Monday scent of the day 7/23

Posted by Robin on 23 July 2018 271 Comments

With apologies, it is Monday again. Local weather report: rain, then more rain. RIP Jonathan Gold. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Etat Libre d’Orange You or Someone Like You.

Reminder: on 7/27 we'll celebrate the Buck Moon...pick your poison for the full moon tonight.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Homemade Woody Pudding body oil…a spritz of Pacifica Mexican Cocoa on each wrist… and four sprays of Greylocke on my shirt.

Mmm, Mexican Cocoa must have been delicious as a perfume. I was only able to try it as a candle (which was also fabulous) before it was discontinued.

It is delicious…the middle Marzipan has a full bottle which was languishing in the basement so I brought it up last night and am testing it out…the initial blast is strong but the dry down is absolutely amazing….I think she paid 15 dollars for it at our local health food store many years ago but I could see this selling now for 10 times the amount if it were marketed as niche….

I had the candle myself and it really was sooo good! I think the Pacifica candles are probably my favorites and it’s sad that they d/c those as well.

They’ve dc’d so many good scents from their line. 🙁 I know they’ve changed the focus of their business, but ….. sad.

Sad for us because they were well done and highly affordable. I would rather have the old fragrances and candles versus the skincare that is being promoted now.

I have Pacifica candles stashed away that were discontinued years ago. They made some brilliant ones including Pacific Red Ginger, Wild English Clary Sage, Moroccan Chamomile Apple Blossom, Egyptian Bergamot Rose, Vietnamese Ylang Ylang & French Lavender, Nerola Orange Blossom, Tunisian Jasmine, and Indochine. The only ones I like now are French Lilac and Spanish Amber. But… I have discovered another line from Canada called Apothecary by Pure Home Couture. They are fantastic – the Everyday candles come in 36 scents. I have the English Ivy and the Black Tea and Cedar Wood. I have tried all the testers at a shop in my neighbourhood and they smell realistic and are excellent quality. No affiliation with the company – just very impressed by their products.

I have been marinating two sliced vanilla beans in 4 oz of NOW Sweet Almond Oil for several weeks. I added 1/2 oz of my homemade vanilla mixture to 1/2 oz of NOW Sandalwood Oil….that’s it….very easy and simple. I am on a vanilla bean kick and have also added vanilla beans to Skye vodka…not for drinking(as hajusuuri suggested) but for spraying on myself to freshen up….it smells really good.

Today is a very exhausting day for me, so I did not do anything creative with the CP. Just D’Orsay Tilleul – lovely linden blossom.

Earlier I found some interesting information on the Buck Moon. Maybe it will inspire someone:

    “JULY FULL MOON NAMES
July is the month of the Full Buck Moon. At this time, a buck’s antlers are in full growth mode. This Full Moon was also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month.

Here are a few other Native American names for the July full Moon (translated literally into English):
    *
    “Ripe Corn Moon” –Cherokee
    *
    “Middle of Summer Moon” –Ponca
    *
“Moon When Limbs of Trees Are Broken by Fruit” –Zuni.”

LOVE it!! Thank you Glannys, we are heading out west this week and have had some crazy experiences with the ‘Thunder Moon’ and her storms over the years. I love it out there, there is something so spiritual and grounding about those mountains and buttes. I really respect and admire the Native culture and am a student of their art & culture.

Thank You Robin for the Buck Moon reference!!This should be our theme for the adventure!

I love that so much. Thanks for sharing. Maybe I’ll get lucky and see “my” big buck Friday. We have a family (not sure what to call a herd of deer) of mule deer that walk through our back yard several times a week. It’s obviously a regular path they take. It’s usually 5-8 doe, but we’ve seen one juvenile male with little antlers and one BIG boy. We saw the big boy once by himself and twice with his harem haha.

Please send us a little bit of that rain, Robin.

After a period of drought of at least four weeks, the forecast for the next week is……more drought….and a heatwave*.
*Dutch definition of a heatwave is a period of at least 5 consecutive days in which maximum temperature exceeds 25 celcius, AND on at least 3 of those days the max temp exceeds 30 degrees (86F)

SotD is Un jardin sur le Nil.

I had a very busy weekend…again, lots of social events. Bbq, birthday bash, lunch with family….

Though I had a lot of fun, i am looking forward to a quiet weekend without any appointments!

Yess I am fine with it, I love summer!

