Wednesday scent of the day 2/6

Posted by Robin on 6 February 2019 285 Comments

Hump Day, plus Waitangi Day, Bob Marley's birthday and Frozen Yogurt Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada Candy, which doesn't quite call to mind fire, but is indeed keeping me warm today.

Reminder: on 2/8 our theme is Fire and Ice...wear something that keeps you warm in winter (Fire) OR wear something that reminds you of snow and chilly winter air (Ice). Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I suppose I’m more in the ice category today. I’m wearing the classic and lovely Fleur de fleurs by Nina Ricci. The aldehydes in the top could cover the ice part.
I’m trying to imagine some Bob Marley music, to keep warm.

Hard to believe Bob Marley was born in 1945. Time flies.

    Good Morning..
I don’t want to make ya’ll jealous, but my father in law is visiting and made me his chai tea. I am sipping it and flipping through the WSJ.

Today I am vintage Lagerfeld’s Chloe that I bought for a song and a dance at my little antique shop. I just put a little dab with that beautiful stopper and I am transformed into this elegant woman 😉 They have a lot of cute stuff in that store but if you love costume jewelry, gizmos and trinkets, its my favorite place to shop if you are in NYC. I also love the smell of antique shops..I know I am bizarre..but I am talking to a bunch of fume heads so you get me.

Yes, we get the paper delivered everyday.
What I love most about the WSJ in the side column, you can scroll down the list and take in everything that is happening in little blurbs.

This is probably not something that people notice, but I appreciate the black and white portraits of the authors they add next to his or her columns. I love art, so I really enjoy that they still do that. I read the WSJ to add balance to my New Yorker magazine 😉

It all sounds very zen, and yes to the little portraits! About a million years ago I used to go through the WSJ business section every morning for a former boss. Mostly I was looking for work-related items (pension law — ooh, exciting), but he was from New York and occasionally I’d find something non-business that I thought would interest him. It was a nice way to start the day.

My elderly mother gets the WSJ, NYT and a local newspaper delivered daily, a life long habit, and while I enjoy a real newspaper the recycling situation can be overwhelming.
Also your antique shop sounds marvelous! Browsing through places like that is one of my favorite pastimes.

I have the EDP, purchased this fall, and I prefer it because it’s warm and smooth on me. The EDT I find too scratchy/cedary, but it smells wonderful on my best friend. The EDP was not so great on her. So maybe we just have opposite chemistry, but this is one where I really valued testing.

I tinkered with Yves Rocher and added a clean orange blossom note (oranger crystals), civet, cashmeran, vanillin and a leather note (Suederal).

Highly incompetently I added the crystalline ingredients without diluting them, so the orange blossom is really center stage.

Smells a lot nicer than I expected.

I’m in AP Tea for Two today, again from the very generous therabbitsflower! This is better than pretty much any Tea for Two you’ve smelled. For starters, the bottle that the decant came from appears to be “vintage,” from the 2000s, so it probably started out richer than the current formulation. And then, the decant is in a leaky dropper bottle, so by now, as trf says, it’s probably something like extrait concentration. You’ve never smelled such spicy, honeyed tobacco! This stuff is spectacular. I didn’t think I’d like the dropper bottle, but now I think every extrait should come in a dropper bottle.

Time for a little #fwp rant (I mean…most of my problems are fwp, thankfully): the last time I ran out of coffee beans, I asked my boyfriend to pick some up on his way home. He stopped at one of the 3250135 Safeways that are within a mile or two of us, and got me…a bag of Peet’s. Apparently, all they had was Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Peet’s, and Philz! Firstly: Who doesn’t realize that Philz is better than Peet’s? Secondly: What kind of an overpriced Bay Area Safeway doesn’t have 50 different overpriced hipster coffees?!

It won’t be so bad, I told myself, it’s still coffee. And seriously, all those overpriced coffees probably weren’t even worth it.

…But they WERE. This coffee is SUBSTANTIALLY less tasty and pleasant-smelling than my usual fare. The Peet’s is a bit bitter and burnt, and the beans themselves are…oily??

So the moral of the story is, expensive beans may indeed make for yummier coffee than cheap beans, and this is not simply another case of the price deluding us into thinking something is better.

“Just throw them out,” the boyfriend suggested, but there is still way too much grad student/immigrant’s daughter in me, and I can’t bear to throw out a bag of perfectly functional, if not great, coffee.

If you didn’t think me spoiled yet, now you do 🙂 I guess I’ll just go back to drinking my bitter, burnt coffee.

Lol, Koyel! Everything is relative, and you are allowed to complain about your beans! You work very hard to afford the beans of your choice ?

