Wednesday scent of the day 5/23

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2018 233 Comments

It's Hump Day and Lucky Penny Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm earning double points (and smelling delicious) in A Lab On Fire Paris*LA.

Reminder: on 5/25 we're doing Oh the Places You’ll Go...wear a perfume with a place name. Suggested by Elisa.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, you smell great—but remind me why it’s double points?

I’m in Theorema Esprit d’Ete for no points other than smelling delicious. Happy Hump Day!

I do not know your scent, Robin, but a great choice for the CP.

I am in Dior Escale a Portofino – lemonade for your macarons. 😉

Wallowing in Bottega Veneta thanks to a generous NSTer sending me a decant and triggering an instant need.

Technically, Bottega translates to workshop, which is a (non-specific) place, but frankly, I simply wanted to smell incredible, and theis scent does that.

Bottega Veneta translates to Venetian workshop, so you definitely get points! ???? It is one of my favorites as well. I finished a bottle a few months ago and replaced it already.

I get cola from Coromandel when I wear it during summer. Mostly as a sleep scent… ????

That’s an odd connection there; I wonder why (i.e., what note in it triggers the association?).
For awhile I used to like Boucheron Trouble, until a friend commented that it smelled like root beer. I could never un-smell it and wound up giving that bottle away.
Hopefully the Cola association isn’t ruining Coromandel for you–doesn’t sound like it.

What I love about Coromandel in the heat is that it brings out the incense notes. The cola is there too but it doesn’t bother me. I actually prefer it during summer. I almost never reach for it during winter. I’m weird I guess.

Has anyone tried Cola by Outramer? It smells just like you popped open a can of Coca Cola. And for $20 @ smallflower in’s an easy cheap thrill. ???? sometimes I layer it with their Vanilla for something a little sweeter.

Terrible storm last night. Commando today, since I’ll be cleaning up tree limbs that are all over lawn & drive. Gutters are also clogged with debris, so need to call someone to clear them. I am tired of this rainy weather. At least sunny today. Maybe a scented bath this eve.

Thanks everyone for all your good wishes and prayers regarding my mother’s fall. They were much needed and appreciated. She was admitted in the hospital and most likely will be discharged tomorrow. She had a concussion with minor bleeding in the brain. Lots of pain in the neck and back and strong headaches. She will be fine and will follow up with the neurologist next week.

Today, I am in Kyoto for some comfort and peace and it goes with the CP. Drinking tons of coffee to keep myself awake on a busy day at work.

    Stay safe and healthy everyone!

I think you need to be in the mood for it – when I tried it the very first time, all I could think of was “orange cream soda” and “why do people love this?”. Then I wore it out for a night of beer and pizza with friends and my friend kept saying how I smelled so good…and I reevaluated and found she was right! It’s not for work, perhaps not even always for daytime, but past noon on a hot day or any evening, it’s really great, I think. So – don’t give up yet – and don’t spray too hard 🙂

Great pick this morning Robin! I’ll have to dig out my sample of What We Do In Paris Is Secret.
I had a Dr apt this AM so my only scent at the moment is the No. 19 soap from my morning shower. SOTD will be Brookyn by Gallivant. I’ve had this sample for a while but it didn’t make much of an impression. First full wearing today so we’ll see how it goes.

Casmir! (thanks for the reminder lillyjo????)

Did anyone start watching PBS’ The Great American Read? I’ve been looking forward to see what made the list. So many good books! So many books I need to read!! One of my childhood favorites-Where the Red Fern Grows- made the cut. I still have a signed copy from when Wilson Rawls made a visit to my tiny little elementary school. One of my childhood treasures I can’t part with.

That photo makes me think of CM8.

We watched the first part too. We have an appletv which basically lets us watch on demand. Apparently the full series will launch September 11…????I don’t think that gives me enough time to read and re-read all 100, unless I quit my job and give up the internet. Wouldn’t be a bad way to spend the summer though!

I have a signed copy of Summer of the Monkeys too. He came to our school in December and of course I wanted both books. My parents said I could choose one. Well…my dad taught math and science at said school and secretly got Summer signed for me. When my birthday rolled around in January, you can guess what one of my gifts was.☺️

I’ve read that one. The selected memoir excerpts were terrific for the minute descriptions of the city. Also so so sad when you think of what is left of Aleppo today. I’ve just started Scott Anderson’s Lawrence in Arabia, which came out a couple of years ago. So far it has been a super great read. Loving it!

