Wednesday scent of the day 2/27

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2019 230 Comments

It's Hump Day, plus World NGO Day, Pokémon Day, International Polar Bear Day and Anosmia Awareness Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue.

Reminder: on 3/1, wear a fragrance by Floris, Fragonard or Frapin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter F.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Prada Spring 2019 campaign.

In Natori EdP for its beauty and coziness. Exactly what I need today, (thanks Flopper!)

I have to go to the laundromat, then to a doctor’s appointment, and it’s cold and the sun hasn’t been out in what feels like weeks, so, Shalimar it is, a big honking blast of vintage edt. The laundromat should tamp it down a bit before I head to the doctor.

Shalimar is just the thing to shake a body out of the winter doldrums. I hope your doctor’s appointment goes well. ?

Not feeling very anosmic in Calyx. Mine is the Prescriptives version. One of my most invigourating fragrances. It’s still in perfect condition, and as crisp now as it was when I first got it.

This was one of my very first fragrances back when I was a teenager – I wish I’d held onto the bottle! I recently re-smelled it at Ulta and either me or the juice has changed (or probably both).

I got mine in 2008/2009 and it smells different than the current Calyx. So I’m sure the juice must have changed considerably over the years. It still smells good, but it was a bit more garbagey and bitter than it is now.

NST friends, thank you so much for the compassion and support you’re shown me. I’m so grateful for this blog and everyone who participates in it.

I’m in 1885 Bains Sulfureux, from a sample given to me at Scentbar in LA. My goodness, that trip seems like a lifetime ago.

We are socked in with fog right now, waiting a bit before I head out to help work on dad’s house with my sisters. Our family was there for 50 years, so it’s going to take many weeks to sort everything out, maybe months.

We started going through things on Monday, and y’all, he left a visual joke for us to find! I won’t go into the details, but we all had a good laugh. He was thinking of us to the very end. ?

Last night I scrubbed Florabello off and went out in my Vintage Chloe to hear a talk about Camus, Proust and Flaubert. A french woman sitting next to me leaned in and told me how wonderful I smell and asked about the notes in my perfume. Very sweet

Today I am trying Eau Rose by Diptyque. I have some samples from this house and so far Eau Sens is the only one I have warmed up to. Thanks for all the other suggestions from yesterday.

Day 3 of Aroma M Geisha Vanilla Hinoki. Operation: Thunk Decant should be complete by the end of the week. Still enjoying the L’Occitane orange blossom shea balm I got last weekend.

I just received yet another wrong-number call to my work phone. WTH? I’ve gotten so many lately that I’m starting to let every call from outside my university go to voicemail instead of answering.

Are they mostly all looking for the same wrong person? It could be that a number could have been listed incorrectly in an ad or something, and it gave your number instead of the correct one. Maybe your number is close to that of a popular business? I once had a phone number that was just one digit off from the local Subway shop, so I got a lot of calls from people trying to order sandwiches.

If ALL the outside calls you are receiving are wrong numbers, it could be that the phone company is routing the calls incorrectly. One other time, I got a number of calls over a weekend from people trying to sign up for driving lessons (!). I couldn’t identify a driving school with a number even remotely close to mine, and I couldn’t get a hold of the phone company over the weekend (this was pre-internet days) to find out what was going on. On Monday, it just stopped. My mom called me Monday evening to say that she had tried to call me over the weekend and got somebody else’s number.

How bizarre! It doesn’t seem like they’re all looking for the same person/business, but they all sound equally confused after I answer the phone with the name of my library. Every phone number within my university has the same prefix, so my best guess is that they’re all trying to reach other people on campus.

I’m all wrapped up in Azuree. Re anosmia awareness, my sense of smell really did save me the other day when I left a pot on – much as I would miss perfume if I were anosmic, I’m sure I wouldn’t mind that at all compared to how often I would burn my house down.

I had a similar experience last night! Went to the kitchen to turn off the light before bedtime and smelled the gas – my husband had warmed something on low and the flame blew out. Scary.

On a better note, Azuree is a great perfume. It was a favorite aunt’s signature and always makes me think of her.

