Friday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2017 341 Comments

white

Hey, it's Skank Friday! Our community project for today: wear something skanky.* (If you need help, try here or here.) Thanks to Dawn and Ihadanidea for the idea!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm practicing for our upcoming Reeking Havoc project — on one arm, I've got the old civet standby, Guerlain Jicky, in vintage Extrait. On the other, the indolic Tawaf from La Via del Profumo. I smell just gorgeous.

Reminder: on 10/6, wear a fragrance with lily, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is white flower against blue [cropped] by edward musiak at flickr; some rights reserved.

* The definition of skanky, from A Perfumista Lexicon: a fragrance with animalic or other “sexy” notes. Skanky has pejorative connotations in “regular” slang, but among many perfumistas, it is meant as a compliment. The use of the term to apply to perfume was popularized by March at Perfume Posse.

Mid-eighties Bal à Versailles, gloriously corrupt and suggestive. They absolutely don’t make them like this any more.

NICE. Maybe some day I’ll get my hands on some really vintage BaV, although in truth I never felt the need — my understanding is that well into the nineties it was still the same formula.

My older sister wore this in the 80s. Since I coveted everything that was hers I would sneak sprays when she was out. Gorgeous sense memories!

I do love BaV – such sexy smelling stuff. I think my bottle is 80’s (ish). Unfortunately, it’s another one that I can’t wear to work.

    Triple strength coffee
    Extra long workout
Absolue Pour le Soir Maison Francis Kurkdjian.
Not suggestive on me, cumin, amber, honey. Honey!
Wanted some sourdough and Plugra with my late supper spinach salad yesterday.
Picked the bread, went the dairy aisle (2 items, I had to walk the entire store, LOLOLOL) .
The same woman I saw at the bakery was sniffing the air as I retrieved the butter.
That is a wonderful cologne, I would wear it myself if it wasn’t for men.
    No worries, I’m wearing a woman’s perfume.
I thought her already arched-too-high eyebrows would shoot off her head!
    LOLOLOL
    😉
It’s Diva by Ungaro. You’re welcome.
    🙂
It does smell like a honeymoon suite stocked with flowers, a do not disturb on the door for the past 72 hours.
    😉
    Carpe Diem.
    Peace.

Wearing Dzing and got an ultimatum from my hubby: Not to wear this perfume anymore in my whole life again as long as he is around. 😀 He said I strongly smell of wet camel hair and that I contaminate clothes and everything around with it. He was really annoyed.

He barely tolerantes any type of perfume. Even though he is not against my perfume wearing or collection (he sometimes buys some for me), I have to be very careful when he is around. Flower body lotions lightly applied or a perfume spritz work better in this case.
Next time I will spray on Dzing after he is gone for work. Patience!

I always spray on perfume after he is out or just before I leave home. I can wear almost anything around him, as long as it is no more than one spray. As I say he prefers light florals. However, he does not say a word when my MIL drenches herself in La Vie est Belle. I guess he just does not want to hurt her feelings with a negative comment about her perfume….

Mine uses facial adjectives. There is “you smell like perfume!” with a look of revulsion and “you smell like perfume” with a look of relative neutrality. Sometimes–and this usually happens when I’m wearing a Dame–I get a “you smell like perfume 🙂 “

My husband is also no fan of perfume. He gets migraines from scent, and it seems to be getting worse so I generally only wear perfume at work – and light stuff at that. Light stuff is generally my taste, but I miss being able to wear some darker stuff – or having someone tell me they like my perfume! Have to get my compliments elsewhere 😉

You have that one too? Awesome – I’ll bet it smells better on you than on me. I’ve gone through 2 of the small, more-liftable bottles, and have the HEFTY bigger one in reserve. I have to just set that one near the edge of a sturdy shelf and hold my wrist in the spray’s path because I can’t simultaneously hold it and spray it. 🙂

In that vein, I’m going to go with Serge Noir this morning. At some point, this dries down to the most delicious, warm cloud of incense that envelopes me in the nicest way. I think a lot of people find this reminiscent of body odor. I don’t, but I’ll be taking a shower before I meet some friends for lunch, just in case.

Yay Skank Friday! I’m in L’A al Oudh, which is loaded with cumin (my favorite skank). That said, probably my skankiest scent is Diptyque Oud Palao, which has a strong animalic note on top of the oud, but I decided that needed to wait for a cooler day. Happy Weekend!

