Tuesday scent of the day 10/11

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2016 236 Comments

wood tea

Happy Ada Lovelace Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm countering the autumn chill with Serge Lutens Chêne, from Angie's Top 10 of Fall 2011 (among others).

Reminder: on 10/14, wear one of your Top 10 of Fall fragrances. (And I know I need to update the upcoming Friday projects, I promise I'll get that done this weekend.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the "Side-Slice Wood Block: original zisha sculpted teapot design by Lu Wen Xia" is $2,250 at Leona Craig Art.

It’s a beautiful, bright fall day and I’m wearing Lonestar Memories to match my denim dress and red shoes. Outside the windows in the library the trees are red, yellow and green gorgeousness.

I am In Dior Dune. This is one of my top 10 fragrances for Fall. I know it does not have too much love these days, but I wear it regularly during colder days. The amber and vanilla notes of the dry down are very cozy and inviting. It turns powdery on me with a great velvety feeling which I love. It that lasts forever.

I used to love Dune very much – it was nearly my signature scent for about one or two years in the early 90s. Nothing else smells or smelled like it! You smell great.

I tested a bit of Xerjoff Dhajala the other night and it reminded me of Dune. I may be alone in this, though 😉

I love Dune – it was my SOTD yesterday. This is the best time of year for it too – I get much more of the dry-down. You smell fantastic!

I wore MPCPC to bed a few nights ago and my robe still smells fabulous! One of my all time favorite perfumes. Do you have the EDP or EDT? I bought the EDT but now wish I had the EDP.

Greedy person that I am, I own both. I got my 2 bottles quite short after MPCPC was released. My guess is that a lot of people blind bought it, didn’t like it, and sold it on on ebay. So, I got mine for a song.

I also got mine for El Cheapo on eBay- would u recommend blind buying the edt?

Like Cazaubon above I don’t smell a big difference, the EDP is bigger. With Songes, Heure Exquise, Nuit Etoilée and Grand Amour the difference is much more marked, and there I do prefer the EDP. I think I must have bought the EDT first, enjoyed it and then was able to get my mitts on the EDP for next to nothing.

I haven’t been outside yet but the sunshine looks inviting.

Had a busy busy weekend. My toddler was not feeling well..she has a fever. On Saturday I went for a Korean body scrub downtown. They keep scrubbing and scrubbing and my skin felt amazing afterwards. I use to go to a similar place when I lived in SF. Glad I found one here in NY

    Have a good week ahead.

Lovely fall chill this morning so I’m decked out in I Coloniali Mirra e Mirra, bittersweet warmth with just a hint of astringency. I’m so sad that this is long discontinued and I’m almost out: Douce Amere (which I love) is close but it’s just not the same.

Azemour. The golden light was coming in at just the right angle this morning and it was the first thing I thought of.
There is a stomach bug going ’round here. Mom is striken and the husband is looking greenish. Hope I dodge the bullet.

Robin, I just got a rag & bone email that the fragrances are out and the travel coffret is $95 for eight 3.5ml sprays. I have other things to spend my money on but somebody else might want to test the waters.

I was tempted by the travel set until I saw the sizes and decided they are actually reasonably priced for samples, I guess, but I will wait until someone raves about at least one before I shell out. Too much on my wishlist and I really want to cross a few FBs off before things get discontinued or prices skyrocket.

I am infatuated with it and think it will become my Go-To fall frag.
I love it all the through the dry down. FB worthy!

l’ADDM has a lot of power in small dabs. Just a little bit goes very far, so I’m not surprised you got a lot of mileage out of your sample. I am lucky to have a very large decant that has lasted me for years now.

I’m one of those with ‘scent-eating skin’ and generally have to drench myself to get any projection. Not the case with almost every Tauer I’ve worn. A small amount gives off great sillage and lasts hours.

SOTD is Histoire des Parfums “Vidi”. I mostly get cardamom and calone (or similar) from this, which is pushing it squarely into non-essential territory.

Top: cardamom, cucumber and ozonic notes.
    Mid: rose, cyclamen and saffron.
Base: immortelle, musk, amber, vanilla and blonde woods.

Inspired by Kanuka’s description of Musc Nomade ladt week, I decided to finish off my sample. It’s clean and warm at the same time- feels like wearing a white snowsuit.

