. Hm.

Anyway, I didn’t know what this week’s CP was this morning, so I’m in FM le Parfum de Therese because Regina said there was more to it. I mean…it’s fine…but there are probably a hundred perfumes I’d rather have a travel spray of, so I think it still has to go.

Sun! We have sun! There is no rain in the forecast for the whole week! Amazing! And it helps with the time change, though not enough, I just finished my morning cup of tea and think I need another one immediately.

With my usual impeccable timing, I had decided to do winter heavy hitters this week… just in time for the rain to finally give us a break. We’ll see how long my cunning plan lasts. SOTD is Couteau de Poche Fumabat.

Hm. *peeks out window at blanket of fog*

It hailed vigorously in San Jose yesterday! Afterwards, it looked like it had snowed; the streets were lined with what looked like powdery white! We were surrounded by a bunch of born-and-bred Californians during the storm, and every clap of thunder brought such shrieks. It boggles my mind that there are millions of people who’ve lived through as many thunderstorms in a lifetime as we used to see in Maryland in one summer.

My sister recently moved to California after growing up in the Midwest (where I still am). Earlier this winter, after I’d had a million of those “ugh, supposed to snow again tonight” chats with coworkers, etc., I finally had to ask her: What do people make small talk about when the weather is gorgeous every day??

Also, kitty photo is adorable. My first pair of cats were brother & sister brown tabbies named Mocha and Espresso. Mocha loved sunbeam naps, and would not share a sunbeam with anyone, not even me (his personal human). Espresso was a winter heat hog; I’d wake up freezing in the middle of the night to find that she had meatloafed herself on top of the one heat vent in the bedroom. Clever girl 🙂

On Saturday, my dad decided to rearrange my parents’ bedroom. Instead of having my mom help him, I got lassoed into helping him. He said that I pay attention better and get what he wants me to do when it came time to move the heavy furniture. Still sore and a little tired. Spent yesterday in Epic and spending the day in L’heure de Nuit. Yesterday, the puppy turned a year old. She and my other dog had a little bit of yellow cake and some fried chicken to celebrate.

I climbed to the top of the maple tree yesterday to saw off some branches that were close to the power lines and when I turned around to get down I realised I was stuck so I just stayed up in the tree looking at the view, which was right across the valley and down into the houses below. I was wearing Fiele Viola and it was lovely up in the leaves. I did get down eventually but wasn’t very graceful about it and tore my pants. Wearing willow and amber this morning and don’t even want to talk about it.

Yes I agree about stairs etc. Especially walking down . The other thing is that they can make you feel a bit nauseous, sea sick, at first especially if you do things like looking up and down at your computer screen from notes on the table and that probably happens with your cash register if you are looking from the customer to the register etc. It gets better although there are some things that never quite come right…

Are they bifocals or progressives? It took me weeks to adjust to the progressives, in fact I tried to return them twice and the optometrist talked me into giving it more time. Now of course i am glad I did, but it was rough…headaches & nausea & dizziness and all of it.

1.) I got a sample of J’Adore, just a tiny sprayer, and tried it from that. It’s been a while, but I think I liked it all right. If you got a sample you wouldn’t need to look at a full-sized bottle to try it.

2.) I had progressive lenses for a time. I got used to looking through the top of the lenses for driving, and the middle section of the glasses for a computer screen, but never got used to looking through the bottom of the lenses for reading. I’m rough on glasses and broke the frames. I got glasses just for distance, and had to put them up on my head to read print. This meant holding what I was trying to read two inches in front of me. I just got reading glasses. I can see fine print with them, and can see a couple of feet in front of me clearly, and five or six feet in front of me well enough to recognize smallish objects. I’ve mostly been wearing my reading glasses in the house, and my distance glasses for driving. I love the reading glasses.

With bifocals I think I would try looking out the top part for driving and seeing long distances, and the bottom part for looking at a cash register and customers. Good luck!

Decided to use some of my samples so blindly grabbed PG Cozé Verde, which was nearly a scrubber. After a nice opening with fig it dwindled down to a synthetic dry wood…
Now sampling Jolie Laide Cléo de 5 a 7 from a sample pack i won from Portia. I am not very much into BFW, but its not bad.
The boyfriend is in Budapest, sending me pics of the restaurant food and i was having some bread with cottage cheese. Bummer!

There are very few things I wouldn’t do for a nap right about now…I am back in Shalimar again today just because. I don’t have anything from either of the perfumers for this week, so I may just enjoy my Shalimar all week.

NYC peeps, I’ll be there Saturday! I need suggestions! We obviously want to do the touristy stuff since none of us have ever been but if you have advice or suggestions, shoot them my way! Also, if you don’t want to comment here, you can always email me (my email can be found by clicking my gravatar).

The Frick is my fave NYC museum (former home of an industrialist–nice inner plant-filled atrium too). May be crazy on weekends; usually try to hit those kinds of places on a weekday. Also the Guggenheim, though when I was there in the fall the swirl portion of the bldg was closed, so we passed.
It’s smaller, but the Neue Galerie is cool, and the restaurants are fab (not inexpensive). Have a wonderful trip!

If you can, take a boat tour AROUND Manhattan Island. I did it back in either the late 1990’s, or the early 2000’s and enjoyed it very much. You get to ride past Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and get descriptions and a bit of history on all the bridges that you are going under.

