Monday scent of the day 3/19

Posted by Robin on 19 March 2018 247 Comments

Another Monday, plus Chocolate Caramel Day. The swapmeet is going strong, and will be open until a week from tomorrow — you still have plenty of time if you want to join in. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu to match Pantone Little Boy Blue.

Reminder: on 3/23, to celebrate the equinox, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's colors from the Spring 2018 report for New York.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Cold cold cold here today, so I’m warming myself with SL Arabie.

Ha! I had the same idea about Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu.

But today I am wearing SL Fleurs d’Oranger, a rather loose interpretation of Cherry Tomato.
No cherry or tomato in it, but I think the color is fitting, and so is its decription: “Demanding attention, this courageous, never to be ignored, shade is viscerally alive.”

Cold, damp day here in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean .
Wearing Chanel Cuir de Ruisse EDT to match PANTONE 14-4202
Harbor Mist. I see this scent as a cold, slightly bleak scent, with a slight undercurrent of warmth – jus like the colour.

I awoke to see 3 silly puppy bellies and 1 paws wiggling as my greyhounds all dreamed, seemingly in unison. Not a bad way to begin a Monday.

So cute! I woke up in the middle of the night with a furry hat. Puppy sleeping above my head on the pillow, rolled onto her back demanding a belly rub. I love it.

I don’t quite get the assortment of seemingly random colors chosen this year by the Pantone Color Institute. Don’t they usually choose just one or two at most? You chose the prettiest one in the group for today, Robin, and your perfume choice is perfect, even if au The Bleu was a complete fail on me.

We went from 70 on Saturday to a snowstorm yesterday evening, so I chose AA Erdenstern today. It is mostly opoponax and tobacco on me, and is very warm and soft. Those notes align well with the color Emperador on this year’s Pantone list, so I’ll happily pretend that I planned today’s SOTD based on that 😉

I think that chartreuse on the bottom is rather vile. I don’t have anything on yet and will have to ponder the scent/color match-ups. But I thought I’d offer up this link to a fashion blog entry–I read this blog regularly as it’s quite fun–it’s about the spring fashion colors, which they call “Crayola” colors–and some of the above ones, especially cherry tomato, are definitely here. https://tomandlorenzo.com/2018/03/translating-trends-spring-2018-whole-crayola-box-colors/

I do think I see a lot of that green called Arcadia in the spring fashions, a rather bright minty green with blue undertones. I’m trying to envisage a perfume with that color as its feeling. Hmmm. I’m sure to come up with something!

    Guerlain’s BdR to match Arcadia

Had a busy busy weekend, as we celebrated Nowruz and I hosted some guests. I made an appetizer, 3 dishes, a cheese course and dessert. Finished off the mint tea, which was much needed. Exhausted today…

SotD is Tam Dao. Edt on the left and edp on the right. I wore them separately over the weekend and today I will decide which version goes on the buy list. The edp seemed to have more sillage and lasting power, I think it will be the winner.

SotD Diptyque Fleur de Peau. It may be a good match for Almond Mauve – “With its gentle petal like touch, delicate and ephemeral Almost Mauve adds a sense of nostalgia to the spring 2018 palette”

According to fragrantica, notes include aldehydes, pink pepper, ambrette, rose, iris, ambergris and musk. I seem to be able to detect every single one of them, though the aldehydes and pink pepper are predominent on me. It is like a lighter, more contemporary Chanel No 5 that is more sophisticated than No 5 l’eau, and also reminds me of PdE Le Cri. I like this very much 🙂

Oh, I think that captures L’Eau en Blanc quite well. It’s also the color I visualize with Narciso edp (white cube,) and happens to work for my SOTD, MMM Lipstick On.

(I would make slight tweaks for each though: a touch more purple for L’EeB, a hint more grey for Narciso, and slightly more pink for Lipstick On.)

I am wearing Hoodie Melange (can’t remember who here came up with that though!) after a productive Sunday of sampling, decanting for swaps, and also digging into more goodies from splitmeet. The strongest seems to be leftovers of Fruitchouli Flash which I am enjoying as much now as I did last night. I didn’t think ahead about this week’s theme so I’m likely going to piggyback on some other ideas I see already popping up from all of you. That Pantone blue is awfully pretty; are those dyed shamrocks in the middle photo?

