Wednesday scent of the day 1/2

Posted by Robin on 2 January 2019 159 Comments

Hump Day, National Science Fiction Day, and the 9th day of Christmas (ladies dancing). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm late again, and smelling delicious in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Bakul Medjool (a good match for Pantone Caramel Café).

Reminder: on 1/4, wear a fragrance to match Living Coral, Pantone's color of the year for 2019 (see below).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Amouage Opus III which is more of a golden yellow than any shade of pink. It’s gorgeous though and I felt like wearing it.

I really like it, but then I adore both neroli and orange blossom scents. While I did get a bit of an astringent herbal note when first applied, I am now getting straight up white florals strong on orange blossom, without a hint of cumin. That may come out in the long drydown. It is also still going strong almost 6 hours after applying.

I adore them too, but it always wore as heavy cumin on me. I do wonder if it’s still the same — seems likely they would clean it up.

When I first tried it probably about6 years ago now, it was cuminy to me. I’ve tried it very recently and get zero cumin (but too much white musk in the base for me). So I think they must have reformulated it.

I love FdO on others, but on me, it’s straight up B.O. I discovered this by accident when I attended a meeting and a few folks mentioned a ‘distinct gamey odor’. 😀

It’s BO on me too. Love the first few moments of the opening but it’s really bad shortly after. First time I tested it, I wanted to cry of disappointment. ?

I’m commando so far, seeking inspiration for what to put on today. I’ve got to go to physical therapy before too long, and don’t want anything too overwhelming. Still unsure of what to associate with this color, but I do like its vibrancy. The entire range above is quite beautiful. I’ve been thinking of paint colors recently because I’m having part of my house repainted from a sort of pale adobe which it was when I bought it to a very pale blue called ‘white sapphire’. It’s not as cold as a pure bright white but it’s more cool than the pink-y tone that I’m sick of, and I like how it’s making my house feel. Coral accents would look good in here. Hope other people are enjoying a nice start to their new year. It’s gray and rainy here, but at least it’s not snow!

I think you like thrillers and I have just finished a terrific Australian one called Scrublands (2018). It is set in a small town, journalist investigating a crime that was committed the previous year. The descriptions of the dry, blistering heat are wonderful.

The last day of the mini-vacation, will be flying back later today (a bitter-sweet feeling: it was good time spent with friends but I missed Rusty). Just “thunked” a sample of Atelier Cologne Pamelo Paradis – nice as most of their colognes but I do not need more of it. Post-shower will finish the sample of Guerlain Tonka Imperiale: I really like it but have another sample of it to go through before I need to decide, so at the speed I use any perfumes, it’s another year or two.

For those who is back to work already: have a quick hump day: the weekend is nearing!

Happy New Year, NST! I spent the past two days recovering from a cold, and used it as an excuse to stay home all day, do some light housework, cook, and rest. It was so nice to stay home with no place to go.

Back to work today in Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury. It’s probably more of an orangey-yellow than a coral.

I like it. I wanted the fruit to hang around longer though—the fruity opening went away too quickly for me and became a soft vetiver drydown. Not too sweet. And probably not full bottle worthy, but quite decent!

That’s kinda what I thought…it’s unstructured and soft, easy to wear. It’s the polar opposite of, say, No 19. I don’t think I need a FB either, but it’s nice to have undemanding perfumes in the lineup.

    Good Morning
I am sipping homemade chai and enjoying the sunshine (evening though the temperature is so cold)

I saw Kinky Boots this week which I loved. While strutting around time square with my better half, the sole of my shoe completely separated so today I visited my shoe guy. Every time we have an encounter he always keeps me up to date on football (and when I say that, I mean soccer) I was more into that when the World Cup was happening last year, but I don’t mind listening to all of it. One day I will tell him how I follow all my favorite (and when I say favorite I mean good looking) players on social media. 😉

    Happy New Year to all..

Ugh! I’ve had the sole of my runner completely separate TWICE when I was caddying on the golf course. And my runners aren’t cheap. I’m not sure why it happened but it is a very strange feeling.

My hubby ‘fixed’ my other shoe (the good one) by ripping off that sole as well so at least I wouldn’t be off-kilter. And I got to buy new runners afterwards.

Wearing the wonderful Incense Rosé today! We’re going on a fun adventure in DC, so my mother won’t be near me to tell me I smell like snuff. It’s certainly not coral-colored, but the box labeled Living Coral contains an awful lot of shades of coral, so I’m not quite sure which color to match. Anyway, the only coral scent I can think of is Aedes de Venustas signature. Any other ideas?