Lovin’ a whole week celebrating sleep! A good nap can cure many ills…and ill tempers! 🙂

Today was a fresh/citrusy/spring scent day…..Wearing Penhaligon’s Orange Blossom Edt. I did have to reapply this afternoon, but it’s worth it to get that burst of fresh orange in the opening a 2nd time…

My scent of the evening is Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien EdP again. Perhaps light citrus will be a winner as far as not disturbing my folks. 🙂 Dad said he could smell the perfume, but he didn’t seem to have any allergic reaction to it. He said he’d let me know *right away* if a perfume I was wearing made him cough or sneeze or wheeze. Well, okay then. lol

Late to the party, but better late than never. Hello to all my NST fragrance friends! I should be able to be consistent this week since we started Spring Break today. I have a lot of catching up to do. Hope everyone is well.
My SOTD is Intense Café by Montale. I like this line a lot and its a nice change from my usual Jo Malone scents.
I’m curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on FragranceNet. Has anyone ever wondered why their fragrances are at discounted prices? I’m not complaining….I just wonder if its the real deal or am I better off buying from regular retail stores. Thoughts please?

I can also vouch for Fragrancenet! So far, everything that I have gotten from them has been the real deal. Quite a few of the perfumes are either discontinued, have had packaging changes (see L’Artisan), or are prior formulations to what is currently being sold in stores at retail.

I’ve had good experiences with them.
However, i have noticed with some designer perfume, that they have inflated the regular retail price, so then with their discount, it really isn’t much different in price. Every now and again, I notice it. The majority though, seems like correct pricing.

Believe it or not I’ve had no scent on all day. Just an indication of all the stress happening now. My mom has about six things physically wrong and has lost her insurance cared she. My aunt is here ostensibly to help but she keeps whining all about her own pains, losing things, our weather being too warm, etc. on top of this, my sink is backed up and I can’t do dishes or laundry unless the Drano works by later tonight. If it doesn’t I can expect a $$$ plumbing bill. Neither of them has ever had to take care of a house so it’s rough and I’m about to snap. Came in my bedroom with wine, cats, and iPad to de-stress. Thank you.

I heard on the news that Michigan is looking to do away with the time change. If that’s true, I am really going to be confused. Right now it’s the same time for me and you, but if I didn’t spring forward then sometimes we would be different times? Or always different times? Ugh… to much math, lol

Say it isn’t so. I remember Indianapolis did not do time changes and I went on a business trip with a number of people and we wondered why our ride from the airport to the company we were visiting did not show up! At least we were early instead of late!

The biggest confusion we have ever had from time zones was when we were in Pierre, SD a few years ago. Pierre is in the Central Time Zone, but Fort Pierre, which is across the Missouri River from Pierre is on Mountain Time. Both cities are quite small, and nowhere near any other towns, so why they drew the time zone demarcation between the two towns is a mystery to me.

Just got up from my post-work nap. I barely made it through the day, despite extra coffee. I even went to bed last night early enough to allow enough sleep, but my brain would not shut down. Add in sleep disruptions from hot flashes and my recent respiratory infections, and I didn’t have a chance today.

I’m late! SOTD = Rania J Ambre Loup

Fantastic spicy amber vanilla and what smells like tobacco but isn’t.

Another DST hater but it made for good light taking pics of the NYC skyline coming out of Starbucks. Today, I wrote one of those venemous emails where I started with manager x – you need to handle this situation. Your person lacks common courtesy, focus, blah blah and I am extremely disappointed at the lack of professionalism. I walked away, inadvertently had to deal with someone who couldn’t be bothered with figuring out the message on the printer (basically, add paper) and just walked away; when I asked her if she was done printing, she said yes but of course it was a big lie because when I added paper, her stuff printed. I was nice by walking the two batches over to her and parted with next time, just add paper. Back to my desk and I deleted the strong words I used and instead, asked the manager if person x was okay because I have not heard from her in over a week! I of course provided the sequence of communication which left no doubt as to the misbehavior.

Fast forward this evening I stopped by the mall to pick up something. I passed by Macy’s and saw an item I wanted and one thing led to another and I ended up with an Estée Lauder GWP plus a step up gift (which I had to remind the SA consisted of 2 items. After paying and walking away, I said self, look in the bag. Sure enough, the GWP I got was already ripped open and it was missing 1 of 5 items! I went back to the SA and pointed out this travesty and she reluctantly gave me a new one. The nerve! I was in a hurry so had no time to insist on speaking to a manager. I may still go back and do that this weekend because I am royally ?! I should check and make sure I did not get a used step up gift! I wouldn’t be surprised! Maybe it’s a full moon?

Anyway, with the CP, I could have sworn one of the Oliviers did Angel! Surely, 75% of NSTers have Angel? I fear for the ozone! ???

Angel was an immediate scrubber for me. I mentioned recently here that I had no plans to learn to love it. I like Iris Silver Mist and most of the other iris perfumes I’ve tried lately.

Although I’ve also mentioned here that a perfume that smelled like Nag Champa incense gave me a really nasty coughing fit, I’ve been doing fine with perfumes that have frankincense in them. I don’t understand it offhand. At home, I just have to work around who’s allergic to what, and who has other objections. I haven’t had a dermatological or respiratory allergic reaction to any of the samples I’ve tried so far. (*knock on wood*)

It makes me think of how some people like the taste of cilantro and some people think it tastes like soap. IDK
