Monday scent of the day 2/5

Posted by Robin on 5 February 2018 293 Comments

Happy World Nutella Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Guerlain Jicky Eau de Toilette.

Reminder: 2/9 will be Broadened Horizons Friday...wear a fragrance you initially thought was too [insert adjective] for you to wear. Suggested by Geordie.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Well it is Monday and I am not thrilled so I grabbed a common one for me- Bucoliques de Provence, artisan. I don’t think there is a perfume that would get me to be thrilled about Mondays.

I’m wearing Jean-Michel Duriez Mes fleurs de roses. Pink and white roses with a hint of blackcurrent and blood oranges.

        Thanks!

“Mes fleurs de roses” come in as an armful of imaginary pink and white flowers. I have tinted a damascena rose essence with a bed of peonies, blood oranges, blackcurrant buds, ambrette seeds. The humus of this extraordinary garden is made of a touch of patchouli and saffron, just to remind that these flowers come from Mother’s earth.

Needing some spring uplift, I am in Bvlgari Au de Bleu from the freebiemeet (thanks a lot Downtown Scott!). I am enjoying it greatly on this cold day. Struggling to keep myself awake and drinking Bear’s triple strength coffee.

    Have a happy Monday NST!

Nutella Day! Taz is home from school today due to yesterday’s ice, so at some point we will have to honor the “Inclement Weather No-School LOTR Movie Marathon” family tradition. (Though I’d let him pick The Hobbit series instead, if he wants.) Lunch is going to have to be Nutella Waffles with bacon and fruit.

Dolce Vita parfum today, rich dried-fruit spicy wood. Yum. It’s Feminite du Bois with fewer shadows.

I’m still in search of a Dolce Vita sample. Interesting to see you compare it to FdB, which was a cumin bomb on me. Is Dolce Vita cuminy at all?

      • mals86 says:
        5 February 2018 at 12:34 pm

Not cuminy at all. But I think it’s more fruity than FdB, considerably so.
I only have about 2 ml left in my mini — it’s good stuff, but I can only wear it when it’s really cold because it’s like woody fruitcake.

‘Woody fruitcake’ is oddly appealing to me today! This one has been on my test list forever, but because it’s d/c, it’s hard to sample. Might have to do a lower-risk blind buy one of those minis I see occasionally on eBay. (Oh, just saw that kpaint made the same comment below!)

Same. I tested Shalimar on a paper strip at Ulta not too long ago and I don’t know if this is people’s usual experience with it, but it was *very* animalic. Like, full barnyard. It almost made me laugh out loud.

Not sure what the new formulation is like these days, but I agree with Lovestosmellgood about the vanilla and smoke, and I find a delicate hum of iris and cinnamon underfoot, too.

Pro tip: the spray head on Homme is hyper-responsive, so avoid having your trigger finger on the sprayer while checking the orientation of the nozzle. Yes, I sprayed myself in the face – the good news is that it doesn’t seem to melt mascara. Yeesh.

Late to the party, trying out a sample of Mendittora Rituale. I should note that in general, I’m not a ‘rose’ person, since the note quite often goes sour on me. I wanted to sample this mostly because of the buzz about this one from several of the Fragrantica editors after the 2017 Esxence event. In addition to rose, this one has raspberry and black currant, two other notes that usually don’t work for me. I have to say that this one defies my expectations. It’s a really different take on rose; it’s a jammy rose with prominent honey and narcissus, with a touch of animalic castoreum and a vague resinous facet. I think it’s probably best for cooler weather; it could be a bit much in the heat.

I have to say that it’s quite lovely. I’ll probably test a few more times, but might consider hosting a split of this….

SOTD Core Trudon Olim. Warming but feather-light for this sunny, cold day.
Judging from the levels left in the coffret atomizers, Bruma and Revolution are tied for most sprayed, followed by Olim. Though this one is heftier and lasts longer so I don’t spray as much. I originally fell for Mortel (incense) but haven’t worn it much yet.

