Monday scent of the day 12/10

Posted by Robin on 10 December 2018 246 Comments

Happy Monday and happy Human Rights Day. Birthdays: Ada Lovelace, Emily Dickinson, Cornelia Funke. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando for some morning errands. Plan for the afternoon: jasmine, via my latest splurge, Aftelier Candide.

Reminder: on 12/14, wear a fragrance by Dame Perfumery, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Divine or DS & Durga, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter D.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from Watercolour portrait of Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, circa 1840, possibly by Alfred Edward Chalon via Wikimedia Commons.

I’m starting my personal project of trying some of my samples for the first time. First up is Gold Knight by Killian. Started with patchouli and honey. So far I like it.

Good morning Y’all…..I was gonna complain about 3 days of endless rain, but then again, it could have been snow and ice. I’ll take the rain anyday!

I’ve been wearing Givenchy Ysatis all weekend, and again today….it might even be replacing No 5 Eau Premiere as my all time favorite scent. What a masterpiece! Another Dominique Ropion gift to the world…. 🙂

It might have gotten very concentrated? So not everything is staying in solution? There’s only so much oil that can stay dissolved in ethanol/water.

Being too lazy, I have too much to do to hang out on the internet (but yelling at myself to get motivated does nothing, sadly.) I’m going to try layering DSH American Beauty w/a bit of Kiehl’s Musk when I finally move off the couch.

Prada Purple Rain! Thunk! I was shocked when yesterday I found that the large decant had evaporated almost 90% in a matter of a year. So frustrating! I need to stop hoarding my decants and samples and start wearing and thunking them quickly before evaporation kills them all. Such a beautiful and easy to wear iris, vetiver fragrance. I will miss it and hope a full bottle joins my collection some day…

I’ve noticed that Sephora samples evaporate within a few months, so better to go ahead and use ’em up fast. Luckyscent samples last for YEARS, so I can enjoy them over time…..

I hate when a decant goes though….that’s a lot more ‘fume to lose!

      10 December 2018 at 12:53 pm

Oof, that’s a big loss. Sorry! The fear of evaporating/spoiling decants/samples has made me preferentially use spray decants/samples over my full bottles. That’s a little sad, because my FBs are my favorites. I haven’t quite reconciled these competing factors yet.

I know! It is very difficult when you have your full bottles that you adore, but at the same time hundreds of samples and decants that are disappearing and you would also love to wear. If I only wear samples and decants I will neglect my full bottles for years and I am also scare to find out one of these days that my full bottles are also evaporating. Not enough time to cover everything 🙁

Supporting your no-buy! I did much better with my perfume shopping this year and I have had some time to use more what I already have. I am committed to no-shopping at all next year and I hope to make a dent in my collection! Let’s see how it goes!

          • springpansy says:
            10 December 2018 at 3:21 pm

I feel like the minute I say “no-buy,” I immediately want things. (My immature reaction, I’m sure.) But I’m in for a low-buy. I’ve only spent $250 this year and sticking to my budget of $300. Including samples. It’s been fun and forced me to prioritize.

I’ve been using Robin’s system of adding things to a wishlist where they have to live for a while prior to making acquisition. Most times they just stay there or get deleted.

        • Koyel says:

It would be nice to join a no-buy group the same way some of us here join the thunking club this year. At least until we reduce some the unbeliable amount of perfume that is stopping us from enjoy what we have. Crazy! We can support each other as usual! I am ready for it!

I’m in! I am also planning a no-buy for 2019. I’ve decided anything I want that badly, I will still want in 2020 and probably enjoy more for having waited. (Although I have a little escape clause for estate sales and if Slumberhouse ever does one of their limited-edition revivals of Vikt.)

Robin, I bet you smell fabulous.

I’m in I’m Home from LUSH, in a “sample” made for me by the kind but confused SA I encountered at the shop yesterday, who sprayed some scent on a cotton pad and sealed it in a little LUSH sample tub. After complaining about not having any chocolate scents this weekend, this smells like the perfect scent to fill the chocolate-sized hole in my line-up.

The boyfriend and I begin our vacation on Thursday, so this weekend, we opened our stockings. He got me a Diptyque candle!!! It is one of the Christmas ones, Amande something. It’s soooooo beautiful and comes with a stunningly beautiful gilt little booklet containing stories. They also gave him a little bag of perfume and skincare samples, which was nice because he previously got me some Jo Malone body products and came back with ZERO samples, which made me sad. Oh well, I’ve always liked Diptyque better anyway. Looking forward to burning it soon!

