Tuesday scent of the day 9/25

Posted by Robin on 25 September 2018 254 Comments

Happy National Comic Book Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying to wake up with Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret (boy, do I smell good) and a cup of double-strong English Breakfast.

Reminder: on 9/28, wear a fragrance by Byredo, Berdoues or Bruno Fazzolari, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter B.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Comic Book Tea Mug is £7.99 at Gift Republic.

I like it a lot…the herbal tomato vineness of it… but longevity is an issue so probably no to a full bottle. The only one I really want is Paprika Brasil but that may change three weeks from now LOL ???? ????

the rest of my week will be B for Buchanan…as in Jessica September Buchanan because my bottle of Reglisse Noire has arrived!!!!!! She also included a travel spray of Rose Cassis (love it!!! someone on APJ says it smells like Rose Jam which I have never smelled before but this is a gorgeous jammy sweet rose…I will really enjoy it in the spring) and a sample of Orange Blossom Petal (love that too).

Morning! This picture is perfect for my SOTD as I am wearing my newly swapped-for Tea for Two!

Also want to tell you all that I tried Tyrannosaurus Rex last night and really liked it. Still trying to figure out the top, but it has a wonderful smoky incense and leather drydown that lasts forever, like what your hair would smell like after a night at a campfire where someone had doused all the logs in Diorling.

    Hello all!

I’m in Aimez Moi today. I really like it, but it reminds me of Yvresse. And I love Yvresse, so now I wish I was wearing that.

It’s only my first full wearing of it though so maybe I’ll change my mind. 🙂

Good Morning….when I saw the tea mug I thought you had a bunch of “tea” to spill. I think I’ve been watching too much You Tube.

I see Bruno Fazzolari is getting his new scent ready. Can’t wait. If you order from his site, you get a nice sample of the upcoming release. It seems BF is also rebranding. I DM’d him on Insta and he is super nice and super helpful. I have a perfume crush.

I think that word is considered by many Romani people to be a slur, so maybe not as cool as it sounds. :/

Not that I’m surprised that in our time of over-sensitivity and getting offended by virtually anything something might be considered a slur, but I’m curious why? What part of this name is offensive? I tried googling and can’t find anything that would explain it to me.

          • Elisa P says:

A friend of mine worked for a genocide prevention org and spent time in Eastern Europe in dialogue with currently oppressed people, so I’ve heard a good deal from him about the Romani people. The term “gypsy” was given to them by others who erroneously thought they originated in Egypt, and when a name is given to a people by others who consider them outsiders or undesirables, it becomes a term of offense, along with the negative stereotypes attached to it. There’s nothing inherent in the word itself that is offensive, it’s how it became applied that is problematic (rooted in xenophobia).

        • lillyjo says:
          25 September 2018 at 1:44 pm

Wasn’t aware of that. Every time I hear the word, I think of Gypsies, tramps and thieves, by Cher. So, really, its just Cher that’s cool. Wish she would try her hand at perfume again.

It’s a sensitive issue, indeed. Byredo’s website says the scent is ‘a glamorisation of the Romani lifestyle’ and ‘fascinated by the myth’. The idea is obviously to convey a romantic, carefree life in the outdoors, rather than offend anyone (‘Romani Water’ doesn’t quite have the same associations), but I’m not convinced Romani people find it amusing. I’m pretty sure Byredo would not pick the same name in 2018, now that the awareness is spreading.

Anyway, back to the scent: it’s perfectly nice, but I want it to be more intense. After all this talk of campfires and fresh soil, I think it’s rather tame.

Byredo has been known to change perfume names (for example, Fantastic Man became Sunday Cologne) but perhaps, this is selling quite well that to change the name may impact sales.

SotD1 = Tam Dao dabbed on wrists
SotD2 = Eau des Merveilles sprayed inner elbows
    SotD3 = Cologne du 68 all over

    LOVE THAT MUG!

Sprayed Cd68 at 3 am when I couldn’t sleep, absent-mindedly grabbed EdM as I dressed this morning, then saw my sample of Tam Dao and thought why not?

So I’m inadvertently reeking havoc this morning, pulled a Holly I guess, and it really works. I smell like an expensive furniture store with lots of polished wood where someone has been eating oranges and madeleines. 😀

Maybe my scent cloud will make someone happy at work today. Better living through profligate perfuming!

I’ll second that. I can’t count the OT that I’ve been forced to work due to software updates. Wish they’d leave it the “bleep” alone! I hate being at the mercy of these companies. The SEs should be forced to work with their own software before shoving the changes down their client’s throats. They NEVER test the changes thoroughly. So sick of it, especially since most of what I do is time sensitive and deadlines.

