Thursday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2016 327 Comments

Mariacarla Boscono for Chanel Prefall 2016

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy National Coffee Day!* What fragrance are you wearing?

Box of Eels for me today.

Reminder: 9/30 will be Still Ticking Friday — wear the perfume in your collection that has been on the market longest (so the perfume with the earliest launch year, that is still in production — not necessarily your oldest bottle).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Mariacarla Boscono for Chanel Prefall 2016.

* PSA if you live near a Wawa: they are giving out free coffee today. Krispy Kreme is upping the ante with free coffee and a free glazed donut. McDonald's and Starbucks are donating proceeds to charity instead. No worries if you miss it all because International Coffee Day is coming up on Saturday!

Ahhhhh! Loved Grand Funk Railroad. I think they were my third album purchase (first was The Monkees, second was Carole King…I had eclectic tastes. ; D). I am always happy to find another friend who knows my music from back in the day.

Also loved Spinal Tap – 11!!

It’s very… coincidental that I decided to make myself coffee this morning to take into work (the low-acid kind I love) and had no clue it was National Coffee Day. My coffee is a mix of two flavors: salted caramel and hazelnut cream.

I’m in Liqueur Charnelle by Huitieme Art Parfums. Really loved this sample and now it’s gone. Definitely a great autumn/winter scent for this rainy morning. OOTD: blue plaid flannel half tucked into skinny jeans with Frye ankle boots – lace up Oxford style.

Do they make low-acid coffee? I would not mind it at all. Or is it just some brands have less acid than others?

The Fresh Market makes their own low-acid coffee. I’ve not seen others, but there might be some out there. That store is less than 10 minutes from my house.

I should have gotten the Vert d’Encens… They also had the Ombré Leather 16 available, and I got a sample of that too. It is all leather to me, nothing special or nuanced at least upon my first wearing of it a few days ago. Will try it again when the weather cools off.

On me this Vert Boheme started off with a lovely blast of galbanum and that sort of symphonic “floral” scent that floral perfumes with no dominant flower have, and then it struggled through an awkward, ozonic stage, and then went completely flat. Vert des Bois, however, stole my heart!

I’m so in doubt… There is a vintage miniature of Guerlain box with Chamade, Mitsouko and Shalimar parfum for sale for €48… Should buy it or not?

That seems fairly pricey for 6ml of parfum to me, but of course you would get those adorable micro-mini bottles too. It might depend on whether you just want it for the juice or you really love the idea of having the collectibles. (For the record, I own one of those vintage Chamade minis, but I think I paid $18 for it. No box, but I didn’t want it for display purposes.)

I have EdT and some 1980s parfum de toilette and this parfum as well as a sample of parfum from a different source… the parfum is rich and a little heavier on the vanillic (very Guerlain!) basenotes.

For comparison, the pdt is more powdery somehow, with a bit more mimosa than ever shows up in the other two.

After Chanel, Guerlain and Patou, I’m wearing a Caron classic today. Pour un homme, which is easily my favourite Caron ( I have only tried a few) and one of my favourite lavenders.

It’s one of my favorites. It’s a touch powdery, but light enough that I wore it in the heat on Summer evenings. If you like ambers, I would think it’s a safe blind buy. I find it super cozy.

The weather is more autumn-like today, so I’m wearing Tom Ford London and continuing to like it a lot. And I’ve just had a Starbucks coffee – they’ve opened a branch next to my work place and as there aren’t many options around here (shocking really, considering all those caffeine-starved civil servants and lobbyists), I’m visiting the place more than I’d like. Some staff members are also super nice to me, making it more difficult to stay away…

Still going backwards in time, wearing 1932’s Tabu. 1932! My version is a lot more recent (about a decade old), but it’s still terrific — powdery and dirty, sweet and spicy in equal measures. If this version is anything like the original, it’s incredibly obvious that 1985-era Obsession owes a huge debt to it (not to mention Youth-Dew, Opium, Cinnabar, and all those other spicy orientals).

The bottle of EDP is about a couple years old and I’m thinking that maybe my vintage extrait is from the ’50’s or 60’s. I noticed that extrait has a little more of an animalic growl to it. The musk seems to be a little different as well.