I was so looking forward to wearin all my Divines this week, that I promptly forgot all about the CP this morning and am wearing MFK Oud instead. I can’t make up my mind about this one. I had expected it to smell a lot different. It’s very light, for an oud. Not unpleasant, but diffent somehow.

In Ylang 49—this week’s CP is going to be tough for me. Unless otherwise inspired, I am planning on wearing Chincilla on Friday, my only FB from the project list. I might have one or two samples by DSH floating around, but none of the others.

In other news, our kitten is out of his mind with happiness that we brought inside, of all things, a real live, pine needle covered tree. And if that seemed like the most amazing thing, we managed to top it by filling the tree with what can only be described as delectably shiny and sharp cat toys.

We are taking bets on how long our Christmas tree will stay vertical.

We keep our Christmas tree on the balcony for this reason. I did walk past a house the other day with what looked like a real Christmas tree that was still vertical and intact, and also a beautiful, fluffy cat in the window, so apparently some cats are not little devils.

Oh crumbs. Meant also to wish everyone a thoughtful Human Rights Day. Today is also the close of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, which doesn’t mean much here in the US but elsewhere in the world marks the 16 days between November 5, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and today.

And just to extend my American-centricity one more moment and our role in International Human Rights Day…. Reflecting on the Civil Rights movement, in 1961 Eleanor Roosevelt had this wish for America: “It seems to me that America’s objective today should be to try to make herself the best possible mirror of democracy that she can.” Amen.

I am betting that the tree has at least teetered, if not toppled, by the time you read this post. And/or the kitty has had to have something sharp removed from some kitty-body part. 😀

Ok, I don’t know if I need advice or just an opportunity to rant to the friendly. Yesterday I was supposed to go to a small family member’s birthday party. (She’s a toddler.) My BIL and his mother are “very sensitive” to perfume. (I don’t know what this means exactly or what the effects are on them, as they have never told me.) As I result, I *never* wear perfume around them and *always* take a shower before seeing them, just to be sure there is no stray ‘fumes. And yet, just about every time I am to see them, including yesterday, I get a text from my SIL (his wife) asking me not to wear perfume because of how “sensitive” they are. She is clearly writing at his request and she is *very* nice about it, but the situation infuriates me. I have been accommodating this issue for about five years now and am always compliant. Last time I went to their house, I realized a winter scarf was perfumey and apologized profusely and tucked it away from the group. But still, I get these texts.

I wasn’t feeling great yesterday, but probably still would have tried to go to see the kids. Instead I stayed home and read Emily Dickinson, as it turns out, which made me happy. But today I am still furious. I wrote back politely that I never wear perfume when I go over there and it must be on my clothes and I am so sorry — but this isn’t really how I feel.

So, I know there is no advice to give as I write this. Really I just have to be super vigilant and suck it up. But I find the entire thing really upsetting and insulting in ways I can’t quite get a handle on. Oof.

So today wearing Cuir Ottoman and smelling myself happily.

Thanks for putting up with the rant!

Oh gosh. How frustrating and annoying, especially considering the lengths you go to accommodate. I’m sorry. The fact that it’s family makes it worse because you can’t just call it a day on the high maintenance relationship. Such a bummer you have to deal with this. Hopefully it’s not too often that you do. Feeling for you!

Is it possible that you’re misinterpreting the text? It sounds like you think they are saying you DO wear perfume around them; perhaps they’re just reminding you not to because they’ve had other experiences with people forgetting?

I don’t think I need to be reminded every time I see them to be honest. And if that was the intention, it would be helpful for it to be stated. But you are more patient than me!

Feeling totally irritated on your behalf. There are completely infuriating things that in-laws do that you cannot ask them to stop doing, such as sending so many texts asking repeatedly that you not wear perfume (I agree that even “polite’ texts/reminders transgress into rude/judginess when they are sent too often). Imagine if you could politely text them that you yourself are sensitive–extremely sensitive to too many texts telling you the same thing. When you get too many, you have a painful and long-lasting allergic reaction (including symptoms of raised blood pressure, irritability, and antisocial ideation).

Actually I have sort of jokingly say “don’t worry, no perfume!” to nip it in the bud, but I get a weird grimace. I think BIL just sees me and *thinks* he smells perfume, but who knows! And SIL is embarrassed by the whole situation, so I feel badly for her.

Well, because they’re family, they are adept at pushing your buttons, as evidenced by your continuing anger. So, I think you have two options:

      1) tell them to quit texting you asking you to not do the things that you aren’t doing anyway.