Have to laugh at the coffee story 😉 I like my coffee very strong and black but once in a while, when I have extra time and feel like a treat, I will have a second cup with just a bit of real cream. Can you tolerate a little cream to smooth out the bitter edge or is that a horrific thought?
Your new to you decant sounds so good!

Not a horrific thought at all! Some nice whole milk really rounds out and sweetens coffee. Even then, though, you need good coffee! Even with milk, this stuff tastes all burnt. But thanks for trying to make the beans more palatable!

The perfume really does smell good 🙂 despite the coffee’s best attempts to assault my nose.

What is sad is I have found a coffee I like very much. It’s a house blend at a grocery/restaurant that roasts their own. Except they always seem to be out. It’s not just down the street, so I have to call to see if they have it in stock. It has irritated me, so I stopped calling.

Since I had to be somewhat in the neighborhood of the store with the coffee I like, I called. They had stock, so I trekked over and got three bags. If you hadn’t posted about coffee, I might not have checked. Enabler pin.

Their beans are always that way. I can’t drink the coffee at my parents’ because that’s all they buy. Out of the billion or so “artisan” roasters I seem to be having excellent luck with Klatch, which I have shipped from LA (takes 2 days). Got some in my cup right now.

They’re always burnt and oily? Good to know >.< I'll keep my eyes open for Klatch! I'd hate to get it shipped in, though; some of our Safeways and Whole Foods do have coffees I enjoy.

I was spoiled by living in Toulouse, France–there were a half dozen local roasters with excellent beans within a couple miles of me. And it was relatively cheap, too–a bag of 500 g (~1 lb) for 7 – 10 Eur! Why aren't there more local roasters in the Bay Area?

Stand in front of the coffee beans selection at Rainbow in SF (separate bulk and bagged sections!) and you’ll see how many local roasters there are around here.

Oh hahaha, by “local” I don’t mean “somewhere in Alameda”; I mean down the street from me. There’s something special for me to drink coffee roasted in a building downtown half a mile from my home. I’m sure SF has a couple in-house roasters in that enormous 7×7, but we sure don’t down here in MTV/PA/RWC, and it’s just not as fun when I can’t go get my beans where they were roasted.

That makes me smile. My Mom had a generic coffee can into which she would pour the ground coffee (she preferred the smaller container.). She always made a point of telling us it wasn’t that generic coffee in there. It was Yuban!

Ha! I totally get your coffee conundrum. I *had* to buy Starbucks beans recently at the supermarket and I wasn’t diggin’ it. Yes, I’m under the spell of hipster beans. I’ve tried to downgrade before, but it’s hard to go backwards, isn’t it?
Anyway, I do what lilyjo suggested: mixing in a bit with better coffee. Or, I reserve it for emergency coffee droughts.

Buy a block of chocolate, melt it and dip your Class B beans in chocolate and eat as an after dinner treat ( you will notice the chocolate more than the quality of coffee) . Or use them as the base for tiramisu, afragato or anything combing coffee and alcohol and icecream OR. Take them to work for others to use. Or grind them and add to coconut oil as an exfolliant …no idea if that works

The chocolate-covered bean idea is great! So are your other ideas, except I don’t often make any of those things in normal life. Maybe I should start.

I did think of turning them into body products 🙂 but I already have a lot of scrubs to go through. I don’t like it with coconut oil, though; I prefer mixing them with grapeseed and vitamin E oil as an exfoliant! I suppose it won’t matter if they’re a bit stale for the scrubs, so I could just store them until I run out of my current scrubs. Thanks for the ideas!

Kanuka, coffee beans are a great exfoliant! IME, you don’t need to mix them with coconut (or any) oil. Just take the cooled, used coffee grounds and rub any area you want exfoliated. Best to do this in/near shower as it gets messy.

Lol at your coffee woes, but I totally understand. For a while, my bf and I were buying cheap coffee for weekdays and fancy for weekends. Well, it has evolved into $10.49 bags for the weekday of Top Pot coffee, which is a local donut shop that also makes good coffee. Weekends we normally use $12-$15 coffee.

And girl, you’re almost making me wish I’d kept that Tea for Two because you’re describing it so beautifully! Im glad it’s making you so happy.

I don’t think I could ever have two sets of beans (weekday vs. weekend beans). That takes so much organization! Besides, don’t you deserve some pampering during the week, too??

Actually, I tend to drink mediocre work coffee during the week; today was a special occasion (working from home to take the cat to the vet). But there’s something so disheartening about having mediocre coffee at home!

Haha, sorry, trf!! If you change your mind about the TF2, let me know and I will of course send it back 🙂 But I’ll keep enjoying it in the meantime!

