What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
Based on the quote I posted yesterday, I went with Tauer Perfumes Lonesome Rider. It seemed a good fit not only some of the particular smells mentioned, but also the general air of nostalgia, and it ties in with Hemingway's image as a rugged, hyper-masculine outdoorsman. Given the weather here, though, I'm wearing about a drop, and I'm staying safely inside with the air conditioning on full blast. I am not a rugged, hyper-masculine outdoorsman.

thanks to Robin for this quote yesterday which inspired my SOTD-
“He smelled the odor of the pine boughs under him, the piney smell of the crushed needles and the sharper odor of the resinous sap from the cut limbs.”
A few years ago Mr. CM8 and I cut down a white pine tree. I gathered up the resinous sap from the cut limbs into a glass container and made an essential oil blend by combining it with a carrier oil and emerging the container in hot water so that the sticky sap and oil would combine.
From that I made an essential oil perfume for a younger family member looking for a sweet incense perfume (she loves Chinatown)…the pine sap was the star, but I also added frankincense, labdanum, oppoponax, bourbon vanilla, lavender, cedarwood, jasmine, bergamot and a very healthy dose of oakmoss. This is my scent today.

Have we ever done a community project centered around friendship?
here’s why I ask ( if you can bear with my digressions!) –
I could not think of what to wear next week as I don’t have any perfumes from the perfumers . So thought I might go with something my best friend included in her many perfume gift packages. And then I thought how fun it would be to do a “wear a perfume that reminds you of your friend” or “wear your best friend’s signature scent” or “wear your best friend’s favorite note”.
Then I did some research and discovered that International Friendship Day in 2017 is on August 6 and International Womens Friendship Day in 2017 is on August 21 (although I really would hate to leave out our male perfumistas who I adore equally as our women!)…..
any chance we could do a friendship related community project in the month of August?

Ooh! Best friend project would be fun and it would also push me well out of my comfort zone. My closest friend is a true patchouli head, and it smells great on her but isn’t really in my wheelhouse.

You are welcome! There was a shop that was a “create your own scent” and they had tons of combinations to make a signature fragrance – I don’t remember the name or if it’s still in business. Someone I knew made the most glorious perfume and I always walked next to her to get a sniff.
Wonder if it was Garden Botanika? I think they were taken over by another company and now only sell online under another name. You can still make a customized fragrance by selecting 6 fragrant notes.

The gal that works in my pharmacy smells so good and I asked her if she wears patchouli oil. She told me “no” that she has this company make her perfume and she chooses only “patchouli” for all six parts of it. I told her it would be much cheaper to just get perfumers alcohol and add your own patchouli oil….her response? “Nah, I am too lazy!”

Hey, you’d be the person to ask this–I have a bunch of herbs (rosemary, thyme, basil, cilantro, and mint), tomato leaves, and roses, and I’d love to be able to capture their scent. Do you have suggestions of how to do this? I loved your idea of the pine sap. I imagine something hardy like rosemary might just be easy to soak in a nice carrier oil, but something like basil might rot? I’ve made infused alcohols for drinking in the past, but if you have insight into how to make scented materials for use in perfume or body oils, I’d love your advice.

also, if you love vanilla and use body oils like crazy and don’t want to spend on Tauer or Aftelier I am going to recommend you infuse cut vanilla beans in a carrier oil and let marinate for at least a month…I have made the most delicious vanilla oil doing this for a fraction of the cost of vanilla e.o which is now completely out of stock at my favorite e.o. online store.

And you do know that olive oil is a great body moisturizer too? I use it when I need to take make up off – especially mascara.
and solid coconut oil is nice too and smells lovely in the summer….you can add citrus oils to that too to make it smell tropical….add some baking soda and you have an instant natural deodorant…

Vierges et Toreros. Basically just mentholated tuberose plus leather. Actually not bad but much simpler than you’d think it would be.
I need to try that one again. It did not wow me the first time as much as I thought it would.
Yeah, it doesn’t have that wow factor. I only have some because I bought that coffret of 16 10-mL bottles, the good (Rossy de Palma) and bad (Sécretions Magnifiques) all jumbled together.
I was considering of Rossy de Palma for today because of Spain, and any woman who knew Hemingway probably would have needed an Eau de Protection. 😉

Robin, I was planning to wear Lonesome Rider today as well (Idaho, the general solitary/ independent vibe), but it’s a billion degrees here and I couldn’t bear it. I chose Escentric 2 instead – it vaguely reminds me of gin and tonic, and I’m sure Hemingway drank at least one gin and tonic in his lifetime.