I would like to have a re-smell of Iris Nazarena. I got a large split when it first came out, unsniffed, then swapped it away. That was relatively early on in my perfume exploration and it was way too incensey for my newbie nose. I’d like to have another go at it now. Plus, that bottle is just to die for.

I can see Iris Nazarena not being easy for a beginner nose. Fingers crossed you’ll get to try it again. Maybe even someone will host a split at NST during splitmeet soon.

No Nutella for me this morning, but I did have it in a really scrumptious souffle a friend made night before last.

No scent yet, either. Going to work out first. I figure if I type that here, I gotta go do it.

You smell fabulous in vintage Jicky! I didn’t watch the Super bowl last night and played Age of Empires instead along with polishing my nails. Spending the morning in Lyric and will either stay in Lyric or change over into Memoir.

I wasn’t playing the new version but the old one. If I could get Quake 2 to work on my computer, I would be happy. I’ve been wanting the old games that I played in high school in the later 90’s.

Smelling soft and cozy in Lovely Sheer. I forget how much I love this one!

Smelly oops-a-daisy: So anyhoo, sometimes in a fit of boredom, I’ll hop on eBay and make ridiculous low bids on perfumes I want. 99.9% of the time, I get outbid and life moves along. (I might get 2-3 fragrances a year this way.) Last week I inadventently won 4 new ‘fumes…..HA HA HA HA HA I hope they arrive on different days, so the hubs doesn’t take notice! 🙂

Somehow I think all the perfume people on eBay must have been asleep this weekend… I was the only bidder on a vintage 4-pack of Arpege, Scandal, My Sin, and Rumeur extraits. I almost wept when I saw that I had gotten it for the minimum price.

There is only one that I am suspect of: A bottle of Allure Edt for $31?? It’s the only one that I hope and pray is authentic. Paypal and Ebay are good about refunds though, so only aggravation if it’s not legit!

My other 3 are Versace Crystal Noir, J. Lo Live, and Narciso R. Fleur Musc….I’m excited! 🙂

Argh monday….but it is very busy at work, so time flies!

I am wearing Bois d’Iris, by The Different Company.

The media in Netherlands is paying more and more attention to Super bowl each year….crazy, I hardly know the rules of the game haha.

I think the outfits look kinda funny, but I also think it is quite dangerous. No one should get hit that hard, that often. Its like boxing or MMA…please be careful, you only have one head/brain!
(Btw, this does not stop me from watching the sports mentioned above, but I do feel ambiguous towards it)

Since the USA is out of the world cup, I am thinking I will cheer for holland this year. I saw a semi professional game in Breda over the summer and had such a blast, it was my first experience.
So now, do I just buy something orange to wear for this summer?

The Super Bowl is pretty much a national holiday here. I don’t celebrate and don’t know the rules, mostly because I have no interest in the game. My first job ever was on a neurology unit and it wasn’t uncommon to see young men admitted for football related concussions and even those with personality changes from repeated brain injuries.

My first job after library school was doing research for the Canadian Library of Family Medicine (which I don’t think even exists anymore). A group of doctors wanted me to research the literature in order to assure their local school board that football is a safe sport for high school students. Unfortunately, the research showed exactly the opposite. They were not pleased.

Wow! What did the school board do then? Here in America Football is like religion and even with evidence that boys & young men are being damaged by moves in football people still sign up for it!

I can say that they do take concussions very seriously at my high school – there is a cognitive pre-test that all athletes (not just football players) must take before they start practicing so that there is a baseline in case they get a head injury. If a kid is unlucky enough to get a concussion, there is a series of protocols that must be followed (depending on the severity), up to modifications of classroom work. I’ve had 5 students this year who have had concussions. None have been football players – 3 play volleyball and the other 2 play basketball.

          • ScentSpirit says:
            5 February 2018 at 5:18 pm

As I recall there was much arguing back and forth but nothing changed, and I don’t think even the argument transferred to other school board areas. ( I was going to say “bled into other areas”.)This was in Canada, so football doesn’t have quite the same mystique here, but it hasn’t been all that long since hockey players didn’t have to wear helmets. The thing that surprised me when I did the research was the prevalence of something called “numb hands syndrome” in football injuries, since I had never even heard of it in non-professional media.

