Thursday scent of the day 5/31

Posted by Robin on 31 May 2018 259 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and Almost-June! What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: at the beach in Parfums de Nicolaï Musc Monoï.

Reminder: on 6/1, wear something milky or creamy in honor of World Milk Day (and the start of Dairy Month).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Beach sounds great! I’m wearing Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze today, it has a lovely figgy cream note. Have a good day, all.

    You smell great Robin!
It’s a public holiday here in Poland today so I’m having a day off. It’s 30*C outside. I’m wearing Cedrat Enivrant by Atelier Cologne.
    Fighting heat with a perfume.

SOTD is Jacomo Art Collection #08. It imitates the aroma of chai tea, so it has a milk note.
Speaking of tea scents, today I ordered a sample of Berdoues Assam of India. Though I will not get the cute bottle, I will finally try the perfume which you, Robin, enjoy so much. 🙂

I hope you like it, but do understand it’s just a very basic thing and without the elephants, I do not see why any perfumista would care about it either way! (I can see why they’d wear it because it is fine — I would wear it regardless — but it would not be worth getting excited over)

It’s OK. I read the reviews before ordering a sample, so my expectations are reasonable, I think. I like the combination of tea and lemon and I am always curious about perfumes having these two notes. Besides, it’s getting hot here, so I guess I’ll enjoy it as a refreshing scent for hot weather. If not, there is always layering, using it to scent a bath, giving it away…

In L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme. Green and milky fig scent perfect for the uncomfortable cloudy, muggy day we have here.

Looking forward for tomorrow desperately, since the last two days here at work have been insane. Crossing fingers I do not have to work this weekend…

I also love PFE, but so fleeting on me.
Not so many milky/creamy options for the humidy we have here. Most of what I have in that category are winter perfumes.

True, fig scents are probably the only milky scents for hot weather. I though about them too, but unfortunately the only ‘fig scent’ I currently have is AA Figue Iris (not much fig, not creamy or milky at all), so I had to pass this option.

Glannys, It might sound very strange, but I never heard of Figue Iris before! You know I am an iris obsessed and I am always looking to try any perfume with that note. At the same time I also love fig perfumes. The combination sounds very appealing to me. Can you please let me know a bit about that perfume?

        • Glannys says:
          31 May 2018 at 4:32 pm

(Could not reply to your comment below, so I am doing it here.)

AA Figue Iris = Guerlain Acqua Allegoria Figue – Iris. One of the earlier scents in Acqua Allegoria line, so no wonder that you do not know it.

As I said, I don’t get much fig here, it’s more like a dry fig leaf, I guess. (But some people can smell a lot of fig here, so maybe you will too.)

I only briefly tested it yesterday, and my impression was that Figue Iris is more about iris and violet. Powdery and ‘makeup-y’, a light sweet floral with some fruity and green notes. A pretty perfume in Guerlain style.

Should layer well with another Acqua Allegoria I have, Rosa Pop (a rose violet scent).

          I hope this helps!

            31 May 2018 at 5:10 pm

Oh, and I just found out that Guerlain Promenade des Anglais, released in 2016, is supposed to be a reissue of discontinued Figue – Iris. I have not tried Promenade des Anglais, so I cannot compare them.

          • perfumelover67 says:
            31 May 2018 at 9:49 pm

Thank you! I saw that Figue Iris was discontinued, but I definitely have to try Promenade des Anglais. To my sample list goes.

I have not tried the original Premier Figuier, but I read that it is greener and the fig note is more pronounced than the PFE. I love green fragrances, so I eventually will get a sample to compare it.

It’s overcast and muggy here. I should be weeding the front flower beds but I do. not. feel. like it. I will play hooky, in four generous spritzes of Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet, and pretend that I’ve just weeded.

I will be shutting down the sale of unloved fragrances on the blog tomorrow, so if you want one more shot at them, this is your last chance. 🙂 After this, they get shot over to eBay.

