Wednesday scent of the day 11/1

Posted by Robin on 1 November 2017 269 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, and welcome to November! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing day 2 of my (short) fougère week, with Ineke Idyllwild.

Reminder: 11/3 will be Fougère Friday...wear a fougère, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Qeeboo Rabbit Chair was designed by Stefano Giovannoni and comes in two sizes and in a matching lamp. At Designboom.

Today’s SOTD is Creed Fleurs de Bulgarie mixed with a touch of AG’s Musc Nomade.

I do! I switched to Le Galion 222, which is a fougere according to Fragrantica and which has a similar almost sour note as Encens Chembur.

    Triple rabbit
    Triple strength coffee
    Triple prayers to the universe

This would smell really wonderful without the lavender
    Civet
    Bergamot
    Rosewood
    Jasmine Rose Orris Root
    Oakmoss
    Parfum concentration
A few drops left in my 7.5ml circa 1996 bottle

        Correct, Robin!
        Coumarin, hay
        Vanilla, a bit
        Oakmoss
        Emerge in the first hour.
Would be lovely to me without that $!#@ lavender

Everyone in my social circle and family is safe after yesterday.

Monkey and chubby Buddha and I are listening to Nina Simone, but not on max volume like Bear.

After watching Natalia Vodianova’s jet lag video on Vogue yesterday (a few minutes I won’t get back in my life ) I am in Shalimar Souffle because I think that is what she is spraying in the video but I am not sure. Made me dig out my sample.
I smell like sweet lemon pie

    I haven’t met a Shalimar flanker I didn’t like. No judgement.

Ok here too, but terribly heartbroken about those killed or injured, especially the 5 Argentina friends here celebrating their 30th HS reunion. Just devastating. NYC is a walking city, our sidewalks and paths are so dear to us.. this type of terror is very unsettling.

I think it’s Souffle Intense, right? I have not smelled it but read on some website a while back it had less citrus and more vanilla than Souffle. Like you said, I really never met a Shalimar flanker or version I didn’t like.

I went as a hockey player every year because it was easy to put my older brother’s jersey on over my winter jacket! And black eyes were fun to create with makeup.

So since Bookworm got her chromatography lab technician job, we’ve been desperately trying to find her some shoes that look professional and will protect her feet… in a size 5. When she was working in her research internship at Yale, she was using steel-toe work boots, but nobody there cared what she was wearing, and now she has a dress code (khakis/chinos, collared shirt, no tennis shoes). Thank goodness for Amazon, because we just ordered her 5 pairs of shoes to try.

Last cross-country meet of the season this afternoon.

SOTD is Lolita Lempicka, licorice violet vanilla iris goodness.

Wow, a lab with a dress code?? I spent ~12 y working in chemistry labs in academia, where obviously no one cared, but now I work in industry, and no one STILL cares! I guess I lucked out. Or maybe it’s because I’m in the Bay Area. I had no idea there were labs where people care how you dress!!!

I’m not quite sure if it fits the Fougère criteria but it has lots of lavender so I thought it might do. PdN Maharadjah one of my many successful blind buys, and a wonderful spicy oriental lavender.
The weather is gorgeous today and for once I’m not working on Wednesday so I’m good. Revising a text is much more fun.

Seems like Maharadjah is discontinued right? (They have Maharanih Intense which is a different one I think.) However they do have a room spray called Maharadjah, and strangely they also have an intense version of the Maharadjah room spray (in a cool black bottle). I’m seriously considering getting a room spray and wear it on myself.

Yep, it’s discontinued as a parfum corporel but still exists as room spray and candle. The candle is wonderful as well. Maharanih is very different, very good but very different.

It’s curious that Maharadjah is the only home fragrance they have which is also in an “Intense” form.

Inspired by perfumelover67 (and made possible by her generosity), I’m wearing Tauer L’Eau. Thought I’d try it out in cool weather, and it is lovely. I liked it in warmer weather but the sweetness and powderiness are suited to cooler temps. Reminds me a little of Zeta…

I had to do some research on Fragrantica to be quite honest with you. Common notes are lavender, moss, coumarin and woods, especially coumarin.
I get mostly citrus, grassy notes and a bit of lavender from Idyllwild.
I was surprised that I had several samples from this group! Between the oriental fougeres and the aromatic fougeres, I came up with eight options. Whoops, sorry this is so long.

    SotD = Bogue MEM

Woke up this morning thinking rabbit-rabbit-rabbit then MEM-MEM-MEM, a surprising and possibly fougere-ish thought. I will try to wear MEM a few days until Friday.