I had never heard of Philz until now–is that a regional West Coast brand? Where I live, the selection of whole bean coffee is limited, and much of it seems to be stale already when you buy it. I won’t pay $$$$ for a cup of coffee, either, so I make my own. I actually only use my Keurig now, because I only want one cup at a time, and I am the only coffee drinker in the house. Whenever I have tried buying whole beans, then end up going stale before I can use up a bag, so I end up throwing at least half of it away.

In any case, I have decided that grinding up beans and brewing one cup of coffee is too much trouble on a work day morning, not to mention that I am too sleepy and disoriented in the morning to go to all that trouble until after I have had a cup of coffee. Back when I had a 4 cup coffee maker that I used I found every possible way to screw it up: (1) I have forgotten to put the coffee grounds into the filter (and made a pot of hot water instead of coffee), (2) I have forgotten to put the water in the reservoir, (3) I have forgotten to turn the power switch on, (4) I forgotten to put the filter in before I put in the coffee grounds (this did result in coffee, but it was a little gritty), (5) I have forgotten to put the carafe under the spout so that the coffee ran all over the counter and the floor. At least with a Keurig, there are a limited number of ways to screw it up, and if I do, trying it over again only takes a minute instead of 10 minutes. I have another Keurig on my desk at work for my second cup that I normally have in the early afternoon.

If anybody thinks a Keurig doesn’t make very good coffee, you should you should taste the burnt, weak, brownish swill that my coworkers make. I’m not sure how something can taste both weak and burnt at the same time, but they manage. I think I think they must use maybe 4 tablespoons of grounds for 10 cups of “coffee”. I have tasted it, and told them that it would have to be at least twice as strong as it is in order to be weak coffee.

I think Philz might indeed be a west coast thing, but it’s pretty prevalent in the Bay Area. Your coffee maker screw-ups sound so sad! I agree that it’s hard to make coffee before you’ve had coffee 🙂 I’ve trained my non-coffee-drinking boyfriend to make me coffee, which is very nice.

Re: beans going stale, I store my beans in a clean, dried mini wine bottle and vacuum seal it with a Vacuvin, and I think that helps; it takes them much longer to go stale. Maybe not worth it for you to try since you’ve got the Keurig system in place, but it works for me!

..’weak and burnt at the same time’. You made my day, that’s hilarious! That’s exactly the swill at my office. I never touch it.

I brew a super strong cup at home for the morning drive and first few minutes to enjoy while my computer is booting up. If I need a refill in the afternoon we have a Tim Hortons across the street.

I wish we had a coffee shop across the street. We have nothing across the street. The nearest town is a 15 minute drive away. I’ve been working in the same place for 29 years and we just last month finally got a cafeteria. The building that houses the cafeteria is so far from the building where I work that just going there and back to get something–even without waiting in line–takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Oh, and the cafeteria is only open from 11 AM to 1PM, AND I am only supposed to take a 30 minute lunch break. It just isn’t worth it to go there and back for just a cup of coffee. Consequently, I bring my own lunch, and I have a Keurig.

Jeez, nothing like making it convenient for your staff to get lunch out if they want. You have to wonder who made those decisions.

Twenty-nine years is phenomenal! Wow. They should be bringing you good coffee and lunch every day ?

I work in a refinery, and it is located some distance from town on purpose . You really don’t want people living right across the street from a refinery if you can help it. The cafeteria is near the main entrance to the plant, and the laboratory where I work is some distance away. I do actually understand the reasons why we are located where it isn’t convenient to go out for lunch or coffee. What I don’t understand is why it took so long for them to build us a cafeteria.

As for my 29 year tenure, that is a good long time, but hardly a record. We did have one employee (not in my department, though) who celebrated his 50 year service anniversary, and we have had a number of people reach 40 years. The petroleum industry does pay well, and has some good benefits. I get 5 weeks of vacation per year, and next year it will go to 6, and when I retire, I will get a pension.

SOT(Y)D was Lancome Miracle. Alas, was not a miracle at all but rather quite a disappointment as it faded from a pretty powdery hopefulness to a generic usual suspect, all within a short time span (maybe about an hour, not even). Oh well.

Not sure what I will wear today, I am contemplating talking a walk on the beach since it is fairly warmish and sunny in my neck of the woods and I could use the exercise, so, perhaps the sea air can substitute for my fragrance.

I used to own Revlon Fire and Ice, bought on the cheap (5 bucks per bottle!) at the local CVS a some time ago, I just used the last of it up a few months ago.

