Frederic Malle Music For A While ~ fragrance review & quick pineapple poll

Posted by Kevin on 16 May 2018 61 Comments

Allure irrésistible. At a party on Paris’ rive gauche (where the ‘intellectuals’ with black AMEX cards study…party and shop) a woman’s fur coat (SO 80s, SO démodé) is lifted from her bare shoulders, exposing her neck to the candlelight (what about her face?…tiny candle?) Aware of many eyes upon her (“What a NECK!”), she pauses, smiling to herself, before emerging like a conqueror from the shadows. (Doesn’t take much! Sounds like Kim Kardashian, doesn’t it?)

Delete the bold type and this is how Frédéric Malle PR describes Music For A While,* the brand’s latest perfume. I grunt and roll my eyes as I read the fuddy-duddy copy, but as often happens with this brand (its backstories annoy l’enfer out of me), the fragrance makes me smile and present my (non-black) American Express card at Barneys New York…

Wednesday scent of the day 5/16

Hump Day, plus Sea-Monkey Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

When I was young I used to love to go see the First Lady gowns at the National Museum of American History. They’ve updated the exhibit several times since then, and the more relevant they make it to modern concerns the less I like it, but that’s the way, right? Shown above is detail from a reception dress owned by Lucy Hayes, but for scent I’ve gone with a favorite of Jackie Kennedy’s, Jean Patou Joy. Joy would work for any formal gown, and it’s doing just fine with my ratty old cardigan (it’s quite chilly here this morning).

Reminder: on 5/18 we’re celebrating Museum Day…

The patchouli mint fragrance does not sound like my cup of tea, but I love the cheerful tourist packaging of Cath Kidston's London Hand Cream trio ("Keep your hands super soft with luxurious hand cream. With shea butter, glycerin and peppermint extract, it's designed to lock in moisture, condition the skin and stop it from drying out. Oh, and it smells like delicious patchouli mint!"). The three 30 ml tubes are $11 at Cath Kidston (although I rather doubt that includes shipping).

The odors of healthy people

Malaria infection does not create new volatile chemicals in the body, but alters the amounts—up or down—of volatile chemicals that are already present in the odors of healthy people.

"It is interesting that the symptomatic and asymptomatic infections were different from each other as well as from healthy people," said Mark C. Mescher, adjunct professor of biology, Penn State, and professor of environmental systems science, ETH Zurich.

This difference among infected, infected asymptomatic, and healthy individuals may eventually lead to tests capable of rapidly and accurately identifying infected people, even those without symptoms.
