Monday scent of the day 2/25

Posted by Robin on 25 February 2019 233 Comments

Another week begins! It's also George Harrison's birthday and Peace Corps Week. What fragrance are you wearing?

We're getting a bit of sun, finally, and I'm celebrating in Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers.

Reminder: on 3/1, wear a fragrance by Floris, Fragonard or Frapin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter F.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No F’s for me today! After a spate of perfume purchases, I decided to empty one of my emptiest bottles this week. So I’m in Brin de Reglisse and loving it. I honestly don’t know if I’d buy another 100ml to replace it but I love the scent. Maybe I could downgrade to a travel spray.

    Have a great Monday!

It’s really heavenly. And since it’s so light I can wear something else after it fades.

I wouldn’t mind a travel size of this one. It’s such a different scent and doesn’t overpower. Smelling lovely!

I love Brin de Reglisse and totally agree about the staying power, but it’s so lovely while it lasts. I bought a travel size not to long ago and then decided I needed a bigger size, so if you want the travel spray email me at: dark magician grl ZERO (the numeral, not spelled out) at yahooligans dot com and it’s yours.

No Fs for me either – I only have Fendi and Frederic Malle, are neither is a small brand.
I am in Guerlain’s Herba Fresca, trying to get a boost of energy from it. I want spring – warm weather, green grass etc.

Samsara, edp from the cute 30ml bee bottle I got from fragrancenet this fall. I think I smell great, and got a complement from the husband.

I used up a sample of Purology volume shampoo & conditioner, its a soft pink color packaging. The shampoo had a very faint scent of a sort of chypre to me, and the condition a big white floral. These are expensive shampoos, and I have not purchased or used them before, but I thought the subdued power of very perfumey scents were interesting!

The wind downtown NYC today is frightening. Whether going against it, with it or someplace in-between, you are bound to be challenged and God help those that are under 110lbs. :/

I totally forgot about the lime or salt theme last week, when I’d been experimenting with lime essential oil the week before. I guess it just turned out to be a busy day.

I have a little sample of Floris London #89. I’ll try that on Friday, if I remember. If I’m remembering the weather report correctly, we may get snow, in which case I probably won’t leave the house.

Working on end-of-the-month chart reviews and other necessary pharmacy business in Elizabeth Arden White Tea. This scent puts me in “professional mode”, as much as that’s possible for me….. 🙂

If anyone is available to assist getting my 3 kids to the dentist, math tutoring, and a part time job all within a 90 minute time period this afternoon, give me a shoutout! I may need to reapply White Tea to survive today! 🙂 #MomLife #PharmacistLife #MomPharmacistCraziness

Good morning, friends! Partial credit today in Tom Ford F*ing Fabulous, which smells…pretty good. I know I have some Floris samples somewhere. I like a lot of their perfumes very much! But I never fell totally in love with any of them.

I’ve decided to torture myself during my no-buy by looking at the splitmeet page. Both Tiger’s Nest AND Hyde are up for splits, and I just have to sit on my hands and mope.

Ok, get ready to be very mildly proud of me: After much griping here about my job, I finally updated my resume this weekend and sent it somewhere!!! I don’t really have high hopes for it. I talked to a sales rep for a “molecular whiskey” company at a Science of Cocktails drinking/fundraising party (it was great!) a couple weeks ago, and he was just lovely. The company has no open scientist positions, but he suggested I send in my resume anyway to keep on file. It was just the kick I needed to polish up my resume and start thinking about looking for more viable possibilities. It’s just that my job is so fun when things are going well that I forget until things aren’t going well again.

        Thank you, sistine!

Glad you asked! Molecular whiskey is constructed from neutral spirits in a lab. High quality natural whiskey is analyzed for chemical composition, and then the various molecular species found in the natural whiskey are added into the neutral spirits. They say they can make the equivalent of like an 18-year-old whiskey in 18 hours in the lab or something (I am not 100 % sure, as I had already tried a couple of their drinks by this point). I think there are some legal issues with just calling it whiskey? So I believe the fine print reads “Spirits with whiskey flavoring” or something. They are also trying to do this with wine and some other spirit. It’s like the Impossible Foods of whiskey!

Scotch Whisky and Irish Whiskey have protected status…but without the geographic indicators, it’s way more open to different definitions.

Years back, I did some work for the Scotch Whisky Association. They must be having conniptions about this! The received wisdom about the taste of specific is so tied in to the terroir and the different aging processes and materials…but the molecular stuff sounds deeply intriguing!)