Oh wow….I wonder what they did with this knowledge….I also like to know what the sports associations are doing with research like that. It should be common knowledge by now right?

Too bad so many sports are all about big big money right now…it will be so hard to fight the powers that be on health issues.
Just like it is with the food industry….

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris EdT

This one and Amande are my favorites from Les Infusions.

Inspired by Undina’s month of iris, I wore Hiris exclusively for four days. I enjoyed the focused attention to one scent and really noticed the honeyed roses hiding behind the iris. Also got a hint of almond (yay, almond!) and had to check the notes. Yep, there’s “almond wood” in there.

And I was reminded that much of my delight in fragrance comes from changing things up, wearing things that contrast and complement one another, the way the food and flavors I choose for a meal and throughout the day change from sweet to salty to savory and so on.

Ah well, Monday again. Let’s make it an extra scented, multi-fragrance day. 🙂

In L’Artisan Patchouli Patch, which I wore because I feared it might be too much patchouli. Perhaps not, as it turns out – it seems to sit sort of middle of the road between “dirty hippie” and “scrubbed clean of anything objectionable.” Not something I’d typically reach for, but I’m not regretting it.

Erm, I’m broadening my horizons by trying out a new (to me) perfume? I’m wearing Stash today! I think it’s the perfume oil. It’s very nice. It started out with a spicy, peppery, woodiness, and in about half an hour, settled down to smell like 5-star hotel soap. I don’t mean that as an insult! I certainly don’t need a FB of this, but I could really use a small amount. eBay seems to have 10-mL rollerballs for $15. I really don’t want a rollerball, so I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I might. This is the second celebuscent I’ve very much liked (after Pharell’s Girl). This is really desnootifying. I need to give more arm time to my sample of Queen!

!!! I would have been happy to send you a good “Stash” of the perfume and the oil – I still can. I just like consolidating my errands

I have seen several posts were people have found amazing deals at TJ Maxx or marshals – I never seem to find anything good at my local stores – but it might be worth a visit

The perfume oil is a moisturizer for hair and skin – just scented oil – not extrait

I bought a boxed gift set of Stash just after xmas at TJ Maxx and it has a 10ml something – I think it’s a spray, not a rollerball. I was planning to offer it up at the next swapmeet here in March (keeping the 30ml bottle that was in the set and the body lotion)…I suppose I could swap earlier if you are interested (are we allowed to do that? Don’t want to violate any rules! :)).

Exciting news: My grandson was born on Friday morning! We don’t know yet whether there are problems other than his deformed foot, but the tests have been done and the results are due on March 16th. However he was 7 pounds 6 ounces and seems to be doing very well. I can confirm that he is a joy to cuddle and our family thinks he is perfect. (Other than his 2 year old big sister- she thinks he is not very interesting other than the fact that the hospital gave him a hat.)

I am wearing Laboratorio Olfativo Alambar to keep warm in my absolutely freezing library.

Wowee, you are bringing in the week in some kinda style with vintage Jicky! I don’t think I’ve ever smelled vintage EDT but I wear the current EDT often. (That said, my 1 ml sample of vintage extrait is the “my precioussss” of my collection.)

I’m trying to summon spring in Burberry Brit Rhythm For Her, one of my favorite cheap thrills.

Today, I interpreted the theme as “scent I appreciate, but don’t reach for enough,” Nu, by YSL is way more aldehydic than my typical scents, but they burn off into a weird dry incense lily. The buds are out and it is starting to smell like spring!

SOTD Chamade edt. This gets better with every wear. My dime store description would be a mix of Chanel No. 5 & No. 19

Robin – I imagine you smell fantastic – looking forward to smelling this soon. By the way, do you have a favorite rose chypre? I read up on your history with Coriandre, and while I know nothing can replace it, I’m wondering if you have a go to rose with patch/spice/chypre that you really enjoy today.

