Monday scent of the day 10/3

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2016 191 Comments

Harajuku Lovers G solid perfume

Happy Monday, and a very happy birthday to Gwen Stefani. (And a quick warning: Donatella will be coming by tomorrow.) What fragrance are you wearing?

In Ms. Stefani's honor I am wearing Harajuku Lovers G, from my own personal collection of plastic doll heads. I smell about like you'd expect.

Reminder: on 10/7 we're doing "At the movies" — name a favorite movie, and wear a perfume that fits the movie or a character in the movie

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Happy Birthday Gwen!

When it comes to classic autumnal New York style, nobody pulls it off like Rene Russo as Catherine Banning in The Thomas Crowne Affair. Ms Banning wore many simple yet certainly memorable outfits that withstand the test of time and her confident sexy nature made her character able to keep the mind and heart of Thomas Crown in check. Through out the movie there are many scenes where she could of been wearing many different fragrances, but for me, her classic style reminds me of 31 RC, my SOTD.

She was SO GOOD in that! It’s honestly one of my favourite movies ever, a love story and not one but two dazzling heist scenes.

Me, I’d put her in bright, sharp, no-nonsense Calandre: it matches her pared-down clothing style, I think. She’s quite wealthy so I expect she has a lifetime supply of the 1969-vintage extrait in one-ounce bottles in a fridge in France.

    No 5 Chanel EDP.
Is this the perfume Kathleen Turner smells on her Mother in
    Peggy Sue Got Married?
Or was it My Sin or Arpege?

At any rate, this smells of Aqua Net on my skin. I prefer No22.

When Peggy Sue visits her Grandparents……. pass the tissues! LOL

    Carpe Diem! 😉

I’m glad you are honouring all plastic doll heads today, Robin. I’m wearing Satin Doll, which is a gorgeous iris tuberose that I hadn’t worn in a while. My theme fort this week will be tuberose, of which I have plenty.

I don’t think so. I got my bottle on sale from ALZD. The site lists shops in Switzerland, the UK, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and France. Luckyscent used to carry it in the USA.

Monday again! I am in the office since 5am since we have a deadline on one of our projects at the end of the week. I have had so far four cups of very dark and strong coffee to keep myself functioning. My SOTD is Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois. I really love this scent with its woody, fruity notes. Cinnamon and plums grow very good on me. I know it is very bland compared to the Shiseido version which I used to have, but I still enjoy it for what it is now. Very comforting, inviting, warm and uplifting for the Autumn season.

Oh dear, good luck lasting through the end of the week! I loooooove the modern FdB, and hope one day to be able to compare it to the old Shiseido version. Most people adore the old stuff, but at least one person has told me she prefers the new version.

I’ve never tried the original, either (and I remember when it was launched — if I knew then what I know now…), but I have a full bottle of the newest version and I love it anyway. I think I’ll wear it tomorrow: it feels very autumn to me, all that spicy cedar.

I started enjoying the new version of FdB when I stopped comparing it with the old one and decided to treat it as a different scent. That’s what I usually do with vintage and new versions of fragrances even though sometimes I fail and feel frustrated.

This week’s community project sounds hard. I’ll have to start thinking of something.

I reorganized my samples again this weekend, and have decided that I need to try on each and every one of them before ending a Very Strict No-Buy (that’s right, Donatella, I’m going to adhere to it this time!). I started in on the first row this morning, with Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black (quite a lovely sandalwood scent, though not that interesting or FB-worthy).

At lunch today, we had a Repas des Régions, where each person brought food from their part of the world/France. As an American, I brought platters of chocolate chip cookies and brownies. They appear to have been quite a success, and were consumed with great rapidity. This pleased me, of course. Unfortunately, I absolutely stuffed my face, and have been in substantial pain for the past three hours. I blame my colleagues for bringing so much delicious food!

