Friday scent of the day 2/8

Posted by Robin on 8 February 2019 244 Comments

Friday, and Opera Day. Our community project for today is Fire and Ice...wear something that keeps you warm in winter (Fire) OR wear something that reminds you of snow and chilly winter air (Ice). Thanks go to Glannys for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: on vacation, day 1. It will be mostly a travel day, and I am commando. (But if I was home, I'd be doing ice in The Different Company De Bachmakov.) With any luck I will check in later tonight after a rum punch on the beach.

Reminder: on 2/15, wear a natural perfume, if you have one. Suggested by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Cristalle today. It doesn’t really remind me of winter, but it is surprisingly lovely in cold weather. We’re supposed to get snow tonight and through the weekend, and I will likely be wearing something warmer, perfumewise – Cuir Ottoman, or Gucci EDP, or Feu Secret … or maybe I’ll dig out my tiny sample of Chergui. Who knows? Happy Friday everyone. 🙂

I wore Cristalle only in the winter in the 1970s. I always viewed it as a winter fragrance because the vintage was chock full of oakmoss which gave it incredible depth.

I’m really disappointed by the company Pacifica has become. They made so many unique, beautiful scents and offered them as perfumes, body products, candles and reed diffusers. Spanish Amber is my favourite. I used to love the Thai Lemongrass one as well… California Star Jasmine and Egyptian Bergamot Rose… 🙁

I completely agree! They discontinued about 15-20 beautiful fragrances and I don’t know why as I know there were many perfumistas who loved them …. I also miss their candles (so affordable and so beautiful) and reed diffusers as well……I stocked up on the solid perfumes because they discontinued them too….and yes, I also loved Egyptian Bergamot Rose as well as Avalon Juniper, Nerola Orange Blossom, Tunesian Jasmine, Bali Lime Papaya, Brazilian Mango Grapefruit, Med Fig, Spanish Amber, Mexican Cocoa…..ugh, I could go on and on!

and I looked up a few of them to see availability online..would you believe that Med Fig is selling for 78 dollars on amazon! I paid 15 dollars for it at my local health food store back in the day!

That is crazy! I have some real oldies stashed away from waaaaay back…. Vietnamese Ylang Ylang French Lavender, Pacific Red Ginger, Wild English Clary Sage, and Morrocan Chamomile Apple Blossom. They are all amazing! There were a lot more discontinued years ago that people may have never heard of. I think I tried Madagascar Spice but not Carribean Sugar Pumpkin. Oh and Marzipan from their Christmas scents! 😉 Speaking of candles and incense, Banana Republic also had a great line about 20+ years ago. Green Vine, Boxwood, Beach House, Napa, Nightime were some of the scent names – there were about 10 or 12. I still have a half burned Napa candle that is such a gorgeous scent. Anybody remember them? I think Beach House stuck around for a while. The most authentic beach scent I thought.

Started my day with Mary Greenwell’s Fire (to be honest, in name only). Post shower, I’ve switched it out for Serge Luten’s Bapteme du Feu, which may well turn out to be my bargain find of the year – double discounted in TK Maxx to £21. Yeah, you can stick your ridiculous, exorbitant new pricing Serge/Shiseido…

Hello all, I’m in the original versace which smells of hyacinths and pears so very much on the winter/spring border. I am a lover of spicy oriental scents so usually if be on the fire side of this but I felt like a change.

Actually I would love to be wearing lamp black by a roaring fire but instead my baby and I are watching the rain -which is still lovely and cosy.

Tiffanie, if you have any e.o.s around the house you can make it yourself. I spray some EdM in a 3 or 5 ml decant and then just add a few drops of any e.o. of my choosing. Normally I can’t smell EdM on my skin so the e.o. amps it up and also allows me to enjoy the e.o. in sprayable format.

You smell lovely. I have been wearing Mohur extrait a lot lately (another one I was on the fence about for years, until it finally “clicked” and then it was pure love). It’s supposed to be a limited edition perfume. I wonder if that is true, or if she will continue to make it.
And, speaking of roses, I have been meaning to ask you (since I know you are a tea lover) if you have any recommendations for a good rose flavored tea (black or green, although I think black is a more traditional match). I am very fond of Fortnum and Mason’s Rose Pouchong but it is not available in the US and I have exhausted my stash.
      Have a nice weekend!

