Thursday scent of the day 1/25

Posted by Robin on 25 January 2018 269 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Opposite Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Imaginary Authors Mosaic, from my Top 10 of Summer 2017.

Reminder: on 1/26, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today’s SOTD for today’s rainy SF weather is Laura Mercier’s Minuit Enchanté, with incense, spice, woods and resins. Wafting powdery comfort today. 🙂

It was nice stuff. (Even for an oriental-avoider like me.) Unfortunately limited edition and very hard to find now.

It was! The dry down is among my top snuggly scents I own (Dior Addict & SL’s Un Bois Vanille). I was fortunate to snag a bottle before it left the Laura Mercier counters. If it were available, I would have purchased the tester bottle.

I tried shamelessly begging and groveling but the SA refused to take pity on me!

SOTD is my newest ‘top 10 of winter’ fragrance, Guerlain’s Baiser de Russie (aka Les Voyages Moscow). Frankly, this likely will be a top 10 for me in spring and fall as well!

I just noticed a fuller list of notes on Mimifroufrou.com that I haven’t seen anywhere else: “Top notes of bergamot, plum, pine needle, lemon, and absinthe seguing into a heart of cranberry and jasmine petals. The base features caramel, sandalwood, tonka bean, white musks and vanilla.”

SOTD Amouage Bracken Woman, from a sample vial. It’s weird and lovely- lots of herbal notes, sharp and green at the beginning mellowing out with lily becoming prominent after about an hour or so. I like it!

SOTD Oriza L Legrand Jardins d’Armide. Rose/violet/iris rice powder. Kind of retro and romantic. Feeling purdry today ????
Also have a spritz of MCG Burlesque on the back of my hand for comparison. The Oriza is more rose/violet heavy, a littles sweeter, and slightly less powdery. I really like both.

Sure – a very kind NSTer who already had a supply of her own spotted one of the cube-style tester bottles on ebay and pointed me at it. I took a few days to make up my mind because it was a lot (of dollars, and a fair amount of extrait), but in the end I decided that, per ml, it was a very fair price, and I love VdN enough that I’d likely wear it to the dregs of the bottle. No regrets!

Wearing Narcisco Rodriguez For Her (black bottle, which is the edt, I think?), one of my few cold weather ONLY scents. In the winter I find this quite sexy, but in warm weather it smells insipid bordering on unpleasant to me. Gotta wear it while I can . . .

My husband and I are hooked on the Netflix show Dark if anyone needs something to watch. I recommend skipping the dubbing (it’s in German) and just turning on the subtitles (assuming you don’t speak German). Happy Thursday!

Haven’t been yet but I had a cup of their Hindu Holiday tea at a nearby restaurant and asked what brand it was. I’ll have to make a trip to the shop soon. Website is pretty.

New-ish Chant d’Aromes, a lovely and springy aldehydic floral. For some reason the heart has a ten minute phase where it smells like citronella, but after that it’s all smooth Guerlanade. I found a bottle of vintage extrait a few months ago so I got a really inexpensive new bottle to compare. Still haven’t opened the extrait though.

I am actually participating in opposites day by wearing Balle de Match. Not having known it was opposites day, I chose to wear it to get a break from the heavy orientals that I’ve been wearing this week. This is one of my favorite citrus scents. I believe it is still in production, but it’s called L’Eau de Sport. I’ve also just bought my second full bottle of the year – Batucada. One of the 1.7 oz. bottle that L’Artisan is no longer producing. I got it for $30 from eBay.

They don’t smell alike at all. Jub 25 is a woody chypre-oriental in the vein of Rochas Femme but woodier and richer. Beloved is a sweet/herbal abstract floral. Though they don’t smell alike, I’d say it’s kind of Chanel no 5 in the abstract floral kind of way.

Possibly just in genre. Beloved is low in the aldehydes and tamer, less grand maybe. I honestly can’t think of something to which it smells similar right now. I’ve smelled quite a few Amouages and I have to say no 2 have smelled alike to me. I really like Beloved btw. Super pretty and interesting.

BTW, I love it. I great a lovely chamomile note in the opening that really does it for me. It is super pretty and elegant.

I’m in Mahora from a mini I got for a song on ebay. I’ve been curious about this one–a Guerlain with absolutely zero love as far as I can tell. Well, it does not smell like a Guerlain. No Guerlainade so far at least. It is a white flower/tuberose powerhouse… swings tropical. Fragrantica lists almond blossom among the notes. Not sure I am picking up anything particularly almondy. It doesn’t smell niche really. If I had to guess what I’d guess if someone had me sniff this blindfolded, I’d say it was a mainstream designer scent from the late 1980s or early 1990s. A 2000 Guerlain? Nope, would not have thunk it.

Thank you. I will keep that in mind! For now I have a full mini which seems like it will go a long way. Gosh I do love the bottle though! Even my mini is done very well–doesn’t look like a toy but like a real perfume flacon.

Right now the drydown shares a lot with Fracas–at least that is what I am getting this round. I will test it more in the coming weeks. I am so glad you love this one. Such a beautiful bottle, such excellent pedigree, and so much vavavoom!!!!