But poor animals in the national parcs (young boars and deers) are having a hard time right now surviving. Our country is not build for heat. For instance, the climate control system in our office cant handle it. I have a small USB desk fan to keep it cool. 🙂

A long drought like this in this area of Europe is very uncommon.
Usually we have only 1 or 2 weeks of hot weather.

        Oh wow, thats hot. 🙁
40 degrees celcius is unheard of here. Record high in The Netherlands is 38,2 if I recall correctly.

But we are expecting temps of 33/34 celcius – thats into the 90s in Fahrenheit – by end of the week. Very unusual for this region.

According to the local meteorologists, we are entering into a lovely weather pattern with high temps in the 70Fs and low temps at night in the 50Fs. This is favorite weather for me but instead of enjoying it, I find myself concerned that such cool temperatures now mean unusually hot temperatures in late August and September; by that time of year, I’m usually longing for cooler days and nights. We shall see.

You smell amazing. I watched some scenes from Dead Reckoning (with Humphrey Bogart and Lizabeth Scott) the other day and thought about this perfume. Since this is a film noir, everyone smokes a lot, and the femme fatale (Scott) wear a signature jasmine perfume which is frequently commented upon in the film.

Just a quick spritz of Oyedo before walking my kid preschool – it was 83 degrees when we left and 86 when I returned 20 min later & it wasn’t even 8am. Drinking coffee AND water now.

Anyone know if DS & Durga discontinued the HYLNDS series? They don’t seem to be on their website but are still available other places.

This is the best kind of Monday- one that doesn’t require clocking in and out!

As usual, I’m in VT today, trying to use up this magical never empty bottle.

Wicked storm here last night! A rumble of thunder and then the skies opened, bucketing down rain and dime sized hail. Everything was covered in hail, and the trees took a fierce pummeling, but the end result was a huge waft of pine and evergreen from the shredded trees. I tried to get under some trees because I was afraid the van and camper top would get damaged, but we seem to have made it through no problem.

The other upside was a phenomenal sunset of neon golds, pinks, tangerine, with an occasional scrap of blue for contrast, gold tipped mountains and gilded trees backlit in a rising mist… The light was just out of this world, and luckily I was camped in a great spot to photograph it. So beautiful ????

The storm was pretty impressive. Glad I wasn’t out hiking when it came through. The temps dropped 15-20 degrees in about 10 minutes. But yes, a beautiful sunset! Pretty sure the rain is very needed here! It’s the first time I have seen rain since I left Oregon back in April! ????

I have almost zero followers, I’m not sponsored by anyone, and no one cares about it other than me! I like to look through the photos and reminisce, mostly. You should definitely start one! Ugh, yes, Monday. I’m at work wearing my sample of January by SmellBent which was a lovely daffodil stem/vanilla fragrance (to my nose, anyway) and about to go grab a London Fog (with half the usual vanilla) from my local Starbucks. Because, like Regina above, I could have used more naps–or any naps–this weekend.

I’m in Montreal, it’s above normal for here but not by a lot, we regularly get humidity and temps in the 30’s. It’s been like this for the past couple of weeks with no letup in sight, although I keep hoping. I hate being cooped up but I also hate the suffocating heat.

Sounds like everyone is having unusual heat…it’s our normal mid to high 90s here on the edge of CA Central Valley.

It’s my husband’s birthday, and I’ll be away…which makes us sad. Some friends took him out to a beautiful, delicious dinner last night. Very thankful they did that. He’s taking himself to a movie today and having lunch at McDonald’s. Said he had a craving.

I’m wafting Infusion d’Oeillet today. I do love carnation. Busy few days ahead. Really need to push in clearing things out. I’m becoming friends with the folks at Goodwill…

Sampling Without Words from Anna Zworykina (not sure if spelled correctly) which is a nice peppery rose but I really liked Hue which I sampled yesterday. Hue is a salty moss heavy scent with a teeny bit of florals

Deserve it? Of course you do ????! I can’t speak to whether it’d be prudent now, though.

It’s lovely, but to be honest, there are others in this genre that have the same effect and are less expensive (Silences, for one). Don’t think I’ll ever need a bottle of this.