Got back from my Hampshire/Surrey/London 5 day trip at the end of last week. Popped into Perfumer H in Crawford Street, London – had handcarry luggage only so wasn’t able to buy a bottle of anything – but Caroline in the shop very kindly (after much sniffing on my part) gave me very generous samples of Rain Cloud & Rose Green, so I’m wearing both on different wrists to see how they go. Rain Cloud is absolutely gorgeous, & my husband has declared his liking for it. He’s not keen on Rose Green, but I am, surprisingly – it’s the only rose fragrance other than Penhaligon’s Elizabethan Rose that doesn’t “turn” on my skin. Perfumer H is a lovely shop & a stone’s throw from Marylebone High Street, well worth a visit if you’re in the vicinity.

Does Penahligon’s still make Elizabethan Rose? I read at one point that it is the fragrance they used to bottle for Victoria’s Secret in the late 80s/early 90s that was sold as Her Majesty’s Rose. I wore the VS back in that (pre-Angel) era and searched high & low for a bottle a couple of years ago but came up empty handed.

Penhaligon’s website has had a refurb & there’s no sign of Elizabethan Rose on it – there’s a new rose fragrance included in their latest set of 4 new launches, however.

Most people compare it to Shalimar, but I seem to remember that Emeraude was used as an inspiration for Shalimar. So it makes perfect sense.

And it is gorgeous. When I tried these Muglers in the shop, on paper, my favourite was the chypre, but wearing them on skin, I quickly realised that Oriental Express was my winner. Not enough, so far, to want a bottle, but still.

I love the movie Broadcast News with Holly Hunter and William Hurt. I watched it again this past weekend.

In one scene the news reporter, Jennifer (played by the beautiful Lois Chiles) has a full bedroom she converted into a closet. When they pan around the room, you can see a vanity with perfume bottles on it. I couldn’t read which ones she had on her vanity. I did try, lol! But I imagine her glamorous, stylish, perfectly coiffed character would wear something like EL Private Collection, my SOTD.

I love analyzing movie and TV scenes to try to figure out what fragrance bottles are in view. Even in cartoons: there’s a scene in “Archer” (season 1 episode 4) that takes place in the bathroom of a horrible woman with a lot of money and impeccable taste: she has an indecipherable Chanel bottle which is probably No. 5 EDT, one of the Guerlain beehive bottles, and a wee black bottle of Nombre Noir extrait on the vanity. Such attention to detail!

Whoever animated that scene even put the purple lettering on the Nombre Noir bottle: you can’t quite read it, but there’s no doubt at all what it is, if you know what you’re looking at. Either someone did a lot of research (“What perfumes might a rich, cartoonishly obnoxious but sexy old woman wear?”), or someone is a real scent obsessive. They’d probably be right at home on NST.

Greetings all! Love reading what scents everyone is busting out for fall, which, sadly, has not arrived here yet.

One of my all time favorite movies is “Sling Blade,” but I’m afaid to even contemplate what scent would be a fit for that film. I may have to pass on the community project this week.

Also, I have No Fear of Donatella’s arrival, as I haven’t bought a single thing in a long, long time. Still on the No Buy program until 2017, alas! My grip is tenuous at best, as I’m really wanting a bottle of MFK Grand Soir, but it’s not going anywhere, right? That’s what I keep telling myself????

    Happy Monday!

I am useless at remembering specific films but I managed to rustle together 5 for the week and match them with perfumes, yay! I’m going to do the films based on the era they are set, oldest first. Today, standing for itself and the whole genre of biblical sword-and-sandal epics is “Solomon and Sheba” from 1959, set in the 900s BC (insofar as the hoaky ahistorical story is set in any time). I loved this as a kid, especially the trick with the polished shields used as mirrors to dazzle the onrushing Egyptian army.

SOTD to match is Lubin “Akkad”, a gorgeous resinous amber-incense creation that is lighting up my day and going on my shortlist. [I am being every bit as ahistorical as the film, it turns out – Akkad was abandoned and in ruins by the 900s BC, and its glory days were more than a thousand years before that again].