Yes, hydrangeas. Evidently the color of the petals is influenced by the acidity/alkalinity of the soil (or so a landscape architect told me.)

The color palette does seem a bit chaotic, or maybe it’s just me. Arcadia is a green that I wore a lot in the 80s.
We have had several beautiful cool early spring days and I’m wearing Arpege, can’t think of a color match for it but it’s beautiful 🙂

you smell wonderful! I like the color palette, but I am sort of chaotic 😉

maybe Arpege could match up to Meadlowlark. The bight yellow sort of matches the golden figures on of the mother & daughter, and the sparkly-ness of the aldehydes, and the meadowlark is a song bird, and Arpege is a musical reference.

Oh I’m very curious about this one, as I love the smell of hinoki wood. Can you tell me how authentic it is? Pretty one-note, I’m guessing…also, I’ve heard some things about poor lasting power. Would you agree?

CdG Monocle Hinoki: The notes are listed as cypress, turpentine, camphor, cedar, thyme, pine, Georgian wood, frankincense, moss and vetiver. I sprayed two tiny sprays this morning (as I get called down for wearing perfume all the time) and I can still smell it after five hours.

I love that shade of blue as well. I painted an apartment I lived in that color and it became known as the “Periwinkle Palace.”

(It couldn’t have been further from a palace – it was a studio. It was also visible from the street despite being a few floors up. After moving, I used to drive by occasionally and was always happy to see its new resident(s) kept the paint color 🙂 )

Can’t work without a contract. I’m not sure if they know that or not, but my pay (and many other details) are in the contract, which is between myself and my agency. I get paid out of the pay package, which is a result of the agency’s contract with the hospital. It’s very complex and convoluted. So no, I’m not working for free. ????

I’m on vacation this week and am commando so far today, but I wanted to share a scent experience from last evening. There’s a lemon tree and a grapefruit tree in the yard next door, and one of them is in bloom. At first I thought I was smelling jasmine, but as time went on I noticed a kind of orange-blossom-y note. It was lovely! I think it must be the lemon tree.

YAY SheriG that’s exactly what started me down the rabbit hole! Sitting under anAcacia Tree in full bloom (called a Huachuca tree in Arizona) and walking past the bitter orange trees outside my window while on Vacation!!!!! When the breezes hit it was wafting everywhere and I like you thought it was jasmine, even the flowers are similar. It was just perfect tree sillage 😉 as they warmed all day in the sun. I would stand there in the evening breezes just breathing it all in. . I am building a greenhouse here now in the DC area and THAT will be my first tree!
Yay Twins! Enjoy it for me!

Ahhh, lucky you! You must make friends with the neighbors so that you can eat some of the fruits.

Incidentally, I was just remembering yesterday that my aunt used to send oranges from her trees (in CA) at christmastime, and was wondering why she stopped. Someone also used to send gargantuan lemons but I don’t recall who – it may have been my sister, when she lived in AZ. They were so sweet that they were best eaten peeled – similar to the flavor of a meyer lemon except that they were bigger than grapefruits.

The one time I smelled grapefruit blossoms, I thought that they were definitely BWFs with a sizable hit of indoles. Almost narcotic in their intensity. It’s been too long since I have smelled lemon blossoms, so I can’t mentally compare the two. If there is a botanical garden with a conservatory or greenhouse near you, that might be a good opportunity to go sniffing.

Well, I live in CA, so I’m surrounded by citrus trees! They are mostly orange, lemon, pomelo, or clementine trees, but I think if I hunt around for a while, I’ll find a couple grapefruit trees. I’ll probably see a grapefruit tree in the wild before I get to the botanical garden!

Wearing vintage Dioressence this morning. After I get out of the shower, I think I might wear Chamade or Deneuve. I ordered the gift of Prime an hour ago because I wanted to use the gift card balance that I had. I checked out and everything was hunky dory until I tried to apply it to my account. Amazon won’t let me apply it to my account. They are telling me that I am already a Prime member and they could give me a gift card. I get that today is the last day I have Prime but I want the gift of Prime applied to my account now. I probably will have to wait until tomorrow to apply the Prime and I’m not exactly happy with Amazon.