I was feeling under the weather last night and went to bed at 8:30pm. Woke up this morning and made a strong cup of Chai tea with huge amount of fresh ginger and I am feeling right again.

SOTD is Moulin Rouge by Histoires de Parfums and listening to the Gipsy Kings. I smell like Tangerine, Absinthe, & Iris

The Best Lentil Salad turned out great yesterday, I added feta cheese, olives, cucumbers, arugula and tomatoes to the lentils. The dressing is amazing. Thanks again to whomever posted the recipe. When I have coconut milk I will make the other dish that was mentioned.

Yes, but when you spray it the opening is not that great, just give it a minute to settle. My favorite part is about 20 minutes after I spray it. Its a close to skin scent

I got the Berdoues sampler! I’ve been doing brown bag lunches for a few weeks so I told myself I earned it.

Last night I did a tiny spray of Selva do Brazil, which was charming. Today I took Koyel’s suggestion for Russkaya Kozha. I don’t usually think of leather perfumes but this one is soft and cozy.

What distinguishes a Russian leather as opposed to a regular old leather?

Russian leather usually means leather tanned using birch tar.

Must be very naughty leather to need to be tanned with birch tar. It hardly sounds work-appropriate.

Yes — Russians used birch to tan / waterproof the leather, so most perfumes advertising Russian leather will make the scent a little smokier / earthier. But Bear is right, there are no rules!

No Bruno Fazzolari scents in my wardrobe. I have one Berdoues (you can probably guess which) and two Byredo perfumes.

But since Robin accepts BOIS 1920, I am wearing another scent of this house, Vento nel Vento. It’s a pleasant oriental.

      Hi Glannys
May I ask which Bois 1920 you prefer? There is a shop here that sells them at quite good prices, but they don’t have testers and I try not to buy unsniffed. However, it seems most people say that the line has well made fragrances from good quality ingredients. I don’t like vanilla or heavy ambers. Is there one you can recommend?

        Hi Amyitis.
I am afraid I am far from being an expert on this house. I have only tried three of their scents.
Oltremare is definitely my favorite, because for me it is an aquatic that does not smell cheap. It is a nice blend of water and vegetal notes which reminds me a little of watermelon rind. Not sure it’s a safe blind buy though. You have to like juicy watey notes to appreciate it, because it’s all about them.
Vento nel Vento is okay, but eventually I’d say it’s not for me. It’s not a heavy scent, but I think it has amber-vanilla you dislike in the dry-down. I actually like vanilla, but this one reminds me of a cookie dough (plus pepper). I like the top notes – soft resins – but I cannot help thinking they are not very memorable or original.
The third one I tried is Sutra Ylang. It was several years ago, so I do not remember it very well, but I definitely did not like it and was really disappointed by it.

I’ve just remembered that I tried Sandalo e The too. It was a tiny one-use sample. A lovely fresh woody scent (tea was definitely noticeable), nice to wear on a rainy summer day. My only problem with it was that maybe it had too much caraway. But it was one rather short test.

Frankly, if I were you, I would try to get samples from another source instead of buying these scents unsniffed.

Gray and rainy here. Last night walking home from a class was the first time in a very long time that I felt slightly chilly. (Not counting that one day/evening in San Francisco in August). It felt like Fall!! Woo hoo!

I guess I’m in the neighborhood of the CP by wearing Boyfriend. Did a blind buy of the travel rollerball at the most recent launch. Kind of a waste, since it’s so close to Angel Muse. Seems to dry down a bit lighter.

Keep waiting for a moment to enjoy getting caught up on NST, and it just isn’t happening! But wanted to pop in to brag that I have my first full bottle empty in goodness knows how long— Chanel No 19 Poudre. The last dregs are scenting my office . . . I will not be replacing this one. Since my perfume peregrination began I have slowly fallen out of love with my greener frags . . . not something I expected, but individuals change over time and relationships evolve, and well, sometimes people fall out of love . . . guess you could say we’ve taken separate paths, me and green.

    How’s that for thunk?!

That’s no ordinary thunk, that’s a THUNK!!! With extra exclamation marks no less.

Totally agree on perfume tastes evolving. I like some notes now that were “NO thanks” when I first started seriously sniffing.

I’m twins with Robin today in Feu Secret. I thunked my sample and will move on to using my decant.