I’m going to a Tom Cruise happy hour tonight so I wanted to war something super 80s glam. I don’t own anything that immediately comes to mind though, so I went with Oud Paleo, which has a big, fruity, toothsome charm that could eat you alive. Love.

Can’t wait to get some coffee today to celebrate National Coffee Day.

I clearly recall watching Top Gun at the theater and being completely smitten. Now?…not so much but its interesting to see he is still a top box office draw. I’ve never heard of a TC happy hour…what do you expect???

He has never did it for me personally, even when I wasn’t old enough to understand his religious affiliations. I think they’re focusing on drinks and snacks inspired by his 80s movies. Some people might dress up but who knows?

Cuir de Lancome this morning, like a lot of people this week. Had a sniff of Galop yesterday after work. It reminded me of maybe a Le Gallion, but don’t know which one. Its top note was a little…raspy, reminding me of a cat’s tongue. Not a very helpful description, I know.

Also stopped by the Cartier store this – alas, no jewellery purchases for this month – and the SA was both nice and knowledgeable. Her favourite of the Hours was the 13th, which was an interesting and refined leather.

I am wearing Caron Nuit de Noel. This is one of the fragrances usually forgotten all the way in the back of my perfume cabinet. Beautiful, nostalgic, woody, rosy perfume with lots of oakmoss that I really enjoy. It becomes powdery on me with a moderate sillage and projection. I have received a couple of compliments today at work and I wonder why I do not wear it more often.

So, I think it will be Habanita for me tomorrow, circa 1921! Yesterday it was Olympic Orchids Gujarat which smells like lime chutney, flowers and smoke. An immersive and oddly wonderful perfume. Today it is Eris Night Flower with some Unum Lavs around the neck. I was decanting the Lavs from a large sample and there was a tad left in the pipette. Much too lovely to waste.

SOTD is Aeon “001”. This is a strange and attractive beast; it goes on with strong vetiver smelling almost like leather, and then dries down to sweet resins. Someone on Fragrantica thought it reminiscent of Onda and I see the resemblance (to the EDP anyway). Anyway, this is a ‘manly floral’ that has earned the right to call itself so. Although it’s not so manly that a woman wouldn’t enjoy it. :^)

SOTD=Seville a l”Aube. I received a generous decant from a lovely NST’er. I liked it, but thought it was too heavy when I tried it in the hot summer. Today it is just right, and I really love it. It’s orangey and incensey and is lasting on my scent eating skin.

    1) Homemade chicory coffee with steamed almond milk and yes, yes, a cinnamon sugar donut.

    2) In Jo Malone Dark Amber and Ginger Lily. I have come down with sniffles and a cough, and dagl feels very comforting to wear.

    3) Y’ALL: In relation to Robin’s quoted post about the cost of fragrances:
Took a quick spin through Anthropologie last night. Saw a nice green drapey kimono style cardigan made of a cotton -poly blend. Price was a eye watering $388. It was not even lined. Was able to find one in a similar style with similar fabric at $49.99.

Hi there! Wonderful way to start the day at the office ( I usually drink water before leaving on my commute). Today the boss bought these wonderful donuts from a local place (Sesame Donuts).

I found the dupe at ModCloth (there is a IRL store here in PDX) , and get this- fabric was thicker, warmer, with a sort of shibori style check- perfect for layering for fall and winter. They have a special going on, so will jump on it.

Oh, I don’t doubt it, much of the clothing is very fun!
Part of the issue is the pricing for the thing. It was poly/cotton blend and not particularly patterned or lined. Great for putting on to go to the store or the local coffee bar, but not a $400 item. On the other hand, I could get 1-2 DVF dresses, well sewn and made of silk jersey, for that price.
Another issue I think is that Anthropologie in the Pearl District is the ‘model’ store right now for the rest of the chain, and so they have some interesting things that are priced WAY out of the comfort zone of many Portlanders.

You would think clothing manufacturers should be able to find some balance between sensible priced clothing and garment workers being paid a living wage. Love Dark Amber and Ginger Lily. If it came in a travel size it would be my next purchase! Discussed this recently with SA at JM and she graciously gave me a few sample vials to keep me content – for now!
Nice score on the Anthropologie dupe!

Oh, it is such a lovely scent. I think I would get a full bottle- it a more subtle, woody cousin to Black Jade and beautifully easy to wear. Or the body cream or oil, which I would wear as perfume.