Been meaning to comment on the shampoo recs question: I like Wella Elements – I buy the big bottles of it at Ulta when they have their sales. However, I read a reddit post recently that pointed out that the how you apply conditioner maybe more important than which one – the big new takeaway for me was that you should only “drizzle rinse” your conditioner (after you’ve squished enough into your hair to make your strands feel like squishy noodles) rather than trying to wash it all out. It really helped me with my color treated hair, and I don’t feel it’s weighing my fine hair down either. Perhaps worth a try!

I feel just the opposite but I probably have thinner hair. I condition my hair first with a pea size amount, rinse my hair, then shampoo. Otherwise, I can’t use conditioner at all as it makes my hair flat with absolutely no body.

    SotD = 24 Faubourg EdT

I love this one dearly, but it seems to give me a headache if I spray more than once. It is a new-ish bottle, so I’m tempted to chase after vintage. Sigh.

Yesterday I stopped in to sniff at Sephora. Iris Rebelle is a super wonderful iris that reminds me of Hiris (yay!) but with enough white musk in the drydown (boo!) to make it a no for me. It averages out to “yay” since that’s one less bottle to covet.

Also wandered through Nordstrom and found Eau de Citron Noir. It has wonderful citrus and the spike-y smelling woody base many men’s colognes share. What is that? Guaiac? I tried and liked Eau d’Orange Verte.

There was a tester bottle of the nsfw Fabulous scent too. The profane part of the name was covered, but the boxes behind it were uncensored, LOL. Naughty, naughty Nordies!

Wheeeeeee my massive SSS order came in!!!! (Just two days after Laurie shipped it!) So I smell fantabulous in Equestrian 🙂 Hay and apples! It smells like it would go perfectly with a very ripe cheese. I’m so thrilled I got a chance to throw all my money at her. (Though I did get nine different perfumes for almost exactly the same amount of money I almost spent on a single bottle of Affinessence Santal Basmati when I was in Paris last month.)

I know I am not following the community project–a project I quite like, too! and I have Venenum, and a sample of Kulfi, either of which would be perfect for tomorrow!–but I will probably wear a new SSS treasure tomorrow, too.

Oooh Equestrian sounds GOOD! Semi-related: one of my favorite smells of all time is the smell of freshly-picked apples. Still trying to find a perfume (or scented candle, perhaps?) that replicates that smell, but I admit it might be impossible.

Haven’t tried that one, but I’ll be on the lookout. Thanks! It’s tricky to find a good apple scent that doesn’t just smell like a Jolly Rancher. I think there’s an apple note in Herbal Essences Shine Collection shampoo that I really like, but I haven’t found a perfume that replicates that either.

I meant to say that the hay is kind of manure-y. That’s why it would go so well with stinky cheese! Fresh, sweet-ish manure. The kind I smelled a LOT of on my long weekend up in Tomales Bay, which is full of dairy farms.

Happy day all!????I got in an order of soaps and scent samples from ZOMG smells. She does them on a variety of themes, some from science/ astronomy and fan creations. I’m trying the Nuremberg Pudding Incedent soap. It references the awesome Girl Genius web comic by the Foglio’s. ????I think it definitely fits the project this week milky creamy pudding with a sort of rich buttery slightly earthy gram cracker note. I’m really liking it. I’ll probably dab on some of the Bownian Motion and see how the chocolate note holds up.

So far I quite like them. The Brownie-in-motion was deliciously chocolaty, fading into a soft powdery skin scent. Not a whole lot of longevity but loads of fun to wear during a workout or befor a shower. ????I think these will make great around-the-house scents for me, when I don’t feel like wearing something more expensive just to do chores in. Tomorrow I’m gonna try the Cheesecake Hunting Saddle. ????

I decided I needed some Au The Rouge today. In the past, I’ve often worn this one when I wanted something I really liked (but it had to be something that didn’t shout out too much to other people). Just noticed that the bottle is close to being empty, but I know I can get more from the local discounters, as I see it there a lot.

    Hey Guys! Happy Thursday!

    1) SOTD: Venetian Bergamont (TF) – perfect for this cool grey and green day! Too bad it is discontinued HOWEVER Cap Neroli I feel fits the gap – and is way more attainable.

