Friday scent of the day 5/12

More from La Société Parisienne de Savons (if you missed it, see yesterday's Le Baume L'Eau de Cologne), and this time, something you can easily buy on my side of the pond: a Violette de Parme bath soap in a pretty, retro-look tin, 250g for $25. A smaller guest soap in a box is $8, a 10g box of dusting powder is $26, and there are also bath salts and liquid soap available. All at Hampton Court.

A spot for the Essenze by Ermenegildo Zegna collection. (There are more than 5 now; the latest to join the series were Bourbon Vanilla, Indian Spice and Persian Saffron.)

Bland and samey fragrance launches

“Aramis was a pioneer in men’s fragrance and is a scent that is distinctive and recognisable and one which can transcend trend and fads,” says Estée Lauder’s Trudi Loren, Senior Vice President, Corporate Fragrance Development, proudly. Which is something that certainly can’t be said of the majority of today’s bland and samey fragrance launches – few of which will be around in 2024, let alone 2064.

— Lee Kynaston pays tribute to Aramis, on the market since 1964. Read more at Aramis: the smell that just won't go away at The Telegraph.

And the raw materials Caroline used are irrelevant. The scent is the scent. If you need to know what’s in it, “You” is probably not for you.1

That’s Chandler Burr, who is familiar to perfumistas as the author of Emperor of Scent and The Perfect Scent, as the New York Times’ perfume critic from 2006 through 2010, and as a “curator of olfactory art”. The “Caroline” is perfumer Caroline Sabas. The “You” is You or Someone Like You, Burr’s new fragrance under the auspices of French niche line Etat Libre d’Orange, and named for Burr’s first novel. Unbeknownst to Burr, Etat Libre d’Orange did post a few of the fragrance notes online (rose, mint, herbs), but they were removed shortly after, and I can vouch for the fact that they were not all that helpful…