Oh how cool!!! I know nothing about the whiskey industry at all, but I do know I’m a huge fan of Scotch and a pretty big fan of Bourbon. The science behind “molecular whiskey” sounds great, and it’s something I’ve discussed with lab mates in the past. If this is something I do get into, you may find yourself the recipient of some questions, if you don’t mind 🙂 Thanks for your kind wishes!

I am coincidentally prepared for partial credit this week because I just received my three samples from fūm. I’m trying the Neroli one this morning. All three are surprisingly potent. After initial testing, I think I prefer Winter Crocus of the three.

Wearing Winter Crocus by Fum. I will wear each of the Fum perfumes this week. Winter Crocus is well done but it’s like not love for me.

In about an hour, I’m heading out into the neighborhood around my office to do adopt-a-street cleanup. It’s chilly but sunny so hopefully I can stay warm.

Last night my boyfriend and I went out to a nice restaurant for our 13 year anniversary. We ate the most delicious roasted squash dish, seared duck breast, and smoked steelhead trout. I wore Aftelier Honey Blossom for something light that wouldn’t overwhelm the food.

I have samples of Floris and Fragonard scents, but frankly I don’t know if I can be bothered to do it this week. Maybe just Friday.

It is extremely blusterous here in SW VA. It is also Trash Pickup Day, so I’m hoping none of our cans gets blown across the road and destroyed . . . the pickup location is half a mile from the house, at the main road, and I can’t get the cans in the back of the vehicle I’m driving today so there’s no point in going down there to get the cans now. (Rural life. Sucks sometimes.)

BUT! I am cozy in Memoir Woman today and not sorry about it.

No F’s in my collection, so instead I’m embarking on a Thunk Mission this week with my almost-gone decant of Aroma M Geisha Vanilla Hinoki.

I got a surprise ebay coupon this weekend, so I broke my usual don’t-pay-for-samples rule by ordering a sample of Caron Pour Un Homme, which I’ve been wanting to try for a long time. Can’t wait!

    SOTD = Penhaligon’s Clandestine Clara

Rummy amber vanilla, cozy and office safe. It is not boozy enough to make anyone think you’ve imbibed in the hard stuff! I am now OVER the kitschy Portraits series. When a new one comes out (and they seem to come in threes), I’m too bored to even bother yawning.

    Dining Woes
There was a restaurant that opened near the office and I like the food and ambiance even though it is a little pricey. I always go early for lunch; otherwise there’s a wait. Today was no different except I barely started eating my lunch and one of the servers put the check in front of me, apologetically saying that I can pay whenever. I put my utensils down, looked at him and said you usually wait until after I’m finished. He knew I was offended and said he will bring it back when I’m done. Sure, do that and I will pay when I’m ready. Guess what, whereas I usually leave as soon as I am done, I am taking my sweet time regardless of how many people are waiting. The server came back and apologized. Let’s see how they do next time.

My pet peeve is when the server asks if we want dessert-as we’re taking the second or third bite of our entrees. How can I know whether I want dessert until I see how much room I have left? Besides, if I order it so early, it inevitably gets brought out long before I am ready for it, so I get to watch ice cream melting, or hot pie or cobbler getting cold.

Ack, you don’t do that to a good regular customer! Not unless they ask for the bill early so they can make a speedy exit when ready. I guess the real test now will be if they remember their misjudgment, and don’t repeat it. (Fingers crossed that it remains as a pleasant place for your lunch.)

I wish Penhaligon’s hadn’t turned to novelty scents.

I do wonder if the server was “encouraged” by a manager to leave the check early. If you like the food/ambiance enough to go back in spite of today’s experience, perhaps a word to management would be in order.

Gah! I would also be VERY offended by the server plonking down the check so early. That could easily put a restaurant on the “Do NOT ever go back!!” list. And yes, I have a couple of establishments on said list.

In an ice storm a couple of years ago, our heating system went to emergency power and was running constantly for a day or so. We got an HVAC repairman in to see what was wrong. Turned out that the outside vents were covered in ice, and once that was cleared off, the heat went back to the usual. I don’t know if that would have anything to do with your furnace issues, but I also hope that your furnace hangs in there.