    2) My bank was absorbed by another bank and did not send out a new card, so my card expires at midnight tonight. Despite filling out a change of address form and receiving regular mail FROM the bank, the bank went ahead and sent the new card to old address. When I pointed out that I did what I was supposed to, I was told that I would have wait another 2 weeks for my card OR pay to have it expedited to me.
And yeah, new bank for me. This is not a promising way to treat a customer of 18 years after a merger*. GRRRR.
So I am think either the evil Bank of America which has branches galore and certain benefits OR a local credit union- with less branches, more fees but better service and better financial books.
This adulting business is for the birds.

Hate BoA!! Just my opinion, but go with the credit union, especially since you are not “on the road” all the time. I went with a very small bank from home and I’m still able to do everything pretty conveniently. I have an insurance reimbursment check coming that I can deposit via electronic banking and then send them the physical check. I don’t even have paper checks for bills. Everything is on-line, which I know some people don’t like but it’s essential for me. It’s nice to call my bank in Florida, have a human pick up the phone, and immediately get help should I need it.

The cu that I am looking at has online banking, lots of branches in the state and in PDX and a ton of financial products, which is VERY impressive indeed. I can do all my bills online and get auto deposit as well. And the fees are modest.

As an employee of a credit union, I will wholeheartedly yell CREDIT UNION! It looks like you have lots of options in Portland (I’m in Seattle). If you’re worried about not having enough branches look for a CU that is part of the CO-OP network and participates in shared branching. Shared branching means you can visit other credit union branches to transact as long as they’re in the network. And they’re all through the US so you can easily find free ATMs and even branches when you travel. It’s a pretty cool thing that I knew nothing about before I started working for a CU.

I am a member of a CU in Seattle that has a huge, nationwide network (including banking at 7-11, which I’ve never done, but is good to know.) It’s slightly less convenient than using one of the few mega banks that still exist, but I don’t get nickled & dimed to death. I admittedly harbor a lot of resentment toward the mega banks so would never use one, but I also really like and appreciate the Credit Union model, which has a totally different operational approach to banking for everyday folks.

          1) I think 7-11 is owned by a Japanese company- so in Japan, a lot of 7-11 provide amazing services, include POS banking- so the 7-11 functions the way post offices used to in the USA. So it would not surprise me that CU systems had an agreement with 7-11.
          2) The MegaCorp Banks play a important role in our society but they seem so wicked.

We have quite a few CUs down here, which really shocked me. The one I am considering is one of the biggest in Oregon, with online banking and EVERYTHANG so I would not really really miss the services provided by my regional bank.
I too have a wariness about MegaCorp Banks; they fulfill an important purpose in our society BUT they also seem very wicked.

Oh yes. You need to find a new bank and let the old one know exactly why. That is inexcusable for them to want to charge you to expedite because of their mistake. I’ve had banks waive that fee as a matter of course.

SOTD is CdG Grace Coddington, a very beautiful and yet fresh, not too heavy or weighty, rose scent, very kindly sent me by NST-er Nancyleandros. Thank you, my fellow Texan, for being so sweet! I just looked this up to read more about it and THAT BOTTLE!! All cat lovers MUST have it, and I’m going to order it ASAP! This is very smooth, so maybe kinda creamy in that sense, but I’ll try for something more truly milky tomorrow.

I’m working on a Sultan Pasha Attars sample pack, so not wearing anything milky. I am somewhat obsessed with the idea of real oud and sandalwood these days. Not sure if I will actually get into that (the credit cards hope not) or if I just enjoy reading about it, but I am enjoying the SPA samples so far.

The only milky scents that come to mind are Frapin 1697, which is more of a winter scent, and L’AP Havana Vanille/Vanille Absolument, which does work well in warmer weather, although I would usually wear it in late summer/early fall.

I feel like one of the 4160 Tuesdays also had a milky note but can’t remember which one.

Now see that’s an example of why I don’t get the concept of milky scents. Why is Havana Vanille milky? I’m sincerely asking. That’s one I have, but wouldn’t have thought of. Is it something about that smooth vanilla aspect? In that case perhaps Anima Dulcis would also count? I’m trying to learn here. I can grasp “buttery” but not so much “milky.”

