Friday scent of the day 3/8

Posted by Robin on 8 March 2019 296 Comments

Happy International Women’s Day! (The 2019 theme: #BalanceforBetter. "The future is exciting. Let's build a gender-balanced world.") Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that honors the holiday in whatever way you like.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm reasonably gender-balanced, scent-wise at least, in Richard E Grant Jack Piccadilly '69, by perfumer Aliénor Massenet.

Reminder: 3/15 will be Olivier Friday...wear a fragrance by Olivier Cresp or Olivier Gillotin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other Olivier connection you can devise.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I chose No. 5 L’eau, to be connected to all of the women who have worn No. 5 and its flankers. This includes my favorite woman, my mom!

    Have a great Friday.

I thought about this one a lot. I chose Fracas (EDP and extrait) because of the Germaine Cellier connection. Even though what I’m wearing today is different from the fragrance she conceived all those years ago, when she had the courage to create what she wanted, I think it still carries enough of her character to suite today’s theme.
Because I also wanted to honour another bold and brave woman I added some Rubj extrait and voile d’extrait by Vero Kern. The combo works surprisingly well!

Maison Louis Marie No. 04 Bois de Balincourt because I had a craving for sandalwood. This one gets compared to Santal 33 quite a bit, but it reminds me more of Tam Dao. Of course I haven’t smelled the two side by side so if anyone else has, please chime in.
So happy that it is fully light out when I leave for work in the morning now!?

Like Austenfan, I’m wearing a bit of Fracas in the form of a body lotion I made a while back from an evaporating mini of the parfum mixed in to Shikai unscented borage body lotion. Still smells great! Honoring Germaine Cellier who was one of the rare female perfumers in a male-dominated field. Cheers for bravery and serious accomplishments in making some iconic perfumes!
Topped off with a bit of Nicolai’s Neroli Intense. Works well!

I considered wearing a Giacobetti but I opted for something that declares its gender in the name (and which I am happily wearing nonetheless, because gendering fragrances is stupid): vintage Montana Parfum d’Elle EDT (the one in the bottle that looks like a cell phone from the distant future), a spectacularly voluminous late-eighties floral chypre — sharp fruit on top (I could live without the melon but it fades quickly), thick resinous floral middle, and one of the most beautiful bases that was ever constructed, ambery vanilla and tobacco and lots of oakmoss. They certainly don’t make them like this any more.

Olivia Giacobetti – Hiris. I’ve only had horrible days when wearing this, so I pre-empted by having a horrible day and then spraying. I think it worked. My day calmed down and it’s raining now. I’m working the weekend, but my week was so eventful, I am just going to go with the flow. ENJOY your weekend, everybody who is off. And chin up to all the workers.

    Youth Dew.
    1) Estée Lauder built a huge fragrance and cosmetics company with perseverance, passion, pluck, and family.
    2) I can smell it despite ongoing virus symptoms.
    3) I will probably refrain from closed public spaces because of all of the above.

7 Virtues’ Noble Rose of Afghanistan from the splitmeet showed up yesterday, just in time to align with the CP, as a female-owned company with female perfumers. The mission statement on their website is all about empowerment, so I’m happy to finally try them out.

It’s a sweet summery pink kind of rose, the Mr likes it and says it reminds him of the lychee jelly snacks he ate as a kid in the Phillipines. Lychee isn’t listed in the notes but I do get the resemblance, though it’s more rosewatery than fruity. Then once it dries a bit, some clove peeks out, which is lovely. I’ve never said no to a pretty rose, so I do like it quite a bit, but I think I’ll get more use out of it when it gets warmer.

They’re like little jelly cups with a bit of fruit in the middle. They sell them by the bucket at our Asian market.

I’ve found them at Gong’s Market in Frazer (shopping center at the intersection of Routes 30 and 401) and at the Asian Market in the Marchwood Shopping Center north of Exton on Route 100. (Not sure if that’s Uwchlan, or Lionville…) Also I think they have them at the Himalayan Indian Grocery, also in Marchwood. Let me know if my mentions of those roads makes any sense to you, Robin. neyronrose at gmail dot com

Oh, the cross street for the Marchwood shopping center is Ship Road. (I tend to go north and east in the county more often than I go south and west.)

Consider me an enabler for anyone looking for lychee-flavored food and drinks. lol The mango jellies are very good, too, if you like mango. If you head up that way on a day that it’s not snowing, perhaps we could meet up at the Sephora in Exton.

            Anyway, have a good weekend!

