French orris

Posted by Robin on 25 May 2017 2 Comments

A short film from International Flavors & Fragrances' in-house naturals facility, Laboratoire Monique Rémy, on the French orris harvest. Almost 8 minutes; perfumer Alexis Dadier appears at about the 6:40 mark (do check out his flower pen). If you ever wondered why real iris in perfume costs so much, here is your answer!

That was interesting. Six years is a long time to wait for a crop to produce! Chemistry is fascinating.
The flower pen is a hoot. My dermatologist’s office has flower pens at the front desk to keep them from walking off. I wonder if this is their function here?
Even so, I have some irises that have not been divided in years. I could stick some of those rhizomes up in the attic next to the chimney to stay warm a while and then do some distilling and see what I get….I have been hankering after one of those cute copper stills you see around in the gadget catalogs. Ah, so many things to do, so little time…

I think that as they alluded but didn’t explain, they no longer have to wait as long for the second step. Still, even the 3 years in the ground is a long time!

His pen almost looked like a little “vase” — would love to know!
