Tuesday scent of the day 10/2

Posted by Robin on 2 October 2018 228 Comments

Monday's ugly little sister! Also, the International Day of Non-Violence and Sting's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada Infusion d'Iris Absolue. It smells good enough to wear two days in a row, plus, I'm running late and it was still sitting on my desk.

Reminder: 10/5 is International Teachers Day. Pick a fragrance that honors a teacher, in one way or another.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the tea items are from Royal Crown Derby's Steampunk collection.

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris edt

Robin wore the Absolue yesterday which reminded me it was one of my first perfume loves after finding NST a few years ago.

And ten sprays because it’s mah burfday! I have had enough birthdays that I tend to ignore them. But today I am marking the occasion by telling as many people as I can how grateful I am for the difference they have made in my life this past year. I am sending texts, emails, and making phone calls between teaching six 1st and 2nd grade music classes, tutoring after school, and teaching private piano students. I am grateful for my very musical life. Music has saved me.

NSTers, you darling People of the Perfume, my Sisters and Brothers in L’eau, you have made me smile every day this past year, just like every day since I found NST. Thank you!

Trigger Warning: mental health issues, feel free to skip, la la la, nothing to see here . . . Robin, if this post needs to be edited that’s ok with me.

I adore NST because of the perfume, the people, the sharing, and because sometimes we share a little bit (or a lot) more about our lives. It’s ok to look away here, don’t read, don’t comment, I respect that! Sometimes I can’t take on anything extra when I’m already drowning.

This past year has been one of the most difficult of my life, The only two that compare are the year that ended a 20 year relationship and the teen-age summer I spent mostly unconscious after a major reconstructive surgery.

In June a member of my family was involuntarily held in a mental hospital after becoming violent and suicidal. It was awful, horrible, nobody should go through this ever. It was terrible and yet we have come out on the other side stronger, though still struggling for the foreseeable future. But now that the issues are out in the open, everyone feels safer, and healing can begin.

I realized in June that my family and I had to have help. I shouted out to the world for help, and it came. Even though this past year has been dreadful, I have been given gifts of friendship, time, caring, support, and other resources I never dreamed of because I asked for help in quiet and loud ways.

I am a stoic and an introvert and a problem solver. I have too long believed that I can do everything alone. Nobody can go it alone. If you are suffering silently, living in quiet desperation, please look around and ask for help every day. Keep asking until it comes. It will come.

Until then, listen to loud music, sing along in the car, dance whether or not anyone is watching. Go to therapy even if you need it to take care of yourself or to help you be a better caregiver. Make art, learn the beauty of craft. Love someone, love yourself, love your pets, love someone else’s pets. Read, write, talk, text, reach out every day. And wear lots of perfume. It will feed your soul. It will feed mine too.

My email address is tiffanie darling attagirl geemayle dot com. If you ever want to talk, I’m here for you. 🙂

Dear tiffanie, Happy Birthday, and how wonderful that you’re feeling stronger now after everything you’ve gone through this year. I agree that in tough times we just can’t make it alone and it’s good you’ve reached out and found support. Thanks for your beautiful message.

Happy Birthday, Tiffanie! May this new year be filled with grace and joy and may you truly enjoy all the wonderful blessings that is available to us humans (and which you so eloquently listed)! It always amazes me that the things that give me the most joy are the simple things: the rustle of wind through leaves, a spot of sunshine on a cold day, the affection of a pet… And any teacher of small children deserves an extra hug and an extra special bottle of perfume!

Thanks for posting this, because there is a sad lack of support in western cultures for mental health issues. No one wants to talk about it, for less take action. Yesterday I went out for a bit of shopping and sampled SL Participe Passe. After spraying it on a paper strip, I swooned, and sprayed it on myself lavishly. This is going to be a definite FB very soon in my life! Artemisia, caramel, patchouli. Gorgeous stuff–not too sweet–I didn’t get that much fruit or cumin. WANT.

After an undergrad degree and an accounting designation, all done while working full-time, I am consciously evading formal structured education for the next few years ( at least)
Doesn’t stop me from taking community and private music lessons and studying several languages in my free time though – can’t evade a questing mind I guess.

Hiram Green Dilettante, a sample from the swap meet that I didn’t even ask for but that might turn out to be my favorite. It’s certainly my favorite orange blossom, which is not saying much because it’s not a note I love… except… maybe now I do after all?

I am doing (or at least I wil try to) this inktober-thing this month.
    31 days, 31 drawings.

