Friday scent of the day 8/10

Posted by Robin on 10 August 2018 519 Comments

Happy International Biodiesel Day, and whaddya know, Antonio Banderas turns 60 (oops, make that 58!! My sincere apologies to Mr. Banderas) today! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle, which isn't really as pretty as the picture.

Reminder: 8/17 will be Guessing Game Friday, edition 2. Describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

      Xl is my sweater size.
2XL if it’s slim fit. (How’s that for an oxymoron? It really is my size in some shirts! !!)

I’m hats and scarves too. And nothing with a pattern yet. My current project is a triangle shawl for a nursing home. Easy peasey….

We found some old skeins of wool my mom had squirreled away… deep pink and hot pink. That’ll take some thought…

A triangle shawl sounds interesting! but a bit more challenging! Usually what I have done with odd/challenging colors is use them for patterned hats and scarves with other left over yarn. I’ve made hats with five to six colors. Same here on the no pattern….I just eyeball everything 🙂

          • LizzieB says:
            10 August 2018 at 12:20 pm

The shawl is easy – from a pattern. But it was my first try at circular needles because of length. Next up is using them for a cap…I’ve only used straight needles before.

            10 August 2018 at 1:02 pm

Oh you are lightyears ahead of me! have not used circular needles at all! The librarian who taught me at our local library knitting club left and no one replaced her. She was the one who had the patience to teach me. So now I am just winging it. I make my hats as one piece and then sew the ends when I am done-LOL! primitive but effective 😉

I am thinking about Prada Tendre. It is a very large decant that is in a full size bottle. I am guessing maybe a third full? I have worn it a bit in the spring but was saving it for summer wear. It is gentle and non offensive and pretty so I can spray lavishly and just smell “good”.

My favorite of the body products is definitely the body cream. Mid-weight, absorbs quickly with no residue and is generously scented. A little spendy but I only use it on my arms, never slather it from head to toe! That’s what my CeraVe is for! Ha!

          Fudgy brownies.
I will twice bake the two (my limit) I will eat until the edges are burnt.
          I like them burnt.
          Purposely burn my toast, also.

Have y’all heard of Brownie Brittle? It’s like all of the crispy edges in a little bag. They have lots of different flavors; available in stores and on Amazon 🙂

If you like burnt brownies, have you tried adding a touch of espresso powder to the mix? It really adds flavor and a kick!

My wonderful grandma always preferred her cookies burnt. You all are in great company 🙂

I found this great recipe for Sheet Pan Brownies – basically a good brownie recipe that is spread on a sheet pan instead of 8×8 or 9×13. Thinner, crispier, and more portion control since they are thinner 😉

            10 August 2018 at 7:24 pm

Seconding the kudos for Brownie Brittle, wonderful with ice cream and great for summer picnics and concerts. Light but very chocolately and no melting.

Happy Burthday, Bear! My spiritual animal is a bear, so I am sending good vibes to you through the universe for a spectacular year ahead!

Thank You Everyone for your generous, kind Spirits and Birthday Wishes. I appreciate all of them, and all of You (Youse, Philadelphia after all……LOL) 😀
      ———————————————————–
Found this while Googling, believe all the good, none of the bad. 😉
“Affectionate, warm and cheerful people, Leos can be counted on to bring sunshine into other people’s lives. Dignified, playful, ambitious and loyal, they’re known for being exceptionally generous.

On the negative side, they can be quite egotistical, demanding, intolerant, domineering, lazy and stubborn. They can have a very high self esteem and be dissatisfied with performing any work which they feel is beneath them. They tend to put loved ones on a pedestal and have unreasonably high expectations for them, and hence are easily disappointed.

Many Leo men like to spend money on physical things which can be noticed. Flashy clothes, expensive cars, a large house etc. Generally if someone isn’t going to be jealous of it then he won’t buy it. Mean and cruel acts are generally beneath them, however they can be very aggressive, and few other signs can match their wrath when provoked. They forgive easily however, and generally don’t hold a grudge.”

    Vanille Insensee, day 4.
Was too busy at work yesterday to post, but I got another compliment from a coworker on my perfume Wednesday afternoon. You guys…I wear perfume every day and almost never get compliments, so 2 days in a row is unheard of! I think I see a split in my future. If you are a fan of VI, keep a watch out at the splitmeet this fall.????

Reveling in my second day of testing new Mugler colognes in Run Free (Violet). Love the light fresh spiciness of this one with hints of ginger and white musk. Another win in the blind buy category.

