Thursday scent of the day 6/21

Posted by Robin on 21 June 2018 284 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Music Day! Plus, the solstice. What fragrance are you wearing?

I celebrated the solstice by sleeping late. I am going to pick a fragrance one of you is wearing.

Reminder: on 6/22 we're doing the Picture challenge, edition 3. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is David Hockney's Beverly Hills Housewife, from 1966. You can read more about the painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hindu Honeysuckle

I made cherry ???? clafoutis yesterday, mostly because I was nervous about Spain playing

Love clafoutis! In the same vein – slightly under the radar yet delicious baked goods – have you ever made or eaten a Dutch Baby?

No, can you tell me more about the Dutch Baby?

A Dutch Baby is a sort of cross between a pancake and a souffle, made in the oven, usually in a cast iron skillet. It can be sweet or savory, and is fairly easy to whip up. Eggs, flour, and milk form the base – oh, don’t forget the butter in the sizzling hot pan – and you can top it with whatever. A sprinkling of powdered sugar and some preserves on the side is classic, but the base is so plain you could do anything with it, really.

This is probably the most odd sentence I’ve ever read here. Lol, don’t eat the Dutch baby!

I realized that right after I posted. Making a Dutch baby is all well and good, but you really shouldn’t eat them! 🙂

Ohhh yum! I’ve been eating a ton of cherries this past week, they are particularly good this year!
My favorite thing to do is to simmer them in reduced balsamic vinegar (reduce vinegar by 50%, it should have a thickness similar to molasses), add a touch of cinnamon and pour over vanilla ice cream. If you wanted to be healthy, you could top Greek yogurt with it. 🙂

        wow..that sounds really good!
One day I should invest in a cherry pitter or some tool, taking the pits out by hand is annoying at times.

I will try this recipe out..now to buy vanilla ice-cream pronto!

It also works well with any type of berry, strawberries or blackberries especially.
If the berries aren’t quite in season or flavorful an easy cheat is to add a dab of black raspberry jam to thicken the sauce and add sweetness and flavor intensity. It also makes a great marinade for a pork roast done in the crock pot. 🙂

Question for you, SmokeyToes – black raspberry jam is my favorite, and I can’t find it anywhere! Any hints?

        • AnnE says:

A cherry pitter was definitely worth the investment for me. Works for olives, too.
It’s one of those kitchen gadgets that I don’t use very often (like the asparagus steamer I finally broke down and bought), but has no happy substitute. And a pitter doesn’t take up as much room!

Seville A L’Aube today. Thankfully it’s pretty cloudy outside, but I love this one in the heat too.

Sadly my L’artisan collection doesn’t have anything to match the poll picture but I’ve got something else in mind.

    Have a great one, all!

I’m thinking of wearing Ralph Lauren Pure Turquoise to go with the main colors in the picture and the humid/rain and heat weather we’re supposed to get tomorrow. Also work is doing a bra fit / semiannual sale and that scent shouldn’t be too offensive to clients. I don’t know why I’m even concerned, the store also sells some Isabel Toledo perfumes (Edp) and they are fairly strong!

Going to be trying out Boucheron Vanille de Zanzibar shortly.

Also, I secured a bottle of the new Iris Ganache which has pushed me over my perfume budget for this year and we’re not even into July yet. I hadn’t planned on this purchase back in January and I’m not sure how long they’ll keep the IG in production, so I only feel semi-guilty right now. Kind of like semi-sweet chocolate but with even less sugar. 😉

Hi everyone! Dipped into my special occasion only stash and am wearing Iris Nazarena ( there seems to be alot of iris in the special occasion only stash lol) today is my birthday, a notable one at that. My big plans are to renew my car tags and birthday shop for my daughter’s birthday which is tomorrow. I took 3 days off in a row though, and will enjoy not working very much. Happy first day of summer!

I was running late and decided to wait until I got to the office to put on fragrance. I have samples in my drawer, and the only one that made sense was Acqua di Parma Colonia. This is my first time to wear it, and I like it. At least it seems just the thing for this hot, muggy, overcast morning.

Thanks for all the comments yesterday! I had a great time and enjoyed the day with my friends!
I am wearing AC Iris Rebelle. I didn’t love it much at the begging, but it is growing on me. Sadly, it does not last long.

Coffee and more coffee for the usual busy day! Happy Summer everyone!

Thank you! Iris Rebelle is very weak in terms on longevity. However, Orange Sanguine and Cafe Tuberosa may last the whole day on me.