Feels like autumn. It was 5 degrees when I got up yesterday, a crystal clear morning and not a breath of wind. Over in the graveyard ( which is really a cemetery as there is no church attached ) the rosehips are bursting with colour, from yelow, orange , red, through to black. Most of the graves have psalms or ‘ sleeping with Jesus ‘ on them but there is one very big grave, a shrouded cenotaph on the side of the main path that just has the word “Waiting” etched into it. Every time I get close to it I wonder if today is the day? I keep imagining a stream of jagged, blue electricity powering up from its peak…so far only rabbits nibbling on the grass nearby .
F for fiele Myrrh. Waiting for the sunrise then off to explore up on the hill.

    1) Picked this weekend to go to LA. Loved being with my friends and the mini School of Life conference; hated hated HATED the Academy Awards traffic jams, all the Journo-trash taking all the seats at MY FAVE CAFES, and every beauty service place I haunted was BOOKED, because of course it was!

    2) Am in Fresh Cream Warm Suede topped off with a spritz of Boucheron. I smell super cozy; appropiate due to the snowy weather we have in Portland.

I’m in Lubin Epidor from a splitmeet a while back. A beautiful floral that amazingly smells wonderful to my anti- flower nose!

Snowing here a bit, nothing too exciting, but in the surrounding hills and mountains, they may be getting a good hefty dump. In the process of making a scorching cuppa coffee and warming up a bran muffin.

Oh, and if anyone knows anything about towns in Washington, I wouldn’t mind your opinion of Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Tacoma, and Ellensburg. Thanks!

I personally liked Tacoma when I passed through the area back in 2010. Granted I was there for a short visit and wasn’t looking for info such as what the rents are, crime rates, etc. But what I saw from the highway was positive.

Thanks! I’m doing a bit of research re: property and violent crime rates and finding the most towns/cities in Washington have a much higher rate than I thought. Also higher than the national average. I expected this from Seattle, but not surrounding smaller towns. ?

Some of the smaller towns are economically depressed due to the downturn/contraction of the lumber industry out there. So that’s probably part of the issue.

SOTD Mona di Orio Santal Nabatea, which I can barely smell, but I like it. I think I’ll save the rest of this sample for warmer weather when it doesn’t get squashed.
I stayed up to watch the Oscars, but they kind of bored me this year. Mostly, I was hoping to see Yalitza Aparicio of Roma win best actress, but, alas, she did not ? It would have made my heart happy to have a non-actress win (I also thought she did an amazing job)…

After work i met my new employer to sign my contract. So tomorrow i will send my resign notice to my bosses. Hope they will be well behaved and good sports

A generous dose of my precious vintage Bandit parfum today. (I only had only a micro mini to start with…but, I just bought some more on evilbay. A bottle of I have been stalking and pining for through multiple re-listings by a seller I trust. But no guilt: I promised this to myself as a reward for putting in a good attempt at the bench press championships this weekend. Hurrah!)

And this evening, a post-swim and sauna top up with Dryad, to celebrate the outbreak of narcissus and daffodil brightness that is suddenly, gloriously everywhere.

I stepped into my boot this afternoon and felt a soft little lump. Tipped the boot over and a dead rat fell out. (Welcome to Vermont)Smelled terrible so after I cleaned everything I went out (in backup boots) and picked up an industrial strength Olibanam and spruce diffuser to place in the CSI site. So icky. It was inside the apartment so I will have to get some humane traps. And next time I will check my boots before putting feet in.

I will need to consult my spreadsheet for the CP; today I went for a neglected perfume – Songes. I get the pencil shavings thing at the top of this and that has put me off in the past. Today I quite liked it. Had to spray very carefully – white florals are not very school-friendly for me. I was successful… I could get tiny whiffs throughout the day but not enough to blast anyone else.

Excellent theory. I’m 100 % in agreement, except our house likes to turn the screw and will give us whole YEARS of constant renovations, burst pipes, floor tiles inexplicably buckling… The list goes on. My husband would have sold it years ago if the garden wasn’t giving me such pleasure. He knows that he is saved many a rant, as I go into the garden and weed VICIOUSLY or dig beds or actually, mostly just wander around and potter until I feel better.

Late to the party, but the past several days have been very stressful. As some of you may know, if you read my posts a few days ago, last Wednesday my 88-year-old father fell and hit his head and had to go to the ER. It got worse, as they discovered he not only had a subdural hematoma, but several fractures as well. He was transferred from our local hospital to one of the hospitals in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. I am thankful that Houston has some of the best hospitals in the country, although it is rather hectic to get from here to there, what with all the road construction making the normally nerve-wracking traffic woes even worse.