Happy new year, all, if it still counts 🙂

Last night I re-discovered a little cache of winter perfumes I’d pulled together then forgotten about. From it, I’m wearing Rania J Ambre Loup, a lovely mothball-y resinous amber.

It’s not coral to my mind, as admittedly I find it hard to see ambers in any other shade but… amber. But I do love that Pantone swatch. As a fan of lipstick scents, there’s a lot in my collection that would make a good match.

I’m headed off for a long weekend in Savannah tomorrow. I’ve been checking the weather rather obsessively, and the forecast keeps improving – 50s to 60, to high 60s. Yay! But it poses a perfume conundrum. Winter is still winter, but are the temps more like spring? or fall? The perfume selection I’d put together initially is a bit random, but a solution struck me this morning:

I’ve taken a couple of trips just with a selection of Chanel minis: Misia, Beige, Cristalle, 19, 5, BdI. Most of said minis have since been drained, so I’ll have to make decants, including one of Coromandel, but that’s an array with something to fit any situation and weather.

I love Savannah! Went there with my husband for him to run a marathon (he has a goal of doing one in all 50 states, but unfortunately sidelined at the moment with an injury and going to physical therapy). My goal while there was the tour-de-shrimp and grits. Every restaurant served it and each one was different. I was also told by more than one person not to bother with the Paula Deen restaurant as the quality apparently has gone down to the overrated-tourist-trap level.

I’m visiting the Queen today. We won’t be dancing, though! It been a while, but she still hits the spot!

I’ve been in the No Phone Zone except for brief moments, so haven’t been able to keep up with comments.?

I hope everyone had a relatively good holiday and ushered in a new year that will hopefully ?? be good to us all.

I am thinking of Gerald Durrell’s Strawberry pink villa (My family and other animals – book I read as a kid) as a match for one of those corals and putting it with CDG Chalayan Airborne, a good sharp mediterranean summer scent. I took the dogs for a long hill circuit walk yesterday and it was too hot . But the smell rising from the gum trees was incredible, it made my eyes water. Then coming back through the cemetery the air smelled of rose infused turkish delight. We had to rest in the shade before the final push up the hill

I read this Durrell’s book this summer- well, listened to it books on tape. It was hilarious. I found it much more enjoyable than his brother’s more literary efforts. But I am more grown up now, and do have a thing for the city of Alexandria. Perhaps I will try reading them again.
SOTD Shalimar with added vanilla, lovely stuff.
Those coral colors also remind me of the desert, rather than the sea. I believe I will wear Rose de Petra for the Friday CP, unless something more apropo occurs to me before then.

I have not read the Gerald Durrell Corfu trilogy books in years but I did love them. Pretty sure I never finished book 2 of the Alexandria Quartet, and even Justine was hard going. Let me know if they are better on the second try!

They are buried in some box of “Books I never finished but should”. I will see if I can dig them out this weekend. I have a vague recollection of putting them into the category of “Alcoholic attempts to understand interpersonal relationships” and being bored by them, but perhaps I was not in the right frame of mind to appreciate them. ? I will report back!

I am wearing Wrappings today. Nothing peachy pink about it, so it doesn’t fit the project, unless I imagine the rose note (I read some place that it has one) is from a coral colored rose.

House twins with Robin, sampling DSH’s Taj Garden. I did my usual little dab and didn’t like it at all, so perversely I proceeded to give my arm a decent spray. I guess I figured that what reviewers have raved about would miraculously appear? Well, nope! So now I’m feeling nauseous, but I’m not sure if it’s the perfume, maybe a virus making itself known, or the rather large quantity of pickled jalapenos I ate earlier. Could be one of the above, a combo of any of the above, or all of them combined at once. Anyway, “Living Coral” it isn’t.

    1) Happy New Year, everyone! Yay! We made it!

    2) SOTD: Tom Ford’s Noir (pour femme) – perfect for this cold day.

    3) National Science Fiction Day! Have doing a selected re-watch of Star Trek Next Generation (for many of us, THE Star Trek) and brings up the question of what would the characters wear.

It’s a spaceship, with recycled but clean air, so would people even be ALLOWED to have perfume or cologne? I say yes, but it would have to be office friendly:

Picard: What with Q, The Borg, scheming Romulans, hostile Klingon royals and Kardashians-er, Cardassians- a man has to have something elegant and flexible. Since Picard is repping for Western Culture in general and French landed class in particular(!!!) I think Picard would have an ever so discreet splash or Guerlian Vetiver in the Alpha shift.

