Tuesday scent of the day 10/4

Posted by Robin on 4 October 2016 240 Comments

Gama-Go Tea Infuser

Happy World Animal Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Hiram Green Dilettante. Tea at the moment is a Ceylon from Tea Bank Estate, via Upton.

Reminder: on 10/7 we're doing "At the movies" — name a favorite movie, and wear a perfume that fits the movie or a character in the movie.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Gama-Go Tea Infuser is $10 at Sur La Table.

Timbuktu, L’Artisan Parfumeur. I suppose this could be what Indiana Jones would smell like after a day investigating incense filled temples (of doom!)…

Oh, I absolutely love it. Dzongkha’s older brother! I love Indiana Jones too, though Temple of Doom is probably my least favourite of the films.

I spent years without having any particular opinion on Timbuktu and suddenly this autumn fell hard for it. And while I cannot immediately think of a film, I did wear it while reading The Timbuktu School for Nomads (the scent is much better than the book).

For a while I thought I didn’t need it because I already had Dzongkha, which I find quite similar. But sometimes nuances count, and I now wear and love them both.

Tuesday and struggling to keep myself awake. I worked until 10pm last night (good 17 working hours) and back to the office today at 5am. Besides coffee, my always faithful companion, I am in Hermes L’Ambre des Marveilles to cheer up. A beautiful ambery, woody fragrance with an amazing citrusy opening note that I enjoy a lot for the time it lasts. This is such a beautiful fragrance but unfortunately is very fleeting on me. No more than 2 hours on skin and around 4 hours if I spray it on my clothes. However, I am always very pleased with it.

Have you ever layered it with another Amber? I have this one as well and do find it to be more of a “sheer” vs “heavy” Amber. Last week I layered it with L’eau D’Ambre Extreme and they went very well together…might give it more staying power.

Thanks ihadanidea. Unfortunately we were ready to submit 50% of a new school design last Friday, but after a long meeting between our director and the lead structural engineer and architect, they came up to the conclusion that the design of the auditorium needed to be revised and that caused tons of problems. We were given just one more week to finish and here we are trying to survive to meet the unnecessary stressful deadline. I am thinking that so much overtime and stress should be rewarded with some perfume shopping. Debating with myself since I have been sitting on my hands lately….

I need some advice, please. One of my co-workers received from her husband, as a birthday present, a bottle of L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube. She suggested him to buy it from the Tiger Lily website, since she has purchased from them before. However, her husband, who pays little to no attention to anything related to perfumery, mixed up the name of the store and got it from Lily Direct. I have never heard of this online store before and neither does her. The question now is if this is a trustable place to buy fragrances. She is concerned that it might be faked and has not opened the bottle yet in case she has to return it. Has anybody had any experience with this store before? Any comments will be really appreciate it.

I seriously doubt anyone is out there making fake bottles of such an obscure scent. Just getting the packaging right would be more expensive an undertaking than seems worth the bother.

I’m using up the last of my Bond No. 9 “Broadway Nite” sample (its fun but I don’t feel any burning need to purchase more).

According to Wikipedia, “Broadway Nights” is “a 1927 American silent romantic drama film directed by Joseph C. Boyle and starring Lois Wilson and Sam Hardy”. That almost counts, right?

    Happy World Animal Day!

Another Katharine character, but this time its Katharine Clifton paying homage to Amelia Earhart in her aviator style. The English Patient is one of my favorite films (and the book is good as well): its got romantic adultery (not condoning).
Katharine is never really understood (even in the book) and didn’t show any remorse in her affair with Almásy.
For Mrs. Clifton, to match her style and mystery: I am going to go with sandalwood: Samsara

        Yes Kip!
He was a romantic too..remember the scene wear he lights Hanna’s way to his hut..and brings her to the church so she can see the frescos on the ceiling..

What would you pick for Mrs. Clifton?

Chanel No.5 L’eau. I also spritzed a teacher at my school whose mom died when she (the teacher) was 18. Her mom had worn Chanel No.5. Tears sprung to her eyes and she said, “Not my mom, but… me? Love?” It felt like Chanel should use that as their marketing slogan. Clearly I had to give her the sample.

I was thinking of you yesterday. I went for a long walk in our botanic gardens and all the tulips were just beginning to open, and there were some beautiful dark, almost aubergine coloured ones …and first I thought Austenfan (Netherlands!) and the Austenfan (Satin Doll!).
What’s your favourite easy to find in a shop tuberose?

      • austenfan says:
        4 October 2016 at 2:31 pm

That’s a tricky one because all the tuberoses I’ve got are sort of niche.
I’m guessing that Satin Doll might be the most difficult to find but I don’t know. Tubéreuse Criminelle is a Bell Jar Lutens, and Goutal’s Tubéreuse is discontinued.
Fracas maybe? Although with Fracas I prefer the extrait and the edp is a lot easier to find.
I’m not being very helpful, am I?