I had good 15 sprays of IR this morning, not only on skin, but on my clothes also. Unfortunately, it is gone after 2 hours. I need to lightly reapply during the day, not to bother anyone around me at the moment I overspray.

I was worried that your power had gone out, Robin. We had a MONSTER thunderstorm here in Portland this morning – luckily the power held through my blowdry and makeup application. Now if it would just go out before I have to leave (so the garage door won’t open), I’ll be set. 🙂

Testing Kyoto today, from a dabber sample. Mr. G and I agree: we may like it (emphasis on “may”). I’m wondering if it’s better sprayed – does anyone have experience there?

I think some of that series definitely need copious amounts of sprays to be fully experienced since they tend to be light. Kyoto is probably one of them.

Wow, a thunderstorm! I missed them while I was there. I love thunderstorms if they’re not damaging, so I’m jealous.

I like Kyoto, but it took me a while to warm up to it. I try to spray lightly, actually; a friend over-sprayed it one day, and it was not good. Let me know if you would like a decant to spritz!

Ann! Are you not here anymore? Thank you so much for the decant offer – coincidentally (or maybe not!), STC sent an email today with a discount code for certain fragrance lines, one of which is CdG … so I promptly ordered a bigger sample of Kyoto from them. I can actually still smell it a bit, in my watch band area (I guess it doesn’t get rubbed off as quickly there), and it’s definitely one I want to explore further.

Bvlgari Omnia, the original, is on deck today. Blind bought a couple weeks ago and have worn little else since. The chai spices never overwhelm, are kept light, refreshing, yet warm. Somehow it manages to be perfectly wearable in the summer heat. Buying back ups. Seems to have been discontinued? If so, what a loss. To me, it’s the best of the entire Omnia line.

Agree with you about Omnia! Hands-down the best one! You smell great!

Early in my perfumistahood, I bought a ton of spicy tea fragrances–couldn’t get enough of them! Omnia, for me, was the most approachable, “safe,” choice–for when I didn’t want it to be too too much. I also found that it always seemed to get lots of love from the men in my company. ????

Wearing a dab of PW Tea Rose on my left hand, a dab of Marni Rose on my right hand, dabs of Lolita Lempicka Fleur Defendue on my arms, all from my swap&freebie box from Kpaint 🙂

I love tea rose, it does not smell exactly like rose oil at all, as many reviewers say, I think it reminds me a lot of what crabtree & eveleyn rose smelled like, but it has been a long time since I smelled it. So good!

Marni Rose smells a lot like make-up to me, which I love, but I don’t see any reviews mentioning that.

PW Tea Rose is my “reference rose” perfume. I don’t often wear it, but when I need to smell rose, it scratches the itch perfectly. Dabbed is the way to go, when sprayed it goes on and on forever.

I read up on her and she sounded quite fascinating. Not the vapid nameless housewife I initially assumed was being depicted. I did some digging around to see if she had relationships with certain designers buy that doesn’t seem to have been her milleau – though I may have just not dug around enough.

Hi Lillyjo! I wish my nose was better at separating notes, so I could compare it better to other things! On my skin, I definitely get the honey note (which is just like her Centrepiece scent), and I get the tobacco and quite a bit of sweetness. But I can’t really compare it to anything except the honey note in Centrepiece….Too many notes for my nose? LOL

Wearing Atelier Vanille Insensee this morning, from the “meh” sample pile. Still feeling meh about it. I keep looking for an incense to love, but they’re all too dry and ascetic for me. My dad burned incense throughout my childhood, and I have fond memories of the fragrances of them, but I haven’t found a scent that is reminiscent or properly evocative . . . it’s always more churches and ashtrays and less drippy candles on the fireplace mantle and Creedence on the turntable.

Dragon’s Blood? Nag Champa? Any thoughts?

Nag champa is certainly closer to “drippy candles on the fireplace mantle and Creedence on the turntable”!

But most of the ones I have tried were too sweet for me. So I am waiting for answers to your question too.

Other things that came to mind: The Different Company Le 15, Paestum Rose, or one of the Aedes or Olivier Durbano variations on incense.

I think the only one on that list I’ve sniffed was Paestum Rose, and I fear I have no memory of it . . . I will make a note of the others. Thanks, Robin!