The longevity is fine, but it definitely becomes a skin scent pretty quickly. Hours later, I can still smell it on my wrist, but the reviews seem to vary, so it might depend a lot on your skin

I’m trying Week-End for the first time. I got a sample from Luckyscent when I bought a bottle of L’Eau de Sport. I figure I should get partial points since it used to be called Week-End à Deauville. I will have to finish this sample, but I may see a full bottle on my horizon.

Oh I have that one, and it was not on my very short list of perfumes I own with place names. Mine is the formulation with Deauville in the name. Now if only the weather would cooperate and warm up. We’re having a drippy, cold day and I need something cozy to wear (Week-End is a great perfume, but not particularly cozy—does well in heat.)

Mine also has the Deauville in the name. I adore this perfume, especially in summertime. Thanks to Oakland Fresca I purchased a full bottle 2 years ago and it is almost finished. I will definitely get a back up bottle.

You both are lucky because the current Week-End isn’t the same formula as the original Deauville version. I much prefer the Deauville to what’s currently out. I’d recommend sampling the current version before you rebuy! It’s not bad, but it didn’t do much for me.

2 Instagram Photos today! It’s your lucky day, NST! HA HA HA

Robin is smelling soooo nice….Paris LA is a goody! I have a sample and will probably have to get a full bottle at some point, because I live in Coca-Cola central,. after all! Should be named Paris Atlanta? 🙂

I’m wearing Montale Intense Cafe and enjoying the fragrant hit of coffee this morning. Perfume Grinch is on a 3 week fishing trip in Montana, so I can wear what I like for a while! Notice that the Grinch is NOT grinchy in the slightest when he’s catching walleye for dinner! https://www.instagram.com/p/BjH3xG4HHrU/?taken-by=jadainga99

Still raining raining raining raining today in Atlanta…..steamy and humid, but my flower seedlings are thriving and sprouting up like crazy. It doesn’t seem to bother “my” geese babies either! Check out today’s baby picture below…Mama is very diligent about using the crosswalks! #SafetyFirst

Oh it is a hard sell for me to love those Canada geese. We have a beautiful lake in the middle of Oakland, Lake Merritt, that is the oldest bird sanctuary (well, an island in the middle of it) in the country—which is great when we get all sorts of exotics flying in for the bird holidays. But we also have too many Canada geese who defile the grass and gardens around the lake and periodically block the streets. Yesterday I was rushing home for a conference call and got stuck waiting for about 30 geese to decide which side of the street they wanted to head to.

I’m wearing ELDO Noel au Balcon today. This was my Scentbird pick for this month. I had totally forgotten I put this in my queue. I thought there was a mistake and that I was supposed to get Eric Buterbaugh Apollo Hyacinth. Turns out that’s next month. Surprises aside, I like this one a lot. It’s a bit on the sweet side, but it’s got enough spice to it that it’s not *too* sweet.

The oil itself is VERY soothing: a blend of plant oils, with fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil jojoba oil, olive oil and lemongrass essence. You will smell slightly lemony+herb+nutty. It’s really nice to use after your morning shower and a little does go a long way. If you wear citrusy colognes and eau de parfums during the summer then I think this would be a great way to layer.

I am sadly not participating in the CP today. I was going to wear Santal de Mysore, which of course would have worked, but I was feeling too congested for anything as delicate as the dabbing of my pulse points with a gorgeous perfume bought as a souvenir (that’s right, Donatella!) in Paris. So instead I am wearing Maison Lancome Parfait de Roses from a decant generously provided to me by cazaubon, mostly because of a review March wrote of it in Perfume Posse. I don’t get the same experience from it that she does, but I still find it beautiful and well made, though very sweet.

Looking forward to the upcoming three-day weekend! The boyfriend and I are taking the trip we were supposed to take for our last anniversary–last June–and going upstate to a cottage from which we will eat all the oysters, sail, kayak, and hike. And eat oysters. I could do with a break.

Robin, that scent sounds so delish! Off to order a sample now! I stopped in Sephora yesterday for the first time in ages and got a sample of Atelier Clementine California, as someone had mentioned it the other day. It’s been a while since I tried Orange Sanguine, but seems pretty similar. Also very close to AA Mandarine Basilic, which I have a bottle of so money saved!