With the two new Muglers, the two Les Euax be Chanel (Deauville and Biarritz) and Tom Ford’s Eau de Soleil Blanc I have a great summer perfume profile going. Sprinkle in some Marc Jacobs Cucumber, Paco Rabbane Ultraviolet and flankers and a blast of Fleur de Male and I’m happy!

I don’t detect any anise. Ginger-yes! I’ve tried Fly Away (Yellow in the Rainbow of Fragrance) which is lemon, grapefruit and hemp I was told last night. I’m a fan…it worked well on me. I’m waiting until the other two are in stores because the notes are a bit more challenging for me.

It’s actually kind of creamy-fruity? The passion fruit is tart and then the drydown is sandalwood.

I’ve been on a vetiver kick during our little heat wave, which I find bracing and refreshing. Almost everything else has seemed too much and I’m not a big citrus fan (except as an accent, rather than the star). So Vetiver Tonka, AG Vetiver cologne, Sycomore, and today’s choice to be on theme: Atelier Vetiver Fatal.

    Woot woot! Happy Friday!!

Amouage Opus i on my left hand and Amouage Lilac Love on my right

I’ve tried Lilac Love before, and again, I get no lilac here, but a very pleasant orchid (i think)

Opus i is also very nice – I checked the fragrantica reviews, and my opinion doesn’t seem to be shared, but I don’t get any cardamom here, but I do get a lot of chamomile. There’s no accounting for noses!

Inspired by all using up samples, put on Ashoka sample. In the summer heat the fig is too sweet. Looking for a new fragrance for my birthday on Labor Day. Trying to get away from my citrus rut. Love Atelier Clementine, Pomelo but tired of them. Someone suggested Vetyverio—I love the Eau de toilette.

Nothing to do with SOTD, but those of you on the other side of the pond from the UK (& elsewhere) who may have read a previous ‘comment of mine about the potential demise of our House of Fraser departments stores might like to know it’s been bought by an English businessman called Mike Ashley. Not wishing to incur any wrath being directed at NST (not that I think Mr A even knows of its existence), if you wish to know more about his business ethos, just search online. One of the media reports called him “The Chavs’ Champion”. He bought the company at the 11th hour after an announcement that administrators had been called in & only a week after announcing his talks with HoF had broken down. I am so sorry for the staff, as I doubt most (if indeed any) will keep their jobs – certainly not people employed in the upmarket concessions, as that is not his sort of thing at all. It will be downhill from here for HoF, no doubt, & from a purely personal & selfish point of view I will miss the gorgeous Glasgow shop for its (although varying over the years) offerings of fragrance impossible to buy elsewhere in Scotland. On future trips to other UK & further afield cities I may have to forgo my ‘handcarry only’ rule if I want to make a purchase!

ug, hate these stories. There are elements outside of one person’s control, like the movement to buy from Amazon, and poor management. but just blech. I loved department stores when I was a kid – sounds like a silly legacy to want your children to experience, but they will never know what it’s like to enjoy shopping in person!

I agree with you Coin-Op! I miss the mom and pop shops and Woolworths, Alexanders, Gimbels, Lerners….so many stores that are long gone that were part of my childhood…..I remember shopping in the stores in the city with my mom when I was young. And my dad used to take me to out local Woolworths for lunch and we would sit at the lunch counter. Sad that now it seems that Amazon is the only way we shop. I think Amazon has put a lot of brick and mortar places out of business.

Great memories! 🙂 I grew up in the 80’s in a suburb, but we still had milk delivered for a while and our local Walgreens had a lunch counter. I recently visited the downtown Philly Macy’s which used to be Wannamaker’s, and it was really depressing!

My mom worked for Joskey’s and my dad had a career with a company that was destroyed by corporate raiding, along with previous poor management and economic trends – so I know the sting of these shifts in buying habits and corporate appetites!

I also agree with you, Coin-op! Even in my small town, we had a lovely dept store on Main St, with cosmetic and perfume counters by the entrance and a sweeping, curved staircase to the second floor. In the lingerie department, there was an actual bra fitter who would bring different styles to you in the dressing room and kept your measurements on file. Sigh. I really miss full service gas stations too.

I will be in Atelier Sous le Toit de Paris after I shower. I mostly get violet in this. It’s one of those where I wasn’t sure, but my husband loved it so I got a small bottle. I’ve learned to listen to him and, of course, I now enjoy it immensely. Happy to see Atelier sells the 30 ml bottle in their website.

