Monday scent of the day 9/24

Posted by Robin on 24 September 2018 303 Comments

Monday, and the start of International Week of Happiness at Work. Birthdays today: Jim Henson, F Scott Fitzgerald. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with the elephants: Berdoues Assam of India.

Reminder: on 9/28, wear a fragrance by Byredo, Berdoues or Bruno Fazzolari, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter B.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Boy, will my coworkers be glad it’s the start of International Week of Happiness at Work. 😛 SOTD for me is FM Eau de Magnolia, in the hope that it will bring out the sun.

    cute elephant!!!

wearing Samsara. I’m finding it a good comfort scent. It’s powerful but not overpowering on me, but it sounds like it is on many people. I don’t get an overdose of sandalwood, it’s more rosy-woody-powder on me.

I sort of reminds me of tresor in it’s strength and rosiness, but maybe swap out the peach with woodsiness?

the reviews make me think of Samsara like a legitimate royal cousin who is invited to all the royal gatherings – she has the pedigree and you can’t deny she has certain charms, but everyone really loves cinderella, or something like that, ha. In the opposite vein it also reminds me of Pretty in Pink – you like a perfume, but are a little embarrassed to bring her to the party. I like it in the same way I like Classique.

I do see how the name could be seen as ridiculous in that it apparently refers to the cycle of human suffering from worldly attachments (i think), but maybe not more ridiculous than many other perfumes and perfume copy. Since it is a religious term it makes me wonder what I would think of a perfume named “purgatory”, “penance”, “venial sin”, ha ha

    Hello everyone!

I’m in a weird one for me, vintage Heritage by Guerlain. Something about it is so 90’s business man that it’s a weird fit for my strangely patterned shirts and colored jeans. But that dissonance is pretty fun, too. I’m enjoying it but it fades a bit quickly on me. Oh well. 🙂

I know, I know, I haven’t been around for ages – work, life, blog, etc… But I’ve been missing NST so bad recently and writing about perfume over the weekend only made it worse. I’m so glad Scent of the Day is still going strong!

I’m wearing my newest perfume, Old Money by Teresa Helbig. It is mostly a transparent fig-and-vetiver scent on me, but I also get cardamom, sweet plums and leather. I think it’s fantastic: understated, classy and easy to like. I sprayed all my colleagues with it last week and everybody loved it. I had never heard about the brand until I saw it in one of the Brussels boutiques – Teresa Helbig is a Spanish fashion house that has a small line of perfumes (four altogether) as well. If you see the fragrances somewhere, I highly recommend giving them a sniff. Also, how good is that name?

Thank you! Nowhere that special: I had a temporary job that was wonderful, but insane even by my standards (working 36 hours straight, negotiating through the night, then having a 7am press conference, that sort of thing). So I had to give up many nice things for a while. No regrets, but I do enjoy having a little bit more time for myself.

You know, some of BF’s fragrances end up really quiet on me, like I’m not smelling the whole fragrance, which makes me wonder if he uses some material I’m anosmic too, but I’m getting a quiet citrusy musky vetiver, and vetivers are probably the only fragrance category I totally don’t care about. I defer to Robin on this one!

Twins with Robin in Assam! I like this one a lot, though my true love from this line is Selva do Brazil.

I spent the weekend ignoring the news cycle and reading the beauty blog Into the Gloss. The photos of their interview subjects’ perfume collections often obscure the labels a bit (grrr) but hip young people seem to love Byredo, Chanel, Jo Malone, and Tom Ford the most. And they alllll have Diptyque candles . . .

I need to try Assam of India since it gets so much love here – I see that Sephora has a handy travel spray (no affiliation) so that, coupled with their return policy if I don’t like it, could be the way to go…
In Gallivant Istanbul again today – it got lots of compliments at the baby bday bash yesterday and I got requests for samples – yay

To be clear, my love is 75% elephants, 25% juice. That is, the juice is just fine, indeed a very enjoyable summer citrus tea, but it is nothing I would buy in a plain glass bottle, and in fact I would not even buy the travel spray because it lacks elephants.

Possibly many people here like it better than I do.

I have a decant of Assam of India, so I don’t get to see the lovely little elephants, but I still love it 🙂 So it might be worth it for you even without the bottle appeal!

I’ve had two samples, Panorama and Close Up. Both are good, Panorama with a wasabi note and Close Up green coffee. I personally liked Panorama better and it is on my wishlist of sorts. It is quirky and wears easily and I didn’t get bored with it either. Close Up is also good, just not as interesting (for me). I tried Lumiere Blanche in store and though that is the one getting the most love on the blogs, it smelled exactly like coconut milk on me.