Yes, the sense of smell is actually much more important than most people realize. Without it, you couldn’t smell smoke, or a gas leak, or spoiled food.

That’s an interesting thought. Today the spoiled food problem isn’t a big issue because of refrigeration (at least in this country), but before refrigeration it would have been so very important to have your sense of smell before eating something.

I do know when she had her 1st baby, she had to keep checking for dirty diapers cuz she couldn’t tell by smell.

Not on theme with Ormonde Woman – I mailed off all the splits yesterday and it occurred to me that I can now use one of the travel sprays without confusing them. This is truly one of my all time favorites, I think (along with Amouage Dia and Ciel d’Opale, and both of those were samples from freebiemeets and kind Nst’ers – would have never tried these otherwise!). Happy Wednesday!

Wearing Floris Honey Oud, my only Floris. I love it, but I think it’s a little too strong for work. On me it’s a powdery balsamic woody gourmand of the non sweet variety. I’ve had my 5ml decant since its release in 2014 and it appears to have evaporated so that about 3.5ml remain. I’m glad I pulled it out from the box its been tucked away in! I remember getting a more straightforward honey note when I first tried it, so either it’s lost some of that with age or my nose is picking up on different aspects now. I’d definitely recommend it to those that like powdery woody gourmands.

I’m late to the party, but has anyone watched the latest season of True Detective? It’s a lot better than I expected given the lackluster second season. Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff are so good in it, and the old age makeup on Mahershala is insanely convincing. I’ve still got a few episodes to watch so no spoilers please! I prefer to binge this show rather than watch it week to week.

Yes! Just finished up this season of True Detective earlier in the week. I agree that the acting, the casting, and the makeup were all excellent, but I thought the plot was reeeeally slow to develop (I might have missed some important points while I was busy being confused by all the jumping around between timelines). I didn’t find the ending very satisfying either, but hopefully that’s just me.

Did you watch it week to week or binge it? I find that binging a show *usually* helps to make it not feel slow. I feel pretty good about the pacing so far, and I’m 5 episodes in.

Unpopular opinion, but I like season 3 more than the first one even. Ali and Dorff are so strong together, I prefer their characters’ messy dynamic over Matty and Woody. Carmen Ejogo has a lot more to do than the women of the first season, if I’m remembering it right.

I’m pretending Mahershala just won an Oscar for this instead of Driving Miss Daisy 2 :p

I’d like to rewatch season one in the near future because it feels like I watched it so long ago. I’m curious how it will live up to the high regard I hold for it.

I think the supporting cast is wonderful, mainly Carmen Ejogo and Scoot McNairy. Scoot was also in one of my favorite shows of recent years, Halt and Catch Fire.

Thanks. 🙂 I got a sample thanks to CobraRose’s generosity at the fall freebiemeet. Thank you, CobraRose! 🙂 That batch of samples included violet and iris scents, a couple of popular niche fragrances, and some classics from the earlier part of the 20th century. All very educational, and I found some fragrances I really like. 🙂

And thank you to the other folks who have sent freebiemeet samples (and those Lush solids from 50_Roses). I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to try them. Fun and educational. 🙂 I knew I liked several kinds of floral perfumes and citrus fragrances, but I wouldn’t have realized that I’d like perfumes with frankincense in them. I knew I liked sandalwood, but wouldn’t have realized I’d like other “woodsy” scents, too. I’ve learned a lot!

Rum Butter by Fortune Cookie Soap today.

    TMI, gross medical stuff ahead:

Looks like BF’s infection, if that’s what it is, is spreading to random areas in the form of little weeping bumps. Near the scratch, but also on the other arm, forehead, and behind his ear. The fluid is clear at least, but still concerning. One would think the antibiotics would at LEAST stop it from getting worse, right? He told me the doctor he saw seemed more concerned with getting him out the door and onto the next than much else. Might have disdiagnosed him entirely, who knows. Gonna try to get him to see someone else today.