A good friend in Lyon inherited some stock of a perfume store that was damaged in a fire. Included in the goodies he was given (the boxes had smoke damage and could not be sold) were 4 full bottles of Chamade edt and 3 bottles of Diorissimo.

Imagine my horror to discover he was using the Chamade as air freshener and shrugged when I told him I was taking the Chamade and the Dior from him….I kept a bottle of the Chamade and found forever homes for the rest!

I’ve started a month of wearing Blind Buys full bottles which accounts for about 3/4 of my collection. Yesterday my bottle of Boronia Grandiflora arrived. I love the smell of the boronia shrub. It has feathery green leaves ( a bit like manuka or kanuka) and small bell flowers ( like kanuka) that have an intense jammy raspberry scent. It’s almost impossible to grow here but it’s in the Australian part of our botanic gardens. When it flowers you can smell it in the air. The scent captures that true to life element without being overtly fruity. I think that’s really clever because real boronia coukd have that phoney room spray/ candle vibe if you weren’t careful ( the way blackberry can get distorted as if blown through with collagen implants) . Somehow it feels like you approach the fruit scent by pushing through the leaves and stems, the fruit sits behind the greener and woodier elements, the fruit just pokes through. There’s a hint of caramel as it drys down which is the only part of the scent I’m not wild about. It’s not a loud perfume but it is really good. Blind buy rating8/10. I had a total fail on getting to the glasshouse to smell the corpse flower. Honestly, it was like being in one of those nightmares where you have to get to the airport but everything goes against you and the more you try the less progress you make. I feel sick about it as I had gone in every day leading up to the big bloom.

It’s still interesting to see them after peak bloom, although the smell is only really strong the night that they open. So probably only the personnel who can stay after hours get the full effect.

Good morning, NST. We’re back from Whanganui, exhausted but thinking we did my mother-in-law proud for her final farewell. We walked back into utter chaos here: the kittens (all cats tomorrow) had obviously been rarked up by the storm, and had rioted with amazing effect. Every towel in the bathroom was on the floor, a shoe box had been systematically torn into small pieces (that’s Alexander), toys were everywhere, cushions had been towed into the kitchen. And so on. Three rapturous purrs told us they were pleased to see us, and we were certainly pleased to see them.

And then work happened. Yesterday was…torrid. AND — this is bad!— I forgot perfume! No perfume! Did you note that? No perfume! How could I? Just when I needed my safety zone, too! Today is Waitangi Day, our national holiday, so I have a short respite. I’m wearing Baiser Vole Extract, just because I can, and because I don’t, very often. It’s lovely for a day of housework and catching up on chores. And tomorrow is another day— I know, I know, very Scarlet O’Hara, but it’s still true, and it’s not a bad attitude.

    Be well, all.

Thank you. The new job feels huge at the moment, but that’s mostly because I haven’t tied all its bits down into a pattern in my head. And then, of course, there are the people…goodness, but some people think they are entitled to special treatment. I’ll have to stop spending time being astounded by people’s demands and behaviour, or I’ll never get anything done!

When I was in college, I had a beautiful vintage beaver effect coat (actually shearling), but I made the mistake of leaving it out on the bed with my cat unattended. The cat systematically pulled bits of the fur out, leaving white bald spots. 🙁

I’m curious to sniff this new Grandiflora!

Me too! About Boronia, I mean. I think I said here once before that the story goes that sailing ships approaching Australia knew they were coming close to land because the scent of boronia wafted out over the sea long before they saw the shore. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I do know that people who can smell the flowers it say it’s a delicious scent, and quite strong. I’m completely anosmic to the flowers, but I’m hoping to be able to smell the bottled interpretation of boronia, especially after Kanuka’s description.

    SOTD = Mugler Oriental Express

I am participating in Undina’s Iris Month. The fun continues!

I don’t know why I don’t wear it more often (smells great, works for every season, low sillage andnoddice-friendly) – i should leave the bottle out as the packaging is a little OTT.

This is a very well done “iris” (via carrot seeds but not carrotty at all) and vanilla drydown. Sandalwood is listed in the notes but it is well hidden and the basil reads as a light citrus to me.