Late reply, but it is a fun scent, and Mandarine Basilic is better than any of the ACs IMHO 🙂

Finished a sample of Le Jardin de Monsieur Li. Since it is a garden belonging to Mr. Li or specifically dedicated to him, I’m considering it a place. This seems to be discontinued. It’s not on the Hermès site.

I walked out this morning to collect the garbage/recycling bins and was struck by the soft air, sunshine and breeze. It may be cold and foggy over the hills, but in this part of the East Bat, it is perfect. Interestingly, it reminded me of the sound and feel of the air up in the Sierras where we had a cabin. Not scented the same, obviously. But that very soft caress and perfect temperature. Crisp yet warm. I had a memory moment.

I just counted: I have 19 pennies in my wallet. I have no idea how it happened since I almost never pay cash. One of the pennies is actually my lucky penny, I keep it with me for the last probably 10 years. It was minted in 1942.

Wearing Terrasse à St-Germain by Jul et Mad. I put it on just to participate in the project because I couldn’t locate a bottle of another perfume that I planned to wear today and it was time to go. It is a very well made and balanced perfume but it definitely is not my favorite from the line.

Burberry Brit Sheer. I am moving away from SJP Lovely for my daily work wear, since the weather is warming up.
I have to fly under the radar at work, and this is laundry musk enough to pass as dryer sheet, but i also really like it, so it’s in the maybe pile.
Other contenders are Joie Folle de Joie and Chanel Chance Eau Tendre. Both if which i love.

    Decisions, decisions.

I decided to glam it up today with

    SOTD = 31 Rue Cambon

Gorgeous day for a stroll on the High Line. The last time I walked it, I went from south (Whitney Museum) to north (Hudson Yards).

We had lunch at Bubby’s, matzo ball soup, the most divine biscuits (I got a doggie bag), fried chicken and a banana pie. Yunmm.

At the Whitney right now, resting after a fabulous insider tour of the Conservation Lab.

I will now visit the Grant Wood exhibit before heading out to indulge in some sniffing!

I, too, was surprised. I liked his use of “Europy” to describe being influenced by European artists with whom he trained.

As to the High Line, it is absolutely worth it to go but only if the weather is decent!

    SotD = Bucoliques de Provence

An homage to the lavender and leather of Grasse, an oddly interesting iris. Can’t make up my mind if I like it, though I keep sniffing.

Just read that Histoires d’Orangers is inspired by the city of Taroudant in Morocco. That one I will wear again, and again, and again . . .

    hajusuuri’s Day Off Part 2

I did a cursory visit of the Grant Wood exhibit at the Whitney and made sure I saw American Gothic (I always thought they were meant to be husband and wife but they were actually father and daughter).

Indeed I was spitting distance from the Kilian boutique and I stopped by. Since the last time I was there, the boutique now has most of the perfumes lined up on a bar with porcelain (or some other synthetic stone) sniffers. I left with a sample each of Love Don’t be Shy and Noir Aphrodisiac.

Then I went to Parfums de Marly and the boutique manager remembered my full name (ok, she was one letter off spelling-wise of my last name) and I was gobsmacked because the first and only time I was there was 18 months ago with Sniffapalooza! Anyway, I smelled Delina EDP and Delina Exclusif on paper. OMG, I may need a full bottle of the Exclusif although now that I have it on skin, it may be too sweet. I should have asked for the EDP to compare. I have a plan to acquire several samples of the EDP before I decide on which one to buy.

My watch died and I dropped it off to have the battery replaced. I found it odd that I was asked how much I paid for it and I said it was an anniversary gift. Or maybe it was for insurance purposes?

I think that jewelry repair shops do ask for the value of items for insurance purposes, even for something like a battery change on a wristwatch. I seem to recall my mom being asked the same thing when the strap on a watch she had broke.

I’m thinking that it was for insurance as well. Mine had to be sent out to have the battery replaced as there is some kind of vacuum seal to be done to keep it water resistant. I was amused at the number she wrote down.

Powdery FRUITY floral with a musky vanilla base…sounds generic but there’s something really appealing about it that has me repeatedly sniffing my forearm to justify spending $300+ for 75 mLs.