Love the white snow suit and I will join you in Musc Nomade. I watched a Werner Herzog film about Gertrude Bell the other day (Nicole Kidman in the desert). Beautiful costumes, strangely awkward script at times, great scenery. We don’t have netflix and all that so I still head off to the public library to get DVDs. Life is so adventurous!

Does the scent reind you of her? I’d like to see the film, myself. Though, this scent does remind me of another Herzog film: Happiness: A Year on the Taiga. I loved watching that one.

When I watched the film I couldn’t get beyond an image of Nicole Kidman in a desert fashion shoot but it was pretty enjoyable all the same (James Franco was a bit hopeless with his accent). I think I expected something a bit more ‘visionary’ from Herzog (he usually does great empty landscapes – Taiga, Australian outback, Antarctica) and it was basically just a biopic…but still good. I don’t know who I associate with Musc Nomade…well, not true exactly as I associate it with the distant corners of the NST empire.

It looks very much like my young daughter who is luckily very good at math is completely infatuated with meteorology and watching radar and graphs and maps et. al. on the weather channel and accu weather online. Remnants of Hermes Doblis parfum, exhibit #1 for it’s always the most precious decants that evaporate.

My leather autumn top ten list:

    Knize Ten
    L’AP Dzing!
    Pd’E Cuir Ottoman
    Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur
    PG Cuir Venenum
    SL Daim Blond
    Canoe Goods Skive
    Lanvin Scandal
    SMN Nostalgia
    Chanel Cuir de Russie

    Partial credit options:

    L’AP Traversee du Bosphore
    AG Vetiver
    Pd’E Tabac Tabou

I love Hermes Cuir d’Ange, too, but don’t feel fall is really its season. Doblis should have its own temple in Paris.

What a magnificent teapot! Would that it were reasonably priced.

No perfume on this crisp fall afternoon because I have the most miserable cold, gifted to me by mon chéri (when will I learn not to get near him when he’s sick?). However, I did just come back from a trip to London, where I got to sniff a bunch of things!

We stayed on Regent St, so I dropped by the Penhaligon’s shop to try out the Portraits. I must admit that I quite liked the two male fragrances, though the female ones were pretty meh to me. And I liked the bottles just as much as I expected to in the pictures! Adorable and comfortingly heavy. And then I tried out Vaara because someone on NST compared it to Mohur, and I don’t find them at all similar, but I did find Vaara quite lovely in its own right.

The Jo Malone shop looked a bit too snooty for the likes of me, sadly. I meant to go to the Floris shop, but we ran out of time. On the upside, the hotel toiletries were all Floris branded, which gave me a wonderful opportunity to try out their shower/body products. They were all of very high quality, and I will certainly consider buying their products once I use up part of my huge stock of soap and creams. The room fragrance in the hotel was spectacular! I asked the checkout woman what it was, and she didn’t know, but suggested I ask housekeeping. I didn’t get around to it, but it was such a lovely, spicy, rosy floral that I may write them an e-mail to ask. I expect it’s also a Floris, and would quickly snatch up whatever it was, even though I’ve never before been interested in room fragrances.

I also tried Galop at the airport yesterday, though my very stuffy nose couldn’t make out much besides a warm, sweet citrus. The boyfriend says it smelled lovely on me. Sadly, duty-free at LHR doesn’t give samples, and shockingly, the Hermès boutique doesn’t yet have Galop, so no sample for me to try out once my cold disappears. Those bottles are lovely, though.

So anyway, I’m glad to have gotten in some sniffing in London in between other activities 🙂

It is a very spicy fig with a hint of sweetness. When I smell it, I literally imagine candied ginger, but the ginger has been substituted by fig – sweet and spicy at the same time.
This only comes as attar, so you have to like oil based frags (took me a while to get used to it, as I do prefer spraying). I get good 8-10 hours out of it, and more if I put it on my hair or clothes.
RPP actually specializes on raw materials, but they also have a few fragrances: Preda (also amazing btw), Poisonous Fig, More Beauty than the Beast, Green Velvet. All of them are amazing. They also have the most incredible Rose Musk that comes as attar or EDP – and apparently they used some really high quality rose extract – because it smells divine – which presents a major problem as it is way way way out of my price range. You can actually get them by ml, so don’t have to commit to a large volume. I think Luca Turin reviewed their creations on his blog a couple of months ago.