Diptyque’s Eau Duelle is a vanilla with an incense note. I like it better than Vanilla Insensee (though I do like VI as well) – it’s a bit drier. Maybe a sandalwood + incense scent would be closer to the mood you want?

I remember Eau Duelle as strictly vanilla, but I think I only sampled it as a little dabber . . . I wonder if the incense needed a heavier hand? Sandalwood is a good thought. I do like a few sandalwood frags–Champagne de Bois is lovely, but often TOO MUCH for me. And I have a bottle of Bois des Iles. Hmm. I know I sampled several formulations of Samsara, but I can’t recall going on a proper sandalwood hunt. . . might need to do explore that further. Thanks!

Sample shopping again…TF Sole di Positano. A good summery scent. I’m sure I’ll need to reapply throughout the day.

Was all geared up to make an attempt at a peach tart yesterday until I realized I missed recipe. Need more peaches…so back to WF I go.

Is it just me or is it very hard nowadays to find decent peaches? They’re often very disappointing and mealy.

Agree about peaches at the grocery store being lower quality. Never sweet and ripe and then suddenly moldy.

There is a window of a few weeks in my part of the world, when we can pick our own peaches. They are so superior, I can hardly get myself to buy them any other way anymore. I’ve canned them in years past, but it’s never quite as wonderful as fresh. . .

It’s sooo disappointing. I became a peach fan years ago when living in DC and got a lot of Georgia peaches. I ate a ton of them in the summer. The past few years I’ve eaten few peaches because I’ve had such bad experiences. I did well at CA farmers markets, but here in NYC I’m still finding consistency to be elusive.

CA farmers markets are magical. I sampled a grapefruit at a small market in San Luis Obispo a few months ago that blew my mind. Also bought a blood orange that smelled like actual perfume.

We get great peaches from a local CSA and we can also find them at farmer’s markets. Supermarket peaches are all picked too early these days for shipping and shelf stability. Same with nectarines — nectarines from the store don’t even taste like nectarines to me.

Agree with everyone that good peaches have become scarce as hen’s teeth lately. It’s kind of sad, because when I do eat a good peach, I want MORE, dangit! ????

On the plus side, Mr. Jalapeno did bring home some excellent nectarines from Costco recently. They were so sweet and juicy that we had to eat them standing over the kitchen sink! Not sure we will get lucky again, though.

EdM, it’s my little zing of wonderful to start the day.

Happy solstice! Anyone notice an uptick in anxiety or other mental health concerns? I’m super tired today. Reach out if you need help, share if you feel comfortable. 😉

Amazing photo up top of this post. NASA has some great ones. The Big Blue Marble is one of my favorites, it’s a classic.

Some people think both the summer and winter solstices can affect mood and ramp up anxiety and other mental health issues. I’m not sure myself, but there could be a connection. We are made of stardust after all.

I suppose that today makes me somewhat anxious because I know the sunlight will start decreasing. The winter solstice perks me up, because I have the longer days to look forward to. I just hate winter so much. I get tired of saying it, but it’s true.

I am pretty proud of myself because I did not succumb to buying a back up bottle of Tibetan Mountain Temple…I have one full bottle and another bottle that is maybe 1/4 full which I have promised to a perfumista friend…thought about getting a back up but I won’t….I have to keep in mind that throughout my lifetime many many many perfumes that I loved were discontinued or reformulated and I have always found new ones to love….if I keep reminding myself of this I can over come the itch to purchase 🙂

I really need to ADORE a perfume in order to get a BUB. I have only few. Every time I think how much perfume I have, any need of a replacement goes away. I have been behaving pretty well this year. I am thinking of a fb of anything I would really love to buy for my birthday in November.

That’s a very good way of looking at it. I am fairly certain I don’t have BUBs of anything although the perfume bottles are floating all over my house so it is often hard to keep track.

A purchase once or twice a year for special occasion is an excellent idea.

    1) SOTD: Jasmin (Molinard) after a shower in Red Roses Soap. Perfect for the very hot and humid weather we have!

    2) Thunderstorms and showers this morning, cooling off the metro area a bit. But I am still gonna celebrate the solstice with a beer party at my house.

Very good projection with all in the purple line, very clean with a white musk underpinning all. Jasmin is super clean, rosy and not overly sweet nor indolic- great for everyday. Layers beautifully.