I’m in Trayee because I could still smell the incense perfume on me that I sampled last night, even after my morning shower. Not sure Trayee is really doing it for me today, but thst may be partly because of how much I love the perfume I sampled last night. It’s 20 Mars 2022 by Rundholz Parfums. Incense lovers must try this! It’s very potent and made me think of what SSS Incense Pure could have smelled like on me (sadly that line didn’t work on me). Also recommend for fans of Tauer’s incense perfumes, Terveer Incense, and Aedes Copal Azur. Thanks to cazaubon for the freebie sample in the swap package some months back.

How odd; are all of his scent names dates? What does he think is going to happen on that date to merit the corresponding scent? Why are some dates in French, while others are in English? All the date formats are different. Hmm, I’ve never smelled any of them, but I am a bit perturbed.

SOTD = PdE Le Cri de la Lumiere (spellcheck keeps wanting to change this to Cruise de la Lumber which makes no sense at all)

I have a split portion and I am happy with the fragrance and have enough of it (until I don’t). Today, I am getting crunchy apple salad which I think comes from the rose. Does anyone else get apple?

I bought all 3 Harry’s Shower Gels. I am in testing mode…I had a weird 1” x 0.5” hive on my forearm (just red, not raised or itchy where I washed yesterday) which appeared this morning and it’s now gone without me putting any type of ointment. It could have been from the heat of the omelet I had this morning as I was cradling the bag on my forearm. Anyway, it is a nice scent. I only used enough to lightly wash my left forearm so I will need to do more testing to make sure I don’t get rashly with more and more frequent exposure.

Okay SOTD: I am in 4711 today because we need to SERIOUSLY channel some sunny weather here!!

Can someone help me decide and weigh in?
I am really considering a purchase of Iris Cendre which is on (a fabulous) sale at theline.com, THANK YOU UNDINA for the alert yesterday – but it would be a blind buy…..
Can you tell me how you feel it compares to Aedes Iris Nazarena? My idea here is to split the bottle and give 1/2 to a dear friend who loves IN, but I don’t know whether I should. I know it has had a good following here at NST over the last few years. I don’t have a lot of experience with Iris as a note yet, and I have no time to sample before the sale ends! Help? I am so conflicted.

To me, Iris Cendre was more similar to Iris Silver Mist than Iris Nazarena, but that was just going by memory as I never tested all three side by side. If you like Iris Nazarena and/or Iris Silver Mist I think Iris Cendre is a safe blind buy, especially for that price.

Iris Cendre does have a burnt smell missing from Iris Nazarene, and I agree the iris is closer to iris silver mist. IC is my favorite of the three. I can’t wear IN because something in it gives me a little headache, alas.

It’s too hot here for any but the lightest of scents, applied lightly. For me, that means JCE Hermes. So today is Muguet Porcelain. Before it’s too hot to cook I made cold peanut noodles for dinner tonight and some tzatziki for tomorrow. Plus, I had some leftover melted chocolate from frosting the HobNobs so I drizzled it over some potato chips. I think that will be lunch.

I noticed a huge difference in how I perceived EB Apollo Hyacinth compared to a few wintertime wears. IMHO, it smells so much more beautiful in the heat. In the colder months it was just a nondescript light floral. I almost put it in the give away pile. So glad I gave it another wear.

Unsettled weather in my part of the world today. I had 2 errands to do today, and there was fresh rain on the truck each time after both. Fortunately, the showers have been light, and short-lived. ????☔

One of the errands was taking Teflon kitty to the vet. I had noticed her scratching her ears more than normal lately. Turns out she has a bit of an ear infection. Poor kitty. ???? We now have some ear drops to deal with that bit of unpleasantness.

SOTD = back in Tempo today. Just the right thing to go with the humid, somewhat soggy weather. Also, since it wears quietly on me, it worked well at the vet clinic.

I did try Hiram Green Voyage over the weekend, thanks to a generous NSTer. A very nice, green amber that I should go back into when cooler fall weather shows up.

The vet thought that the inflammation was caused by a buildup of ear wax and other stuff. The drops are meant to clear all that out. I should know in a couple of weeks if this works.

Teflon did not come to us with that name. The shelter had given her a flower name that did not suit her personality at all. Mr. Jalapeno and I must have discussed and rejected 2 dozen names for her. We had to have a name for her in short order, since the paperwork we signed said she needed to see a vet within 1 week of adoption. Finally, and with some mild exasperation, I suggested that we call her Teflon, since none of the other names we had came up with stuck.

        Geek humor.