When I first sampled MEM in August it was quite sugary. Today the aromatic notes are shining through. Still sweet, but very nice as I love lavender. Also getting a whiff of coconut. Is it possible that ylang ylang + champaca + vanilla = coconut?

Remember NST, smelling great is our superpower, and the world needs us to do our part today and every day.

I like it. It starts off really green and gradually transitions to a kind of buttery sandalwood with a light dusting of dry cocoa. The notes list coconut milk, but I don’t pick it up distinctly. It might be there blending into the sandalwood accord.

Does it seem sweet to you? It doesn’t to me. Its almost like someone decided to make a comfort scent with absolutely zero sweetness. Once it dries down, it just hums along, quietly. I like it, too.

No, it’s not sweet to me. The cocoa facet I mentioned is more like the texture of cocoa powder to me more than actually smelling like cocoa. It is quiet. After the initial blast, I almost forget I have it on unless I put my wrist close to my face.

I continue to defy the CP (not least out of ignorance; does Idyllwild qualify as a fougere? that’s the only thing I have that I can even imagine would work) and today am wearing the delicious, comforting Chergui. Actually, I’m wearing four sprays of Chergui, which is rather a different beast. It really amps up the tobacco/incense/sandalwood.

I just looked up the notes for Chergui on fragrantica, and vanilla isn’t listed. That just boggles my mind. It’s like the time I looked up Cuir de Lancome and it didn’t list leather and I thought I was going crazy (except less extreme).

But WHY is it a fougere? Which of the things I’m smelling is fernlike? Have you ever gotten a fougere scent from an actual fern?

My (limited) understanding of fougere, and I’m ducking here in case fougere-lovers throw shoes at me, is that it’s basically the smell of Men’s Perfume. Your Drakkar Noirs, your Adidas Whatever Sports.

Like, there’s a structure to it (lavender, and other stuff I’d have to google – no fern that I know of) but basically whenever you sniff the air and are like, “a dude has overapplied nearby,” that is the smell of fougeres. I’m sure there are great ones! I’m not trying to put them all down, but if you’re trying to learn to identify what is one, that is the best way I personally have been able to stamp the concept on my brain.

Repeating what I said in yesterday’s poll, in case it helps anyone:

A classic fougere will have lavender, woods, oak moss, coumarin, bergamot — some people called it the masculine version of a chypre, but that’s a little misleading since there are feminine fougeres and masculine / unisex chypres. Jicky is a fougere, as is Maja, & so are things like Brut & Stetson & Old Spice — lots of the classic men’s fragrances.

So heartsick over yesterday’s attack. I first heard because a friend in OK texted to see if we were okay. I knew that meant something happened. That path on the Hudson is such a beautiful spot.

I don’t have anything that I know of that counts as a fougere. I’ll keep looking through the sample stash for Friday, though. For today, I had to go with Lonesome Rider. It’s been a month or longer since I’ve worn it and it is so good on a cold morning!

I thought there were only Aromatic Fougeres but I just found out today about Oriental Fougeres so I now have more choices but I am still not committed to wearing one on Friday.

Hello, all, from a subdued and embarrasses Waterdragon. I need a perfume that blots out utter mortification…the viva was awful. AWFUL. I’ve never before sat through three hours of such gruelling frustration and growing anger. My student didn’t answer the questions she was asked, just kept repeating that she had done this and that, so by implication the examiners were wrong and misguided. The only good thing was that she didn’t directly abuse the examiners. Outcome was six months to carry out some fairly major amendments, but she thinks she can do them in less than a month. Sigh. I will have to face that battle today, I suppose.

What perfume do you wear to forget an experience? Should I add this to my list of perfumes that don’t exist but should? Nothing suggests itself to me, so I’m blindly grabbing, and I have…No 22. Lovely. All that sandalwood; all those aldehydes, all the pretty flowers; yes, this will do nicely as my Scarlett O’Hara scent. Today is another day, new battles and new ideas; tomorrow will be too, and I’ll cope with both as they come.

Titus has a new best friend, a BIC disposable razor that the dear man uses when we travel. He is currently carrying it around and occasionally putting it down between his paws and growling at the other two if they come too close. Clearly, this is a case of, “My Razor—you get your own.” Kittens help with bad experiences. I wish I could be in the moment like them!

    Be well, all.

Oh my goodness. I’d never thought of what it must be like to be the advisor of a student who does poorly at a defense. Your stories of this particular student just fill me with horror. I’m SO glad you’ve got these lovely kittens to take your mind off of her. Just six more months of her, and then you’ll be free! (Oof, that sounds like a long time.)