I will say it is a hard adjustment being home. I was in a 2,000 sq ft house with huge master bedroom for almost 6 weeks. Now I’m back in an apartment that is 1/3rd the size. We’ve definitely run out of space…need some serious culling.

That sounds like a productive plan. I just read a nice self-help article that suggested arranging your life around what you do anyway, rather than trying to change all your habits. The example in the article was , if you always just leave your shoes in the living room, instead of beating yourself up about not taking them to the bedroom or the back porch or whereever, just get a nice storage solution for the living room, a little shoe cabinet that could serve as a plant stand in front of a window or something, and stop beating yourself up.
Getting a house with enough room to isolate said husband and noisemakers is a much better solution that trying to stop the noise….:-)

    Hi All!

    1) SOTD: Acqua diParma parfum(sample from an older friend), which is incredible. That is the only way to describe it. On pulse points only- quite potent.

    2) RIP to Chris Georgio/Mr. Sillage. I just found out, and am shocked.

    3) Arrakis has been Arrakis; the only relief to be found is riverside or at the beach-the local pools are now at capacity! Hopefully the rain forecast for tomorrow is not a lie.

That is so sad. Thanks for mentioning it here, I did not know. Mr. Sillage was a great voice around the perfume world. Brings to my mind this:

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.” — Anthony Bourdain

        Way too young.

(It’s always way too young to me)

We are of an age, and he did two tours of active duty. In his time back in civilian life he looked for beauty and purpose, which I think so many young- way too young- veterans try their best to do.

I’m wearing Amouage Library Opus VIII, and feeling majestic. But I’ve been in a funk lately, just tired of hurting and healing, and a friend’s kitty just was diagnosed with abdominal cancer…. other friends are dealing with family losses…. my mom will be moving soon into senior living and I can’t travel yet so can’t go to help out, she’s so anxious and confused…. Just kind of summer doldrums I guess.

It’s been nothing but false starts with my parents being released from the hospital. My mom has atypical pneumonia and they are finishing all of their tests and they over adjusted my dad’s meds and that is getting straightened out. My parents said that I didn’t need to stop by today since they are probably being released today and they have a ride. Today is a grocery shopping day and doing some cleaning. I am in Amouage Memoir body butter today. The stress and uncertainty has done a number of my skin.

Atelier Cologne Silver Iris, which may be one of the most short lived perfumes I’ve ever worn. Barely detectable by the time I got to work, so let’s say 25 min from application. And now it is truly gone. It smells so good when it first goes on though! I may be able to get away with reapplying in the bathroom stall since I’m using a sample.

I adore bergamot too! I tried Bergamote Soleil in a store and was very close to buying a small bottle. But it was out of stock, maybe that was lucky for me, I will get a sample and try it again at home. My nose gets overwhelmed when sampling multiple scents at the perfume counter, and then my scent judgement is not the best. 😉

SotM = Orange Sanguine, and will add Vanille Insensee later for the creamsicle effect.

OS was my first Atelier. A lovely NSTer sent me a sample. Completely enjoyed OS so I ordered an Atelier Discovery Set. Heavenly sniffing for a cologne lover like me. Atelier still offers the discovery set, or you can choose six+ samples, and shipping is free either way. Just sayin’! 😀

This weekend, after completing my to do list, I will reward myself with an order of a handful of Atelier samples. There are so many I’ve not had a chance to smell. I’ll try to limit myself to a half dozen or so.

Hope everyone has a fabulously fragrant Friday.

Thank you for offering to share, your perfume library must be one of the world’s largest. 😉 I’m planning to order samples of a few of these Ateliers that I’ve never found tester bottles for:

Jasmin Angelique, Camelia Intrepide, Emeraude Agar, Sud Magnolia, Figuier Ardent, Encens Jinhae, Philtre Ceylan, or Tobacco Nuit.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant

This can cut through heat and humidity like nobody’s business. It is citrusy and has a sheer booziness. It smells the same from beginning to end. 10 spritzes. I usually bring this on vacation and tend to top up with 2-3 spritzes during the day.

In other news, someone at work discovered our shared interest in perfumes. I will try to keep NST my secret place ???? so I can continue to be myself.

I owe a bunch of people freebies and a swap package. I will try to get to them betweeen this and next week.

I saw some people expressed interest in Mohur Extrait: yasmina, sterling925 and emilie — if you are in the U.S. please email me. I’m happy to give you a wee sample but don’t blame me if you get hooked.