Initially, they were hopeful that he would be released Monday (today) or Tuesday, but then on Friday night and Saturday morning his condition deteriorated–he developed pneumonia, his blood pressure and heart rate were dangerously low, and in addition to the feeding tube that had been put in the previous day, he had to be put on oxygen and some rather brutal drugs to get his blood pressure up. and the family was asked by one of his doctors to assemble at the hospital for a meeting to decide on what measures would or would not be administered if his condition became even worse (e.g., would we want him to receive CPR if his heart stopped?) The doctor whom we met with was not very optimistic about his chances of recovery in view of the seriousness of his condition, his age and baseline health, and so on. Mind you, he did say there was hope, but I think we all discerned that it was very serious indeed.

Friday evening we had been given a (rather short) list of skilled nursing facilities (SNRs) in the area to choose from for him in the event that he was released from the hospital but was still not able to return to his assisted living facility. Mind you, I had to practically pry the information out of the social worker. I had asked several times about the timeline for his release, what sort of facility he would need when he was released, and so on. Everybody I spoke to gave me some line about “Oh, there’s plenty of time for that later.” of “Just take it one step at a time.” She did not even contact me personally until I had asked for her to do so several times. I had planned to visit several of the facilities over the weekend, but with the change in his condition and the necessity of a family meeting and preparing ourselves for the very real possibility that we might be saying our final goodbyes. Needless to say, none of us toured any SNFs on Saturday. To add a final complication, yesterday I realized that I have contracted a nasty respiratory infection. I think it is just a cold, but it is pretty intense–I can barely talk at all–and somehow I don’t think it is a very wise idea to visit facilities full of frail elderly people when I am contagious. It’s not even as if I can hide my illness–I look and sound sick, and any facility that would let me go through it when I am so obviously unwell with an infectious illness is not one I would want to choose.

Yesterday we were informed that his condition has improved and he may be moved out of the ICU within the next day or so. I don’t have an overall timeline, however, and I really don’t know how it can be anticipated. Anyway, today two different social workers contacted me to ask if we had chosen a facility for him (!). Uh, no, we have not. We were given to expect that it would very likely be unnecessary, and in any case we were all at the hospital having a family meeting and visiting him (2 at a time–the limit) in case it was our last chance to do so. Although he has been doing better since Sunday, he is still in the ICU, and I hardly think they can discharge him just yet.

While I am very impressed with the level of medical care he has received, I am not so impressed with the level of communication that has taken place. More than once we have been told that they did not have our contact information, even though I gave them my name and phone number (to several different people) as well as my brother’s. After being told that there would be “ample time” to select a SNF, and having to practically beg for a list of facilities (when were they planning to share this information, anyway?), suddenly we are supposed to have chosen one already. The social workers were not even aware that he had become critical over the weekend. Information has come only in tiny bits and pieces–one little morsel from this person, another from this other person, and nothing at all from some others. Any information offered has come only after much pleading and prodding; next to nothing has been offered voluntarily.

I’m sorry if this post is overlong, but I am really completely stressed out right now and needed to vent a bit. If any NSTers with experience in the medical field can make any useful suggestions as to what to do, I would appreciate it.

I am not in the medical field but do have experience with family members in the hospital like this. My advice is to spend as much time with your dad as possible. 50_Roses, I am so sorry to hear of this situation with your dad — and with your own health, too; what an unfortunate time to be ill yourself. I’m also sorry to say to that it doesn’t seem unlike what we went through with my mom back in 2017. I do think that you can push back on a release from hospital until you or other family members have had time to visit and make a decision on a SNF (that’s challenging in itself), but I hope others may be able to offer you more and better suggestions on how to deal with social workers / care planners, etc., who won’t (maybe can’t?) give you straight answers.

Oh dear, Roses, I’m so sorry to hear this. From my own experience at Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center this summer, I agree with you—great media cal care, but many lapses and poor communication on the social work front. I do think that being there over a weekend complicates the communication tenfold because staff go home and even if someone is trying to be in touch with care facilities they don’t get calls back. That’s why I ended up spending six days in the hospital after my hip surgery last summer. One of my colleagues’ wife was in The Gardens of Bellaire and I visited there, and it seemed good. She had terminal cancer and I believe they had made a careful choice, though this was a while back. I am just mentioning it as a possibility you might look into it. My best wishes. This is scary and frustrating, but it seems good he has rallied.
