Clive Christian Private Collection ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2017 11 Comments

Clive Christian Private Collection

Luxury niche line Clive Christian has launched Private Collection, with 10 new fragrances: five for men and five for women, spelling out the name Clive.

A striking collection of 10 characterful perfumes of incomparable complexity, which celebrate extraordinary lifetime moments and memories via an exciting and sublime olfactory discovery of the senses

C ~ "A collection that evokes the wild and invigorating beauty of the Scottish landscape where Clive was born, these perfumes recall its majesty and elemental beauty. While C Green Floral draws on the creaminess of jasmine absolute and rose, C Woody Leather dabbles in green leaves, tobacco and oak moss."

L ~ "This collection brings to life Clive's experiences as a young designer arriving in the bustling metropolis of London, and discovering the concept of luxury craftsmanship that would come to shape his whole life. An energetic fragrance, L Floral Chypre sparkles with pink pepper and peach, while L Woody Oriental is striking with bergamot, geranium and cedarwood."

I ~ "Complex and evocative, this pair delves into Clive's work as the charismatic doyen of luxury interiors. While an elaborate, joyful fusion of mandarin, jasmine and patchouli characterises both I Woody Floral and Clive's work; I Amber Oriental meanwhile fuses earthy juniper berry, havana and fir balsam to conjure the scent of his master workshop."

V ~ "The V collection is an exotic and fragrant ode to Clive Christian's eldest daughter and her love for perfume. Bergamot, black pepper and frankincense allow V Fruity Floral to reflect her elegance and grace, while V Amber Fougere captures the complexity and woody resinous notes with the uplifting scent of cassis."

E ~ "The E collection was inspired by the opulent interior of Buckingham Palace as glimpsed by Clive when he was inducted into the honours list; it also captures his immense sense of pride on the occasion. While E Green Fougere is made luminous with fresh notes of rose, lavender and narcissus, E Gourmande Oriental has a resinous amber base and uses of rum, labdanum and maple."

7 of the 10 Clive Christian Private Collection fragrances can be found now at Selfridge's in the UK, £275 each for 50 ml.

Well, there’s ten more on the heap.

I thought it was bad five years ago, when there were at least a thousand new scents launched a year, but it must be worse now, with so many collections hitting the shelves in addition to single scents. Who could keep up with the onslaught?

If I’m counting correctly, this makes 26 just from Clive Christian, in the last two years. It’s mind numbing.

I have a hard time taking brands like this seriously. I just avoid them.
Maybe i am so wrong and am missing out on great stuff, but i’d rather spend my money on a smaller/indie (or whatever you call it) brand.
I know that whole ‘one woman brand/indie/artisan’ label is also part marketing and image, but at least they dont look that greedy…haha.

Btw dont get me wrong! I do also buy and smell ‘normal’ big brands. Of course.
They dont charge me hundreds for a small bottle. 🙂

Well, I don’t seek them out either, especially if I was not impressed with early releases.

I was trying to figure out how many scents were being launched each year and stumbled on a CNBC story from 2016 which was headlined, “This industry launched 100 products last year, but a top seller is 94 years old”. A hundred? They’re off by an order of magnitude! Basenotes says there were over 2000 in 2015. (There were another 1800 in 2016.) And there’s no way Basenotes is catching every single launch, either. And that doesn’t count scented products, of course, like hand cream, room fresheners, and crayons.

There is no one single place IMHO that has a definitive number, but I tend to go with Michael Edwards, who doesn’t include everything but who does give you an idea of how the industry is changing. These are my own notes from various sources citing his numbers, sometimes I see more than one number so who knows which is right:

          1983: 30
          1990: 76
          1992: 101 (21 niche)
          2000: 389
          2002: 464 (100 niche)
          2003: 581
          2005: 454
          2006: 693
          2007: ?815
          2008: around 800
          2009: around 800
2010: tracked 1125. officially added to book: 850
          2011: 1220 (fewer than 300 niche)
          2012: 1330 (niche 331)
          2013: 1610 (niche 540)
          2014: 1768 (artisan 526) (later saw a count of 1894, artisan 603)
          2015: 2044 (artisan 817) (later saw 2077 / 877)
          2016: 2240 (artisan 865)

He does *not* include all indie. I assume for 2016 there were around 2500 launches.