Riker: Deals with all of the above, PLUS having to make his boss look good while letting people think that he is not ready for command( he totally is!) Riker is from Alaska but really does not wear scent at all, except in his beard oil.

Worf: Real warriors drink tea, write and recite love poetry and wear Cuir de Russie.

Deanna Troi: She has to deal with the mental health of the command crew PLUS direct the mental health therapy of the ship. In times of battle she is the vital gut check for the Captain. She will want to smell delicately comforting, so she would wear Monoi oil, in tiny drops, in her hair.

Dr Crusher/Dr Polaski/Nurse Ogawa: These are medical professionals and they do not wear scent, not even light ones.

Wesley Crusher: Follows his mom’s lead and does not wear scent.

Data: has synthetic skin that probably emits an aroma akin to a newborn baby’s scalp, so no need for added scent.

SOTD was Dior Bois D´Argent. I am trying to thunk my BIG 15ml decant. Alas, i find the scent mildly boring, just some honeyed sweetness and woods. I prefer more oomph. Today a wore at least six sprays and can hardly smell it.
Maybe i will skank it up with a bit of Marlou 50ml D´Ambiguité, which is the skankiest i ever smelled….(in the beginning its smelling like an old pissoir!).

I love that shade of coral. Very flattering. Will have to look for a sweater or scarf that has it. Wearing Casmir today after seeing it come up a few times lately. It probably has nothing to do with Living Coral, but I am honestly not sure what does. Will have to sit perusing my collection before Friday. Just started reading the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny after seeing it in a few reading polls and enjoying it so far. Hope everyone’s New Year is off to a good start!

I see I’m not the only one who chose No 19 EDP today. I’m trying to make a point to wear from decants that are evaporating. At first I thought my No 19 decant was evaporating, but now I realize it’s just going down from use! So tomorrow then I’ll wear from one of those decants. Yesterday I wore from a sample of CdG Nomad Tea and thunked it. It’s nice but nothing special on me. Last night I retried PG Musc Maori and moved what’s left of the sample to the give away baggie. It’s too straight up sweet for me.

Living Color is a beautiful color, but I have had zero luck matching it so far to a perfume. I’ll have to do some extra sniffing to see if I have anything at all that works.

SOTD = Elizabeth & James Nirvana Rose, from the decant stash. This is either magenta or amaranth purple to me. Definitely NOT a pretty pastel pink! ???

Hi good-smelling friends! Happy New Year! Finally checking in, it’s been a crazy few days. A little blizzard blew through and my flight to Alabama to see my son was cancelled. Finally got out Sunday so I spend a couple of days with him and had a great time. Took Angel Muse with me. Made it back right in time last night, they cancelled all inbound flights to Albuquerque after mine due to another snow storm. I’m working from home today. Believe it or not I’ll be happy to be back at work and get into a routine.

I’m in Shalimar for today’s snow day.

I tried out a number of samples today. I started with American Perfumer Colorado on one arm (from the sample I got with my bottle of Desert Flower), and St. Clair First Cut on the other. Later in the day, I samples Frost, Dasein Winter, and Dasein Winter NIghts.

Colorado smells to me like sitting around a campfire in the early evening, as the sun is setting but while it is still warm, with occasional whiffs of the evening meal that was recently consumed. I definitely get something foody or chewy out of it. I don’t need a bottle of it, but I am definitely glad to get a chance to sample it.

First Cut was a disappointment. I kept detecting a weird plasticky note that I could not identify. Is that by any chance the tomato leaf? In any case, I did not enjoy it.

After a while I tried Frost on the other arm, near the elbow (Colorado was on my wrist), and liked it perhaps even less than First Cut. There was an odd, acrid, almost metallic note that grated on my nerves.

Winter seems promising, although my nose was a little tired after First Cut and Frost, so I need to test it again when my nose is fresher. It has a slight hint of sweetness that keeps it from being too green. Winter Nights has a really strong tarry/smoky note that is not to my taste.

So far, the only St. Clair scent I have liked is Casablanca, and that one is a like, not a love. It is very pretty, and I will use up the samples, but I mostly just get a lot of orange blossom with a few other flowers thrown in. Maybe it is my general incompatibility with white florals. It doesn’t give me a headache as some white florals do (although it is mostly jasmine that is the worst offender on this count, and not orange blossom), but it didn’t wow me either.