Wearing Bat-Sheva from Judith Muller which was one of the first Sophia Grojsman compositions. So a perfume named after a woman, from a woman’s company and with a woman as the nose. Think I nailed this project.

Well, considering that I have a bunch of samples that I got off ebay and considering that the perfume was created before I was born, it smells pretty good. The top is a little sharp but the rest is this thick honeyed floral purring base. Probably with some real animalics.

    Hello All!

    1) Friday reports and must redo an ASSESSMENT on GDRP, plus make sure all of my data for my projects meet this requirement, as I may have connections with EU based companies. (plus I work for a company with branches in the EU)

    2) SOTD: Dovana (Sylvanie Delacourt) layered over Carol’s Daughter’s Buttercreme (Lisa Price)body butter, and I smell pretty awesome if I do say so myself. Carol’s Daughter was founded 20 odd years in Brooklyn in Lisa Price’s kitchen and was really part of using beautiful plant based ingredients for skin and hair that feel luxurious and perform well. SD was at Guerlain for an equally long time and start her own house. I thought both would be appropriate today.

I went with Jolie Madame again, for being both by a woman and having a woman in the name. Since I enjoyed my accidentally-generous application earlier this week, I went for it again today… and THEN lost control of the splash bottle, resulting in a double overdose. I love it even more. Maybe I have been too timid all along.

    Happy FriYAY Y’all!

(Small International Women’s Day VENT before I can move on…LOL) I think I was probably born in the wrong decade. While I’m proud to be a modern professional working woman, I definitely also feel some (justified) guilt for being away from home so many hours a week. Looking back over the last 18 years, I think my “balance” on a personal level would have been better served if I’d found a way to work part time at my career, with many more hours at home. At this point, it is what it is…I needed to work, and somehow I’m gettin’ it done. (Career that is…not necessarily the laundry on time!) 🙂 If I’m being completely honest, I’m most happy and myself when I’m being a mom and wife; if that’s old-fashioned, then I’m that too! LOL! Vent over….

I’m back in Prada Infusion d’Iris today….I’ve really been craving this one lately. Kudos to Daniela Andrier for creating several perfumes that I really love! (Wonder if she struggles with the work/life balance? LOL)

I had a hard time working full time — that was some years ago — but I get bored with myself if I’m not working. I worked as a home health aide much of last year, and really liked my clients, but got very burned out by not having days off, even though I wasn’t working eight hours a day. If there had been another home health aide who would reliably have been there a couple of days a week for those first few months, it would have been a lot better for me. When there finally was another home health aide (new agency), she ended up calling out a lot after about three weeks of working her scheduled days, and I was expected to come in. Apparently staffing issues are pretty common in the health care field.

A Bachelor’s degree in history didn’t actually qualify me for anything. I should have gone straight on to get a Master’s degree in Library Science. I still think working forty hours a week would have been a challenge in some aspects, but less so than having a certain amount of knowledge and certain abilities, but not having professional qualifications.

I learned to value myself as a person despite not working outside the home for a while, and without defining myself by a job. (Especially since the people I tried to explain it to either didn’t understand “copy editor” or didn’t understand “e-books.”)

I took pride in my work and cared even doing what some people would consider a “menial” job like the home health aide work. My clients appreciated that I cared about doing a good job, though.

But the work/life balance is tough for a lot of women, and working part time or taking time off can stall out a professional career, from what I understand. If one can afford to take the time off, that is. I respect those folks who work and raise children. I never could have done that! Any more critique, and I’ll get too political, but finding a good balance is definitely a challenge.

When we first moved to the US, right after 9/11, I had a tougher time than I thought I would have finding a job, and it was really hard to come to grips with that. Then the job I got was only ok and I was overqualified – I hated it when people asked me what I was doing for work back then. Now I like my job, but I get paid peanuts. So there’s always a trade-off, I guess, and I admire anyone who carves their own way no matter what it looks like.

I’ve been thinking of wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue for a couple weeks, so that’s what I chose for today. I think it’s my favorite of the IdIs. Back when I first had swapped for a bottle of IdI EDT on MakeupAlley, it didn’t feel like me. I invited one of my best friends to come over to sniff since she decided she needed a new signature scent. She fell for IdI and took my bottle home with her. It was her scent for years, and I loved smelling it on her. We live far from each other now and I don’t think she has been wearing perfume since she had her first child a few years ago, but I still think of her when I wear any of the IdIs. Daniela Andrier has really composed some amazing perfumes.