That is a tough one to answer. The rose flavoured tea I have at the moment is bought at a shop in Bruxelles that doesn’t sell online. (it’s a rose scented oolong).
Damman Frères used to do a great rose scented green tea, alas discontinued. I also remember drinking a Marriage Frères Darjeeling that had rose in it. I think it was called Darjeeling Rose Camélia.
        https://www.mariagefreres.com/FR/2-darjeeling-rose-camelia-darjeeling-sftgfop1-T1268.html
MF Lune Rouge is nice as well. It’s a green tea with rose and ginger.
More of a floral fruity blend with a strong rose accent is Palais des Thés Thé du Hammam.
Another option would be to get a good quality rose water and add a dash to your tea of choice.

        https://boisdejasmin.com/2013/02/10-ways-to-use-rosewater-perfume-beauty-food.html

If you don’t mind me butting in, I have a couple of US-based recommendations for rose tea. The first one is a black tea sold by Tea & Absinthe (based in the NYC area but not sure if they have a physical storefront):
        https://www.teaandabsinthe.com/black-tea/rose-marzipan

The second is also a black tea sold by Capital Teas (used to be in the Annapolis, MD area):
        https://www.capitalteas.com/Royal-Wedding-Commemorative-Tea-p/2041.htm

Caveat: it has been a while since I have had the Royal Wedding Black tea at Capital Teas. When I had it last, it was lovely.

Habanita is SO beautiful, and even recent reformulations haven’t, as is so often the case, altered it beyond recognition. I bought a modern bottle a couple of years ago and it might not be as good as vintage but it’s miles above most other things on the market.

Couldn’t resist playing with the theme for today, so I’m wearing Revlon Fire & Ice cologne 🙂 The creamy amber and orange are working nicely to counteract the cold snap we’re having today in the Mid-South. Enjoy your vacation, Robin!

I had no idea it was Opera Day. Will listen to one of my favorite recordings later to celebrate. Probably some Richard Strauss. Inspired by yesterday’s scarf igloo, I’m wearing 24, Faubourg, which isn’t fiery, but definitely warmish? Not sure, I wear it year round.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your kind words for Mayhem yesterday. We had a long end-of-life conversation last night (me and my boyfriend, not me and the cat, though he was present for much of it), and I think we have a good plan of attack. I also appreciated all of your wisdom and experience, since these are the first pets either of us has ever had. We’ll have a home-visit vet come by on Saturday to meet him and get to know him while he’s still relatively healthy, and then call her back when it’s time to say good-bye. Still many tears, but we don’t feel as lost and hopeless anymore. In other cancer news, my father goes in for his second set of chemo days on Monday. Come on, 2019, be better.

Thank you, LizzieB. I read something a vet or nurse once said, something like, “Always stay in the room with your pet when they’re put down; they look for you.” I’ve certainly taken that to heart and will hold my baby when it’s time.

I’m sorry for your loss, too <3

This is so true. When I was a (very) young adult, I had to unexpectedly put my very first cat down. I was so traumatized that I just left him at the vet. My failure to stay with him has always haunted me and I vowed never to do that again. Although it’s painful, it is also peaceful and comforting and, actually, spiritually healing, to be with a loved pet and help them cross over the Rainbow Bridge. My very best to you.

After her diagnosis of a brain tumour beyond help, we brought her home for a few days. I was worried I was bring selfish, trying to hang on. But it was a very special few days, full of love, and then it was clear she was ready. I’m not sure we were, but she was. It was a hard goodbye, but I think we did the right thing by her. So, love and strength to you and yours.

I’m wearing Amouage Beach Hut Woman, which despite the dumb name and the cheerful gold bottle, smells smoky, woody, and has a strong minerality. It smells just like a campfire on the beach in winter. Or, at least in late fall or early spring. It’s both fire and ice!

Testing oud samples again, this one is Ensar Oud Cambodia 2010, which they’ve named Bliss du Boche. I liked yesterday’s Aceh 2016, Aceh Candan, better. They also have a new sandalwood, Kupang 1998, that I may need more of.

I prefer the scent of burning oud incense to that of the extracted oil, but you need to devote full attention to it for 15 to 30 minutes, and then it’s done. That’s great for meditation, but otherwise it’s more convenient to dab on an oil when I’m reading and take a sniff from time to time.

I wallowed in oud samples last summer and felt these tropical essences were great in the heat and humidity. Then I gravitated back to perfume in the fall. Now I’m pulled back to oud because the bone dry winter air is sucking the life out of my perfumes!

L’Artisan website mentions chili pepper in the description, and this is how this perfume smells to me – spicy with a vegetable-like freshness.

I imagine that a chili pepper smells like this if you cut or crush it. Initially I was dissapointed by it, because I expected a spicy hot chocolate scent, but then I grew to like this fresh, almost juicy spiciness. Nothing sweet, nothing like chocolate (to me at least). Raw chili pepper. A winter tonic!

I grabbed my Shalimar extract as I had to be quick this morning. The roofers are back thumping around to do some work they missed on several units (like the vents on the back). I didn’t want to look through my window only to be staring back at someone on my roof.

So I’m partially on track with this as it will become smoky in the dry down.

    Enjoy your vacation Robin!

I was thinking of LADDM or Shalimar. LADDM wasn’t really calling to me and Shalimar isn’t really work safe. So I am wearing Lonestar Memories instead. Jake, my dog, is feeling much better. We think that he ate something in the yard that really didn’t agree with him. We live in a rural area and out yard is partially wooded so it could have been anything.

