The daily lemming

A scented soap that looks like a perfume bottle, from Amsterdam-based designer Liza Witte. You didn't know you needed one, right? Now you know. "A Collection of finely handcrafted perfume bottles sculptured in black soap. These finely crafted objects serve as room fragrance and nourishing soap, each subtly revealing its presence as it releases its lush delicate scent or becomes a lavish body wash as it slowly melts away." They are available in a number of shapes and scents; shown is Silhouette No. 15: "A lush and sensuous blend of orange blossom and deliciously ripe oranges, peppered with spicy clove. Rich, warm and fruity flavors evoke memories of a sunny autumn morning in a Tuscany garden." Handmade to order, €90 (oops!) at Liza Witte, found via The Artisan Fragrance Salon at Facebook.

A veritable treasure trove of historic smells

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2017 2 Comments

A veritable treasure trove of historic smells, Knole House is said to contain 365 rooms. The sprawling mansion has the added benefit of an extensive family archive, which offers the researchers valuable historical context for the objects they are sniffing.

Bembibre has selected a handful of objects and atmospheres to test there, including a pair of fringed, leather gloves from the 1800s (“I think the gloves might have been perfumed”); a unique 1750s potpourri recipe found in the archives; the wax used to polish the furniture; the smell of the “Venetian Ambassador” room; an old book; and more modern smells, like a vinyl record from the family’s collection.

— Cecilia Bembibre is cataloging odors at several locations, including Knole House, once the home of Vita Sackville-West. Read more at Meet the Woman Who Is Preserving the Smell of History at Atlas Obscura. Hat tip to Kevin!