Cumin works really well on me (I get compliments on al Oudh all the time, and it’s not exactly a typical crowd-pleaser) but I have to stay FAR away from anything with any type of pee note because I will smell like a barn. Grapefruit, honey, etc. – all very dicey!

Heading to work, and had two skank choices, APLS (sweaty man) or Angel Liquor (cat pee) shockingly I went with cat pee. I’ve been trying to wear APLS for almost two years, and I still can’t wear it. To me cat pee is one of the worst smells ever, but in Angel Liquor I really only detect it if I hold my wrist to my nose. If I remember not to do that, I can enjoy it. I think it’s the honey in both of these that gives me trouble. I would love to smell APLS on someone else. Has anyone tried anything from the Ganache perfume line? They are having a real good sale right now, and am curious.

I’d been missing Prairie Nymph recently, but I wouldn’t put it in the skank category except for maybe the mousey musk note I get from it counts as such. Mouse doesn’t equal skank to me, although musk can. For some reason, I interpret skank as having a sorta piercing or pungent note. Huh, go figure …

Since Robin has chosen to reek havoc (yay!) I’m joining her and have added a dab of Rochas Tocade to the mix, aka “That Slut Tocade” courtesy of mals. Voila! Prairie Nympho.

Penhaligon’s sadly discontinued Amaranthine- a delightfully skanky white floral. I’m down to my last 10ml!! SOTD is Orto Parisi Stercus, which has got to be the most… skanky, yes, but also borderline repulsive scent I have at the moment. I really do enjoy it on cold fall days like today but it is not one anyone in my family can appreciate. To me, it is dark and oddly floral. I try not to think about the inspiration. This one is not going on the full bottle wishlist but I will likely eventually finish the sample.

A small dab of Guerlain Derby from a neglected decant. Dabbed, it’s fairly tame, but I do get an animalic leather when I spray. This is what I imagined Bandit would smell like before I ever tried Bandit. Bandit smells like galbanum-laced baby powder on me.
Derby is dark, leathery, a little green and herbal, and slightly oily but also smooth and elegant.

I’ve been wearing Dryad, which isn’t really skanky but it’s an office day. I almost love it but not quite enough to pay £128 for 50ml. If the drydown was a tiny bit mellower….

Will put some vintage Miss Dior on when I get home.

I am wearing APLS, but after seeing some nice ideas here, I am going to add a spritz each of El Attarine and Aziyadé, which I love and teeter right on the border of skanky. I think they have cumin but it’s well-blended enough to be tolerable.

I am really looking forward to reeking havoc week.

Hey’s it’s Friday! National Coffee Day.

    1) Am in a combo of Aromatics Elixir shower gel and SJP Stash oil, which is a perfect sensual combo-sexy as hell and yet because it is close to the skin and clothes appropiate for work.

    2) And back to the rain! Much needed. I am gonna just try to rescue the lavender with some plant food and plenty of water & compost, and a rainy weekend will definitely help!

SOTD is BeauFort London “Iron Duke”.

Notes are leather, tobacco, rum and gunpowder.

The leather is animalic (not overwhelmingly so) and at times I could swear I get citrus and/or ginger-like spice. The effect is meant to suggest the Duke of Wellington astride his horse (animal; leather and metal; gunpowder in the air). I like it, and will re-test when I’m over my cold and can smell better. :^)

I’m not sure this one quite slides over the border into skanky though, so I think my skankiest scent this week remains yesterday’s Absolue pour le Soir.

French Lover (in its Bois d’Orage packaging). Was commando until after my bodywork lesson this afternoon. I have only five perfumes to choose from, because that’s all I brought with me (am in Rome for four months): FL and Iris Poudré (YAY, travel sprays), and decants of Bottega Veneta, Infusion d’Iris, and 31RC. Somehow I thought I would have more time to browse through the perfume shops — such was my intention! — but I have been terribly busy, and got a fairly cold shoulder in the one I tried (my Italian is intermediate-level and I am clearly American, two points that usually cancel one another out, but I guess I picked the wrong day or the wrong shop).