Oooh, that’s interesting! Carrots and potatoes sometimes have an earthy slightly metallic smell I love.
He did drink gin and tonic, which he liked to make extra-bitter with a few drops of Angostura, but his favourite drink was a daiquiri, which was pretty far the modern drink — four ounces of white rum, a few ounces of lime juice, a cup or so of grapefruit juice, and a lot of crushed ice. (And he could knock back a half dozen of those in a single bout.) Clearly this was a man who liked booze and bitterness.
It’s funny you say that- my mom and dad made Daiquiris in the same manner. But then again, they are from Central America/Caribbean from a certain time, and bone sugar drinks was not done in their youth.

I woke up this morning planning on wearing CB I Hate Perfume North Atlantic Accord to mirror Old Man and the Sea, but I tested it last night, and it just did not thrill me this AM.
So, I went with Amouage Bracken Woman – I smell of small ferns peeking out of damp woodlands.
I tested Bracken and it was a very green scent. Very nice!

I went with the macho idea and am wearing Yatagan. I know assigning gender to perfume is ridiculous and arbitrary, yet somehow this one generally feels too masculine for me – I like it better on my husband.
I’m with you — I try to avoid assigning gender to scents because it’s stupid but some things just smell ineluctably feminine (lily of the valley soliflores) and others masculine (Yatagan for sure).
I was fascinated to read that Iris Apfel began wearing her husband’s Yatagan when her signature Mitsouko stopped smelling like Mitsouko.
Interesting. I adore Mitsouko and don’t smell much similarity to Yatagan.
Agree, it’s curious. I’m trying to remember the interview. I don’t think she said she thought they smelled the same. She may just like the strong character of Yatagan. Also, Mitsouko smelled different when she began wearing it decades ago.

A few years ago I visited the Hemingway house in Key West. Now I can’t help but associate him with the smell of the ocean. So, SOTD is The Different Company Sel de Vetiver. It’s been awhile: this smells wonderful!
Gorgeous! I had Sel de Vetiver as one of my choices for today, but I just needed something very simple and super easy to wear. You smell fab!
Like Robin, it is way too hot here for my choice, Profumum Fumidus, so I am inside under the AC with just one spritz. Also added a spritz of Bottega on the other arm – smelling like leather and peaty scotch.

In honor of both birthdays, I’m wearing several generous splashes of 4711, which was likely created around the same time as Cleveland’s founding and was still on the market for the entirety of Hemingway’s lifespan.

SOTD is ELdO Fils de Dieu, because the limes in it remind me of Key West, I guess…? A very C-plus entry for sure, but I honestly haven’t read much Hemingway and my inventory is not terribly expansive. 😀
I have been to the Hemingway House in Key West though, and highly recommend a visit, especially if you are a cat lover!

I’m not participating today, wearing a vintage cotton muslin Cacherel dress, with a Liberty strawberry print on it, and wanted to match my perfume to the fun and fruity dress. I only have one perfume with red berries, Quel Amour!, so went with that. Coffee & homemade carrot cake at beautiful country garden centre with friends this morning, to celebrate last day of term!
No more jumping out of bed and rushed mornings for seven weeks, yippee!

I also chose a sea scent. Wearing M. Micallef Black Sea. It must meld well with my body chemistry. People often lean in, smell me and then pronounce “You smell great!” Usually, by that time, I can’t even smell it on me or quickly remember what I sprayed that morning. It’s an odd, lingering fragrance. Wonder why I don’t reach for it more often.
I also went with the obvious 1899 Hemingway. I was wondering if anyone was planning on wearing Imaginary Authors Bull’s Blood. I would have if I’d had some.

I’m wearing Chanel No. 19 today, to honor Hemingway’s time in Paris. I know the time frame doesn’t fit (No. 19 was launched in 1970), but it fit the weather today (extremely hot) and the theme.

My husband and I visited Hemingway House in Key West a few years ago. Descendants of Hemingway’s pet cats continue to live on the premises 🙂
It’s great, right? They have all of this antique furniture roped off so no one sits on it, and during the tour, I was about to ask the guide how they manage to keep 50+ cats off of it, when one particularly fluffy little lady scampered in the room and answered it for me: they don’t. XD
A fair number of the cats on the premises have extra toes, offspring of a multi-toed cat given to Hemingway, and these polydactyl cats are found in port cities all along the east coast of North America and the UK, because they were considered extra good luck on ships. They’re sometimes called Hemingway cats: there are quite a few of them in Halifax, where I used to live.
I was born and grew up in Halifax – just read an article on CBC.ca about the “Feuding feral cats of the HMC Dockyard and the ex-sailor who feeds them”. There are some great photos of the cats! Sigh… now I’m homesick!