I was eyeing a bottle of Dioressence last night. Do you know how vintage compares to the new. I’m sure vintage is way better. Frustrating with the Amazon Prime. I had a free trial thinking some orders would be shipped overnight, but was charged shipping on one (which Amazon waived when I called). I guess not everything ships overnight? Good luck with your Prime!

I haven’t tried the new Dioressence but it is similar to the vintage Miss Dior. That over ripe almost rotting fruit, restrained skank but both are still chypres. Thanks about Amazon Prime but I think that I might retry tomorrow and if I get problems, I will be sure to call them and state how unhappy I have been lately with them.

Free shipping is only on Prime items, or from marketplace sellers who offer free shipping. Overnight shipping is only free with Prime Free One-Day items. Regular Prime shipping is 2-day, and only on items marked Prime.

2-day shipping generally excludes weekends, and generally only applies if you order by a certain time of day. They have gotten better with the 2-day shipping now that they use local gig-economy type delivery drivers, though.

Not that I, uh, shop on amazon much…

A bunch of perfume sites ran articles back in November stating Dusita was going to release travel atomizers, but when I contacted the company, they said they weren’t going to do them anymore. Fingers crossed they change their minds, I would buy a couple!

Since I was making a decant for Regina last week, I knew I had to wear it soon. Notes of mint, rose, cucumber, violet leaves, chamomile, and beeswax.

I didn’t manage to post in the lazy weekend poll because all my attention went to the swap meet and to weekend activities, but on St. Patty’s day I wore Green, Green, Green, and Green from my new bottle. I love having a bottle of it!

Testing Commodity Nectar today. Not sure if I like it. I was going for lemony-citrusy and it doesn’t quite fit what I was going for. On the blotter it was fabulous, all lemons and oranges. On my skin though, it went straight to linden and honeysuckle. It’s nice, just not what I was looking for.

Anyone know of a bright citrus that’s not a cologne? I’m looking for something with some staying power.

AG Eau du Sud? I get grapefruit pith from it, but there’s lots of lime, too. It wears very well on me for a citrus.

Atelier Colognes makes dozens of citruses but they all end up smothering me in spices, which is not what I’m into. Nor do I like a chypre-leaning citrus.

I’ve been trying to find something that smells like Love’s Fresh Lemon for ages, to no avail. I wonder if we’re hunting down similar paths?

In the category of Why Must I Fall For The Expensive Ones: Xerjoff 1861 Renaissance. Sweet juicy orange; the best citrus opening ever. Probably not quite the Love’s Lemon that kpaint is after. Others say it goes to spices including fennel so it may not be what you want either, but it does last decent for me which is something. The citrus opening is fleeting but incredible.

Oh! A post below jogged my memory – VCA California Reverie. It smells like orange groves to my nose. Not great projection or longevity (though not as bad as most citruses), but I get lots of citrus – soft and airy rather than zesty. It’s often referred to as a jasmine perfume, but I’ve tried and tried to pick out jasmine and cannot find it.

Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom is another one. It’s a bit too sharp and green for my own citrus fantasies, but again, I am comparing to childhood memories of Love’s.

        A few more:

Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte smells like fresh lemons to me. It is sheer and transparent, a bit like sniffing a bowl of lemons. I also get a puff of white powder, but that’s more visual than olfactory. Projection and longevity are poor – I really have to drench myself in it – but it is charming. (And quite far removed from its pillar, Cristalle.)

Tocca Bianca – lots of lemons mixed with white sugar = lemonade. Admittedly, I haven’t worn this in a long while so my perceptions might be different nowadays.

Fresh Sugar Lemon – similar to the Tocca, but with brown sugar and a very prominent green note. I think I’ve only smelled a lotion version, though.

Acqua di Parma Arancia di Capri – smelled to me like San Pellegrino Aranciata soda (minus the bubbles) with a slug of Campari. So a little bit on the bitter/grapefruit citrus spectrum.

Sorry to be so random and disjointed, but other citruses I’ve tried keep popping into my head 😉

Guerlain Baiser de Russie today from the wonderful hajusuuri. It smelled great at first but had disappeared from my skin by the end of the first hour 🙁 maybe I’ll have to apply with a heavier hand next time.

