Monday scent of the day 12/3

Posted by Robin on 3 December 2018 234 Comments

It's Monday, again, and it's the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing the cheery Providence Perfume Co Tabac Citron, thanks to a very kind reader.

Reminder: on 12/7, pick your poison BWF...wear a perfume with tuberose, gardenia or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Jovoy Gardez-Moi which fits both last and this week projects – it’s a gardenia scent made by Bertrand Duchafour. For me, this is a white floral bouquet where gardenia leads. There are some green notes, but not as much as I expected from the pyramid. I do not get and spices or fruit from this perfume. Actually, all I can smell here is gardenia, jasmine and lily, plus something slightly green and watery. Gardez-Moi has a good balance of clean and heady white florals for me. Like it!

I want to do two weeks of gardenia and tuberose (with a weekend break), because I love BWFs and do not have any of four ‘D’ houses for the next week. Maybe I’ll wear something starting with D next Friday, but apart from that – nine days of tuberose and gardenia! That is, if I can, because there is such thing as a BWF overdose…

Preparing for this CP, I made a list of gardenia/tuberose perfumes I like:

    Givenchy Organza (gardenia&tuberose)
    Versace Blonde (gardenia&tuberose)
    Robert Piguet Fracas (gardenia&tuberose)

    Narciso (gardenia)
Elie Saab Essence No. 2 Gardenia (gardenia)
    Jovoy Gardez-Moi (gardenia) – done!

    By Kilian Beyond Love (tuberose)
    Frederic Malle Carnal Flower (tuberose)
    Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger (tuberose)
Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier (tuberose)
    Le Labo Lys 41 (tuberose)
    Tom Ford Shanghai Lily (tuberose)
    Dior Tendre Poison (tuberose)
L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons (tuberose)
    Joy (tuberose)

Very interested to see what other BWF lovers will wear. 🙂

Ah… Thank you! This is a rather self-indulgent CP for me – so these scents are mostly well-reviewed and well-known oldies and my favorites. (Although I have only recently discovered some of them.) So I’ll be praising everything I guess. But I do intend to write a few words on each of my SOTDs.

I’m in Terracotta Le Parfum which, while certainly big, contains neither of the approved white florals. (Jasmine, tiare, and orange blossom are the BWFs in this scent)

    Good morning Y’all…..

Fa-la-la-la-laing in Demeter Frankincense and Demeter Christmas Tree. I wish I could figure out where I’m smelled the sweet note in Christmas Tree before??? Candy? A candle? A person?

Smelly weekend: I trekked over to the Mall of GA (I only go a few times a year), and did my annual Lush haul. My 2 girls love to get a big ol’ bath bomb in their stocking, as well as some of the skincare items. I sure do love me some Lush! I couldn’t leave without buying What Would Love Do and Cardamon Coffee solid perfumes. They are gorgeous! Glad I don’t have a Lush closer to me…they get my money everytime! 🙂

I bought What Would Love Do in the solid a month ago. It’s terrific for something so simple, isn’t it? Some days you don’t want complicated and structured, you just want straightforward and accessible.

WWLD is AWESOME!! I wore it twice this weekend and was impressed how long it lasted on skin. Might have to spring for the bottle next time….

Cardamon Coffee is so light on my skin that I’m not sure it projects at all…but it’s very cozy and warm. I like it but don’t love it as much as WWLD….

I felt like wearing SL Chypre Rouge, the first Lutens I ever bought and for me kind of the echt-Lutens: slightly strange, completely unexpected, starting with fruit (in this case fruit-gums) and ending up warm and soothing. I love it so much.

I’m with you on this one (again! I seem to remember that you’re a Miel de Bois lover too?) In winter when it is cold and damp, Chypre Rouge makes me dream of Hansel and Gretel Houses and mythical forests.

Yeah, I love Miel de Bois recklessly. I have a real soft spot for the weird Lutenses: they’re so distinctively him they might as well have a signature on them.

“Mythical forest” is a great description of Chypre Rouge.

I am a fan of Chypre Rouge. It was, for me as well, an early Lutens, and represents much that made me fall in love with scent. Its funkiness is a major reason why I enjoy it so much – there’s a weird celery note, along with red hots, and then pine. Sounds awful, but it really works for me when I wear it, and does, as Amyitis points out, evoke an otherworldly forest.