Several years ago, I split 2 bottles. It is very easy to do since the bottle is refillable and one does not need to worry about product loss (if you have to decant via atomizer) since you can use a pipette to fill up the atomizers. There are newer perfumes in this line that seem to have good reviews (Wonder Bouquet, which I have never smelled) that may be good candidates for the splitmeet. In the U.S., the line is available via the Mugler website and Nordstrom (2 or 3 stores have it and you can irder online too). I am already contemplating 4 splits and won’t be able to add another one. I would be happy to mentor a split host who had never done a split.

Oh, bummer. Wonder Bouquet is one I’d have gone in for (but won’t host myself 😉 ) Which 4 are you contemplating?

I have never noticed iris in Oriental Express. It reads to me as Shalimar-offspring and I haven’t put any more thought into it beyond that. Will have to look for the iris next time.

Hello! Yes, the Whanganui scene has certainly changed. On Saturday we went out for a quiet dinner becdusecwe were both too tired too cook. We sat in the old part of town near the river looking out at the wide streets and pretty buildings, and I couldn’t help but think what a lovely life we will have there. The restaurant filled up with couples roughly in our age group, and the snatches of conversation I heard from surrounding tables sounded so interesting that I wished to be able to join in. I think we will get to know people and will have fun. I had a swift pang of regret that I’m not living that life right now, but it passed. I have other things to do at the moment.

Thanks! Le Cri is very quiet (normally I go for much louder scents) but it quite surprised me on the open (the name is perfect for how it begins with the iris) and it evolved quite beautifully then hung around in the background for a very lovely hour or two. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts if you’re able to get some!

In January I wore 31 different perfumes from samples I’ve collected, but I didn’t keep track of the houses. Certainly a wide range, though, and only a few more than once. I’ve really enjoyed this project, which I began in November, and it’s helped me sort out a lot of tossers.

I’m wearing Feu Secret, my winter selection from Friday that didn’t win out on the random grab. I so enjoy this one. I think I’m going to try and do a whole month of iris rather than just a week. I’ve made a list, as much as I can remember, of iris centric bottles, samples, and decants that I have. So far the list goes up to 31, though I can’t recall if I still have a sample of Dior Homme.

Oh, and I wore Iris Poudre yesterday. I’m trying to plot out and wear my NSFW irises on the weekend.

I am still in finish-off-some-samples mode… so am in Memo’s Irish Leather… I really like this one, but the idea of owning a full bottle just sounds oppressive. Ever had that feeling? Really enjoying a sample but with no real desire to own a full bottle?

I am reading Manhattan Beach and am really enjoying it. Egan’s attention to detail has a cinematic quality… like when you see a period movie and notice the hand-stitching on clothing, and the right amount of refuse and light in the streets… She includes references to soaps and perfumes here and there as well. Most recently a character mentioned wearing Sirocco. I had to look it up.

I have this feeling about almost every leather perfume I try: while I liked dozens, there are probably just 3 or 4 in my FB collection because most of those I try and like feel just too much to have a bottle – I won’t ever wear enough of it to justify the purchase.

Exactly! Even the ones I love I tend to just have decants–like cuir pleine fleur, or minis like Bottega Veneta– and those are hardly leather bombs!

I started the day in 28 La Pausa. It smelled so beautiful, but was 100% gone by the time I got out of my car at work. Wow – that was fleeting. So now I’m wearing Wood Sage and Sea Salt, from the bottle I brought to work in case I needed to re-spritz after lunch.

    Stay safe and fragrant, everyone.

Beautiful and my favorite iris, but it is the most fleeting perfume I have encountered in my whole life. Even if I drench in it, clothes included, by the time I finish spraying it is already gone. So frustrating! 🙁

My recent experience with La Pausa was similar – despite using it “hajusuuri-style” with a lot of sprays. Well, still nice while it lasts.