It’s already been an eventful morning. While I was getting ready for work, I heard sirens but didn’t look outside. So when I walked out my apartment building’s front door to go to work, I saw a fire truck parked on our hill towards the bottom with the hose extended through a bike and pedestrian trail that starts right there. And of course my car was parked in one of three spots next to where the trail begins and was blocked in by the fire truck, hose, and an ambulance. No one was to be found, so I went back up to my apartment to wait. About 40 min later I was able to leave after talking with a couple firemen. They moved the ambulance and ended up unplugging the hose from the fire truck and moving it from behind my car, so I could get out. Some really nice guys! The fire was in a vacant house that is off the trail. Some homeless people were living there and that’s how it caught on fire. From what I gathered there were no injuries.

    SOTD: Seville a l’Aube

Got up at 6 am, went back to bed at 8 am, got up again at 11 am and now working. Yesterday I had a one day trip to Atlanta that completely knocked me out. I don’t know how people do daily flights to cities as part of their job… between waiting on lines, the stress of taking off and landing, cabs, and bad food options, not an easy job.

    Now for more coffee!

Oy! I’m glad my work does not require me to have to travel by plane to/from on the same day. Back when I had to do that, I was much much much younger but it still bit me in the behind the next day. The worst was doing four of these within 6 weeks, not including two overnight trips – that was CRAZY. Of course the worst was when the delay took longer than the actual flight.

I have been hankering after bottles of both Au Dela Narcisse and Lampblack since I got my paws on samples. I’m almost afraid to try them again in case I accidentally (ahem) wave my bank card in the wrong/right direction…

So I wore some vintage Miss Dior parfum and EDT today, instead and smelled pretty great. But I also thought about those two Bruno Fazzolari scents some more. Damn it.

Patches of snow on the hill tops this morning. In the last few days the wild violets have started flowering up on the hill, clinging to the banks either side of the tracks. Back in the 50s a hermit named Ben Rudd took up residence in a shack on the hills and planted rhododendrons which are now flowering and looking beautiful. Off to the graveyard for my walk as it is more sheltered in this wind. The founder of our botanic gardens is buried there and ( although it is crazy behaviour) I give him daily updates on the trees and flowers ( the cemetry borders the gardens)…today it will be Tarata ( lemonwood): the gum used by Maori for perfume…in full flower now. Wearing Fiele Viola.

    SOTD = Bruno Fazzolari Fontevraud

I at first thought that I was sniffing the “potpourri run amok” smell of the Uber I took yesterday (I swear the driver must have SOAKED the seat right before he picked me up because the pants I wore REEKED of the hot mess but no more since I did laundry today), but no, it was a combination of Smarties with rose & patchouli that I smelled and as time went on, the oppoponax came out smelling like iris.

Smelled in the wild while I was in DC: Chanel No. 5, Box of Eels and Angel (lots of it to leave a taste in my mouth).

Can yellow cabs be any color than yellow? Yes – in DC, they are pink and white…I suppose, to mimic the colors of cherry blossoms.

Usually, by the time I come back from vacation, I already have the next trip booked. I have found that the most efficient thing to do is to replenish the toiletries / make-up (and their back-ups for the carry-on) I will be using during the next trip so that the packing for the next trip would be much easier without running around at the last minute. This also allows me to rotate out items I can finish off quickly while at home and to freshen the toiletries (as they do have a shelf life). I’m on the lookout for a new lighter weight 24″ (for the 3-4 day trips) as the one I have is heavy even when empty and the wheels aren’t swiveling smoothly anymore.

It’s back to work for me tomorrow and I am looking forward to it (no, I am not crazy, just someone who generally enjoys her work and most of her co-workers…something has to make up for the Commuting Woes).

The size I was going for would not qualify for a carry on. Come to think of it, I can’t remember the last time I used a wheelie carry-on and it could be because it is old enough to have the non-swiveling wheels. In any case, I may be better off buying a full set of luggage. I know I want the hard-sided without the built-in TSA lock and not black.

Would it be overly indulgent to say I already booked the next 3? Since it’s late perhaps only a few people will see this. Late December / early January – Lisbon, March – Tampa / St. Pete / Sarasota, May – Italy (Amalfi to Sorrento). The May trip is a walking tour and will be very active as we’re basically walking anywhere from 5-8 miles everyday over all sorts of terrain; I figured preparing for this will probably cause me to lose 10-15 pounds which is a nice bonus.

I want to travel while I still can. I’ve heard too many people say they will travel once they retire, but, sadly for some, they end up not being able to for various reasons.