Also, I think plyshka, if you are reading this, email me. There’s no need to buy a sample of Profumum Roma Acqua Viva as I will share some with you.

Very true, lillyjo. I have another co-worker who I like whom I’ve invited to Twisted Lily during Sniffapalooza, a Puredustance event AND we’ve also gone shopping at Bergdorfs and she was tickled pink that some of the SAs knew me by name (outed as a regular!). Even with her, I was careful to remain vague about how I met the other NYC perfumustas.

Cedrat Enivrant has the best dry down of all the Ateliers I’ve tried so far. Orange Sanguine’s is very good too but on me it is very faint at the end.

I’m in just a little PdN Fig-Tea to give it one last try, and many sprays of Atelier Figuier Ardent. I needn’t have sprayed the Nicolai, since the monster FA swallowed it up.

Puppygirl has a skin infection, and the oral antibiotic is not agreeing with her. Added an anti-nausea med, plus topical spray which she just loves. ???? Bland diet of chicken and rice as well. We will see how the next dose goes…if it goes down and stays down.

Drinking Yogi Sweet Nectarine tea, which is supposed to be calming. Also eating cotton candy jelly bellys and I’m not sorry. I’m a little worried and unsettled today.

I think we have the right anti-nausea med, now. It’s hard when pets get older and their immune systems go haywire.
I hope your kitty feels better, and the steroid does the trick!
And the jelly beans were from the tail end of a bag, so not too much damage to my tail end. ????

I’m the only one wearing Atelier Sud Magnolia this morning? Wow.

Went to see Train and Hall and Oates last night, it was a good show but ran late. Then I had to get up early to make a 6:45 endoscopy appt. Results were as expected–I have GERD and a hiatal hernia, but I knew that already. The endoscopy was a breeze but the doc wants a barium swallow next and those are gross. Why can’t somebody make a chocolate-flavored barium?

Kitties on deck for the weekend! Can’t wait to cuddle those little furries.

Also, has anyone tried Abel perfumes? Twisted Lily has a sample set of 6 perfumes plus a coupon for 20% off any future Abel purchase for $35 (not affiliated). I’m thinking about it mainly because I see their perfumes are offered in 15ml bottles for $70 so are in the realm of affordability and use-up-ability.

Gaynor and I tried them…if it’s the same Abel ( a New Zealander living in the Netherlands hence the ‘Abel’ for Abel Tasman who was the first European to make it to NZ). They are all naturals, low sillage, very fleeting…work better on clothes than skin. They had that watery /diluted vibe that you sometimes get from naturals. One…can’t remember the name but had amber….was ok but it was gone in 20 minutes. I wasn’t very taken with them.

Yes it is replaceable,it is a limited-ish design where Lina Cavalieri is wearing a suit of armor, peeking out from the helmet on the one side, and on the other side the helmet is closed.Otto fragrance which filled my apartment after the accident. There is a wonderful shop in Johannesburg that stocks them, but as we know they are not el cheapo candles,so I’ll sit on my hands for now.I do have a “tiny” collection of Fornasetti, although this one was a favorite design.✌????

I somehow lost my sample(s) of Atelier Grand Neroli, so I’m going for partial credit with Ava Luxe Patchouli Leaves (apparently now discontinued). Some of the niche patchoulis lean too hard on the amber for my taste; this one doesn’t, and it has a green, almost briney quality to my nose. It feels dewy and outdoorsy, not musty in the slightest (patch sometimes goes that way on me). It also wears sheer enough to work in the current heat. I wish my sample was bigger.

I saw my first lamb of spring yesterday , very bouncy in a green paddock. There was a small article in the paper last week with the head of the Botanic Gardens saying that their annual records show that flowers/blossoms are 6-8 weeks earlier this year than in previous years. We have had very few hard frosts and only fleeting snow…more of a dull bleak cold winter than a bitter frosty winter. I will have to mow the lawns this weekend. I have been enjoying my graveyard walks recently. There are so many thrushes singing. The graveyard must be far safer from cats than our neighbourhood ( they tend to get caught so easily that I only see one or two ) . The birds there are so vocal, claiming territory, looking for mates…I counted 23 species in my notebook just from their call yesterday. Really wonderful. iWearing Debaser, waiting for sunrise .

We have far fewer cicadas down here than up north where Waterdragon lives. They have such an intoxicating sound. They have such an amazing life cycle …love them. Our garden has a lot of stick insects, wetas and huhu grubs ( they are big like cicadas but look like they are made from wood) and whistling tree frogs. It has been years since I saw a praying mantis.