SOTM is Angel Muse. Have to go pick up my car from the shop yesterday. They had it all day yesterday and only did the diagnostic. Never called to ask if they should actually repair it. Grrr! I got a free loaner last night after pitching a fit. Fortunately, the repair won’t be expensive. I might wait until after my swim to go get it, though.

GAH on the “oh, duh, you actually wanted us to fix it?” thing. Over the past week I have spent close to 15 hours getting various vehicles serviced (husband’s. son’s. daughter’s. MIL’s.) and/or picking people up from the garage.

I mean, it took the Serious Repair Shop in town more than 10 days to repair the 1998 Ranger Taz drives to high school — but the truck is older than he is, and the holdup was getting parts for the thing. One thing good about a small town is usually that people talk, and poor customer service is killer on things like garages.

Hope your car is fixed soon!

SotD is Vetiver blanc, sultan pasha attars. Its a real beauty…everytime I wear it I am kind of awestruck.
Tuberose and vetiver…yesss awesome, but the ambergris is the star addition that makes this scent glow!

During my lunchbreak I tried Etui Noir, from Miller Harris.
    Leather, iris and incense.
    Not bad…not bad at all.

Testing Anima Vinci Wood of Life by Michel Roudnitska. It’s supposed to contain some unusual Brazilian ingredients, piri-piri (the root, not the chili peppers) and palo santo, plus cinnamon and notes that give it a pleasant freshness. I’m not sure how much I like it, but I did feel attracted to put it on again today after wearing it last night.

I ordered the Anima Vinci sample set after reading this review of the launch by the Candy Perfume Boy:

    https://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2017/11/28/perfume-review-anima-vinci/

The shipping cost gave me pause, but I will say it came very carefully packed, and the presentation is lovely.

Wearing 31 Rue Cambon today which is definitely in my top 10 for winter.

Would be interested in hearing other’s thoughts about colleagues you work with in their 20s. I’m struggling daily with a 27 year old who comes in at 10:30ish, takes an hour lunch, is on his phone more than sporadically txting, and leaves around 5pm. Oh, and he’ll disappear at least once a day for a smoke with other colleagues for 15-20 minutes. No one says anything (at least not that I’m aware of) and this just galls me. Does he get his work done? Yes he does, for the most part. Are others just accepting that this is how 20 year olds operate, so get over it? Help me please!

Sounds like he is pushing your buttons, and understandably so! But if he is getting his work done, and isn’t reporting directly to you, I’d tend more toward breathing deeply and letting it go. Easier said than done, I know. Maybe even take some inspiration from him. If you’re toiling away all day, let yourself take a longer lunch. Do some perfume shopping 😉

I supervise student employees at a university as part of my job and I have noticed cell phone use on the job to be a persistent problem among some of them, but overall the 20+ students I work with are a responsible, hardworking bunch.

Sounds to me like this employee isn’t being pressed enough or should be moved to part-time. If he can get his work done in five hours, why pay him for more than that? Hopefully he is hourly and keeping accurate track. A good long term employee would be looking for additional work or responsibilities, not settling for doing the minimum. Sad that someone so young is settling for being in a job that he seems to not find engaging or challenging.

I remember a former coworker at a job I had over a decade ago who was in his early 20’s. He also had the slacker attitude. Management ended up telling him that he had to punch a timeclock, despite the fact that he was salaried. It kept him on schedule.

Sounds like he needs more work to do. Unfortunately my workplace is all about efficiencies (about the last 5 years +). If he knows ‘a better way’ then maybe he needs to be put on special projects.

All the young pups are game for this strategy, but management still comes to us old timers for input on how things REALLY work.

Wishing you best of luck, trust me I’ve been there!

Oh my, this sounds familiar. If this person reported to me, that behavior will not be tolerated. One such person who reports to a peer saunters in 9:30ish – 10ish and SHE LIVES CLOSEST to the office and in fact, walks to the office (hello, NO transportation issues”. She’s constantly on her cell, disappears for chunks of time, takes a long lunch, and then still eats at her desk. And you would not see a sign of her past 5:30. We are in an environment where most people have to reserve their seat and one usually ends up sitting at a different seat everyday (I don’t have to reserve since I’m, ahem, special). Anyway, she saw a headset left by a colleague and she asked if he was going to be in tomorrow. I said I don’t know, to which she said if he comes in, could I let him know that his headset is in a particular spot? I asked if she was going to be in the office tomorrow and she said yes. I told her she should tell him herself. What the???? Seriously?

I’ve been inspired by Robin’s Best Summer Perfumes of 2017 to match my perfume to my fruit bowl….in other words, nectarines. Lots of nectarines. So JM Nectarine Blossom and Honey. I think the perfume is far less delicious than the fruit as the perfume seems quite synthetic, a GM version maybe? Anyway, it’s a good start.

I have been doing WW for about a year and lost like 24 pounds. I’ve kept it off but haven’t been on track like I should since the move and holidays. So I think Whole30 will be helpful in getting back on track! I can do without the grains, legumes/beans, sugar but I have to admit the lack of cheese and alcohol is disturbing! But I am committed and I think it’s going to be great!