I’m grumpy this morning and the adorable Mr. Minion is annoying the $&@! out of me so I’m wearing a huge blast of Epic. It makes him sneeze so I’m hoping it will act as a repellent. He is to a slow point in his project and I can’t get two seconds to myself without his either trying to make suggestions, or ask how I’m doing. I really wish I wasn’t such a typical only child but I can’t help needing to be left to myself to be comfortable and focus on my work.

One of my favorite movies is La tigre e la neve (translates to the tiger and the snow I guess) of Roberto Benigni, I can not imagine her wearing any scent in that movie maybe only when she is relaxing in her garden or in the wedding scene, maybe Fracas.

SotD = Library of Flowers Moon Shadow, a very realistic jasmine scent. It smells like the snowy, white jasmine (jasminum grandiflorum) that grows in my neighbor’s garden.

Portia over at APJ loved it so I bought a bottle unsniffed. It is not the pink jasmine (jasminum polyanthum) scent I’ve been searching for, but Moon Shadow is very pretty. It makes me happy.

Library of Flowers scents are packaged in sweet wood and paper presentation boxes, and their bottle is quite pretty. A win for Monday! 🙂

True story: in my early days of prowling ebay, I came across a listing for Guerlain Jicky in the old-style crystal apothecary bottle with the elaborate gold and black escutcheon label. The seller dealt in film and TV props and memorabilia, and the bottle was part of props being sold from the I Love Lucy shows. Imagine Lucille Ball’s character in Jicky!

Morning, all. I’m wafting Queen of the Night in all directions — i just went upstairs to get some milk for a cup of tea, and when I came back down, I could smell my own perfume all through this floor. It’s just as well I love it — let’s hope my Floor 10 compatriots also enjoy it! QotN is a gorgeous, rich non-floral floral, not delicate or peel-wally in its presence at all. It’s rich and lush: vanilla and maybe chocolate and perhaps some well-blended sweet spice…it sounds like a baker’s pantry, but actually, it’s more complex and interesting than a mere foody perfume. Maybe it’s a bit much for work, but too, too, tooooo bad. I bought a bottle a little way back, and at the time, I suffered a tiny pang of guilt because it was stupidly expensive, but now I’m glad I did.

Be well and happy and continue to be gloriously scented, everyone!

SOTD is Habit Rouge. I’m looking forward to Friday’s project; I can’t wait to see what people come up with. I have no idea yet what I’m going to choose …

    Donatella tomorrow? Uh oh.

No SOTD for me at the moment.. I forgot to put anything on before I left the house this morning and didn’t have a backup with me.

When I forget scent for the day, I tell myself I’m clearing the decks for an extra delightful sniffing session later on. Wheeeeee!

Back to the untried sample pile for my SOTD. Today I pulled Soivohle’s Evening Plum parfum oil. It’s very low key and close to the skin.

    SOTD = Papillon Angelique

Mimosa, buttery iris, woody and lightly incensed. I guess this is a chameleon as some claim it’s gourmand but I would never categorize it as such. Because of its low sillage, I think it is very office friendly. I didn’t wear it to match any movie character or actor.

Re this Friday’s community project: the last movie I saw in a theater was Tintin but we’re not limited to movies at the movies so I can probably work with a movie I watched on TV.

In other news…where were all the NYC cops who usually hang around Penn Station / Madison Square Garden? A woman was on her MOPED puttering around the crowded sidewalk with people trying to catch their train and others leaving the station. Utter craziness and I don’t even think it’s a full moon!

My hectic day today required me to wear CdG Kyoto. I have no experience with Japanese temples but it is still so serene.
Friday’s challenge – I feel like a student who has just been asked a really simple question in front of the class, and can only think of anything except for the answer to the question. I am not a film connoisseur, but I’ve seen movies; and every time I think of this challenge I can’t think of a single movie at all.