I love both Panorama and Lumiere Blanche, the latter is my comfort scent (I get almond and cardamom rather than coconut from it). I think everything they do is good quality, although the pace of releases has sped up a bit too much recently for my liking. I have tried Woody Mood as well, but I must admit I don’t remember much. So I’d say that the entire line is worth a sniff, but not necessarily a blind buy…

You smell elegant and understated in modern Diorling, it’s one of my loves and I rarely see it mentioned. I get a bit of incense in the drydown and I think it’s a lovely twist. Is the vintage very different?

The modern version is spicy and boatloads of pepper with a little bit of pepper. The vintage isn’t as spicy, loads of leather and definitely smells like a chypre, the modern mostly doesn’t smell a whole lot like a chypre.

Fitzgerald!!!!!! He was my favorite author growing up. He might still be. He’s the beautiful epitome of form over function–deep down, I’m a superficial girl. His grave in Rockville, MD is near my parents’ house, and for several years in high school and even into college, a friend and I would lay flowers on his grave on his birthday and stand above him reading particularly beautiful passages of poetry or prose.

Robin, I’m joining you in the elephants! I gave myself a thorough dousing in Assam of India this morning (no joke, at least eight sprays), but of course it’s already died down to a whisper about 1.5 h after I put it on. Ah well, beauty can be so ephemeral.

I should be wearing Assam given that it earned me about 10 enabler pins when I wore it seven weeks straight. But I am not. Instead in Santal Massoia. Lasts a nano second…same with Ambre Nargille which I wore last night. Thunk to both. Santal on my skin and my two samples of Ambre will be going to a dear friend of mine.

I thought I knew where my Bal d’Afrique was, but it wasn’t where I went looking this morning. But I did find my Seven Veils (Byredo) decant, so I’m happily wearing that. It doesn’t get much love, but it’s actually in my top 3 from Byredo of what I’ve smelled from them. My other two faves are BdA and Pulp.

Oh, and it’s definitely Monday. I woke up with a very dry eye and then was cranky with all the other cars on my way to work. I had a very nice, relaxing weekend, so I seem to be rejecting this Monday business. Over the weekend I wore my beloved L’air de Rien, a fall transitional favorite, and tried Eris Mx, Grandiflora Boronia, and Slumberhouse New Sibet. Boronia was the one that didn’t really do anything for me, and I also gave Zoologist Camel another try. I love the opening, but it really bores me as it gets into the dry down. So it will get passed on to someone else in hopes it excites them more than me.

From Sylvaine Delacourte, trying Helicriss and Virgile today.

Liking Virgile. I’ve enjoyed all the vanillas so far. They offer a mix and match coffret with .25 sprays on the website which is tempting me. No affiliation. I think you can pick 7 different ones between the musks and vanillas for around $100 which is calling my name. *faintly hears…She-ra…She-ra…* we all hear what we want to hear I suppose. ????

It has been so dark and gloomy since this morning I had to switch the lights on in my place. Leaves on the trees are slowly turning yellow and the air smells like fall.
I went with Amouage Interlude today- a great transitional scent, IMHO. Other scents I will be wearing a lot this fall are: Marni Marni, L’Ambre des Merveilles, Eau Claire des Merveilles, Tom Ford Sahara Noir, Ann Gerard Cuir de Nacre and Rose Cut, SL Bas de Soie and many more 🙂
I stopped at Macys over weekend and ordered Chanel No 5 L’Eau with 15% off discount (they didn’t have 1.2 oz. bottles in the store, so SA had to order one for me). Waiting for my new bottle in the mail IMPATIENTLY!

I’m sampling Donna Karan Signature today. I swapped away my Gold a long time ago and Black Cashmere has never impressed me. This one is a lot sweeter than I expected from the notes and is quite powdery. I’m getting the message that DK is not ever going to be a favorite house.

Nor mine, although I do love BC and “really like” Gold, and would buy some of her older men’s if they were still on the market. But none of the other modern stuff, or the DKNY stuff, has been appealing.

As mentioned earlier, I’m in Bal d’Afrique from a sample. Will keep dabbing, but I’m sneezing like mad today for some reason. I’ve been struggling with allergies the past few days….

And…I’m struggling with the new keyboard outline from my iPhone update. They flipped the “123” key with the “world” key that switches me to different language or emoji keyboards. I keep hitting the world one and ending up in France instead of just finding the @ sign or “”. Between that and the update to my bus app that eliminated clicking to find connecting lines, I am grrrring… Does everything have to be improved??? And do the cats have to throw up hairballs in the exact spot where they know I will be stepping in my bare feet?

