The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 13 March 2018 14 Comments

From Ex Libris, the Heathcliff candle: "Immerse yourself in the tragic romance of Catherine and Heathcliff. Inspired by Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, this premium candle is the perfect gift for any literary enthusiast. A dark, complex, exotic, and intriguing fragrance, not unlike Heathcliff himself; a blend of amber, musk, and black tea that captivates the senses." 90 hour burn time, $24.

Sorry but amber, musk and black tea won’t smell ANYTHING LIKE THE MOORS

Yet another “literary” scent from someone who obviously doesn’t read literature.
Ahh, the smell of a sadist vengeful brute!
What about the steaming applesauce he threw in someone’s (Nelly’s?) face, or the pile of savage dogs he kept in his house?
Or maybe they are trying to call to mind the wimpy Olivier “all brilliantine” version of Heathcliff from the old movie

And Regina is right. Heathcliff hardly was the cup of lovely tea type.

Yes! Believe me, I love a dark, brooding hero as much as the next woman (Mr Rochester is my man) but I’ve always thought that anyone who sees Heathcliff in any sort of a romantic light must either never have actually read the book, or have a serious masochistic bent. The man is a monster, a truly horrible human being! Definitely don’t understand the allure.

Hysterical. I love Kate Bush and that some immediately popped into my head. Followed by Running Up That Hill.

I think the notes for this candle sound really good, and it’s nice to see an affordable candle line. They do have a Wuthering Heights candle with listed notes of Yorkshire Moors and English Ivy and a candle based on The Shire, among others. However, I’m disappointed to see a Mr. Grey candle. Hardly a literary great worthy of a candle. Notes of fresh linen and seduction – so cheesy!

This is only tangentially related to the subject, but I HATED HATED HATED HATED Wuthering Heights! Attempting to read that book in high school for a class assignment was almost as unpleasant as getting food poisoning.

Ok, so I went to their website because I like the idea of literary-themed candles, but yeah, some of them seem to just really miss the mark. Also, did anyone else notice that the “Gatsby” candle is spelled “Gadsby”? Is there some meaning to this I’m just not understanding? Or was this really just a terrible oversight, or did the creator(s) really think this was his name? For some reason this really stumped me.

Ha, the description actually calls him Jay Gadsby. Excellent.
