An icy cocktail

Posted by Robin on 22 December 2018 5 Comments

She settled on an icy cocktail of Scotch pine, blue spruce, French lavender and black cardamom, which she began selling in 2013 at just three local boutiques. She sold 100 bottles of Winter in less than a week and suddenly had more orders than she could fill.

“There is a whole back-to-the-earth movement going on with the aesthetic elite right now — potato sack dresses, neutral colors, less grooming,” Ms. Rader said. “People want the perfume equivalent of slow cooking.”

— Perfumer Samantha Rader of Dasein on her Winter fragrance. (We have not reviewed Winter, but Jessica did review Winter Nights, which Ms. Rader developed with Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors.) Luca Turin gave Winter 4 stars in the new Guide. I appreciated their including many small brands like Dasein that I had been curious about or had not heard of.

I sort of like the idea of a fragrance you only sell for part of the year…eventually I will get around to trying it!

I sprang for a sample of Winter and also of Winter Nights. Spring sounded the most appealing to me, but was sold out on the Dasein site. Sample were still available from Olfactif, however, so I went for a deluxe 5 ml spray.

I think she only sells them seasonally!

The Dasein site mad it sound as if Spring was sold out forever; it didn’t mention anything about it coming back in a few months, so I didn’t know. I probably wouldn’t remember to go back at the right time anyway.