Rewinding back to Friday. Peace and Gratitude. ????????????????????

When we lived in an apartment that was almost all hardwood except for two rugs (one in the bathroom, one in front of the patio), the cats invariably RAN to the rugs SPECIFICALLY to throw up on the harder-to-clean surfaces. Ugh. Just once, I wish they’d throw up on a surface that only requires a thorough wiping/disinfecting.

I am having the same issue with the location of those symbols on my iPhone and iPad post update. In the beginning I thought I was having a mild stroke as I was repeatedly hitting “the correct button” but getting different results until it finally clicked. I am still hoping that was an unintentional switch and the next update will bring back the old keyboard arrangement (I am not cranky about at all ????)

I’m in Habit Rouge. Trying to THUNK! my bottle, though I don’t see it happening soon.

I have about half left, so I will probably offer it up this weekend as a freebie. I enjoy it but not nearly as much as I used to. I figure might as well make room for stuff I like more. I’m pretty minimalist in every day life- trying to be more like that with my perfume life as well ha!

My first thought: “Hmmmm I’d better get my trigger finger ready to try to call dibs on that.”

My second thought: “Huh, she has a great point about minimalism and prioritization. Ugh, I hate it when the rational thing to do is NOT to acquire more perfume.”

    Such a lovely, cute picture!

I really doubt there is a single moment of happiness at work. Everybody is cranky most of the time, especially on Mondays!

Wearing Calvin Klein Euphoria. A forgotten friend that does not get much love these days from anyone, but I always enjoy wearing it in fall.

Beautiful day today! Sunny, cool and the trees started turning yellow already. What a sense of comfort!

You smell great! Euphoria was the first perfume I fell in love with – but before I got into perfumes as a hobby. My parents got me a set of Calvin Klein mini bottles for christmas when I was a teenager. (I wore Euphoria to prom!) I remember being so amazed by how much the scent changed between the time I first sprayed it on, to the next day when I could still smell it on my wrists.

Thank you! Euphoria was one of my perfume loves long time ago. I still enjoy it, but many others are priority these days. I remember the mini set with Euphoria, Obsession, Eternity, CK2 and Escape. I treasured and loved those minis for many years, especially Obsession which is still one of my big favorite perfumes! So many memories!

Oh yes it does!!! My first bottle almost 50 years ago was an Avon. Back in those days they had some glorious fragrances that would definitely stand up or even surpass the niche that is being churned out today …and they were a fraction of the cost!

Monday. Happiness at Work week? Are they kidding?

It took an hour and a half to drop of my car this morning to get its windshield replaced.

    I forgot about ‘B’ week.

I ran out of unscented body lotion.

    Had insomnia last night.

Heat wave scheduled for this week.

SOTD is Un Jardin en Mediterranae body lotion, which is pretty scenty. At least I smell good.

    Late to this!

    Happy Monday!

    1) Am in Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, over Frankincense and Myrrh soap by Nubian Naturals. Very fresh and light yet warm and grounding. Perfect for a chilly morning with a warm afternoon.

    2) I am at heart a rather sanguine person. It’s great to have a International Week of Happiness. I think that we focus so much on our difficulties that many people do not realize the good things they have. Not to be a Pollyanna, of course, but we should realize the good in life and how we can, despite our troubles, try to enjoy a bit of life. We should take care of each other.

Hey lady! You look so beautiful on your blog!

The soap is a ethnic founded brand here in the US, and they use high quality natural oils and really fragrant essences. The soap is well milled SO it makes a beautiful snowy white lather, lasts a long time and smells great. I think this brand is owned by Sundial now and may be available in Sweden.

I think that Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere is just available in the US for NOW but let me know if you want a sample in Belgium.

Now we’ll sit for 5 hours listening to IVs beep and click. Big shout out to all of my fellow nurses on NST (the staff here at UCSF has been kind and responsive)–when you’re having a tough day please remember how much good you do and how much your kindness is appreciated by both patients and family members!

Started knitting my first shawl last night. Then restarted it 6 times, with 2 different yarns. Can’t get past the 8th row without messing up my stitch count! Somehow ending up with extra stitches. Gonna try again tonight. If i don’t get it, I’ll bring it in to a local yarn shop and ask for help. They are always lovely and helpful 🙂 only problem is I’ll probably leave with a few new balls of yarn, lol!

I have to leave by 7am to get to my Bronx office for a 9am meeting, but I woke up at 7:30 so I used a Lyft and arrived on time, but $75 poorer ???? Donatella will be very disappointed in my having to divert perfume funds ????