Jolie Madame today. We had friends over for a board game party this weekend and I invited people to come early if they were interested in perfume show-and-tell, which was really fun, and I gave away a bunch of freebies too. So when I awoke this morning I had most of my favorites lined up on a shelf to pick from, which was a nice change from having to venture into their usual dark cool closet. I did have a tragedy a few days ago where I bumped the shelf and dropped a whole shoebox full! Everything was okay except the sprayer on my Moss Gown is wholly broken and a few spilled drops of Cabochard parfum. ALAS.

I’m in SSS Winter Woods on a pretty chilly morning! Brrr, I had snuggle up under my below 0 sleeping bag last night, and T-Rex is once again sporting her orange fleece. WW is the perfect scent for this weather, which I’m absolutely loving. I have so much more energy in cooler temperatures, which is good because I have a lot of running around to do today.

Called off sick today and will be emailing my agency because I have decided I. Am. Not. Going. Back!

Sometimes those are the exciting times, when you’ve decided that a door has closed, but you’re still waiting for the universe to take you to your next destination. I always feel wholly alive during those times.
Full disclosure: I also like arriving in a strange city where I don’t speak the language and making my way to where I need to be with public transport!

Maybe we would have been explorers/buccaneers in a different age! When I was little, I drove a friend crazy by always insisting we climb a tree and then pretend that it was a sailing vessel. I didn’t mind not being captain and having to climb the branches to “adjust the sails.” But it wasn’t really what my friend (a very girly girl) preferred to play. Now, in the 21st century, arriving in a city without checking various Apps and Google maps, counts as being adventurous!

I was a tree-climber as a kid, too. “My” tree was a big willow in our backyard. I would climb up as high as I could get and just hang out.

I have (almost) convinced my husband that figuring out how to navigate a foreign city’s transit system is part of the travel adventure.

Wearing L’Eau d”Hiver from Malle today.
It contains jasmine, but certainly not a BWF. I actually forgot to look at the community project his AM because I went out to start my car only to find it had been broken into. Nothing taken, but still made me flustered. I almost forgot to spritz before heading to work.

I recently moved ” in town” from a previously quite rural setting, so I guess I need to be a bit more vigilant re: security.
Still, nothing lost and no damage – I’ll take that as a win.

Glad there was nothing taken, but it kind of sucks, doesn’t it. My husband just left his car, parked and locked in a Walmart lot in Mississauga and ran in to pick something up. When he came back the car was gone and the police told him to check back the next day. Sure enough, it was back in another lot but with everything intact. Apparently someone just wanted to drive a BMW for the evening.

Just at home today, so fragrance free. Been meaning to post as I promised to let NST-ers know about my experience at the new Byredo shop & Floral Street company in London, so apologies for the fact I’ve been home for 2 weeks & not done so yet! Byredo very underwhelming, but that could have been down to the young lady who asked if I was aware of their products, when I said I was, was never seen again!, unlike another potential customer who was greet by a chap who started giving the person the history of the brand, which sounded very interesting indeed. Wouldn’t bother going back there. Floral Street was entirely the opposite – gorgeous shop with engaged & well informed staff – they have 8 fragrances, & we were asked if we had the time to learn about them, which we did, so got the breakdown of each one’s ingredients & the story of the business. My friend Marion (who I’ve mentioned on here before as becoming interested in fragrance because I’ve worn her down over many years of assorted trips!) loved the first two in the collection (they seem to range from light floral to more intense orientals) & was given samples of both, then bought two ‘discovery sets’ as Christmas gifts. Surprisingly, I was interested in the extreme other end of their offerings, which contains ylang ylang & espresso! I was given a sample but have yet to use it, but I am intrigued by my liking of it, as it’s so unlike what I usually go for. Would definitely pop in here again – a bonus is that’s in the Covent Garden/Seven Dials area, which is one of our favourites areas of London & within walking distance of Bloomsbury, which is our favourite area to stay in. Also, there’s a rather fab jewellery shop opposite, where I bought an absolutely beautiful pair of long, ‘dangly’ yellow gold & kyanite earrings! Earrings & perfume are definitely my thing, just as well I have the wherewithal to indulge in both!

BWFs are not my usual style, but I do crave them from time to time. Today I’m in a small white floral – Atelier Cologne Grand Neroli. Just right.

A question for BWF lovers – I recently got a sample of Child perfume, which I like, but I think is a bit overpriced for what it is. According to Fragrantica, Kuumba Made Pikake Lei is a close match. Has anybody tried both? What do you think?

I have a couple of extra samples of Child floating around. Ping me if you want them. emc dawt 7 1 1 7 in the land of geee-mail.

Child struck me as similar to Kai — same SoCal BWF thing — which I’d also classify as “a bit overpriced for what it is”.

