Tuesday scent of the day 5/22

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2018 293 Comments

It's Sherlock Holmes Day / Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Parfum d'Empire Corsica Furiosa. Tea at the moment is a Xiang Luo China Keemun from Upton.

Reminder: on 5/25 we're doing Oh the Places You’ll Go...wear a perfume with a place name. Suggested by Elisa.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Raynaud Verdures teapot, designed by Christian Tortu ("As in all his creations, Christian Tortu has taken his inspiration from the shapes and colours of nature. Leaves, stems and climbing plants decorate the white china, that has been elegantly finished with a gold rim.") is $509 at ArteDona.

Wearing a sample that arrived with the bottle of Tolu I am splitting with ta friend. Fumerie was fabulous sending several samples to try so today it is Orris Nior by OJ. It was the samples they sent me last time that tempted me to buy Tolu. Guess that plan is working! I am hoping it gets a bit warmer, not much sent currently but it is early and cool.

    Happy Tuesday!!
Yesterday was a holiday in Canada, so I lounged about and tested this and that.

Today, I am in Mancera Sicily for this week’s project. Enjoying the heck out of the pineapple note.

Where in Canada? It would be great if you visited Nova Scotia 🙂

I have another ‘Corsica’ scent planned for this week.

But today I am continuing with Spanish theme – L’Occitane Labdanum de Seville. Lovely amber/benzoin/labdanum.

Somebody please tell me why I don’t own a FB of this???? (I would be interested in a split of this hint hint) I must find my last sample maybe this to cheer me up!
I am a soggy sloggly saturated sponge.
I adore spring, but even though my wisteria smells so beautiful right now, my peonies have been pummeled by all this rain. It’s so dreary again this afternoon.

    Robin, you smell AWESOME!!

I’m in Lubin Epidor, which, according to beautyhabit’s description, could certainly be a “place” –

“Epidor is a bucolic fragrance that evokes harvest time, a season of utmost importance for farmers in the French countryside a century ago”

So, I’m in the French countryside harvesting and only about a hundred years old today, thank you very much!

I’m on a thankful kick this week, so I’ll go public and say thank god my rosacea that flared up in a big way in Oregon has now calmed down. Boy, those red cheeks were no joke!!

Hate that. Glad your rosacea is better. My right cheek is the sensitive one. Goes bright red and gets quite hot. Greek yogurt seems to be the biggest trigger.

Your scent sounds lovely. I’ll visit that place!

Mostly lurking here, but I just received the Tauer Magazine with a mini of the Les Années 25 this morning and have to share my enthusiasm for this 🙂 What a glorious scent! Lovely citrus at first, a little iris and caramel sandalwood later in a rich, powdery way. It feels both contemporary and oddly old fashioned at the same time. It is very, very hot here in Sweden today so this kind of fragrance really shouldn’t work, but it does. Wonderful!

Well I made the mistake of blind ordering Dame’s soliflore Freesia, which I was really disappointed by… but was it really a mistake? because it cost like $8 and came with a sample of Cactus Orchid, which I looooove and am wearing today. It reminds me of being inside a greenhouse. Not to enable but they also included a sample of their face cream and I think it is the face cream I have been waiting for my entire life.

My skin is dry-to-medium and I basically look for as much moisture as possible. What makes this one stand out to me is the texture – it goes on in a way I would describe as intensely moisturizing but also just sheer enough to wear during the day without looking or feeling greasy. A very light jasmine smell. Ha I’ve spent like 10 minutes trying to describe this texture but also they sell it in tiny sizes for like $5 so you can give it a low-risk try.

A different perspective: I find the face cream to be waaaaay too heavy. It was too thick for me in the winter, and inconceivably thick for the summer. It does smell perfect, though–a pale orange blossom. I want all my body products to smell like that.

Love the teapot & Sherlock. Anything British makes me re-live my all time favorite trip to London. Took me almost a lifetime to go across the pond, and it was worth it! If you like museums, nightlife, history, food & green spaces, please add to your bucket list. Oh, forgot the shopping! Bought a bottle of Stella on my trip & will wear it today to go with a gray, rainy day. It’s sort of on theme this week.

Wearing office-friendly Jimmy Choo Illicit. Forgot about the soft, sexy dry down of this Anne Filpo creation. Ginger fizz mixed with rose and jasmine. Quickly settles into honeyed amber and sandalwood, almost like egyptian musk. Stays that way for the rest of the day. Good stuff.