Another grey and gloomy day. ☁ The oh-so-brief smell of fall is no longer in the air where I am at. Probably because it’s supposed to warm up later on this week back to summer-ish temps. ????

SOTD = Tempo, from the sample stash and a very generous NSTer. This make me happy, pure and simple. It also fits rather well into the vibe that Gold Knight and Woman in Gold have. So, win-win!

To clarify, the expected mid-week temps are in the low to mid 80’s and not anything crazy like 90’s. But it has happened in the past… I remember one October that had a long string of mid 90+ degree temps a few years back. ????

We’re on our way home from DC. It was a very quick 4 days 3 nights getaway.

    SOTD = Mugler Aura EDP

Anyone who likes vanilla should really try this one. I have not seen the EDT yet and would be curious as to a comparison.

The last museum we went to before leaving DC was the Smithsonian American History Museum. When you’re there, one of the highlights is the hall of First Ladies’ gowns. It is sobering that many of them were worn during my lifetime which means I’m old (and hopefully aging gracefully). Melania Trump’s dress was GORGEOUS. I overheard someone saying that the material used to make the dress (and I’m too lazy to look it up) is a very unforgiving material that every piece had to be precisely cut and sewn. She looked really good in it.

We also went to the newest museum in the Smithsonian family – the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) where we had a curator-led tour. We were able to get in about an hour before the general public and it felt extra special because once those doors opened, the crowds were overwhelming. Anyway, there are SO MANY things I DID NOT KNOW at all about African American history that I need to do something about it. I’ll start with reading more about the incidents that blew my mind from both a negative and positive standpoint to balance things out.

Working backwards, yesterday, we visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum, including the Portrait Gallery. I’ll just repeat some of my comments yesterday that I saw Barack Obama’s portrait and it looked like him but with an unexpected background (greenery with flowers but each flower represented his heritage, where he lives, where he became active in the community and politically). Michelle Obama’s portrait did not look like her at all, with a gray skin tone and almost a tight-lipped almost scowling face, although I could picture her wearing a dress that looked like what was on the painting. Bill Clinton’s portrait by Chuck Close was probably the least realistic as it was pretty much made up of colored bubbles, although, somehow, put together, it was both art and passable likeness, specially if you stood far away.

Yesterday morning was a private tour of the Newseum…for a rainy day, it’s a perfect place to spend a full day and still not get done perusing everything that is there. We also got to see the Green Room which was actually red. Besides the empty tissue box at the 9-11 exhibit, there was also an exhibit of all the journalists murdered, whether it be as a result of an act of war or because of intolerance.

On Saturday, it was the National Gallery and a visit to Hillwood, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s estate. The mansion was so elegant and her collections were magnificent. We also got to see a Faberge exhibit; she had 2 of her own and another one was loaned for the exhibit. There were other Faberge artifacts. Let’s just say St. Petersburg still houses the ultimate collection for obvious reasons.

We visited the MLK and FDR monuments and the White House (just the outside). Our guide was so bad the tour director fired her and told her not to come back (she was supposed to do another tour with us). Finally, in the evening, we watched a performance of “Born Yesterday” at the Ford Theater.

On the day we arrived (Friday), we had an evening tour of Mount Vernon with no crowds as they kept the place open just for us!

We were of course fed until we were on the verge of bursting!

After all these, I need to recover so I am taking Tuesday off as well.

If you get the chance, please visit Washington DC! It is a treasure trove of treasures.

I missed going to Arielle Shoshana on this trip and will try to make up for it the next time!

Just to clarify, I brought up the tissue box and the journalists to say these were the most poignant exhibits out of what I saw at the Newseum. Also, the painting of Climton looked like him but was the most abstract of all the portraits.

I’m sorry we didn’t provide you with better weather, but I’m glad you enjoyed your whirlwind visit nonetheless!

I’m heading upstate to Hyde Park this weekend — very excited about it!

Perchance, are you going to the CIA? Even if you’re not, it is still a treat!

Sounds like you had a great time! You smell great in Aura. I’m so curious about the edt too. Mugler is starting there sale Oct 5th, I think. I’m hoping to get the limited edition Alien, and then I can ask for a sample of the edt, since they let you get 5 samples. Smart of you taking tomorrow off. ????

Yep, I need it. I had to tell my mom that I am taking the day off for me and not for her because she was already giving me a list of frivolous errands (that can be done during the weekend) and I had to say no.

I need to go back for a more in-depth view of, at the very least, Newseum and NMAAHC.

My husband and I went to DC a long time ago but I still remember that trip. We went to many of the places that you visited. It was fabulous and there is so much to see and do. Glad you had a nice time. You’re probably going to need that extra day to recover.