Spent some of the morning cleaning up some clutter with the dry down of no 5 Eau Premire and enjoying a warm house. After Sunday’s wind storm, tons of places were without power until yesterday night. My place of work has a generator but the generator doesn’t keep the heat going, so I spent most of my shift freezing my butt off. Since I am about to take a shower, I am debating on LADDM or L’Heure de Nuit today. I will probably spend the rest of the day on debating on the STC flash sale.

I have the same issue with the Dior Prive line, some of which I love. I recall a long conversation at Saks (or somesuch) where I was trying to explain to the SA that I didn’t WANT a gargantuan bottle of any fragrance at this point in my life. She kept trying to persuade me of the “value.” I’m happy enough with the decants but really wish Dior sold reasonable sized and priced bottles of these…

So this is interesting, one of the pro-oxidant enzymes that our immune system uses to fight off invaders naturally has a greenish tint, so green snot by itself actually just shows that our bodies are doing their thing. Now rank snot is bad – if you’re having increased sinus pressure too, you may need an antibiotic. 🙁

Ah, okay, so green means that the body is trying to fight off an infection. Some years ago, I had a doctor who said it didn’t smell like I had a bacterial infection in my throat, so there was no point in giving me antibiotics. At the time, I was like, “What?” but apparently there is something to that.

I get a lot of sinus infections, so I’m familiar with the facial pain and headaches. At this point, if I say, “Ow. Ow. Ow,” when my GP touches those spots over my sinuses that rayleighblue specified and the glands in my neck, and I’m generally congested, fatigued, and feeling miserable, he’ll agree that it’s sinusitis.

There are certain medical things I’ve become rather inured to from familiarity, not only from my own health, but from working as a nursing aide. However, I was as grossed out as everyone else by that rat story the other day.

And a reminder: folks who haven’t gotten a flu shot yet, and don’t have a reason they can’t, it’s good to get one. And it’s also good to get a pneumonia shot. I don’t think anyone particularly *likes* getting shots, but preventing illness is good.

Its a small concept store / mix store.

There is a coffee corner (i tasted the coffee today and its seriously good!). She also wants to sell soup. And both the coffee and the soup will be available ‘to go’ as well.

And you can buy high quality toys, a small selection of womens clothing, candles, soap, books (childrens books, cook books, lifestyle) and jewelry.

Most of the stuff, drinks and food is organic/bio label/sustainably and/or locally made..well you get the idea. 😉

A little bit hipster meets boho, but the whole look and feel is very fresh (greens, whites and grey) and playful (she has ordered lots of plants and there will also be a small corner for kids to play in).

Its a bit of a gamble because its not in the big city but in a smaller town where the current retail offerings are old fashioned and cheap.

But its also a town where lots of young families move to when they leave bigger cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht (housing in both these cities is freakingly expensive, so lots of folks who expect or have children move to surrounding towns like this one)

Today in the rather rare Floris Stephanotis. This is a fancy white flower (well, stephanotis) scent, it has a fancy cosmetic cream vibe, a rather upscale Nivea, and I’m rather enjoying it and it’s on the right side of sweet. I don’t even know when it was discontinued, I bought blind as it was the price of a couple of samples, this is where living in the UK helps to buy Floris.

SOTD = Sultan Pasha Irisoir attar

So good – very cuddly with super creamy orris butter but also stings due to the spicy carnation!

It meets my Red Package challenge because the juice is a very deep reddish brown. One more day and it will be a good one!

I have the 8 sampler set which I brought on vacation with me to test but I never even opened the package and now, the package is MIA.

As to the RedOackage challenge, while I loose with the rules. I managed to stick close to the spirit of it. I also wore a different perfume each day!

Interesting that both SP and Fath went for carnation in their irises. I wonder if it has something to do with supply right now. Ormonde Jayne also highlighted carnation (I forget if it was absolute or what technical term) as one of the luxurious ingredients in Black Gold.

Wearing Heure exquise today, because it’s so comforting.
I made a difficult decision to hand my notice in at work on Friday, although I love the job, my boss is making my life really miserable. I feel so much better for deciding tho.

SOTD is l’Eau de coco by Cottoncake. A nice, green, not so sweet coconut scent. Fits the lovely springlike weather today!