This is from a Luckyscent sample, and I really like it. My folks and I were running around today trying to get things done before it started snowing, but I wanted to quickly post what fragrance I was wearing for the day.

I mentioned late yesterday that I’d tried 7 Virtues Middle East Peace in the evening, also a citrus scent, and liked that one quite a lot as well.

Neither of those have seemed to make Dad cough and wheeze so far — *fingers crossed* — so I may have hit on winners that way, as well. 🙂

A last minute switch for the CP. Bird of Paradise by Avon. It was one of my mom’s favorites when she was an Avon Lady for a time back in my middle school years. (My scent was Somewhere). Some years before my Mom passed away, I found a bottle on eBay that I gave her in her birthday. She literally teared up, she was so happy.

Since it doesn’t last, I’ll be spritzing throughout the day.

What a wonderful tribute to your Mom.

I think it as my Mom’s Avon purchases when I was a kid is what got me hooked on perfumes so early. I had ‘Somewhere’ powder in a green shaker tin. It may have even been my first purchase that I was allowed to make (of course it was an add-on to my Mom’s order). I loved that the Avon ladies came to the house!

      What a great idea, LizzieB!
I’m fairly sure I’ve smelled Bird of Paradise because my mom had several Avon perfumes when I was a kid, and the name rings a bell. I really enjoyed playing with them, and now that I think about it, I imagine that was partly due to the fact that the bottles were small. …So thanks for reminding me of that fond memory!

Yes, that is a sweet story. My mother worked as an Avon lady when she was in her late teens and early twenties, if I am remembering right. When I got curious about makeup as a teen, she had all the little lipsticks I could try.

Last year, when I had a discussion with her about trying different perfumes, she gave me a bottle of Cotillion and a bottle of Persian Woods, both of which she had had in her dresser for quite some time. She was sorry a few hours later when the sprayer on the Persian Woods bottle got stuck in the spray position for two or three minutes. Those bottles are probably from the 1960s or 1970s.

I have just finished reading a wonderful new book about the way needlework and textiles have been used by women throughout history as a means of rendering ourselves visible, and forging personal and politicsl identity . The book is written by a Scottish author who has worked making banners and the style of writing crosses social and personal history in the way The Hare with the Amber Eyes did. I have been reading up on textiles recently and this is my favourite book. I had my novel accepted this week which is a weight off my mind and i am wearing Lupin and Patouchli ( a reward buy) and need to stop blind buying scents . Lupin has such a wonderful dense pollen/clover sweetness with a hint of clove and mint in the wild and this perfume is a insipid patouchli with maybe a very pale mimosa. Happy womens day to you and happy mow the lwans day to me.

I decided to do a series of five novels, each one based on one of the five senses. This one is based on scent ( and began life as essays on scent mapping my neighbourhood but then had a story line and characters added). The one I am about to begin is based on touch, and fabric conservation hence the research into needlework etc. The sound one will centre on bird calls….don’t know the rest yet. The scent one will come out in October.

I wore fragrances by female perfumers all week, but today I wore Parfums DelRae Bois de Paradis. Michel Roudnitska was the perfumer, but DelRae Roth collaborated and owns the company, so I’m claiming partial credit. Either way it’s a gorgeous fragrance.

It was super easy to participate in this CP (most of the week) as it turns out that I have many favorites by female perfumers–I just happened to forget this morning. Have a great FriYAY, all!

Winter Woods on my skin is not at all about woods or winter…I wear it in the summer because the ambery aspect of it smells like the best possible vanilla on my skin. Laurie and I have had conversations about how this plays out in unusual ways on my skin 🙂

Like many of you, I chose a female perfumer for today’s cp, but I wanted her to be one known internationally and I wanted my fragrance choice to have some relevance to that theme as well.

Sophia Grosjman was born in Belarus but moved to the US in 1965 and has been with International Flavors and Fragrances since 1966, receiving numerous prestigious awards for her lifetime dedication to creating beautiful fragrances. Two of hers are my very favorites, and I am lucky to still have some, vintage White Linen and vintage Trésor.

But I chose neither of them today, instead opting for Lagerfeld Sun Moon Stars. My hope is they shine brightly tonight on all women across the globe bringing a sense of peace and hope no matter how troubled the world. And the sweet and powdery composition, with its mélange of wonderful florals, reminds me that spring is definitely on the way!

What a wonderful sentiment, Laila! And you smell great! I still have a mini SMS bottle ‘round here that I should give some love to…

It’s the end of the day and I’m enjoying a little Frost from the hands of Diane St. Clair.