There…i said it..now I feel even more motivated to do it 😉

I always wanted to draw more. But I am such a perfectionist and I always spend hours on a drawing. Inktober is a good way to learn to do quick sketches in short period of time.

Fille en aiguilles got me hooked on perfumes (again) a few years ago.
After a long period without perfume, i decided to try out some other brands than the usual stuff…I bumped into a Serge Lutens shelf in the department store, i tried Fille and fell in love! It is still one of my favourites.

I’d say they’re not even close. Tempo has none of the sweet, chocolaty Chanel richness that Coromandel does. I’ve not worn it in a while and I usually dab this one but today I sprayed and I’m smelling good to my nose but probably a bit much for my colleagues.

I saw a couple reviews on Fragrantica comparing them but to my nose they are similar only in so far that they both have patchouli. ????

Tempo is floral with the violet and Coromandel has the chocolate goodness.

Most all days now I wear two different perfumes usually from the same family or note to compare. For some, comparison is the thief of joy…like Facebook research suggests. ???? But for me and fragrance, comparison is joy. ????

It doesn’t have the baroque aura of POAL but the rose patchouli combo in RA is one of the best in the genre. In fact, the line is very much worth a sniff – I was asking Victoria if she had tried their Ylang-Ylang and she replied she liked it as it reminded her of Aqua Allegoria Ylang-Vanille.

Robin, do you have a crystal ball? These last few days, I had been perusing steampunk jewelry, specifically owls. If I can make it myself, it’s not worth buying. Many have the pre-fab owl base and then gears and what not layered on.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

It is PERFECT everyday, specially on a day that doesn’t know what it wants to be. Come on fall, stick to it, OK. There is no need to bring summer back. Seriously!

Questions for hikers and/or trail runners: what is your favorite model of hiking boots and/or trail shoes and why? If you don’t have a recommendation but have a horror story as to what to avoid, do tell! Thank you.

Question about flood insurance (and please email me privately if you think it’s better). I always thought my homeowner’s insurance included flood insurance. Since we’re on higher ground, it’s generally not a concern; however, these days, unexpected things could happen. Thoughts on your experience with flood insurance (general cost and coverage).

My admittedly limited understanding of the homeowner’s insurance we have is that flood insurance is not included. We are also on high ground and not near any bodies of water. But if you have a laundry room that is on an upper floor of your house, then maybe flood insurance is worth looking into.

Thanks, lillyjo. I should also mention that I am not near any body of water either (like jalapeño) but be that as it may, with the weather patterns, the ground could get so saturated that the water will have nowhere to go.

Hmmm, in Florida there are areas zoned as flood zones and separate flood insurance is mandatory. It’s exorbitant. In non-flood zones, it optional but equally as expensive. Flood insurance does not cover any other water damage other than “flood damage.” So, if your roof leaks, or gets blown off in a hurricane, flood insurance does not cover the damages. If your pipes burst and your home floods, it’s not covered. I think it only covers damages from a documented flood (ie: rivers rising over their banks, storm surges, tsunamis, etc). It’s very tricky, very expensive (at least in Florida) and the window of coverage is quite small. YMMV in NYC.

Rainy day today, and wearing some Dusita Erawan as I have run out of my Issara sample and they share a (very) similar base. There was a note that I couldn’t parse out, and I think it’s a combination of coumarin and chocolate, which gives it a gourmandy feel.

Hay is the best, isn’t it? I LOVE Issara and it is firmly at the top of my FB list. Hoping that after I achieve some personal goals I will finally feel OK about spending the $$$.

Erawan is worth trying out, but it is a bit of an oddball. For me it shifts between green-herbaceous to vanilla-chocolate gourmand. I am hoping to try St. Claire’s First Cut in the near future (Jessica reviewed early this year).

Isn’t that amazing! I once had to see an MD (a specialist) for a number of visits related to a specific injury. I don’t think he wore any cologne or perfume per sé, but he smelled so good I had a hard time focusing. Literally. Then he open his mouth and spoke and his voice just about threw me over the edge. It was very disconcerting and I had to really rein my libido in and was relieved when my injury was resolved and required no further visits. So ODD ????.

Ha! I’ll get around to it one of these days. Hendley Mown is also a photorealistic hay, damp earth scent. Almost too much for me to wear, though, but very autumnal.

Huh. Aroma M Geisha Violet sounds similar in the green violet leaf/ chocolate theme, though it smells unsweetened and more like mud so not really gourmand. Which makes me even More curious about Erawan. Ugh. I was so good about not buying samples for the past year…

Wearing Masque Milano Terralba from a swap meet decant. Really nice, easy to wear aromatic, herbal, woody perfume.