I think there are three in my handbag right now–Alchemy, Lush Sun, and the remainder of a sample vial of Ibitira from the other day. I did have Flower Child in there, but I thunked it the other day. I try to keep 2 or 3 small bottles or vials of perfume in my bag.

I would love to kick this cold to the curb. I really feel OK, but my sniffer is somewhat off right now.

The temperature dropped 44F overnight with a howling north wind, just got back from a Dr’s appointment and it’s freezing outside! It was like early spring yesterday.
Wearing my dear old favorite Black Cashmere today, over Stash lotion and hair mist. Honestly, I think the wind peeled the scent off me, going to put on LADDM next. Even my scarf just smells like fresh air. Enjoy your weekend everyone 🙂

BY 44F. Like 55F on Thursday to 9F Friday morning, is that 44F? Or more? Anyway really cold! The kind of cold I associate with Montana? Or Canada? Not with northern Indiana, boo.

SOTD = Solstice Scents Estate Vetiver

This might as well be called Estate Patchouli. This is a warming scent. Solstice Scents is so underrated, y’all really should check out this brand.

Looking forward to reading others’ picks.

And how does this meet my Red Package challenge, you ask? The label and box have reddish brown spots to mimic natural flaws in parchment paper look.

Finally decided to wear Bulgari Black for work, which works fine with the Fire theme.
Got a package from Rogue Perfumery with my bottle of Chypre Siam today. I am totally pleased with my blind buy! Reminds me a bit of EL Private Collection, but with jasmine and ylang.
Got stressed a lot at work, as the chiefs decided to put my colleague on extended vacation, because they think its his fault, that our receptionists quit the job like mad. They would stay if the chiefs would pay them better, but they don’t want to hear that. So they blame him, and i am left with the work and some collegues have to come from afar and help me out. I think i will hate the next weeks at work…
De-stressed with the boyfriend and went to a nearby Italian restaurant, which we never tried and had some nice pizza, wine and some panna cotta and tiramisu.

Today’s cp inspired me to pull out a fragrance I haven’t worn in a long, long time. It was possibly the first fragrance I purchased having read about it on the various perfume-related websites I had started reading, as it was popular back then although I was not familiar with it.

According to the back of the box, Revlon Fire & Ice is: “A sensual blend of sheer florals, warm musk and vanilla.”. “Play with fire, skate on thin ice” is its trademark phrase. Fragrantica lists a myriad of notes, including citrus topnotes (providing cool, refreshing ‘ice?’) and incense and amber base notes (warm ‘fire’ at the bottom). On me, it’s a warm vanilla/amber, and although not listed as a note, I get a hint of cherry that sweetens it up (as some reviewers have noted). It’s a perfect scent for another blustery day with windchills in the negative teens.

Robin, have a wonderful vacation! I hope Grenada is still as lush and green as I remember it from a trip there years ago. Wishing the rest of us for whom a trip to the beach is still months away yet a wonderful weekend ahead!

In Angel Muse after deciding that yes, I do want to keep the bottle after all (my TJ Maxx find from yesterday). My other choice would have been Shalimar from the freebiemeet – to me, that’s a work safe scent, seems to melt into my skin, but I know others have a different reaction. My 11 year old says Shalimar smells like “clean diapers”. Hmm. Back to Angel Muse – just fun to wear! Perhaps more fire than ice.
    Robin, enjoy that rum cocktail!

I finished the Memoir Woman sample this morning, which I guess is more warm than cool (even if it doesn’t actually meet the fire or ice threshold).

Robin, after a rum punch (or two) on the beach, I hope the blog will be the _last_ thing on your mind! 😀 Enjoy yourself!

second wearing of vintage Houbigant le Parfum Ideal and I love it…had a friend at work smell it and she said it’s “me”….powdery, soft and ladylike (I will take that compliment!)
Got home and sprayed Casablanca because it’s just gorgeous (and PSA St Clair Scent is having a Valentines sale 10 percent off code LOVE10)

also, tested my new amalgamation of Eau de Mervielles in a 5ml decant with a few drops of sandalwood oil…I have been experimenting all week with various e.o.s added to 5ml of EdM..thus far lavender, neroli, frankincense and sandalwood all separately have all smelled really good…will test jasmine, patchouli, rose and immortelle later on.

Super late check in. Haven’t even read comments yet. Seattle is in the beginning stages of a snowpocalypse, so it’s been an interesting morning. Started the day at the office and left to work from home at 12 and miraculously made it home and parked just as it started snowing. Apparently everyone tried to leave downtown at the same time an hour ago and everything was gridlocked. 2 hours currently to get to neighboring city north of here that is 30 miles away.

Copying Oakland Fresca from yesterday and wearing Naomi Goodsir Bois d’Ascese for my smoky, woody fire scent. May reapply soon since I’m at home and can smell as strongly as I want!
