The 2017 fragrance awards season ~ the big winners

Posted by Robin on 2 July 2017 7 Comments

L'Homme Prada

The 2017 fragrance awards season is (mostly) over, and we have a tie: L'Homme Prada and Chanel No. 5 L'Eau. They are not really what you'd call BIG winners, though — both fragrances took 3 awards, making this the year with the least consensus since I started keeping track in 2008 (see below).* Most years I also announce second and third place winners, but for 2017, there's no there there.

(I should note that the winning brand might be Tom Ford Private Blend. Four of the Private Blend fragrances took a combined total of 5 awards this year.)

A quick run down of past winners:

2016: Christian Dior Sauvage, which took 9 awards

2015: Tom Ford Velvet Orchid, with 4 awards.

2014: Giorgio Armani Sì, with 5 awards.

2013: Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb, with 6 awards

2012: Gucci Guilty Pour Homme, with 5 awards

2011: Bleu de Chanel, with 8 awards

2010: Marc Jacobs Lola, with 7 awards

2009: Chloé Eau de Parfum, with 5 awards

2008: Marc Jacobs Daisy, with 7 awards

See also: the Perfume Awards page.

*This is my own (very) unofficial count, mind you, and only includes the award programs and categories I report on — I usually skip awards for things like advertising and packaging, and I generally skip consumer choice awards too. And Basenotes has not yet announced their winners for 2017, so they are not included this year.

See, I really like L’homme Prada. It’s probably not the best they have done, or the most challenging, but I like it. It’s very easy to wear, sometimes you just need that ‘easy pick me up’.

I don’t but a lot of niche perfumes, so there is probably a lot better out there, but for the high street, it’s a winner for me.

L’Homme Prada is a decent fragrance! I do think it’s an odd year though, in that the Prada & Chanel 5 L’Eau are the winners and neither got more than 3 nods. Really it is another way of saying there were no blockbusters in 2016 🙂

I always wonder what criteria they use when ‘judging’ fragrances and deciding who gets an award….

I think a lot of these awards are more ‘from the industry for the industry’. Also, there a lot of awards, I cannot keep them apart, and I dont care 🙂 haha

They are absolutely from the industry for the industry, although they all do consumer choice awards too.

In general I think perfumistas pay much less attention to the awards than they used to, which makes sense.

If you mean the Prada, I’d take it over the other men’s in the list (Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel), but can’t argue that it’s all that + a bag of chips.

But you had Guerlain l’homme ideal edp which is much better. For me, the prada one is in the same field of Sauvage and Bleu