Started the day in Marc Jacobs Daisy, as I’m about to say farewell to it (hie thee to ebay, Daisy, I’ve outgrown you). Now that it’s fading — and THAT lasted all of two hours — I’ve added some Lubin Epidor next to it. They’re playing nicely together.

Added some new sale items to the blog, but am still in the process of adding pics.

In YSL Paris for a morning sitting with my mother in the ER. (I should be in Paris instead). She fell very early this morning and hit her head badly. Hope nothing very serious has happened to her. The waiting is going to be long and overwhelming, as usual. Day which will be spent online and sitting on my hands that that does not lead to any unexpected and unnecessary purchase…
    Take care everyone!

    SotD = Histoires d’Orangers

My happy place is an orange grove. 😀

Another pretty teapot this week! Christian Tortu is a name I did not know, google says he is a master florist. When I read his name I randomly recalled that tortu means cake in one of the European languages.

Oh, the places you’ll go . . . just remembered the book with that title. I adore Dr. Seuss’ books, I wonder if he liked perfume.

Hope everyone has a terrific Tuesday.

I find it difficult to give up books too. When I konmari’d my house a few years ago I was able to contain them to one very long shelf.

Many books went to new homes, though I kept two boxes of children’s books (from my childhood and my kids’) stored out of sight. They may go eventually, but I couldn’t let go of Green Eggs and Ham.

I know his name only because he had a fragrance — a green fragrance that would match that teapot! I don’t think he makes it anymore but there is still a line of home fragrance (Aedes has it).

Second (and final) impromptu splitmeet call: I’m thinking of ordering a set of 4 sprays from Sylvaine Delacourte. Each spray is 7.5ml, and each one can be selected individually, and can be a different scent. Depending on what shipping costs turn out to be, each spray should turn out to be about $20. SOTD Hermes Vanille Galante

left the house scentless, so found this sample in my purse. to me, began with a burst of gardenia, and settled into clove (I sometimes smell clove where there is supposed to be jasmine). very surprised this is a white floral! Have not looked it up tho – going to do so now…

I think that one is misnamed, and people get a lot of different things out of it. Smells like a salty banana to me (Robin mentions both of those in her review, so I’m not too crazy!).

I think banana and clove are related – yeasts in Belgian beers remind me of both of those sometimes.
It’s been a while since I smelled Alien – that one seemed mostly jasmine-y to me, I think.

I get a little banana from Vanille Galante, that’s one of the reasons I love it. It reminds me of ylang-ylang and the pink jasmine flowers that smell a bit banana-y. Sometimes vanilla beans smell faintly of banana too.

Hello, dear NSTers! Today I am resplendant in LADDM. I was initially intimidated by this week’s CP, then realized that I have way more than enough place name scents to last through the week.

For those of you who sent me kind wishes last week, my show on Saturday went well! It was a lot of fun, but I am thrilled it’s over, because work is still intense. I would take this opportunity to whine about how I had to get to work before 7:30 today, but I know a lot of you get to work even earlier, so the complaint doesn’t have the desired impact. I’ll just go find a bunch of grad students to complain to (“I don’t think mornings exist before 9”).

Hope you are well, dear friends! I’ve missed reading through your SOTDs lately.

I sympathize a lot! I’m not a morning person at all. Yes, being an adult, I have to do something I don’t like from time to time, and if I had to, I would have rearranged my schedule to go to bed and to get up earlier. But given a choice, I don’t like early mornings (but I can function well at 10-12 PM, which helps with offshore teams).
      Oh, and you smell great!

    1) Fight fight fight: Benedict Cumberbatch is fun, but long live Jeremy Brett! FIGHT ME.

    2) SOTD: Korres Jasmin shower gel, knock off Rodin oil in my hair and Molinard’s Jasmin. I smell very sweet, clean, rosy and jasmine-y.

    3) Tried on an old bikini. Will need to do more than stretching and walking to look a bit sleek for summer, I think!

I WILL FIGHT YOU. No one beats BC’s Sherlock. WAS THERE EVER A MORE DAMAGED MAN WHO COULD BE SAVED THROUGH MY LOVE?!

(I didn’t know that isn’t his natural hair color! What is?)

Anyway, Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes also always struck me as a buttface, so BC just lives up to that expectation for me.

OMG LOL! And that is why all the Cucumber fans are so gaga for him!

BC’s hair color is golden red, and in his early roles you will see him as a blond or redhead. Dyeing his hair for Sherlock really made him stand out!