You smell fabulous! It’s funny — I tend to reach for my other tuberose perfumes (Moon Bloom, Carnal Flower) on warm, sultry days, but think of Fracas as a chilly-weather perfume. Maybe because the chill puts a bit of a lid on its mile-high-sugared-neon hugeness? I love it, though.

Some people mentioned wanting to know more about Tuberose Flash, so I’m giving it another shot this morning. Keep in mind I have a dabber sample, so some facets of the perfume are definitely missing – I have a hard time picking up citrus and floral notes from dabbers (Mohur is a rose scent? are you sure?).

Starts off spicy-fruity in a way that makes me think of like artisanal Play-doh or something? There’s a whisper of camphor that might be my lip balm and might be the tuberose. I’ve had it on for about an hour, which included a brief, brisk bike ride to work and it’s become more spicy. Nothing about it says BWF, though! I think I’m going to get the same dry down I got on Saturday – resin-y, patchouli.

I was not impressed by it as much as I was impressed by Rose Flash or Incense Flash. I got a little bit of flower, but you re right, there is no BWF there at all!! It is not Moon Bloom by any means, but it is fairly reasonably priced – I can see myself using it when MB feels like too much 🙂

One of the Fragrantica reviews suggests it’s a jammy tuberose in the way Rose Flash (where, to its credit, I had no problem identifying the rose) is a jammy rose. I sort of agree, except for the “tuberose” part. Jammy spices for me.

Glad you got more flowers than I did!

Thanks for the description. I have been wondering how it compares to Sotto La Luna Tuberose.

He also did Loretta for his Tableau line and that has quite a bit in common w/ SLL Tuberose to my nose. So I am curious where Tuberose Flash fits into this mix.

I’m trying out Baume du Doge today, and it smells like… so many other perfumes. I’m finding it to be dominated by that ubiquitous Huge Caramelized Wood note that’s almost all I can smell in Coromandel, Ryder, Jaisalmer, Spirit of the Glenn, etc. etc. It isn’t a *bad* smell, but it’s starting to feel like the equivalent of an over-oaked Chardonnay — banal in its bigness and omnipresence. And yes, I’m a bit cranky today. 😉

Sounds like the aroma chemical cashmeran. It’s everywhere! But thanks for commenting as I tried just yesterday to buy a sample of BdD at Surrender to Chance, and they didn’t have it. I just *knew* from the notes that I needed it! 😉

SOTD is Jubilation XXV. I thought it would be colder than it turned out to be today, but I’m still enjoying it – not going sour like rose often does on me. I don’t remember the notes for it, but I’m getting dried rose, nutmeg, wood shavings, and patchouli about 4 hrs into it. A manly, burly rose indeed.

I seem to have picked up the cold my H brought home, so I’m surprised I can smell anything, but I’m quite enjoying Hermes Caleche on one wrist and Dame Leather Man on the other. I’ve not been terribly fond of most scents I’ve tried from Dame, so I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I like his leather.

if you are adventurous you might also want to try Dame’s Citrus Man (which smells amazing on my mother) or Musk Man…..he also has a Chocolate Man , which is odd at first but then has a lovely drydown…..Herb Man is good too but that may veer too masculine for you…

IIRC, I got a decant of this in a mega swap with my scent twin clarissa (so you all know I’m in trouble, right?). As soon as I wore it for the first time, I knew I would need my own bottle. It’s spicy tobacco (without using tobacco) amber vanilla – what’s not to love?

Just saw a good film over the weekend called “Carol”. OMG the clothes, I just loved everything that the character Carol wore (Cate Blanchett was the actress), and I was trying to imagine what fragrance this elegant woman might have worn. She reminds me of my Aunt Nettie, who wore Miss Dior, so maybe that.

I’m wearing Organza Indecence this morning. I wear it, Oro, Safran Troublant, Cinema, and a Guerlain Mimosa Harvest LE as “shoulder season” scents in both fall and spring. This afternoon I’m going to look over my perfume cupboard and see what to put in this Saturday’s swap. My goofs will be somebody else’s treasures! Also, I was getting dressed this morning and for some reason I had the thought that I am so old I remember when Elton John was dating women. I thought it was an odd way to mark time passing and kind of an odd thought to have had in the first place…

I am wearing Chanel No.5 edp and it smells absolutely beautiful. I have several bottles, some vintage, some recent and this one is my favorite, it is a recent (2012) splash bottle and soo wonderful. I find that each bottle that I have is somewhat different. I enjoy any form of No.5 though.