I’m very flattered that tulips remind you of me, although my favourite bulb flowers are daffodils, which I’m kind of obsessed with.

And a walk in the botanical gardens sounds a great treat.

I recommend taking perfumes you love, especially if they’re discontinued and I’d also go for strong (depending on the power and shower situation wherever you end up). Also, don’t forget to write down and have hard copies of phone numbers–I know I don’t memorize numbers anymore with them being in my cell phone

That is one of a few Hermessences I don’t get on with – it reminds me of my grandmother’s bedroom in a William IV house in Dublin that is no longer in the family. This is not a bad memory in any way, but it doesn’t feel right as a scent for me to wear. :^)

    Scentless today! (Sinus headache).

Smelly discovery: I had about 30 minutes to kill last night before a meeting, so I stopped by Belk to do a little sniffing. I had never smelled EL’s Knowing or Cinnabar before, so the poor sales gal had to really dig around for testers! Knowing is soooo good. Took about 2 hours before it settled in and smelled AMAZING! Mmmmmmm

Hurray for World Animal Day. There was a skunk in my neighborhood last night. Perhaps he was on his way to the party.

SotD = Chanel No. 5 parfum, a tiny dab from my sample vial. I’d like to add a bottle of No. 5 parfum (or perhaps one of Les Excusifs) to my dressing table.

Does anyone have a story to share (good or bad, happy or sad) about purchasing Chanel extrait on-line or at a shop, in a new bottle or old, as a gift or a self-indulgence?

    Have a terrific Tuesday, NST!

Today’s film is “Molière”, a French film about the life of the 17th century playwright from 2007 that I caught on Netflix over here. Many comic moments with some poignant parts as various characters learn more about themselves than they cared to know. Plus a bittersweet ending. SOTD to match is “Promenade a Versailles Pour Lui” by Parfums du Château de Versailles. (A slightly tenuous link because in the film there is only 1 scene in the gardens of Versailles; most of it is a flashback to some provincial chateau).

    Top: orange, lime, mandarin orange and jasmine;
    Mid: cyclamen, nutmeg, coriander, violet, sea notes and hyacinth;
Base: amber, patchouli, oakmoss, cedar and musk.

If you can’t get hold of it, don’t worry: you’re not missing much. It’s a floral cologne with little lasting power, a step up from Penhaligon’s offerings but to my nose nothing very memorable. :^)

Skipping down to write–so missed any comments on Robin’s pick for a graphic today. Mine? Errrrrrrr… Robin? Que pasa? 😎

Gave up thinking of films and then matching perfumes to them. Instead I grabbed a perfume I felt like wearing and then tried to figure out a movie pairing. So this is a little weird (not unlike a flesh colored plastic cat with holes drilled into its stomach?)

I’m in Musc Tonkin (thank you Clarissa!) which felt right for this damp morning. Plus my mom brought me back a soft, white, woolen throw from Iceland that I have on our bed and it smells like sheep, in a good way (there is a good way) when you press your nose up to it. Perfect frag? Musc Tonkin of course. The movie that keeps popping into my mind with this fragrance is The Flying Scotsman, the 2006 flick about Graeme Obree. Melancholy, physical, and intimate–its the personal, human, story about someone extraordinary. Also, all the rainy scenes of the Scottish countryside and the damp, wooden row houses… MT is such an intimate scent, so that is the film I thought of.

Yes, sorry I’m late! I have been posting tea things on Tuesdays lately because I need themes or I run out of ideas. And it’s World Animal Day. So, animal + tea gets you a very odd looking silicone tea infuser, that is a very strange shade of orange. In case you need to know, there are also silicone tea infusers shaped like manatees or squirrels or humans or acorns, and there’s a very funny pug dog. And they are shaped like that so they can hang on the side of your cup.

Probably more than you wanted to know 🙂

Actually, this information is great. I was thinking (before I got to the bottom of your post) that it was an interesting pic for World Animal Day, combining an animal and a plastic head theme.
Was delighted to read it was an infuser.. I’ll be looking for them. 😀

SOTD is Femininite du Bois, because perfumelover67 was wearing it and I remembered that I have a tiny bottle. The Serge Luten minis are so cute.

It’s been a long time since I posted – I had a weird curmudgeonly summer in which I didn’t want to wear any of my proper summer fragrances and just wanted cozy scents. However, I found that a dab of Tuscan Leather works great for me in the summer!