For nearly 30 years, I could not do skank in any noticeable quantities on my skin, whether in classic or modern perfumes. Last winter, while visiting the DSH Studio, I picked up a bottle, gave it a sniff, and then spritzed. I was overcome by the softest, furriest, coziest fragrance I’d ever tried. Entranced, I turned over the bottled, and was shocked to see the name, since I knew from Dawn’s newsletter that it was her new animalic fragrance. It grew more and more gorgeous as it warmed on my skin. I immediately added the largest bottle of it as EDP to the day’s purchase, and I wore it constantly during the winter and spring. It’s the one I chose for today, as it is utterly office friendly, and great year-round: DSH Chinchilla. If skank scares you, or hasn’t worked for you ever before, I *urge* you to sample this beauty. It will change your mind about animalics!

I’ve now worked up the nerve to try deeper animalics, and several of them have joined Chinchilla in my wardrobe, including the furry daddy to Chinchilla’s doe-eyed baby skank, DSH Foxy (which would have also been perfect for today, except that I prefer that one in cooler weather). MKK still hates me, but Salome, Zoologist Civet, and vintage No 5 have all joined Chinchilla and Foxy on my ‘skank shelf.’ ????

Ottoman Empire by very very very talented Russian Adam of Areej le Dore. It has real musc in it, but I am not feeling much skankiness (which is a good thing). I am still getting my feet wet with skank, and have been scarred by a few fragrances – MKK, Miel de Bois, Musc Tonkin. Ottoman Empire however is on a whole new level and is making me appreciate natural ingredients more and more.

Friday! Finally! My body is exhausted. I ran 1 mi yesterday for the first time since my foot broke. That’s a lot harder when your legs are so unaccustomed to bearing weight. I also did 21 push-ups and 17 sit-ups, and am sore in muscles that I’d forgotten I have. Then we walked 6.2 miles to get to and from a Maroon 5 concert (woooooo!) to avoid the horrific traffic, so really I’m just tired everywhere. On the upside, my foot held up pretty well.

I’m in Guerlain Flora Nymphea! It has a touch of honey in it, which is often interpreted as skank. Of course, FN is just the prettiest, soft-cloudiest, gauziest of scents, so…not really any skank at all.

    Happy almost-weekend, all!

AWESOME. This was actually the third time I’d seen them, and from the absolute worst seats (free lawn seats through Alaska Airlines), but it was still tons of fun. Adam Levine is still gorgeous, and–when in the zone–an excellent singer. I also love seeing the dynamic between him and one of the guitarists. He also messed up “This Love,” but had the grace to joke about it 🙂 so it ended up being cute and not embarrassing. He also changed up some melodies, which I imagine is what one has to do to avoid getting too bored with old music. It was a good mix of old and new, with the loudest cheers for the oldest stuff, of course.

I was just thinking that I basically grew up alongside M5. They first became popular when I was in high school, and I was in love with Adam Levine then, and now, at 30, still am. It’s kind of nice.

Have you tried Adam Levine’s fragrance for women? It’s really good for its price range (VERY inexpensive, and now widely available at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, online discounters, etc.) In fact, I think it’s really good, period. Fragrantica says: “The nose behind this fragrance is Yann Vasnier. Top notes are saffron, citruses, marigold and spices; middle notes are indian jasmine, australian sandalwood and rose petals; base notes are benzoin and vanila.” It smells more expensive than it is.

I love SM, on skin it reads like a leather/aoud perfume, with a touch of floral but not distinctly iris.
The first time I wore it, my MIL asked me what I was wearing…
Imagine my explanation? I was at a loss.. :O

I can’t do much skank – I must have enough naturally – as it seems to magnify on me to levels that aren’t tolerable – ha!
So to try and get on theme today I went with A Lab on Fire – Messy Sexy Just Rolled Out of Bed.
At least it sounds a little skanky from the name, and their ad copy made you think it might smell a bit on a raunchy side. But really I find it very soft and comforting – a stay in rainy Saturday don’t fix your hair kind of day – I could use one of those!!!

The notes for Messy Sexy look really similar to their Mon Musc a Moi….have you tried the latter? I’m really interested to know if Messy Sexy is a repackaged Mon Musc.

        Hey Eldiyen –

I’m so sorry not to have seen this earlier! Been out of town working, yes I’ve tried both – and while they are similar they are two different scents. Mon Musc is much “muskier” on me – it has a musk bite that Messy Sexy doesn’t have – at least on me. I prefer the Messy Sexy – for this theme I think the “skank” factor is greater with the Mon Musc. I’m very glad I sampled both as I would not want a bottle of the Mon Musc, but do of the Messy. Some sources reported that the two are the same scent, one marketed to Europe (Messy) and the other, Mon Musc, for the US. I would disagree with that, and also point out that Barney’s is now carrying the Messy so it can be purchased stateside now as well.
Hope you see this and that it helps!