    SOTD = Kilian Noir Aphrodisiaque

    Because
    https://boisdejasmin.com/2018/06/by-kilian-noir-aphrodisiaque-perfume-review.html

On hajusuuri’s Day Off last month, I did a quick drop by at the Kilian and the Parfums de Marly boutique as they were within spitting distance of the Whitney. I requested 2 samples from Kilian, one of which was Noir Aphrodisiaque. My wallet is now cursing this development…between what I wanted to explore further and the “validation” from BdJ, I am now lemming a bottle. Le sigh ????. Has anyone tried this? What do you think?

Let’s see, how do I associate this with BBH? Well, BBH has a contemplative look on her face. Maybe she’s thinking of the night to come…

For those who missed it yesterday as I posted really late, do go to yesterday’s SOTD thread to read all about Life-Changing Things (if you must know, it’s a not so new product I recently discovered – Clorox toilet wand cleaning system).

Hello everyone, I bet I beat Robin at sleeping in this morning. I turned off my alarm at 9:30 and when I woke up it was 11:59! I can’t believe the cats were not meowing at me to hurry up and get out of bread and open some cans for them! I have become a night owl lately and stayed up late binge-watching DCI Banks on Amazon Prime. I am wearing some lavish splashes from a small sample of A Lab on Fire’s Paris*LA. The connection to the painting is tenuous but might work, since it’s the two cities meeting. A combination of lime, ginger, coriander, thyme–I know there are other notes including coca-cola and macaron–but I’m not picking them up. This is awfully nice and seems like a good painting for summer. Perhaps it’s complicated and adventurous enough for the BHH to be wearing. Perhaps I need a bottle of it?

I took a Benadryl and washed off all areas that I applied perfume to. I guess there is NOT a full bottle of this in my future. Sad. It’s only the second time this has ever happened to me. The other was Spezie de Medici. Instant hives with that. I wish I knew what they both have so I could avoid it in future. Scary. It’s pitch black and minus 1 here so there would be ice on top of the swimming pool …I think I will wear Dead of Winter as a nod to the solstice. Our prime minister gave birth to a girl yesterday and her partner is going to be the stay at home caregiver. We have a big rugby match between the all blacks and france this weekend so there will be a ton of blokes wandering around the place. And my son is going to a school formal…I think ‘formals’ are a fairly recent thing here with all that expectation of dressing up and wearing a suit. Got a few of my boxes from out of storage since I moved yesterday and I’m so thrilled to have access to a big chunk of my perfume collection again. Wearing Freschiiissimo. Still a summer fave. Yay!

Congratulations on the move! Unpacking is so much better than packing, and that perfume retrieval sounds like the best part of all. Enjoy!!!!

SOTD is Md’O Oudh Osmanthus. Wanting to see if this will wear as well in the summer as it does in the winter, so we’ll see. Catching up to last week’s poll, since it’s at the top of my FB wishlist right now.

Sleeping late twins with Robin today! It started off grey and rainy for the first day of summer, so I didn’t want to get out of bed. Now it’s a sauna outside.

SOTD = L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore EdP, from the sample stash, and a generous NSTer. This has a mouth-watering Turkish delight note in it to my nose. Yummy!

Finally home to Edinburgh, arriving back this evening to perfect low summer night red-golden light, with the crags and Arthur’s seat and castle rock just glowing on the skyline–the sort of loveliness that stops you in your tracks.

A delayed flight, so mooched around the airport perfumes. Fortunately Terminal 5 at heathrow has a lot of interesting things to sniff. I managed to get a good generous smear of Cardamusc before the Hermes SA got to me…that’s nice but not over £10 per ml nice. Ouch! Happy to know that there’s somewhere to get Encens Mythique 20% cheaper than RRP though: the wee Guerlain kiosk had a pretty impressive range. More Amouage than I’ve seen anywhere in ages. Got a whiff of the Chanel eaux, but was not thrilled by them.

“the sort of loveliness that stops you in your tracks”…one day I will get to Scotland….Mr. CM8 is part Scottish so maybe I can talk him into it….and every time I hear/read Edinburgh I think of my all time favorite author Alexander McCall Smith.

I meant to try my new sample of Ananas Fizz today and never got around to it. Any fans?

I have a decant. I think it’s fun, in a spritz and enjoy it for a few hours sort of way!

Happy Almost Friday everyone. Very busy day today. And this week still isn’t over? It finally stormed a bit so it broke the heat but its humid as heck. I have just sprayed myself with lots of Heure Exquise.

Which Heure Exquise do you have, the EdP or EdT?

What are the differences that you notice between them?