Sampling Cap Neroli from eschmeling’s lovely freebie-meet package of samples. I’m in a dilemma about getting a small bottle. I really like it but there are other PN perfumes that I might like more. This complicated by the 15 ml travel spray gift with purchase option that also includes cap on at least one web vendor site. I was thinking of doing a sample program or getting the discovery set or just sniffing when I go down to the city at some point. Any practical advice on how to go about this?

4711 is fleeting, but bright and crisp (and cheap enough to bathe in) – perfect for a winter day.

I thought NI would have better longevity, but it doesn’t really. It does have more heft, is maybe a little sweeter, but also has a nice herbal note. I think I might get Cap for Spring or Summer…

How about l’Artisan Parfumeur Histoire d’Orangers?

Or, if you might like orange blossom, there’s Hiram Green Dilettante, or Penhaligon’s Castile, among others!

After all the Smell Bent discussion yesterday I went with Prairie Nymph. I got a sample from therabbitsflower on here and it’s love. I would be bathing in this waxy honey carnation goodness if I didn’t have to work.

Nice one! I have PN and it reminds me of rose jam a bit. I tended to overspray it ( like everything) but slowly learnt I liked it better when not so heavy handed. You might also like Gypsy and Glamour Yeti

I can see how they could be cousins, Rose Jam is a lot more sweet and tart to my nose though. I don’t get the mandarin that’s supposed to be in PN at all so it’s all spicy honey.

Hello all! Wearing Le Parfum de Therese today, from a sample.
Neither fire nor ice. I have had this sample for many years and did not like it at first but in the spirit of using up stuff, I revisited it last week. I absolutely love it. I used it up and thinking I might get a travel spray soon. Sometimes it’s good to revisit things. Or not ?

Testing Hyde from a sampler today. No bueno. For some reason I was expecting a leather/animalic, probably because I thought the spelling was HIDE, but it’s HYDE.

Anyway, I didn’t have a chance to participate in the splitmeet due to work and password issues, so I’m offering up the two fragrances listed below. I don’t have room for ”likes,” only for “loves” so these must journey onwards. Please call dibs here and email me with your screen name at taiga101 in the land of yahooligans.

    1) Lush Cardamon Coffee 30ml used 4-5 times

    2) JHAG Moscow Mule 7.5ml travel spray used 2-3 times.

    Happy Humpday !!

It’s colder here than it should be for summer, Guerlain’s Encens Mythique d’Orient seems right (and I’m very pleased to see that my auto-correct is getting more useful again with perfume names – an upgrade a while back lost all the names it had learned to recognise).

One of you fabulous people sent me a decant of Amouage Interlude Woman some time back (swap, freebie, or split – I can’t remember), so I am now sitting in a cloud of warm and slightly bitter exoticness. Nice.

So, I was thinking this morning (as I do many a morning) about how I would prefer to spend my days. I am getting to the point where retirement is a (somewhat soon) possibility, and the more I think about it, the more eager I am to bring it on. Work life seems to get more and more stressful and difficult, and less purposeful, with each semester (I work in the increasingly bureaucratic community college system). I wrote some stuff down in a notebook, but when I logged onto NST this morning, I figured it couldn’t hurt to send it out into the fragrant universe. Here’s what I have so far:

Wake up naturally, to no alarm.
Fix a cup of tea, or coffee if I’m feeling the need.
Feed the animals (currently just Otto Mi Gato, but I’m hoping for more).
Spend an hour or two doing yoga, mobility training, stretching, meditating, and breathing.
Purposeful work: art, gardening, learning, cooking.
Play with the dogs, brush the cats.
    Do good works.
    Eat well.
Spend time with loved ones, or enjoy my solitude, depending on the day.

Did I miss anything? How would y’all spend your days?

I’d probably do some things I have less time for now.
Like, there are volunteer opportunities that I would love to take on, but don’t fit my schedule. The great thing about volunteering is that it keeps a “work” structure in that you have to commit hours, be reliable etc, and it’s a good way to find new communities of people.
And I would take loads of classes, $ permitting.

I totally get this. I’m trying to think of how I can continue to cut expenses and live cheaply, so I can do more of the things that I enjoy on a daily basis.

My biggest hiccup is healthcare. And generally, that’s either through Medicare/supplemental insurance after retirement, or healthcare that is provided through a job before retirement age. Have you found a work around?

Unfortunately, I was born with some congenital heart issues and had partial corrective surgery as a child, but will need more as cardiac function declines. I’m flummoxed on how to even get insurance for the three months I want to take off for Alaska this summer…?

I’ve got healthcare through the college now, but it keeps getting cut back (higher deductibles, fewer options, less coverage, you know the drill).