I guess it smells like slightly spicy vanilla ice cream to me. To me, there is definitely a milky note that, initially, I’m not sure I like, and it makes HV smell very different from other vanilla perfumes, to my nose.

I do ultimately appreciate HV very much in late summer when I’m tired of “fresh” scents and have a hard time finding anything I can stand to wear in the heat and humidity here.

The Frapin smells like spicy creme brulee and cognac to me.

But this is all totally subjective, of course.

I haven’t sniffed Anima Dulcis for a long time, but you could be right.

Wearing Kelly Calèche today as I have an appointment at the bank to take over the accounts there. Then I’ll visit the other places.

Spent much of yesterday in a closet…partly fascinating, partly crazy. A bunch of old useless mail and calendars…my Dad kept all his old big, desk calendars (the kind that cover the desk surface) going back to 2001. Old medical records and virtually every MRI or X-ray he or my mom had done.

But, I also found an old satchel filled with memorabilia related to my Dad’s father. He died when my dad was 14 in mid 1942. I only knew that he was on a ship in the Persian Gulf as part of the WWII war effort – civilian contractor. He mysteriously disappeared from the ship one night. The satchel has letters and reports/accounts of the search and witnesses. He was in bed, then he was seen fully dressed at 1:15 am, then never seen again. My grandmother obviously tried very hard to find out what happened. His passport was returned…it was only good for certain countries (Iran, Iraq, India…) and for a limited time. There’s also a receipt for some cattle he bought in Montana in the 30’s and some other stuff I haven’t looked at yet. It’s really weird how he disappeared.

I did know that he had disappeared but I didn’t know any real details. Or the actual location. The written accounts are a bit creepy because it’s just so odd. My grandmother was devastated, and I’m not quite sure she ever really recovered. They were comfortably well off, even through the depression. All that changed. It does make me sad…my Dad was an only child, so it was quite the burden. I’ve always wished I’d known my grandfather. He had such a pleasant face in photos. My sister also found letters he had written before he left…talking about the war and how difficult it was going to be.

I am trying to get my mom to answer some questions about our family history before it’s too late. Since she has dementia, it’s sort of hit or miss. She tells me there’s more information “in the boxes” which are all stored in her basement. I’ll have to see. Sometimes you don’t take advantage of these resources in time, and then it’s irreversible. Having seen friends go through that, you’d think I’d know better. (sigh)

    SOTD!Nobile 1942 Cafe Chantant.My bottle is almost drained!Cozy perfume on a cold day.It’s my favorite vanilla+black cherries gourmand.Delicious.
I had a question from one of my friends here on NST regarding the perfumed letters.
I know NST-ers are a bunch of SUPERGENEROUS guys and girls, but please do not feel the need to include samples or perfumes in the letter. Our postal services has become very unreliable, and restrictions are getting more strict on sending and receiving of “THE DANGEROUS GOODS”.Lol.But understandably so as well.So thank you for the kind thought and gesture, but rather just send me a good old fashioned,handwritten,sexy-smelling(haha!) letter!
    Happy Thursday!

I don’t see the brand mentioned often, but Cafe Chantant is definitely worth seeking out if you like soft and cozy gourmand-ish vanilla perfumes.
        Plus black cherries of course.
Casta Diva is my other favorite from them.
Not to forget Pontevecchio W!Beautiful Iris-y perfume, and reminds me A LOT of Eluzabeth Arden Blue Grass.

I’m only going to wear a creamy perfume tomorrow because I’m still taking advantage of having an office all to myself. I’m in Areej le Dore Flux de Fleur, a spoil from the last swap meet. It’s strong and expensive smelling, rightly so. It starts off with a heavy fruity bubblegum vibe until we get into the middle phase an hour and a half in. I’m trying to decide if I should sample the rest of the line that’s currently available on Luckyscent. The sample are expensive, and I can’t imagine paying the price for a bottle if I end up liking one enough. Hmm.

I didn’t have time to check in yesterday because of a busy work day, but I was drooling over myself all day in Papillon Anubis. I was late to try this one and am completely enamored.

The Areej le Dore are so strong — I think my samples will last forever! The one that I did buy was the Wallimah attar directly from the Areej le Dore website (shipped from Thailand). The main reason was that the beautiful little bottle of attar happens to be the least expensive offering. The scent is beautiful, too.