      2) wear whatever perfume you want and to hell with it.

Sorry, I’m not too accommodating with game players. Either way, they should shut up.

Good thing I don’t have family, right? ?

I love seeing you and the children and am committed to being scent free around you. I would kill em with kindness, sincerity and honesty. How about designing a really cool T Shirt with images of perfume bottles with the words “It’s OK. I’m NOT wearing perfume” and wear that next time you go around. Make it really cool design-wise and kind of fun rather than passive aggressive. They will get the message and leave you alone.

Arg, family. Isn’t it aggravating to have to be the responsible adult in the family???

I have a dear friend who maintains that she is ‘allergic to perfume’. She seems to be utterly unaware that there is ‘perfume’ in her shampoo, soap, detergent, dryer sheets. And her daughter’s perfume is fine because it’s “fresh”. Mine, on the other hand, is apparently not fine, so I end up just not wearing perfume around her. Bah.

What I find odd is that it’s the SIL tasked with emailing, even though it’s the BIL and his mother with the issue. They don’t have hands and can’t type themselves? And one would hope they send that reminder to all rather than just you if they’re that sensitive. (And I had a friend once who was that sensitive,…)

I wouldn’t exactly be nice to them about this. Tell them that their shampoo, soap and lotions are full of perfume so they can’t exactly claim to be that allergic. You can tell them that you don’t have time for passive aggressive texts like that and not to do it ever again.

Oh, dear. Passive aggressive humiliation games. Sounds like they’re ruminating quite a bit about this when you’re not there. That in itself is sad.
But, I agree that it’s fine to say something. I’d probably say that I have already been informed and am well aware of your needs and do my utmost to respect them, but I’m asking you to return that respect by not sending me a reminder every time since it feels humiliating to me and I’m sure that that you don’t want me to feel that way (?)

It’s totally humiliating! I can’t imagine that they think you just don’t remember and *need* a reminder everytime. In fact I suspect it’s not about perfume at all and some crap is just getting projected on to you. Anyway, enough of my amateur psychoanalysis, lol. You have every right to maintain your self respect. And if done directly, but politely, you’ve done no harm, and in fact are displaying self-love ?

      I totally feel your pain.

My BIL is a perfume phobe poseur. He rolls down the window when he “detects” my perfume. I think I’ve relayed how I put him in his place. I once uncapped a scented hand cream and he twitched and told me that it smelled and to please not wear it next time (who doesn’t like the smell of Weleda Skin Food?). The next time we got together, I made a big production of uncapping unscented hand cream and my brother in law started to protest. I asked him what he smelled and he pointed to the hand cream tube. I told him it was unscented and he had no choice but to keep his mouth shut.

Nowadays, my sister calls and/or texts me to say not to wear strong perfume whenever I get together with them. I’ve learned not to re-up on perfume before leaving my house. I also try to wear more gourmand perfumes although with a lot of restraint.

My mom, on the other hand, just says I am killing her.

I think I would suggest that he has some sort of psychological issue – a strange phobia that he might want to investigate with a therapist- since he imagined smelling an unscented product. I might even go so far as finding him the name of a good therapist and give it to him in a solicitous but public way.

Wearing DSH Fleurs d’Oranger for the CP today. I’ve been thinking of wearing it ever since I made up a decant pack of orange blossom perfumes for another NSTer. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough of this one to share, but I kept it pit l out to wear soon and today’s the day. It’s in the little dram flask that she uses. I think it’s a quite classical OB perfume so that it almost smells vintage. My perfume-sensitive coworker is staying home sick, so I can probably get away with reapplying some dabs in the bathroom.

The first one was released in the 1950s and was the signature scent of Theirry Mugler’s mother which inspired him for his Angel…I only know this because I had a good friend who was an Angel fiend and she once sent me a decant of Nirmala (current version)..it really does smell similar to Angel. So Aurora, it sounds like you might have the one that Angel was copied or inspired from.

Hi NST! I’m back in CK Reveal today. It hums along nicely in the background while I tend to the many work tasks that must be done before the holidays.

Actually, being busy is a welcome distraction from an extremely upsetting incident in my bf’s family that blew up over the weekend. The worst part is there are two very young kids in the middle of the whole mess.

My heart goes out to everyone dealing with stressful family situations this holiday season. My coping strategy is yoga. The small bit of good news from this weekend is that I went to a yoga workshop on Saturday and got into some fairly advanced poses that I didn’t even know I could do. Can’t wait to get home and hit the mat!