SOTD Parfums Quartana Hemlock in a rash, rushed decision this morning. I have to be really in the mood for vanilla these days, but it’s working out nicely. The green notes and hint of vinyl keep it interesting.

Hello to all my NST scented friends! It’s been awhile. So much has been going on down here in Texas and now trying to close down this dreadful school year we have had. Anyway, I missed you guys, so I thought I would check in. My SOTD is Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder. We are in the heat of the season right now (reaching in the 90’s), so thought this scent was fitting. Have a great day everyone!

SOTD is Royal Muska by M. Micallef. I’ve been in something of a royal wedding fever these past few days. Today’s perfume choice is entirely unintentional (and seemingly subconscious ????).

Also, I’m purging my perfume wardrobe of bottles that I love but just don’t wear enough (though if I’m honest, I think the SoCal climate might have something to do with it). Anyone interested in any of the following, hit me up at joanna dot coelho at geemayle dot com. I want these lovelies to go to good homes! 🙂

    -L’Artisan Dzing! (100ml bottle, 2/3 full)
-Chanel Cuir de Russie EDT (30ml decant, about 1/3 full)
-Bvlgari Black (75 ml bottle, about 1/2 full)

Will include a few samples, too!

    Good morning NST,
I’m not on theme yet for the week as I received Ciel d’opale yesterday (thanks to whoever suggested here to check out Facebook Fragrance friends to find scents for sale!) and I just had to wear it today. I love this scent, and so did an overenthusiastic boxer at the dog park this morning who kept launching itself at me to try to lick my face.
Why did Roxy the boxer like it? Perhaps because it smells so friendly.

I finally got my decant of JM’s Jasmine Sambac and Marigold. I was SO excited to try it, and . . . it’s okay. The jasmine is a bit bubble-gummy on me, which is an issue I often have with white florals. Now that I think about it, I often have a blah response to the scents I’m most excited about, and an enthusiastic response to things I never thought I’d like. Maybe I need to let fate pick my perfumes . . .

I think that’s just a case of the anticipation being greater than the reward. Plus there’s always something else calling our names. I never get bubble gum from jasmine, thank goodness. I hate bubble gum in every way possible.

Wearing Hermes Citron Noir again. I can’t stop wearing it but i swore i will not buy anymore FB this year (must resist…)

I’m also wearing Pacific Rock Moss on another hand. This one is so weak and devolves into a extreme close up skin scent quickly (reminds me of a number of House of Matriarch fragrances). I almost forgot i sprayed it here. And its not exactly a memorable scent (same goes for the overall house imo)

I’m wearing Gallivant London, but sadly it’s not doing much for me. I don’t think the Gallivant line is for me after all, though I was so interested in them. I still need to wear Tel Aviv one more time before I write off the first four of their releases as not for me. I think my problem is that they use some strong synthetics that are grating on me.

That line didn’t work for me either. I don’t recall being bothered by the synthetics as much as finding them kind of thin and falling a bit flat, and also a bit generic.

Yes, a bit flat and generic is a good way to describe them. I think Istanbul bothered me the most with synthetic notes. Plus they all remind me of things I’ve smelled before but not as good. I’m glad to have been able to try them though.

Winter has arrived here with a vengeance! Yesterday was wet and windy, and last night we were kept awake for a while by the wind whistling around the windows. Today has started clear, which is much more pleasant for the walk to work. I’m thinking Chambre Noir, which is one of my winter favourites.

Thank you all for your kind comments about my health scare. A couple of you asked about symptoms, there’s not a lot to tell. I got an awful pain in my chest out of the blue, I felt a little breathless for a few minutes, and I knew there was something wrong. Having experienced SCAD doesn’t make me an expert, but my one piece of advice is not to ignore something that it seems might be heart-related, even if you have none of the risk factors.

SOTD was Rahele. It’s not a place but it is supposed to be about travel.

Nice. I was hoping that Mohur was a place but it is a type of coin. My dad was an avid coin collector but I have not come across a mohur.

Well, maybe a coin collection could be considered a type of place? ????

    Gorgeous teapot!

    SOTD = L’AP Seville a l’aube

Orange, lavender, incense. No hanky panky was involved in the inspiration for wearing this perfume.

I am taking the day off tomorrow to indulge in the arts – the High Line and Whitney Museum. I’m pretty sure I’ll be within spitting distance of Kilian and Parfums de Marly so I may add a little bit of sniffing.