I’m seriously considering starting a small co-housing group with some of my friends. Piece of land, some cottages, a communal garden, and the sharing of resources and labor.

Alaska sounds lovely. I have a friend who goes every summer to visit her sister on Kodiak island, and she always hates to leave.

I love your first item, waking up naturally. Morning people don’t get it when I say how much I hate the sound of an alarm clock. I really loathe that I have to wake up so early in order to be at work by 7:30 AM.
I would add a couple of things:
      (1) Travel–I want to visit all 50 U.S. states, and am trying to finish that before I retire. I am up to 38, and will probably add 2 more this year, so it is a realistic goal. I would like to finish that goal so that I can travel internationally in retirement, which I do not have enough time off to do properly while I am working.
      (2) Music–I love going to early music workshops and occasionally getting together with other local-ish musicians to jam. By local-ish, I mean that I have to travel ~50 miles to do it. If I were retired, I could do it more often, and go to more than one music workshop per year.
      (3) Reading–I am way behind on books I would like to read, and I really don’t like reading for just 15 or 20 minutes at a time. I want to immerse myself in a book for hours at a time, and I simply cannot do that now.
You already mentioned art, and one thing I definitely plan to do is get back to painting. Painting and music both can absorb any amount of time available to devote to them, can be done any time of the day or night, and are tremendously satisfying.

Traveling so wearing Jasmin et Cigarettes for the second day in a row. I like it well enough, and it’s working for the climate in this part of SC, but I still don’t want a FB. Also, I thought I’d have thunked this sample by now, but it just keeps on going!

I wish I could habe made it out to Greenville to see you, but I’ve had commitments all week after work. Will you be returning at any point?

I love Jasmine et Cigarette in the SC climate. It works beautifully. I hope you’re enjoying the gorgeous weather we’ve been having!

    Good afternoon Y’all…..

Smellin’ fruity chocolately floral in English Laundry Signature for Her. Perfectly wearable…not a love, but a strong like. Perfect for the office because it’s easy to wear and close to the skin. Good stuff!

I’m in Carner Barcelona Sweet William, which I’ve been meaning to wear since Angela’s review some weeks ago. I just love it. I think it’s equal parts carnation and ylang ylang with spices and a white pepper top note.

Still in Spain. My time here is getting short, but as it is my husband is struggling to cope. He took leave, but now work issues are cropping up and the youngest, who usually is accused at school of ignoring kids and being asocial (i.e. on the spectrum) had a physical altercation with another child. No SOTD but I have another perfume shop recommendation: a friend who is in Granada recommended a little perfume store in BibRambla square: not The Beauty Shop, but Beauty The Shop. (Does that have to do with Spanish grammar?) Either way, she thought it was quite eclectic and that I would have enjoyed it. Maybe someone has a trip coming up? It seems the tourist season starts much earlier in Spain than the rest of Europe.

Enjoy the time you have left, Amytis, and hope you are able to keep yourself from getting stressed by long distance issues!

And hugs to your littlest, that is all tough stuff and school is so hard.

This probably amounts to a confession in this crowd, but I was just talked into trying the new Chance Eau Tendre EDP while running in and out of Ulta, and I am loving it! It absolutely smells like shampoo and like nothing in my collection, but it’s making this dreary day somehow fruity and happy while retaining a little bit of that Chanel powderiness.

More spring-like temps where I am at, although a LOT of thick grey clouds have moved in during the afternoon. Rain is promised/threatened for the overnight hours. ☔?

SOTD = CK Euphoria. Still purring along with this. I do have options for fire or ice, should the mood strike.

I am happy for you too! Sometimes I wonder why I am on the elusive quest for “the one” when it’s (or they have) been with me all alone…sitting lonely and neglected in my basement 🙂

I’m envious of the coffee aficionados who have so many options. Maybe I should look into ordering from Philz. Today I’m in Patchouli Nosy Be which isn’t ice but not exactly fire either. It’s ridiculously warm and humid here and I felt so cranky I finally turned on the ac. Hurray! I did 100 errands today and cleaned my study. Amazing how much you can get done when the Internet goes out for the afternoon! I’m cheerful now because I bought a little Oriental rug in a thrift store and it’s perfect in my bedroom. Plus, the cats love it! My classes were lively yesterday but I was cooking because the building still had heat on despite the near 80 degree temperature. Ugh.

Wearing several drops of Prada Vetiver from my mini; not sure if I’m participating this week.

I’m feeling a bit vindicated at work because with the recent restructuring that is ongoing; my Supervisor is trying to get me back on my previous team. Someone else higher up decided to move me to a different team (which would be a nice change, but totally different work). It won’t happen right away in the next week or 2, but he’s fighting for me.
