The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 7 July 2018 4 Comments

For fans of MAC Turquatic: the body wash is on mark down, to $22 for 200 ml. "This gel-based moisturizing body wash cleanses the skin while scenting it lightly with M·A·C's signature Turquatic Fragrance. Additionally, lavender, narcissus and jasmine flower waxes soften the skin while blue agave extract provides moisture. The Turquatic scent portrays an evocative and unforgettable freshness, providing a unique cleansing experience. This product can be used all over the body in the shower or the bath, and is perfect as a first step in layering this vividly refreshing fragrance." At MAC. Simmering over the years

Posted by Robin on 7 July 2018 3 Comments

Some ideas for perfumes come to [Dawn Spencer] Hurwitz as fast, middle-of-the-night flames of inspiration, but others start as sparks, simmering over the years as she thinks about the themes she wants to explore. For her recently-released scent Onycha, she began looking for materials in 1993. She had found many scents with the label of Onycha, named for a fragrance mentioned in Middle Eastern texts, Calvinistic texts and the Bible. [...] So she set off in search for the perfect mix that balanced ancient aromas of musk, smoky smells of incense and oceanic odors of a pleasant-smelling shellfish. After years of formulating the perfume in her head, she finally released the scent in 2015, more than 20 years after the idea first came to her.

I occasionally have a week when I just can’t keep up mentally with all the new fragrance releases, or I’m running short on time and haven’t ordered any samples or visited any stores lately. This was one of those weeks. However, I did share a much-needed coffee catch-up with an old friend, and she surprised me by handing me a little bag of Frédéric Malle samples that she said she longer needed (!). This serendipitous gift seemed like an opportunity for my next review topic, especially when I realized that a few fragrances in the range are still relative strangers to me.

Spritzing on some Outrageous, described as “a cocktail of clean sex appeal” with notes of bergamot, tangerine, green apple, cinnamon, musk and ambroxan, I realized that I’ve never really spent time with this scent before. It was developed for Malle’s Editions des Parfums by perfumer Sophia Grojsman and was originally released in 2007 as an exclusive to Barneys Co-Op, the younger, edgier spin-off of upscale department store Barneys New York. It was then called Outrageous! (with exclamation point, shown above left) and had special, snazzy blue-and-orange packaging…