I’ve been woken up by the HVAC people who came to give me an estimate on replacing my heater (I completely forgot they were coming). I can’t believe how expensive it is! And I hoped that the previous company was just greedy. Now I see that they were quite reasonable. But that price makes me want to wait until my current heater breaks completely, which I know isn’t a good idea. Grrrr!

On a positive note, yesterday I wore Amouage Epic and this morning, about 20 hours later, I can still smell it in my hair. So I should probably stay on Amouage theme and go with a tiny spritz of Dia hoping it won’t disturb much my perfume-sensitive co-worker.

In Civet because that was what I was in the mood for. . . it is one of the few vanilla-heavy scents that I really like. It also, as I understand it (because I certainly cannot parse it out among the notes), has tuberose in it. So voila.

Thanks everyone yesterday for your lovely notes about my self-created mess. I am still really annoyed at myself (so many challenges to parenting a child with special needs, the last thing I need is to indulge in losing my cool and giving his teachers an excuse to dismiss me).

Anyway, still on the subject of persons with disabilities, I heard a really interesting story on the radio this AM about a super group of doctors that work together to diagnose mystery diseases/rare incidence illnesses. (The story is also about a wonderful family that is coping with two children who have a degenerate condition–in case that sort of story is a trigger for you.) :

I missed your comments yesterday, so will chime in now. I don’t think you need to apologize for your email if your concerns were valid. You may email and apologize for the TONE of your email. I have an ongoing issue with my son’s school in that he is really behind in what he should already have achieved, and that is really due to his teachers’ -two for a class of sixteen -laissez faire attitude. This while we are paying private school tuition fees. The problem is that it is easier to be assertive and go to battle against people who are inflexible and steely eyed (read the head mistress). The source of my problems, the very kind, soft-hearted, but ultimately incompetent teacher, makes me feel boorish and like a bully. Such is life.

I hear you. In this instance, I actually think the spec ed teacher is quite bright, but is stubborn when it comes to doing something she hasn’t done before. And she has the unquestioning support of the principal. She will make a big show about something that takes two seconds and is not a big deal in front of folks who don’t know any better (ie submitting a form that shows that the parents were invited to a meeting). But in this instance, she needed to do a little research. Instead of doing the research, she spent 20 minutes explaining to me why what I was asking for was so much work, at the same time conveying to me completely incorrect information. Anyway, I know you understand! I am clearly not over it. And, this young woman has a talent for exaggerated passivity packaged as being “easy going.” So, I apologized. I have two and half more years at the school. Argggghhhh.

When my son was about seven years old, the child psychiatrist told me that God gave these kids to special mothers. (And this man was the absolute opposite of schmaltzy!) However, these are special kids too and my life has been immeasurably enriched.

Have you tried all of the EB scents? For some reason, I am haunted by the thought of Spanish Veil, but the company won’t ship to Canada, and the decantsites want $20.00 USD to ship anything here.

I have a hard time these days wearing woody scents as they tend to go sour to my nose (like Spanish Veil did.)

The others share a gorgeous dry, papery, woody base that I LOVE. I’m not sure others experience them the same way. They also have a certain rich decadence. Worth trying, hannahmom 😀

I am in La Douceur de Siam by Dusita, which according to Frangratica is a primarily “yellow floral” accord. I tried this in warmer weather and didn’t like it, but am enjoying it more in the cold although I think I like Fleurs de Lalita more, which I do think is a BWF.

    Happy Monday everyone!

I’m sure I’ve said this before but I see BWFs as mean girls on the playground – tuberose hates my guts and trash talks about me to gardenia who maybe kinda likes me, and I’m hanging out with incense, woods and thorny roses, acting like I don’t care 🙂
SOTD is En Voyage Zelda, so gorgeous and has magnolia so I feel I should get partial credit. I don’t mind about tuberose smelling like Eau de Wizard air freshener on me (yes, lower even than Glade) but I had a favorite aunt who wore Fracas and had a fur coat and always smelled so glamorous!