Key West sounds fascinating.
Would love to visit the house, if not just for the cats. The one in a the photo looks like it may be a Maine Coon, which commonly have extra digits…. we briefly had one, but he preferred a home as solo cat. Too big a personality to make room for siblings….gorgeous animal.
Yes! The cat in the picture looks exactly like my dearly departed cat who I was certain was at least part Maine Coon … except that my poor baby never looked that arrogantly confident in his life. He liked me and pretty much nobody else on earth, and was petrified of anyone he didn’t know well. No extra digits, but big, room-filling personality. I miss him terribly.

I’ve been curious about the Kriglers but skeptical that the current versions bear much resemblance to the originals. Has anyone tried them?
What I’m actually wearing is Hermes Un Jardin apres la Mousson. I read somewhere that JCE considers it his most underrated fragrance. I like the delicacy. It has an attract/repel effect similar to fresh coriander. With other fragrances, such as Etro Palais Jamais, that has sometimes, ultimately, evolved into love. Also, although I wouldn’t have thought of it, the combination of notes creates a cantaloupe effect, as Robin noted in her review (but without using any of those melonic aroma chemicals, I think). Cantaloupe itself has an attract/repel character for me.
Has anyone tried the Kriglers, or had this experience of attract/repel sometimes evolving into perfume love?

34 Blvd St Germain has an attract/repel aspect for me. It has a richness and “funk” that makes me turn away and then come right back for another sniff.

Do they claim to have been worn by famous people who say otherwise? Or do they make claims that are utterly unsubstantiated?
Right, they don’t cite any basis for that claim, and one sees inconsistent information on different sites. Of course, I suppose that’s to be expected since people would likely have worn more than one fragrance over time.
I have not looked into it personally. People who have looked into it have found no trace of Creed’s existence before 1975 except as a tailor. I am told nobody has ever seen anything, in letters, biographies, etc, that any of the famous people Creed says wore their perfumes ever mentioned them…that is, Creed is the sole source of the information. Nobody has ever found an old bottle at auction. Etc etc.
I understand Eight & Bob is doing the same.
But I have not, in fact, attempted to do any research on the matter. I just take all these brand claims about deceased people who wore their perfumes with a HUGE grain of salt.
The Jackie Kennedy connection to Krigler, for instance (see below), does not appear in the press until 2016, then it is suddenly widely reported. I would guess the source of that information is Krigler.
Although I would add that Eight & Bob includes this on their website:
“The story of Eight & Bob is based on a family story transmitted verbally over time. For its final narration fictionalized facts and characters were introduced.”

I just looked it up and answered my own question- Lieber Gustav 14 by Krigler is supposed to be an amazing lavender. Never tried it myself. I am now intrigued by this line. I think it can be bought in a high end hotel in NYC…the Crown Plaza? Someone correct me if I am wrong…
Yes you are correct. According to their website, from which I ordered my samples/bottle, they are located at the Plaza and in Beverly Hills California at The Four Seasons.

Hemingway was brilliant, but probably not “kind”. I think many prominent geniuses probably have difficulty detaching their focus from their passions to exhibit empathy.

My scent today is based on a memory, inspired by my husband’s love of Hemingway’s writing (we visited his memorial in Sun Valley). Years ago, we arrived in Paris after a long flight delay en route from San Francisco. I was exhausted but got a second wind after a late dinner. So, we took a long walk to visit La Closerie des Lilas, where we sat at the beautiful bar and saw mementos of the various writers, including Hemingway, who frequented the place. I remember having a bourbon sour that was not just delicious but gorgeous. A perfect first night in Paris.
Therefore, Lilac is the scent of the day via a shower using Blanc Lilas soap followed by Desarmant. (And tonight I will order a whiskey sour at dinner….)
Desarmant is gorgeous…..and I love a good whisky sour 🙂

I had nothing obviously related to today’s theme, so I went with a generous spray of L de Lubin, a sample of which just came in with my latest perfume order. Whoa. Mistake.

A lot of yoga centers discourage fragrance, but I agree with Ede97005 that when well considered, they can enhance the practice.