I started a drastic purge of my samples and decants over the weekend. Most of them had been sorted alphabetically by perfume name in small boxes, but I decided to sort them this time by brand and to keep only the brands that were important to me—everything from Arquiste to Zoologist but goodby to Demeter and Masque Milano. It has nothing to do with quality, just personal taste. My cleaning lady will get a few hundred by the time I’m done. I’m not sure why this sort makes more sense to me, but I hope it means I’ll dip into Guerlain and Le Labo more frequently.

SOTD is Hothouse by Smell Bent, which made the cut.

I remember learning Ada (computer language named in her honor) in college. She was awesome 🙂

I’m gonna be a complete fail on the CP this week. The Dames I own are all summer scents. Ditto for the one DS I own. And my DSH’s are all spring scents. Ah well.

SOTD is And The World Is Yours. Rich, rich, rich honeyed orange blossom. Definitely not my usual thing but I am enjoying it on this chilly day! I think it would kill me in warm weather though. We’ll save this one for winter.

Back from holiday. It pelted with rain for 4 days and everyone got really sick except for me ( cleaning vomit at 2am) Hurray! Great place though and lots of wild beaches, seals, no carnivorous snails (boo) and read three books, mostly duds. The roadsides were a mass of lupins which smell of a combination of clover and daffodils. The world needs a lupin perfume!
Disaster with a blind buy. 1997, oof. Not for me but at least I now know what palo santo smells like.

Ick, sorry about the sick rainy vacation. I also bought 1997 and swapped it away already, discovered I do not like Palo Santo oil in large doses. It’s good when well-blended homeopathic doses, such as Carner Barcelona Palo Santo.

Ha! Homeopathic is right. No Palo Santo was harmed in the making of CB Palo Santo (I didn’t smell any). I like burning the wood outside in the summer but don’t enjoy wearing it either. Too minty for me.

Beating my head against the wall. Yesterday, I pretty much finished Christmas shopping and paid some bills. No big deal, right? Wrong, the puppy has a tear on her belly right by her leg. So it was surgery because the tear was fairly large. My vet said that the final bill is slightly over $300. I don’t have credit cards anymore and I don’t have the $300. My family is figuring out how to split the bill. Went to the vet this morning since we talked to our vet last night and said to bring her over and that’s what we did this morning. I wore Apres L’Ondee and it’s now faded and I don’t know what to wear right now.

Late today, busy day! I wore SL Clair de Musc because we had an office holiday breakfast and I thought this was low key and inoffensive. Not sure why I think my office might be scent intolerant (I don’t actually work in said office). My boss was wearing Coco Mad, another colleague Jessica McClintock (her signature), a third Narciso Rodriguez for Her, and the one guy, some Versace scent which had the most sillage of all. Yes, I asked everyone I could smell what they were wearing ?

SOTD = Diana Vreeland Daringly Different

DV is not a small company but since the name of the perfume begins with D’s, I am so claiming extra credit. Anyway, I pretty much fell in love with this at Sniffapalooza. Ask floragal…I kept smelling my arm during lunch. It is a deceptively simple perfume – Iris, rose, woody notes, Tonka, leather. Not one note dominated.

Speaking of DV, have you tried the body cream? I kid you not, this is one of the BEST body creams ever! It is very very lightly-scented and very emollient, quick absorbing. If you are saving for a luxurious body product, this is one to indulge in.

    Commuting Woes No. 617-619:
    – a woman reeking of alcohol came on board the train and proceeded to melt into a 3 seater. I was 1 row behind on the other side of the aisle. When the conductor came to collect tickets, she waved her wrist at him and said she just got out of the hospital and she needs medical attention. I guess this was not the conductor’s first rodeo and said why didn’t you tell me this on the platform. Also, if a passenger requests medical attention, a conductor is required to call it in which he did. I inwardly groaned because the train was already late and having been on one too many trains delayed by medical personnel, I knew it would take a while. The conductor then walked away to continue collecting tickets. When the train doors opened at the next stop, one of the passengers who must have seen her in action previously told her to leave now and quickly, which she did. As it turned out, she was just looking for a free ride from one station to another.

    – A woman encouraged someone to cheat on a fare by swiping her ticket at a mobility-impaired entrance and walking through together without fear of the barriers closing on them as they are designed to let bulkier people/equipment go through

    – I saw a police car flashing its lights by the traffic light behind my car and when it got through, the lights stopped flashing. As soon as it got near the next traffic light, it again flashed its lights and once through, the lights stopped flashing. Methinks there’s no emergency or it would have sirens blaring and lights flashing throughout. I hate it when law enforcement abuses its privelege!