I’ve also fallen for MM Hemingway, a very well done straightforward vetiver. The only MM I have yet to try is Luci ed Ombre, and I have a fresh sample of that from a Twisted Lily order that arrived last week. I think I’ll try it out tonight! I think MM is one of my favorite recent niche brands. Times Square, Russian Tea, and Montecristo were not for me but were well made. I’ve pretty much loved every other of theirs. That’s a pretty good success rate.

I’ve just bought Hemingway for my partner so that I can steal it; your description is spot-on. I also own Times Square (didn’t think it was my thing, but am addicted) and Russian Tea and would gladly own L’Attesa, Mandala and Romanza as well. An excellent line. I need to remind myself what Terralba smells like.

Paloma Picasso… My husband said it smelled “fresh”, ???? last year when I wear this someone told me I smelled “clean” – we discussed in here and maybe thought people are searching for something to say when they notice your perfume – and “clean” is a positive adjective

I smell like burnt rubber and motor oil as a beautiful complex floral. I imagine the wife of a mechanic sitting in the office doing bookkeeping work – she’s wearing a floral and it’s mixing with the body shop scents

I’m wearing Misia today, it’s really beautiful. I’m also back from the Bay Area and the Midwest is really starting to look and smell like fall, although it’s warm and humid today. The sassafras trees in my neighborhood are starting to turn! This is my first time experiencing autumn in five years so I’m pretty excited.

Balenciaga le Dix today, on a surprisingly sunny day! It was supposed to rain yesterday AND today, and ended up merely being a tad overcast yesterday.

I saw Jessie J last night!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE HER. She is such a spectacular singer and an amazing performer. She’s funny and touching and personable, and her voice is just so EFFORTLESS AHHHHHH. She’s really inspired me to work harder on my solo vocal work and my songwriting.

Go listen!!! Even if you don’t end up liking her music, I am certain you’ll be dazzled by her voice. I bet you’ll find you’ve heard some of her music ambiently anyway. But yes, it was wonderful to be inspired by her musicianship and humanity!

I admire your ability to ID perfumes on the street. My poor little brain can only come up with “good,” “bad,” and “ick.” Do you ever approach people to ask if you’re unable to identify, or is that a no-no in NYC?

I’ve asked, but depends on the context. I haven’t quite chased anyone down the street to ask, but I would if it were fabulous and I had to know.
I once got off the bus in the morning and a guy in front of me had a delicious trail, so I did ask him- and it turned out he was the home hospice doc I worked with!???? It was an Acqua di Parma scent.

My first thought was “pickled woods” and then I realized that the dill thing is why I don’t like it. It’s gotta be their most popular scent. But there are smell-alikes now! I’ve mistaken Commodity Book and JHAG Sunnyside Up for Santal.

I’m wearing Une Rose Chypree, sort of in honor of Andy’s new Rose candle, but really because I wanted to wear Une Rose Chypree.
I went to the symphony last night and met the season ticket holders I’ll be sitting next to until May. The woman seemed very nice and I’ll bet I could wear a bit of perfume and she wouldn’t object.

Went pawing through the perfume cabinet this morning, and came up with Rich Hippie Maharishi. It’s making me very happy today – I smell like the love child of a field of wildflowers and a bowl of buttered popcorn. It’s quite cheerful.

OJ Frangipani, which I haven’t worn as much this summer as in the past. Warm and humid here, so it seemed like a good idea. It had likely faded by the time I got on the bus….which was so crowded there was a guy up by the front door with a walker – he couldn’t even get to a seat. A man with a cane was by the second door… next bus wasn’t for 15 minutes…

Tuesday movie was A Simple Favor. A hoot. Well played by Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

Hmmm, did they change it on the iPhone too? It could just be me but I somehow lately keep getting @ when I meant to type an apostrophe. My device of choice is my iPad mini which does not get updates anymore….I really should bring it in to the store and get them to update it…. Unless it is so old that the OS is obsolete and the device is not capable of taking on new updates.

Yikes, I am late today! It WAS Monday’s ugly little sister for me. Wondering if Mr. Jalapeno is coming down with some kind of crud… he came home earlier than usual and said that he wasn’t feeling well. ????

SOTD = Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin, from the sample/decant stash and a generous NSTer. I’m liking it quite a bit, especially the dry down which kind of has a salty skin vibe to me. It smells like I’ve been at the beach today. ⛱????