I’m glad it’s fall – love the weather and the fall perfumes! I love seeing what everyone is wearing, it is inspiring 🙂 I missed reading the scent of the day …

I have a mana-tea diffuser but I am really a coffee drinker, so I’m going to have to find some other use for it. It DOES make me smile.

Morning, all. I’m wearing plain everything today and it suits my plain mood. As always when life turns a bit mere, I found myself eyeing up my Chanel shelf, and then,of course, reached for Courreges Empreinte. “Logical” is my middle name…anyway, I smell greenly pleasant (or the other way around) and perfectly acceptable, though not at all splendiferous. I can’t think of a particular movie, but I do know this perfume would be worn by a supporting character: the best friend who yearns quietly for the hero and is ever disappointed, or the coffee-buddy who wears sensible shoes and melts quietly away when the real story begins.

Either or both. The perfume is really perfectly nice, just a little..dull. That sounds rather wounding, doesn’t it, to call something dull?

Probably should’ve worn my dilettante decant again, as it is so happy. But I thought I’d give my sample of le labo limette a spin, acquired last week when they had the city ones at Nordstrom’s. It’s doing a little of the happy heavy lifting this grey morning.

I am wearing Voyage by Hiram Green today. This is probably too literal but it makes me think of the movie Titanic. Perhaps the scent worn by Rose’s mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater.

Thanks Foxbins for hosting the split of this scent. Voyage has much better longevity when sprayed rather than dabbed.

SOTD JM Nectarine and Honey. Feeling little bit better, and this is cheering me up – although it feels like it has lost its top notes
Do you guys notice hat JM goes bad pretty quickly? Or is it just me?

Wearing Hiram Green Voyage today from the Splitmeet so graciously hosted by Foxbins…

I am enjoying it….even more so than Dilettante which I wore yesterday…two very different fragrances albeit. These are the first fragrances I’ve worn from this line and they remind me a bit of Tauer’s work…maybe due to use of natural stuff.

Because it’s Donatella Day, I’m wearing Blonde in her honor. In the parfum, it stays pretty close to the skin. A gorgeous tuberose/gardenia and cheap at the discounters. For Friday, I took a look at the movies I liked enough to buy and there seems to be a nautical thread there, or perhaps travel is the broader theme. Thinking hard…

Am testing Narciso EDP Poudrée. I’ve been wanting a bottle of the original EDP for about a year but wanted to try the flanker first to see if it would go into the FB running. I bought a few mfr samples of Poudrée but in the time they took to get to me I found the EDP at a good price, so I pounced.

I’m glad I didn’t wait before deciding. I love Narciso EDP and EDT, but they seemed to have extracted the floral heart from Poudrée, and it wears flat on my skin. Maybe other people have had better experiences, but this is one I don’t love.

How does the EDT differ from the EDP? I have and love Narciso EDP but I’ve never tried the EDT (or the Poudrée).

I hope its OK to answer, since I am not the one being asked. I have and love the EDP. The edt is very similar, but doesn’t seem to have the depth or richness of the EDP. I really wanted them to be different enough to warrant having both, but they are not. I haven’t tried the poudree yet. Also, I believe Robin has a review for both the edt and EDP.

I would concur with lillyjo and add that the EDT is lighter and fresher. I’d also say it’s feminine and pretty where the EDP is womanly and sexy.

They are very, very similar but I find them different enough to warrant bottles of each: I bought the EDT to wear this summer since it’s well-suited to warm weather. I’ll wear the EDP from now until spring as I find it comforting in the cold.

*Also wanted both because I love the bottles and I now have black & white twins 🙂

Hey, y’all, well, today I found out a paper I’d submitted was accepted to a journal (a GOOD journal!) with no requests for revisions. Which is just about the best news you can get in my neck of the woods. So, I pretty much owe myself a bottle of my SOTD Tabac Tabou now, right?

SOTD was Anaïs Anaïs (from a store tester), which I’d never worn before.
It’s mostly gone now, so I will go hunt down something to counteract my end-of-the-MLB-season blues. C’mon, Postseason, you gotta tide me over ’till 2017! …I think this calls for31RC…

SOTD for me is Amouage Honour Woman. I had to put it on very lightly because I was going to Pilates class and they don’t like you to wear fragrances there. Just a wee spray and a hand through the mist. Then when I got home later I drenched myself in it and I still smell Mah-ve-lous! It has a wonderful fresh apple quality to it that I find very cheerful and pretty. (Not sure what note that would be officially. But it’s good in ongoing heat here in Houston.)

I just re-checked the list of notes, and along with the white florals and spices, it lists RHUBARB. Not exactly how I experience the fruity note but must be the source of it–something a bit tangy and “fresh” (but not in an obnoxious way).
