Friday scent of the day 7/20

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2018 442 Comments

Welcome to the Cocktail Party! Our community project for today: tell us about your favorite cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), provide a recipe if you like, and wear a perfume that would complement your choice. It doesn’t have to be a boozy fragrance!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I wish I had some terribly creative cocktail to share with you, but the truth is, the recipe I listed yesterday for the Charbay vodka tonic is pretty much what I do with any liquor. At home, my usual summer drink is the Italian aperitif wine Cocchi Americano, on grapefruit ice cubes with tonic syrup, mineral water and a twist, sometimes with a dash of bitters, sometimes not. In the winter, I often use Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino in place of the Americano. My fragrance match: good old Eau de Guerlain…

From Portland Syrups, Rose Cordial ("Fragrant, whole dried rose blossoms and petals are slow-brewed in stages with dried rose hips, to capture the flower’s essence at several stages of its expression. It is sweet and tart with a subdued but complex floral character, and is extremely versatile. Wonderfully refreshing on it’s [sic] own, or add clear liquors for an especially delightful cocktail.") and Rose City Tonic Syrup ("Portland's own House Spirits approached us to create a tonic that paired with their award-winning Aviation gin. This authentically-brewed whole-ingredient tonic, made with genuine cinchona bark, features a delicate floral layer that supports but does not compete with Aviation's spice roster. Cinchona, the bittering bark from which tonics get their quinine, delivers a complex, gently astringent tonic “bite.” This makes the driest gin and tonic you'll find — simply stir it with a bit of sparkling water prior to building your drink."). $14 each for 473 ml.

£10m worth

Burberry, the upmarket British fashion label, destroyed unsold clothes, accessories and perfume worth £28.6m last year to protect its brand. It takes the total value of goods it has destroyed over the past five years to more than £90m. [...] The FTSE 100 company said last year was unusual as it had to destroy a large amount of perfume after signing a new deal with US firm Coty. As Coty would be making new stock, Burberry had to dispose of £10m worth of old products - largely perfume.

Thursday scent of the day 7/19

Happy Almost-Friday! It’s also Daiquiri Day. (I am heading home from vacation today, so won’t be around to comment or answer emails.) What fragrance are you wearing?

My favorite vodka tonic: Charbay Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, ice cubes made from fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, a couple spoonfuls of Jack Rudy tonic syrup, mineral or soda water, twist of orange peel, dash of cardamom bitters. The matching fragrance that I would be wearing if I weren’t about to spend the whole day in the car with my long-suffering son: Hermès Eau de Pamplemousse Rose.

Reminder: on 7/20 we’re having a Cocktail Party…

The daily lemming

A lemming for a perfumista cocktail party: Zymurgorium Manchester Sweet Violet Gin Liqueur. "Combining sweet violets with a gin base made using 20 botanicals, Sweet Violet Gin is a unique and distinctive liqueur made by Manchester’s original artisan micro-distillery, Zymurgorium. Boasting an incredible parma violet flavour with an underlying gin presence, it manages to avoid the tendency towards a syrup-like viscosity that many gin liqueurs have. The sweet violets used to create this beautiful gin liqueur give it a sweet pastel flavour and provide a strong violet aroma, making this delicious to drink on its own or mixed in cocktails." £27 at Harvey Nichols.