Weather forecast is 1,5 weeks of rain. So I’ll be switching to some comfort scents….

Bracken Women today, so no points. But it was fitting for a very sunny spring day. Sadly i came down with the chills and laryngitis and had an extra long work day. Will stay at home tomorrow and maybe friday to recover.

SOTD is Reem Acra. Not sure why this doesn’t get more love. It’s a solid oriental with orange blossom leanings, and nicely spicy. If that weren’t enough, it’s in the bargain basement bin, and the bottle is elegant.

Olympic Orchids Golden Cattleya today. I have a little 15ml splash bottle of this golden nectar, which seems to always get lost behind the taller bottles. Yummy.

I would like to be one of my own cats. Sleep as much as I want, when I want, where I want (and never have insomnia), graze all day long from a plentiful supply of food, have two humans pamper me and spoil me rotten–that’s the life!

I have the little set of Fragonard Eaux Naturelles bottles and dabbed a bit of Oranger on today. It’s very nice and makes me think of spring, even though many large icicles still hang from my roof!

Fragonard “Desert” today. It’s supposed to be some kind of leather scent but on me it’s just short-lived soap. It is every bit as disappointing as when I first tried it back in 2016. TOMK and I were travelling around the South and South-west France and I picked up a set of 5 Fragonard minis in (I think) Avignon. I thought it would be a scent memory but each one was more insipid than the last.

Anyway, I’m re-trying 3 of them this week for the CP, so F is for Floris, Frapin – and also for Fragonard, Failure, Frightful, Flop…

I tried to find some “F” samples this morning but failed. F for Fail. So anyway, after a late morning Pilates session, I came home and sprayed myself with T-Rex (Zoologist). At first I was a little afraid of it because it does pack a punch, but now I absolutely love it and just plain find it beautiful, deep, luxurious, even calming. Huh. Took Mom to my orthopedist to get the 2nd of a series of three shots in her poor arthritic knee. This is the rooster-comb material shot, not a cortisone shot. Hope it might work. There is a lovely jewellery store in the medical building (This is Jewel Box in the Smith Tower in the Med Centre, if anyone else is in Houston–no affiliation), and I have sometimes stopped in there to gawk at things or as a little pick-me-up after visiting my orthopedist (so many times this past year I can’t count them). Anyway they were glad to see me and meet Mom, cleaned all of our jewellery we had on for free (how sparkly), and let us look at multiple items of great sparkly beauty. Might have to go back next time for some gorgeous earrings I was very tempted by. We’ll see. It’s a gray misty foggy day here. There was scarcely any view from the doctor’s office on the 26th floor, and it made me think today would not be a good day for flying.

Late again. Today I wore Superstitious. 2 sprays and it’s still going strong. I’m going to be looking into getting a travel spray since I love it so much. I’ve never purchased a FM, and am wondering if anyone can tell me where the best place to get one from. Are there any good deals to be found? Is it better to get a set? Since it lasts forever, I probably wouldn’t need a set, but wasn’t sure if you can mix and match them.

You used to be able to buy a set of three travel sprays, and mix and match. If you do decide to go that route, I wouldn’t mind a travel size of Dries Van Noten….just saying. Not trying to enable a purchase or anything…?

You can go for a single 10 ml. I’m pretty sure, I just got a single of Parfum de Therese. I’m not sure if all retailers do that, though.

I just tried Superstitious yesterday and it is very lovely.

Today a package arrived from RAOK that I won on Facebook Fragrance Friends! I received beautiful carded or boxed samples of Diptyque Eau Duelle, Fleur de Peau, Philosykos, Tam Dao and Trente-Quatre. Also included are samples of Cartier La Panthere, Gold Must de Cartier and Hermès Le Jardin de Monsier Li, Jour d’Hermes, and Galop d’Hermes! Thank you again Maureen! I live in a perfume desert so this is the only way I get to smell many of these lines.

So many great fragrances are being worn today!

Tonight i put on some Fragonard fleur d’oranger (from a solid that my sister got on a trip). I also sprayed on some Serge Fleurs d’oranger to compare. The Serge is definitely more complex, although both are a BWF!