Nutella Day! I have some, probably more than five years old, that I needed for a recipe and never used again. I should throw it out.
This weekend I did my taxes and once again I am flummoxed by things like carryforwards and capital gains basis. I just cross my fingers and hope that I did everything correctly. Today I caved and bought the 10ml bottle of Slowdive. I had used up all my sample and I hardly ever finish them so I took it as a sign I needed a bottle. Heeding Robin’s tale of acquisition to the point of liters, I talked myself out of the 50ml size.
Not doing iris month, (but wondering what the NSFW irises are) I’m wearing D600 just because. Now to go outside and do battle with the dandelions, whose flowers are larger than I have seen in years. I wonder why.

My NSFW irises are those that are loud or bold. I also have a perfume sensitive office mate that I have to consider. I know at this point that she has an aversion to peppery perfumes or strong florals, especially lily. Or anything resembling a cigar (read: tobacco notes).

So back to irises… some that I think won’t go over well at my work other than Iris Poudre are PG Cuir d’Iris, Ferre (quite similar to IP), an aged decant of Infusion d’Iris that is very strong, possibly Hiris, and probably a couple others that I can’t think of right now. I’ll have to consult my list when I get home.

Hiris?! Wow… You should have very scent-amplifying skin: as much as I like Hiris, on me it’s almost a whisper.

Another sample shopper here. My sis gave me an almost-finished sample of Lampblack so I used that up. Not what I expected. I got a lot of citrus. Smokier now. Very, very nice.

          It’s worth sampling, imho.

I’ve never gotten aboard the Nutella bandwagon. Somehow its taste just seems too indefinite to me, as if it can’t make up its mind what it ought to taste like. Today I’m wearing Keiko Mecheri Datura Blanche because I just found it the other day in my office, after years of searching for it at home. There it appeared in my desk drawer while I was searching for something else, a thumbtack, I believe. (The Lord works in mysterious ways.) I love this a lot! In fact I do like other datura scents too, although I’m aware that many do not share my love. We continue to have blah gray medium cool weather here. It’s not like the usual Texas with sunshine, blue sky, and flowers (our also-rare deep freeze killed off many of even the more hardy flowers). Oh well at least we’re not facing a major winter storm like the Northeast is supposed to get. Good luck, all in its path!

I never got into Nutella either, for the same reason you mention. It’s nice to know that I am not the only person.

Took a trip to Lucky Scent on this hot El Lay day with a visiting friend and ended up wearing some Black Afghano by Nasomatto out the door. Working in concert with the hazy-smogged-bleh air to put up a shield. Might be a bit too sweet, but it’s a funky Monday nevertheless.

Late check in today. I’m in a cloud of Barbara Bui from the freebiemeet, along with a little Theorema, from an eBay auction. Mine was the only bid, $35 for a partial bottle. There may have been some evaporation, as the sprayer shows signed of being jimmied. Smells good, though. I’ve marked the level on the bottle; I really don’t wanna have to decant it. ????

Back home from a dentist appointment. Not fun. I will have a few more down the road. Boo!! I didn’t want anything too intrusive so I used my Iris rollerball from Royal Apothic. It’s a little dry and slightly green. Not as vegetal as Iris Silver Mist but is a nice soothing scent. Perfect for right now.

At least to offset the dentist appointment, my goodies from Beautylish just arrived. That is some great customer service; everything was nicely wrapped. I will try out the moisturizer tonight before bed and the primer(s) and makeup brushes tomorrow.

Sorry about the dentist. It’s funny how dental work seems to go in strings like that. It’s either no big deal or a bunch of work….

Exactly. I think it will be a few high ticket things coming my way. Thankfully I have pretty good coverage at work, according to the receptionist today so that will help with the costs.

Today’s SOTD was Shiseido Message From Orchids from a decant. I’m really curious to try to track down some other limited edition and Japan-only Shiseido scents. All they seem to want to release in the US is a bunch of Zen-something-or-other frags, most of which (except the original Zen) are or no interest to me.

SOTE is Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple, which I picked up in the Freebiemeet. This really smells sort of Christmassy to me, rather than evoking a temple, but I like it. I may prefer it as a room fragrance rather than a personal scent. It does put me in mind of gingerbread or spiced apple cider or something.