The markups sometimes amaze me. There is this start-up, Everlane, which does your basic t-shirts, sweaters (including cashmere), pants, bags – etc. The prices are way way way lower than ‘brands’, the quality is amazing – I bought t-shirts from them 4 years ago, and they still look great after heavy wear and countless machine washing. Their designs are simple – no crazy graphics, etc – so if that works for you, I highly recommend their product. Everything is returnable within a couple of month.

They are great. I only have good things to say about them – and their Pima Cotton tees (which I am impartial to) – cost between 20 and 30 – Rag & Bone charges 90.

Crazy pricing. The Turin column made me laugh though as where I live you can’t really get what I imagine Luca Turin considers a good dinner for two with a bottle of wine for 120 dollars. With no liquor, maybe.

At the very least, Portland OR is still place where a very good dinner with wine, cocktails and dessert can be had for $120- or less- for two people. But price creep is here!

I groaned a little at that too. I totally agree with his point that some perfumes are priced so high just to make the customer feel special and not because they are worth it, but I wish a good dinner for two with a good bottle of wine could be found near me for 120 dollars.

Oudh Infini is the one that most intimidates me, but I am dying to try Issara, Melodie, and the two new fragrances to be released by year end.

really well done. you can tell it’s an extrait. it is sweet, animalic, and funky, which I love. I wish it wasn’t 400 bucks! I haven’t smelled an oud quite like this one. it’s sort of like oud had a threesome with MKK and sweet tobacco. I have samples of the other two as well, the gardenia smelled really well done from first sniff, and Isaara I don’t quite remember what it smelled like on paper, but I’m going to wear it soon.

Thank you for your review, I am almost positive that Oudh Infini and I will not be friends, still working my way through animalics and true oud, but I think I’ll have to try it out all the same 🙂

I am hoping Melodie will be a good replacement for a Sultan Pasha attar I tried, Borneo Gardenia. And let me know what you think of Isaara when you do try it out!

I ordered a sample of Dusita Issara because it was on a list of best men’s fragrances. I wasn’t bowled over, but the price and the fact that it was a dauber vial might have had something to do with that.

Yeah 400 is steep steep steep to me. Fortunately said perfume was a little too fecal for me, so no temptation. I didn’t get all the roses Kafkaesque so beautifully describes, but maybe because I was dabbing. Melodie isn’t my think either and the Issara is way too barbershop for me. But I am looking forward to trying the two new ones.

Do you think that somewhere some graduate student is toiling away on the respective merits and distinctions between National Coffee Day and International Coffee Day?

I’m in Prima T, the 2012 version. It reminds me a lot of Joy–if you love Joy, you will probably like Prima T. When I look up the notes, I am surprised that there isn’t more overlap, so it must be the style. Prima T definitely reminds me of the complex florals of the 30s and 40s. To me, its jasmine is most prominent, and maybe that is also why it reminds me of Joy. Anyway, it is beautiful!

SOTD is Tiziana Terenzi Gold Rose Oudh from a sample. I am quickly becoming obsessed with this one. It starts out sharp but the dry down is really soft and pretty. The rose is really a 3D juicy one. Gorgeous. It’s an extrait, but only lasts about 4 hours.

I swapped away my TT White Fire because the longevity was so poor, and there were two other Terenzis at the same swap. All of us agreed that an extrait should last longer.

Today is my 27th wedding anniversary. My husband is currently out of town, and will be back tomorrow night. I am going to pick him up from the airport, and I will hopefully match the Friday fragrance community project and one that he loves on me.

Every now and then I ask him to pick a perfume he’d like me to wear if we are going out somewhere. He usually picks one of these three: L’Heure Bleu, Cuir de Russie or Alaia. I know two out of these three are old. I’ll have to check the dates to see which one is older.

Today I’m wearing Givenchy Very Irresistible L’Eau en Rose–a very simple scent, which is what I need for today.