I like to put a few drops of something on the back of my hands before yoga.
What do you wear?
I usually put something very light on top of my feet which I can smell in forward bend…lots of times it is an essential oil…and if the class isn’t too crowded our yoga teacher applies an essential oil blend (usually one I have gifted her) to our third eye when we are in shavasanna.
Agreed with this. Like using jasmine absolute or sandalwood at the base of the spine, top of the neck and topside of hands. Only a tiny drop!
Yeah, I spray it on several hours before I go to class and just one spritz. No one can smell it in the class. My studio doesn’t have a policy because we’ve never had an issue. People are courteous. Most of the time I don’t wear a perfume because I use Aveda blue oil/active oil on my neck and shoulders before class, or sombra gel. All of those are wintergreen and/or peppermint. My studio sometimes diffuses essential oils in the waiting area so I’m not worried about anyone being bothered by my muscle soothing oils.
Am I really the only one in Histoires de Parfums 1899 Hemingway? I couldn’t come up with any grand ideas so went totally literal in my pick. Notes include juniper, orange blossom, iris, vetiver.

1) SOTD: In honor of Hemingway, a splash of Florida Water upon getting up this morning followed by Grove New York, a cologne that evokes Bay Rum. This is very much the scent of most Caribbean/ Central American men on their day off, along with their fine shirts and straw hats. This would be the overall aura of Cuba and Florida when Hemingway was there so long ago.
2) Iced coffee and gluten free donut FOR THE WIN, Y’all. Treats taste incredible when they are EXACTLY that.
3) SO much STUFF happening this weekend! Beaverton Night Market! Picnics in Rose City Park! Sunday Parkways! Night swimming at Wilson Pool!

If I was more dedicated to Hemingway/the Friday poll I’d wear something grapefruity to represent a Hemingway daiquiri (delish drink, btw) but I’ve been overdosing on grapefruit lately. Instead I’m trying Il Marinaio da Capri (The Sailor from Capri), a sample included in my recent DSH order, which was full of stuff I’m loving.
I really like that one. I got the body lotion too.

Continuing with my I-don’t-like-Hemingway-as-a-personality-or-an-author-so-why-bother theme, today I smelled of fried rice in the morning. Now, 5 h later, I smell of spice cookies. Which is to say, today I am wearing the marvelous SL Arabie! Thanks to those who participated in my split and thus permitted me to have 15 ml of this wonderful stuff.

State of Emergency in Dunedin today due to heavy rain…it’s bucketing down. I live on a hill so don’t have flooding problems except the laundry fills with water. Yesterday when I walked the dogs I lost them in the mist and it was very spooky. So, looking for a cosy comfort scent and will dip into Waterdragon’s sample gift and go with Jubiliation 25 . When it rains like this the sparrows I feed move into the dog kennel to keep dry. I was just thinking that I love perfume. Going to play perfume shops with my samples today and finish a short story ( from the comfort of my bed).

I had a few choices for today, but went with HdP’s 1899 Hemingway, from the sample stash. I’m thinking that one of Hajusuuri’s favorites, Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant, would have been more compatible with the super-muggy weather. Or maybe AG Nuit Etoilee, based on the conversations I had with Chocolatemarzipan8 earlier this week.
Robin, has there been a “perfume for the occasion” Friday project? What I was thinking of was the strangest occasion people have had where an event and a perfume matched perfectly. Mine was wearing SL Sarrasins while touring the Battleship New Jersey on a cool and windy April day.
Will add to list! That might be more of a weekend poll, though, since on Friday morning not everyone will be off to anyplace other than work 🙂
I got back last night from a trip to northern Italy. I spent part of my time in a town where Hemingway lived while working as an ambulance driver during WWI. Anyway, I had tried to read A Farewell to Arms in preparation for my trip, but I’ve never liked Hemingway — I was unable to finish it, again.

For Hemingway Friday I chose Maison Martin Margiela Replica Jazz Club (courtesy of a Sephora tester), for the rum and tobacco notes evocative of Cuba. But I couldn’t just leave the house commando in the morning, so I spritzed some Bvlgari Black down my shirt…and later I spritzed some Shalimar (from a tester) on top of that–you know, for science. So I am one boozy, tobacco-y, leathery chica right now! Apropos, no?

Here was my thought process: Hemingway spent time in the Paris salon of Gertrude Stein. Paris, a rose is a rose is a rose… Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau edt. The fact that I’ve been wearing it roughly every other day since I got it for my birthday, and that the guy I’ve been seeing always tells me I smell really good when I wear it, is immaterial. I am participating fully!