You need to carry a water pistol and squirt her when she gets unruly. And fun-size chocolate treats when she behaves acceptably. Channel your inner Pavlov. And if that doesn’t work, try Chanel and pavlova.

I have water pistols for the kittens…it never occurred to me to use one on her, but I think you’re right. It’s a non-harming form of behaviour modification that would give all the rest of us some peace. And I have to say, I would really using enjoy it, but then, as she said to me yesterday, I am not at all a nice person.

One of my kitties loves loves loves to carry chopsticks around, as if he is holding a bar in his mouth as he walks a tightrope. He will dig them out of the dishwasher, get them out of the sink, climb onto the stove to remove them from a pan. Fortunately, no injuries have been sustained, or not that I know of!

Had to make a six hour round trip to Invercargill yesterday…the bottom if the world…to see my husband’s surgeon for a follow up. Beautiful green pastures all the way south, rolling hills and such fresh air. Was told that Alex’s pelvis is healing well but the hip is munted and needs replacing in the next few months…bit sobering for a 49 year old to hear. So a bit glum today but wearing Coromandel…what a stunner.

What a lovely sounding drive and I am just sorry that there was bad news at the doctor. I will say that the new hip replacement surgeries are pretty miraculous. My constantly-on-his-feet chef brother had one and was back on his feet literally in days. Another extremely active friend had exercised his hip to nothing and also had an amazingly quick recovery and back to over-exercising time. But I know that’s hard to think about when the pelvic injury is still healing. Best to you both!

I really dont know if there is a fougere somewhere in my sea of samples…..somehow that genre is neglected by me. Maybe because is dont like lavender thar much?

Hmm according to Fragrantica Fou d’Absinthe is an aromatic fougère. I wore that one last saturday!

So, had to go get a new phone this morning and now I’m sitting in urgent care because overnight I seem to have developed a dental abscess. It’s been a tricky Halloween this year.

Looking forward to a healthy spritz of Takalamaken for sure!

SOTD was Atelier des Ors “Larmes du Desert”.

    Top: incense and cypress;
    Mid: patchouli, guaiac wood and cedar;
Base: citruses, amber, benzoin and woody notes.

A faint echo of a lovely perfume. I have yet to wear a benzoin-forward scent that lasts any time on my skin.

SOTE is Serge Lutens “Santal de Mysore”.

Notes are sandalwood, caraway, spices, benzoin and styrax.

A nice thing happened today that I want to share, because we really hear too much about rare-but-awful things. An invoice payment was due to me, and I knew my client had a very temporary cashflow issue. So, I just did the decent thing and said I could wait a week (anyone who works in Accounts Payable will know a week’s delay is barely worth mentioning). Anyhow, my client appreciated this so much they paid my invoice in full, including some work that they weren’t going to be able to rebill and technically need not have paid me. That’s nearly €1000 out of goodwill, just for showing a little patience and understanding.

Fabulous! You wouldn’t think so from reading the news, but most people really ARE nice.

The night I had to evacuate due to wildfire, the hotel I found had just one room left, the ‘executive suite’. Certainly fancier than I and my cats needed, but when you need a hotel room where they will allow pets, and it’s 2am, how much choice do you have? So I agreed of course… and the girl at the desk knocked 15% off just because of the fire. Then the next day, my vet boarded my cats for free for the day. There’s plenty of good in the world when you have a mind to look for it 🙂

Scentless yet, and for about 30 hours I had no sense of smell at all because of my cold and stuffy nose. It was very scary – like someone suddenly turned off my sense of smell. And about 30 minutes ago I suddenly got it back – YES!!! Anosmia is terrible, and being able to smell things again and enjoy the flavors of my food is wonderful. I keep sniffing things and grinning happily. 😀

I’ve just dabbed on some Odori Spigo (it’s 1 a. m. so technically it’s Thursday already, but I’ll count this one as a delayed Wednesday SOTD). A fougere according to Fragrantica but does not smell really fougerish to me. Good sweet lavender.

Definitely not too masculine in my book… it could easily pass as unisex or shared to my nose. I think there is one note that doesn’t play well with the others. Kind of a “What is THAT doing in there??” However, I will retry the sample.

Oy! I completely forgot about the rabbit thing!

SOTD = Patricia de Nicolai Amber Oud

According to Fragrantica, this is Oriental Woody. I beg to differ — there is nothing Woody about this. Lavender is so prominent that I would classify it as Oriental Fougere, if there is such a thing.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Rania J. Ambre Loup. Love. I have at most 2 more wearings from my decant before moving on to using my FB.