SOTD = L’Artisan Hermes LThe Pour Deux et L’Ambre des Merveilles

I made it up, but here’s the thing – Tea for Two and L’Ambre des Merveilles are Top Winter perfumes for me; layered, they’re a potent and superfantastic combination. My recipe is 5 spritzes of T42 topped up with 2 spritzes of L’Ambre.des Merveiles. The Hermes adds a spot of sunshine to the otherwise spicy and somber T42. Try it and letme know what you think!

BTW, I dound my OJ Woman travel spray but it got bumped off the wear list with this layering experiment.

Ha! Maybe, but I think it’s more of a control issue. I have met a lot of nurses like this in the field of nursing and I’ve tried to figure out why these control issues are so prevalent. In my own (unscientific) opinion, it’s probably because they are powerless in their personal lives and need to compensate in their work lives by micromanaging. Such a waste of time and energy.

That is crazy! Reminds me a comment made by a recruiter that candidates were upset that they got rejected too quickly by our career site. Hmmm, well, if there were qualifying questions and your responses indicated you are not qualified, why give you false hope. The career site ended up being tweaked to delay the rejection by several days.

That is too funny. We had a similar problem at my old company. It was widely known that an engineering candidate had to sit for 4 technical interviews and a management/HR interview in one day. If you got escorted out after the first two interviews, you knew you weren’t getting hired and internal people referred to it as being flushed. HR said candidates complained so we had to put them through all five interviews regardless of how obviously unsuited they were, to avoid offending them.

Happy Thursday, dear NSTers! I’m doused in four sprays of the exquisite Trayee. I love this one so much. I’ve got a travel spray from a Take Two split, and I’m very worried about what will happen to me when I reach the bottom of the travel spray. Maybe someone will want to swap some Mohur for Trayee? It’s so spicy and delicious! A quintessentially Indian scent. You know, minus heavy incense and sandalwood.

So, I’m most definitely sick. I stayed in bed for ten hours last night and am still at home (it’s after 10 here). Very fortunately for me, this is not a busy week at work, so I can afford to rest for half a day. This will go much better than the last time I was sick, in Nov/Dec, when the weight of work crushed me into being sick for a whole month.

But the jokes on me, because this is the rare floral that I dig. Not too sweet, gentle ylang ylang and bergamot up top…This will probably be a good one to try again in spring.

I’m in Martin Margiela “Promenade in the Gardens” today – as previously mentioned, it’s been “promoted” to use for my one day a week voluntary stint in local children’s charity shop as I think it’s quite strong, which can come in handy if you’re sorting through a bag of not-so-nice-smelling donations! Otherwise I only have a bottle of Privet Bloom, which I absolutely love, & a few odd samples of bits & pieces. Am definitely planning to add to my collection either when visiting my brother near Tampa & friends north of Houston in March, or in Edinburgh in May when attending the Nils Lofgren concert. I also need to contact the Uncommon Finds chap to see if he’s doing anything around Tampa when I’m there in March given he’s closed his actual shop.

I had tons of cavities as a child so always dread going… as I suppose everyone feels. Going to a new dentist is always slightly daunting as well, since we moved, but I’m happy I’ve found a good one. Oof, is this one of the new 100-mL bottles? The old 50-mL ones come with the screw top on, and are super easy to take off and exchange for the sprayers.

It’s one of the old 50 mls. The round screw top is as you say, easy to take off, but the sprayer is inside the other, taller cap, and it won’t come out. I’m taking the pliers to it tonight.

Prada Infusion d’Amande thanks to Wendysue. Light and really nice. Almond is a new love.

Received a $25 credit toward a future flight from my complaint about being forced to check my bag unnecessarily (which added 25 minutes to my travel time.). Also got a $15 additional credit because apparently the DirecTV wasn’t working well in the flight (which I didn’t even know.) I’ll take it! I’ve decided to go for window seat in my next trip in order to board earlier. Sorry folks…you’ll just have to get up a bit more often.

Began the day with Tonka Imperiale, a winter fave, but which I can only take in small doses. Being a child of the 80s and a go-big-or-go-home perfume kinda gal, it takes something really massive for me to be overwhelmed. But Tonka Imperiale can be too much even for me and is best applied just a little dab at a time.

And fortunately I applied very judiciously, since my Tauerville order arrived today. I’ve got Vanilla Flash under one wrist and Amber Flash on the underside of the other. I ought to have tested separately, as I keep getting whiffs of something intriguing but am not sure which one it is. I think it’s the vanilla, though. Both have aspects of When We Cuddle, which I wore last night and is a winter fave, though it’s a nice bedtime frag any time of year.

Popping in quickly to share that I’m wearing YSL Nu EDP in the silver hockey puck bottle. It’s definitely a winter fave – spicy and balsamic.

In my big, chewy, sticky incense— Terveer Incense, which is so obscure the brand is not even listed on Fragrantica. I think I got it at Barney’s a few years ago. Great winter scent.