    SOTD + FM Carnal Flower

I had been thinking about this since Jalapeno mentioned wearing it on Tuesday, so here I am.

Carnal Flower is lush voluptuous white flowers – big fat airy tuberose and gardenia. The coconut makes it even creamier.

    Commuting Woes No.430:

Never trust a guy wearing red suede shoes. I guess it’s really not NOT trust but I will categorize the guy as being ummm ummm high maintenance and has the male equivalent of B-itchy Resting Face. I stood right next to such a guy on a very crowded train and he insisted on resting his whole body against pole real estate. I don’t want to fall so I insisted on holding on to the pole and he went all pouty. Well tough luck for him! So he then decided to switch to lean against the pole on his left side but the train was really crowded so someone else’s hand was bothering him. Again, tough luck.

I’ve encountered pole hogs here in DC, too, and one was just unbelievable — when I put my hand around the pole in order not to fall, he loudly asked me not to touch him!

Perhaps I should have said something first, but he was on the opposite side of the pole facing away from me — I would have had to tap him on the shoulder to get his attention, and asking him to remove his body from the pole would have called attention to his thoughtlessness, so I hadn’t though that was tactful, either. It was AM and the train was crowded so I just glowered at him.

I don’t get how anyone thinks hogging the pole is OK.

Now I can’t go out berry-picking any more but just have to find some in the supermarket. I miss those days. These were black raspberries and my mom would make them into a crumble and it was SO delicious! (She always made me clean them first, though.)

I tested a couple of things early this a.m., one being TF Vert Boheme. Perplexing – while I did not try them side-by-side, it is essentially a carbon copy of Cristalle edp.

Moved on from that to No 19 Poudre – I love the opening but am not so much of a fan of the drydown. Sprayed myself down with LL L’Eau en Blanc once Poudre got to that part. It’s a nice combo. L’Eau en Blanc was one of those love-at-first-sniffs for me, but I’ve been wearing it a ton this spring and have developed an appreciation for it on a whole new level. It’s so easy to wear and always smells good and always works: day, night, warm, cold, evening out, doctor’s office, bedtime, etc.

We had unusually summery weather earlier this month that lasted for so long it was easy to be lulled into thinking it was here to stay. Not so. Back to usual June weather – cool, overcast, rain and wind likely. Too cold for sandals but I’m wearing them anyway. *sigh*

Started out the day in CdG Wonderwood, so I could mark another sample finished for May. It’s nice, I liked it, but I don’t need a bottle or a decant of it.
I feel the same about Arquiste L’Etrog, from the leaky sample set. It’s a nice, summery citrus, but I have that category is well covered….and this one is pricey.

I was pretty sure it was my day off today when I woke this morning so I sprayed on some Goutal Heure Exquise on 1 forearm and some eau Hadrien on the other. Then I remembered that I had one more day to go. I was a bit worried but hopeful to fly under the radar today and luckily I did as no one commented ‘do you have perfume on?’

Goutals seem to be so well blended that I may be able to be light handed and get away with it for day-time at the office. Mine are vintage so the top notes may not be there making it easier to get away with.

In other news my hubby and I have started ‘tomato wars’ in our little garden area. He bought one he liked and I got one I liked tonight on our way home after work, both different varieties. He couldn’t wait for me to change into gardening clothes after work to help him plant it ‘properly’ so IT’S ON..

Now I’m in some Vol de Nuit EDT for my SOTE.

I would love to have real tomato plants. All I have is a tiny « patio tomato » plant the woman at the nursery said would work on my window box planter. I don’t have much confidence it will produce any actual edible tomatoes though.

As long as they get alot of sun and enough water plus some liquid fertilizer every other week or so (I like to alternate between 20/20/20 and Miracle Grow) you should be good; they are voracious feeders. They like a bit of depth for the roots as well.

Have fun. The only way I learned was trial and error????

I love that – Tomato Wars!

Sunday morning I woke up thinking it was Monday and I am going to be late for work. Imagine my delight that work was still 2 days away!