I was just looking at that Mercedes Benz fragrance post and wondering if I would ever buy a car scent. I drive a 1998 toyota , interior dog hair and wet dog, muddy tramping boots, no car mats ( sorry, had to mention that), bottles of Bronze Goddess and Poison Girl in the glove box. Women buy cars, right? The only car scent that would tempt me would be called Saga , based on the mustard porsche from the Swedish series The Bridge. Saga wears leather pants so the scent would feature leather. She’s always driving back and forth over the bridge at night or in grey murky weather so maybe a salty note? A bit of industrial wasteland, blood, skank ( she’s into sex)….yeah, no….guess car scents aren’t my thing. Wearing Black Cashmere. There’s a 100ml bottle of it and Fendi theroman for sale on an australian site….can’t do musk again.

Santa Maria Novella makes a cologne called Nostalgia intended to capture the scent of a vintage race car. It’s a weird leather scent that includes vinyl and petroleum and manages to smell very good, whether in spite or because of its weirdness.

I purchased a small sample of this recently as my husband & I ( still sounds more correct than Me) drive in the high performance driving courses (race tracks) as a hobby.
I haven’t tried it yet, I am waiting fo open it at the next driving meet, has anyone tried it?

Anubis for the finally cooler day. I came to the perfume game late and don’t have a lot of older perfumes, so not sure if I’ll participate tomorrow. Also a teach in at work so a somber day that will require perfume restraint. Today I can wallow.

Amouage Myths Woman today! From the wonderful hamamelis 🙂 I appreciate its quality, but think my sample might be better appreciated by someone else. Good thing the swapmeet is coming up! It’s always good to have a few freebies on hand.

I’ve been away for a few days and haven’t quite caught up with myself yet. I haven’t worked out which perfume best fits the Friday theme, but figure that any of the older Guerlains must be on the right track so Vol de Nuit for me today.

Trying Byredo Bal D’Afrique today. This is the first Byredo I’ve sampled. Started out creamy and turned floral. Some part of it is reminding me of the Ombré Rose my mom used to wear in the early 80’s, even though there is no rose listed in the notes…hmm????

I love that outfit and photo! The combo has “Patsy Stone” written all over it (especially since it’s Chanel)!

It’s supposed to be near 90 here today, so I’m in Guerlain AA Nerolia Bianca.

I would love a fragrance with a good coffee note. But not exactly (photo)realism, one that was part of a complex brew.
Today I’m holding off on fragrance as I’m having a terrible allergies morning and we’re going sniffing later this afternoon, so I’d like to go easy on the histamine triggers :-p
Yesterday I stumbled into a store where they had 3 of the libertine fragrances, and I got to try the Sex and Jasmine, which was really quite good, and comes in 15ml size. Not spending money these days, but good to see Canadian and critical darling scents in the wild.

My day went to pot today with the New Jersey Transit train crash in Hoboken. I started the day feeling optimistic that I could knock off a bunch of things from my plate, but no. So the good news is that it is not my train line or station but the bad news is it is for an unknown number of people at work. Without getting into details, I ended up having to facilitate 3 calls (and write the minutes), attending 2 other calls and fielded over a dozen emails, calls and instant messaging about something defective that I couldn’t have done anything about but by association was deemed to be someone who could work miracles to fix it (sounds familiar, this working a miracle bit). Really. at the end of the day, we were lucky that it is isn’t worse. If previous train crashes had not convinced me that the first car is the worst car to be in in the event of an accident, I had just been cured of that skepticism.

Anyway, SOTD = MPG Ambre Precieux

I know I’ll be ODing on ambers as long as the temps are in the coolish range. Did I mentionu I smell pretty darn good.

Tomorrow, I may end up failing the challenge as I got a good size sample of MFK Grand Soir to tide me over while waiting for my decant.

It’s always a bit of a dilemma in the Metro, where I feel it’s safer to be in the car that the driver can see into. I guess I need to figure out the odds of human versus mechanical mayhem.

What a day, but glad it wasn’t even worse. Hope all our NYC/NJ NSTers are OK>

For me, I like to sit in the first car in the mornings because it is the quiet car – no cell phone talking and very/low minimal talking to each other. Coming home I’m almost never in the first car because it is far from a station exit.

Never did get any coffee, so that may explain my disjointed day. My challenge, perfume wise, was to find something I could actually smell through my cold. Wore Santal Blanc, and I’ve managed to get a few whiffs here and there.

Hope all our train commuters are safe, but can I say how much I’m enjoying the revival of the term “mayhem?” So accurately depicts day to day living. 🙂