Woodlouse and earthworms are our garden staples, and the kids love them, we have lots of crickets in the neighbouring fields which make lovely music tho.

Has anyone heard any rumours about vero Profumo?? I was at Bloom perfumery in London today, and they told me the company is folding, Rubj EdP is no longer available,.” I’m so sad if this is true, as I’ve fallen hard for Rubj & Onda edp and have been buying small samples from bloom every couple months, they are such unique and inventive creations! Please chime in with any info, there’s nothing I can see online. Thanks!

I hope so much this is the case- maybe the people at Bloom have had a falling out with the company , and they will not be carrying line anymore?

That picture really is gorgeous. Partial credit today in Annick Goutal Vetiver (it counts because it came out while Annick was still part of the name)(I totally, totally understand the hate for dropping the Annick out of the name of the perfume line, but a one-word name really does seem more chic).

It might be this pesky cold, but Vetiver blossomed today in a way it never has on my skin before. Today, the vetiver floated down on a cloud of smoke and Indian incense (temple-style). I looked at the notes and they include neither smoke nor incense, so…so much for that.

Anyway, we’re going to a super fancy restaurant tomorrow night to belatedly celebrate my birthday (dragging this out as long as I can!). I pray my sinuses will be crystal clear, in order to permit me to smell and taste each marvelous dish. I also pray this cough will go away so I don’t have to destroy my palate with cough drops. Cross your fingers for me!

Very, very late to the party today but my sister came to visit here today and we went to the Middelheim Park in Antwerp together which was great fun. It’s a lovely park, a little sun parched these days, with lots of statues.
SOTD is Amouage Jubilation 25, which is on it’s way to becoming my second favourite Amouage, and I just love wearing it in summer.

I can’t remember what Honour is like, though I know I’ve tried it. I always confuse it with Journey for some reason.
Out of the more recent ones I really enjoyed Myths and was pleased by the first minutes of Bracken.

Honour is a fresh white floral with a prominent rhubarb note, blooms beautifully in the heat. Unfortunately my mini is empty, and I haven’t purchased a bottle… I am pondering subscribing to Scentbird to get a decant 🙂

It is an herbal patchouli fougere with a chypre heart. If Estée Lauder’s original fragrance line is your cup of tea, I encourage you to seek it out. I love masculines, I wear them frequently. My first bottle of perfume purchased was Givenchy Pi, all my favorite Caron’s are found at the Men’s counter and the only Cartier I cannot live without is Declaration. OK. Maybe L’Envol too.

    Commuting Woes No. 448:

Today’s featured layering: armpit body odor, bad breath and Juicy Fruit (the original flavor with the yellow outer wrapper).

Smelled in the wild — Angel! (where was she when I needed her?)

Petunia – good call on the scarf. I use it when it’s colder to cover my nose. I need to decide on what to lightly spray on it as an antidote to the smell!

In other news at work — rweedle dee and tweedle dumb ????

I asked our Real Estate group to consider making 2 changes, one of which was to replace a small table that seats 4 to one that seats 8 and I provided the specific location in our building that has the same setup. I got a response that I need to formally submit it (no problem) and a pompous “BTW, we have to adhere to standards” to which I said Great, there’s precedence to my request for the 8-seater. The next email demanded to know what I meant by precedence. Oh lordie lordie. We’re my expectations too high that she should have understood me since I already told her it was the same setup on another floor in our building?

Sometimes, a good old-fashioned phone call does wonders. Most people don’t as they are always looking to keep proof or evidence. Some ALWAYS puts a read receipt and I always say no I don’t want to send the read receipt just to mess them up.

Keeping It Simple on a hot and sunny Friday and joining the crowd wearinh Ateler Orange Sanguine earlier. I find it much more citrussy than orange and can’t even smell the blood orange note it supposedly contains, which is my favorite orange note, so it gets just an O.K. vote from me. Spent another delightful fun afternoon with the grandkids at our favorite neighborhood pool and now we’re all heading off to our Friday-night-concert-in-the-park featuring a local classic rock band playing the hits of the past. I’m wearing a slightly psychedelic shirt and for a party mood, Ralph Lauren Ralph Rocks. Now this is creamsicle! which evolves into a creamy coconut. Staying with our simple theme, we’ll be picking up some pizza and bringing along a couple of Leinie Summer Shandies for us and lemonade without the beer for the kids. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!