Thank you everyone for kind expressions of sympathy for my poor old cat Xena who went over the Rainbow Bridge on Friday. I returned home on Saturday and it was surprising how much I missed her gentle little presence here and there in the places she would occupy. I took her in along with her brother as fosters at age 10 when they came into the cat shelter after their owner killed himself. They were utterly terrified and it broke my heart. Of course, then after a year, I had to keep them. Gabriel died two years ago and Xena was almost 17. I have a lot of cats and have gone through many deaths but it’s still very hard.
On the subject of perfume, this morning I’m wearing some from my brand new bottle of Zoologist Camel. That one really snuck up on me and I found I was spraying from the sample all the time. This is my first FB from the company and I’m impressed by the packaging and really nice hefty bottle with its heavy cap and unusual shape. I’m still so stuffed up I can’t smell it properly but the smooth cinnamon rose is soft and appealing. I don’t get as much fruit from it as others seem to, so to me it’s less like an older Lutens than some find. It’s kind of buttery, even. I don’t at all think of myself as a fan of BWF’s but it turns out that I own several and love them, so this week will be fun. But have you ever had an actual tuberose bouquet in your house? There’s nothing worse!–except possibly stargazer lilies–they send me sneezing every time. Tuberoses just gag you!

I missed the news about your cat, but sending you hugs. Never easy.
And yes to the tuberose bouquet which I will always associate with a childhood friend’s mom who regularly had them in their home. She was a large, eccentric woman who drove a large white Lincoln town car and wore crazy huge hats and had a huge personality. So the tuberose bouquets fit her to a tee!

Oh I love love love fresh tuberose, star lily, jasmine, orange flowers, even paperwhites… No gagging… but I might have given myself a headache once or twice… 😉

So sorry about your kitty. I still really miss ours who “went over the rainbow” over a month ago. I’ll see a really big deer out back, or our new kitten will do something goofy, and I’ll start to wonder how our old cat would respond.

I don’t own any Zoologist fb’s, but Camel and Civet are my two favorites, and I am contemplating the next step in my relationship with both of them.

Woke up at 5:00 AM with a massive migraine for the first time in forever. Gosh it hurt so bad. I’ve managed to get it under control at least enough to come to work and get done what I have to get done. If I weren’t going to be off half the week anyway with my dad in town I wouldn’t have come at all, but I have a few things that really need to be done so here I am.

One little spritz of Twilly on my arm before I headed out the door. It’s just an “okay” for me. I do love that bottle though so I wish I loved it more.

Hi all, my SOTD is Caron’s Fleur de Rocaille – one of the few I managed to find in the 15-something boxes sitting around my new apartment! I didn’t realize it fit so neatly within the scent project!
It’s a favorite scent, with mimosa, jasmine, ylang ylang, gardenia, iris and lilac and a sandalwood/amber dry down.

The good news is only two boxes left to unpack, I managed not to dump SmokeyToes in the recycle bin, and I only got lost once coming to work from the new place. It’s all good! 😀

I like BWFs, but not sure if I can wear one every day this week. I am in Child today. It is really nice in warmer weather, and I have received compliments on it, with people sometimes wanting to know the name of the perfume I am wearing, who makes it, etc. Have to be careful, though, because it really is big. Today I’m going to see how it performs in cold weather.

Funny, but I think that BWFs are something you either love or hate from the start regardless of your knowledge of or previous experience with perfumes. After all, the concept of BWFs is fairly simple. Basically, it is a sensation of burying your face (or sometimes even having your face shoved 😀 ) in a bunch of white flowers. Some like it, some don’t. 🙂
On the other hand, I have always thought of classic chypres as scents for true perfumistas – they are complex, they unite contrasting notes, they do not go for photorealism and they develop and change over time.

R.I.P. President Bush. He was the epitome of public service and ascended to one of highest positions anyone could ever achieve in a lifetime! In 1990, he signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act.

SOTD = Le Labo Vanille 44

I’m 2 weeks early for the numbered fragrance community project. Non-gourmand incensey vanilla. Love!

I got my printer yesterday – HP OfficeJet 6958. It has all the features I was looking for, including good paper capacity, sheet feeder, ability to scan and print legal sized paper, separate cartridges for each color, scan to file / email. With my printing pattern and some concerns zi have about usage tracking, I decided not to go for the ink subscription service even though it is $ efficient. It also does not have a photo printing feature but I did not even once use that feature with my old printer which was in the photosmart line. It may be a tad slower but I don’t do volume printing anyway. I’ll let you know in 3 months how I feel about it. So far so good!

Well, I think that’s a shame. Dogs in the armed services got left behind and slaughtered after every war America was involved in. We consider animals to be disposable and reusable. I think all service animals deserve a happy and loving home in middle and old age.

SOTD Fille en Aiguilles, which reminded me a lot of Wazamba. So i tested this too. Fille is a bit sweeter und fruitier with a Church-like incense. Wazamba is a dry incense with fruit notes, mostly an apple note und a bit smokier. I dont think i will need both fragrances as they have a similar theme.