Good morning everyone! I’m in Eric Buterbaugh Velvet Lavender, from a Scentbird order. It most closely resembles Almost Mauve, rather than Pink Lavender, as it’s a very soft little thing that hangs close to the skin. I suspect I’m anosmic to something here, as it’s very lavender/vanillic on me. No clary sage or musk to my nose.
If you’re looking for a fragrance to help you reset, or just nice for the office, this is one to try.
I hope everyone is having a great Monday. 🙂

I’m not matching up with any of the colors, but I’m very happy with the new, DIY Kulfi perfume I’m wearing today. I had a lovely, relaxing Sunday, and spent some of the time riffling through my box of essential oils, and putting together this combo: cardamom, saffron, sandalwood, vanilla, and coconut. I smell delicious.

Sounds super. We have been mixing spices to make syrups for soda water and the standouts have been orange, lemon, cardamon and tumeric with a bit of palm sugar. The cardamon and tumeric are great together.

Kanuka, I bet that cardamom and turmeric combo makes a soda with a gorgeous color. I’ve been making a lot of soup lately using freshly grated turmeric, and the resulting broth is lovely.

The spices don’t really dissolve but settle in the bottom of the glasss…but it tastes good. It’s a bit of an interactive drink as the lemon zest floats around . We have also tested lemon, lavender and mint (just from the garden) and that was also good.

Hmm. I have 2 bottles of VCA Extraordinaires (a couple of years old, one stored in box, the other not, neither purchased new) and haven’t had any of the issues you’ve mentioned. Neither is OV, though.

I’ve also had multiple VCA E decants over the years without any problems. Where did you get yours? Maybe the bottles had been stored improperly and were about to turn – or the sample vials weren’t clean or something? Or they sat in hot conditions in transit and boiled? It’s odd that they all turned quickly.

I bought a VCA Extraordinaire sample set off eBay about a year ago and they’ve lasted just fine. The OV is much darker than the others though.

Also, if anyone is sitting on any Muguet Blanc they don’t want, hit me up! I’d love to swap for it.

Autumn is here. We’re still getting lovely days, but there is a nip in the morning air. I’m wearing a dress with an appropriate autumn leaf pattern in brown and orange tones. The fabric reminds me a 1960s dinner plate design (which is a good thing in my opinion). I’ll be wearing an orange perfume with Alien Eau Luminescente, which has mandarin notes.

    SotM = Ostara

I have fresh daffodils in a vase on my desk for comparison, and Ostara does smell of daffodils. And tenderly green and waxy and damp earthy with a bit of amber to say winter is not through with us yet.

Began the day in Lipstick On (Almost Mauve.) Only a few drops left in my sample, but more is on the way – YAY swapmeet! (and thanks, kelly!) I tested it against Huitieme Poudre de Riz and Love, Chloe. It’s actually pretty close to Poudre de Riz, but pinker and more powdery. Love, Chloe smelled drier and more bitter and irisy, plus it’s got that touch of suede/leather where Lipstick On is more… lipsticky.

Am now testing a bit of Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina, which just arrived in the mail thanks to a generous NSTer. Delightful, and could not be springier. It’s Little Boy Blue tempered with more white.

Did not know we were doing a color project this week – they are always amongst my favorites. My brain doesn’t match perfumes to novels or movie characters or other such esoterica, but I do tend to get color associations.

    Hi NST people!

I am distracted with many things at the moment, so not spending much time here.

SOTD has been Amouage “Sunshine Man” to match the Pantone ‘Meadowlark’ colour. Now in the late evening I have sprayed a few drops – no more – of Parfumerie Générale “Bouquet Massaï”, so naturally TOMK is miming a theatrical death by gas poisoning across the room from me as I type. It’s really not that bad! Not really ‘my thing’ but a lively enough floral worth some attention.

Work has just today started on remodelling our Málaga apartment, which will take until June and wipe out our savings. It better be worth it! Meanwhile, I have decided to finish up in Düsseldorf at the end of the month. The programme will go on to a phase 2 but I shall not. I’m going to take a fortnight off – maybe more if no new opportunity comes up for a while. :^)