Absolue pour le Soir- Soooo beautiful, I could cry. Daytime was Laurie Erickson’ s Sienna Musk, which isn’t necessarily skank, but a good dose of sleepy musk is in there.

Very late today. Just another bad night. I’m wearing Jubilation 25 to see if the funk I detect is skank. I think it is. I don’t smell delicious, exactly, more…complicated, darkly moody, even slightly feral. Oh yeah! But should I waste this on scrubbing the grout? Nah. I think I’ll put in a lace top and announce that we’re having dinner or lunch out, maybe both ????

    Be well, all.

I’m in a couple of minis from an antique store…Ungaro Diva and Nina Ricci Nina. Fragrantica says they both have civet and oak moss, and that is why I purchased them.

Diva definitely has something spicy going on, but lots of floral, too. Sadly, the Nina has mostly gone to baby powder, so no skank or civet clues there.

Does anyone have any opinions about these two? I also picked up Parfum d’Hermes, Krizia Uomo for men and Leonard Fashion, but haven’t tried them yet.

Skank on, ladies and gents. ????

I really like Diva, and I do get the civet, along with a spicy rose. I love a big 80s perfume, but I wear that one sparingly. I think if I got a backup bottle, it would be another mini.

I am wearing Siberian musk, by Areej le Doré. From a sample.

I dont think it is skanky, but it IS very musky (not the clean variant though).
    Its gorgeous!

I loved skank week! Even though I have a hard time defining skank.

Salome and Maai are mostly just cuddly cosy to my nose. Not skanky. But I know some people rate then pretty high on the skank-o-meter. Isnt it funny how scent and smell work?!

I think the skankiest frag on my skin this week was Montecristo. I did get a bit of a body odour vibe from it after two hours. But its still a nice version of body odour. Not the sour arm pit variant.

I don’t find it that skanky, but this is all I felt fine wearing to the office. I’ll put something skankier on tonight when I get home. Maybe Oudh Infini (thanks, Elizabeth!)…

Late as usual. Tried vintage Arpege sprayed on a tissue and practically killed the dog, who ran from the room. So SoTD is vintage Cabochard, which the dog likes, but which is asphyxiating me, even sprayed behind knee. Sillage is insane, feels pretty skanky although it’s not on any of the skank lists y’all have put forth. I love it but wonder how I got away with this in the 70s.

Cabochard’s a leather scent (albeit with musk amongst all the other notes), and I only have the recent version, but I imagine the vintage might have some skankiness.

I don’t do skank deliberately!! Was up the town today and went to Lush. I suppose the jasminy indole which always hangs round the stores, and soaks into the SAs and customers counts as skank, so I am in the zone today.
SOTD on one arm is Lush Rose Jam Body spray (bought that, simply gorgeous lemony turkish delight rose) and on the other Lush Coffee and Cardamon. ( I really want that, next pay day it is mine). Coffee note is first and is ok but cardamom spicy soapy section is awesome.

    Commuting Woes No. 395:

A guy on the train was sitting on the middle seat of a 3-seater, his coat draped on the aisle seat with no one sitting by the window. I gestured that I would like to sit on the aisle seat and he gave me the dirtiest look!! Seriously, you dirtbag – you DO NOT OWN the train and I can darn well sit where you have selfishly taken over an entire row of seats. And by the way, the next time you have to take a long transcontinental flight somewhere, I hope you get squished between a couple who decided not to sit next to each other because they couldn’t fit in a regular seat.

I thought I would not be participating in the CP since I do not do skank. But Robin’s choice (actually, the discussion of the possibility of it yesterday) gave me the idea: even though I do not classify this scent as such, I love Jicky extrait – so I’m wearing it now (it’s 5-6 years old, so not a vintage). It’s such a pleasant lavender…

Wearing Cartier La Panthere edp, from a decant given to me by the lovely mjane3. I had smelled it on paper, and thought “meh.” It was clean and a bit boring. When I tried it on skin, however, and it warmed up a bit, I thought, “oh, my.” It starts off as a peppery floral (I don’t really get the fruit, or at least no sweetness), and then ends up smelling like sex. Specifically, like sex with a woman. I think I might need one of those delightful little panther bottles, if I ever muster the nerve to wear it in public.
