Thursday scent of the day 9/22

Posted by Robin on 22 September 2016 185 Comments

Dior Fall 2016

Welcome to fall! (Actually, fall does not start in my area for another hour, so I'm not sobbing just yet.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm seasonally appropriate in Christian Dior Hypnotic Poison, from Annick Menardo.

Reminder: on 9/23, wear a perfume by Annick Menardo, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Menardo week, day 4. Rose Oud by Yves Rocher. Starts as a deep crimson rose, then as the petals unfurl it becomes creamier until finally a bit of that creaminess dries to give the whole thing a fine dusting of sweetened powder. It’s my favourite of the Secrets d’Essences line.

That is one of the better reasonably priced series in perfumery — glad to hear the oud is good too.

I’ve really got to go to Yves Rocher one of these days. There’s one (kind of) near me but I’ve never made it in.

Still hot in Columbus so I’m holding on to summer in Phlur’s Olmsted & Vaux. Hoping for cooler weather soon so I can use my othe sample Hepcat. My favorite thus far.

Guerlain Bois d’Armenie, which I like very much but have never been tempted to a full bottle.

I am drinking a cup of mixed black tea from the ends and odds of a variety of teas. It isn’t bad.

Same here — it’s a darned nice fragrance but I’m not in love with it. Still hoping that some day, Francis Kurkdjian will do a Bois d’Armenie to match his “Year of Armenia” version of Papier d’Armenie, which is one of my favorite smells ever.

SOTD – TF Shanghai Lily. Am traveling home from Michigan to SoCal today. Thought I would get some autumn weather while here, but it was in the 80s yesterday.

SOTD is Parfumerie Générale, “20 L’Eau Guerrière”. It’s one of those featured in a Blooms sample pack for a week of perfumes with juniper notes, which is slightly puzzling as juniper isn’t listed as a note. Fragrantica suggests ‘aldehydes in a union with aloe, sensual musk, accords of Chichona tree bark and olibanum’.

Anyway, it’s fine, a nice Summer incense perfume, but strictly for les guerriers du clavier despite its warlike name. It has middling lasting power at best.

The deal has always been if he doesn’t like it, I won’t wear it. There are too many perfumes out there to wear something he dislikes. That said, there are some that I only put on after he leaves for work, usually because the top notes give him a headache. . .

    2) Am wearing Smoky Poppy body lotion (discontinued, available at discounters for pennies) after showering with the Smoky Poppy body gel. Lovely spicy-sweet resinous stuff on it’s on, and layers beautifully with other oriental-type scents, and affordable besides.

I’m in Penhaligons Elixir, which is very autumnal – boozy woods. Today’s lipstick follows the theme, a muted red by Laura Mercier called Cherrywood. It’s quite chilly here and the leaves have already started to turn, but autumn in this part of the world is a drawn-out affair, so we’re only just getting started…

September equinox has just happened here – well, five minutes ago. I don’t ever look forward to winter approaching, I hate the short days when I go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark. I think I suffer a bit of SAD as my mood seems darker to suit the darker days. Ooh, I sound like a right moaning minnie. The only bit of light on the horizon is that I can break into the third drawer of my dresser where the spice lives! Tomorrow I am gonna bust out Hypnotic Poison and spray lavishly.
Going back to a thread that was discussed here about two weeks ago, somebody mentioned Euro Glamour Zone on ebay and was unsure about ordering, they were confused by the shop name and the seller’s name. I recently received an order from here and I can recommend them, going on my own experience. Scored a little bottle of vintage Magie Noire, and I’m happy happy happy. The seller’s contact is sam_in_barbate, and she’s got lots of vintage stuff.

Well, there’s a mixed bunch that wouldn’t strictly be called spicy, for instance Mahora lives there, and that is classified as a white floral, but there’s oodles of spice going on, and I wouldn’t wear it during summer as it could be a bit cloying. It keeps company with Coco, Euphoria, Aromatics Elixir Parfum (a very well-behaved old gal), Dior Addict, E Coudray Ambre et Vanille (fantastic cinnamon note here), Theo Fennell Scent (we have a complicated relationship), Hypnotic Poison, some vintage Epris (wooh, she’s a hot mama), my recently acquired Magie Noire (another hot mama) and a few more that I can’t think of at the moment. Oh yeah, how could I forget Tocade!

I love spice. Some of my favorites are Comme des Garcons (the first release they did, the edp, there is another with the same name I think) Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Oeillets Rouge, Parfumerie Generale Un Crime Exotique (discontinued but sometimes on ebay), Origins Ginger Essence, Tom Ford Shanghai Lily, and VC&A Lys Carmin.

Like you, I can only think of fall as the beginning of winter. And spring is really just the last few months of drawn-out winter. Summer is the only season I like and in some years it’s very, very short. SAD afflicts just about everyone here, I imagine, and I agree that going to work and coming home in the dark is the depth of misery. So brace ourselves, we must. But it is a better season for perfume 🙂

    SOTD = Bvlgari Black

I doused myself with this and I am loving it. No one has commented which means the cloud is staying close to skin.

If all goes as planned, I will be making a brief reconnaisance visit to the Times Square Arabian Oud boutique on my way to dinner with friends from high school! Actually, they were classmates since kindergarten!

I couldn’t resist going on my lunch break! The staff are really sweet. I tried the oud oils and the one I liked is Mukhalat something-or-other which I may go back for at some point. If you get a chance to smell the incenses, I really liked a couple of those and wish the scent came in an oil. I ended ip with a small “1,000 Flowers” oil which is a sweetish jasmine-y thing. Purdy. Perfume-wise I liked Ghroob. The prices are pretty reasonable.

Happy First Day of Fall! Each new day is now one day closer to next summer, if that’s any consolation to anyone. I’m trying to look on the bright side, ok?
This morning is another rainy, foggy, humid morning. I was drawn to Fille en Aguilles but it didnt match my mood quite right – I’m feeling a little more surly than that. So I am wearing lots of Bvulgari Black.
Everyone at work today is dressed very summery – except me.

I’m having a perfumista moment. So. I was thinking about the Escada I wore yesterday, and religiously when I worked mid-town on the East Side of Manhattan in the 1990s–Margaretha Ley Escada. So I looked up the nose who it turns out is Michel Almairac. The Escada now sits alone towards the back of a wicker shelf as I have used up the two other fragrances that I kept along side it–Bond No. 9’s Fire Island, and Zen by Shiseido (the gold cube). I have not felt compelled to replace either yet, as the Escada (which I wear about 3 times a year) occupies a similar scent personality as the other two. My perfumista moment? Almairac is the nose for all three! Honestly, they have been lined up next to each other on the same shelf for years! I used up the Zen a couple of years ago, and then this year the Fire Island… They do not smell the same–but they fit a similar glamorous white linen suit vibe that can veer into clumpy mascara and sticky lip gloss territory on some days. Unbelievable.

Have we done a Michel Almairac week Robin? His oeuvre is really diverse.

As for my SOTM, I have Nahema from an eBay purchase on one wrist (it had been pitched as “vintage” but we all know that can mean nothing or even spoiled), and “vintage Nahema” from an STC decant I bought about a year ago. My wrists smell exactly the same. Exactly. And neither smells like I remember Nahema smelling the summer of 1993!

SOTD is Alaia. I was too tired to figure out what I felt like wearing this morning as I only had four hours of restless sleep last night. Alaia is a no brainer. After having cooler temps and sunny days last week, the days turned back warm and humid this past weekend and haven’t returned to cooler temps. The days are noticeably shorter. I’ll miss the sunlight more than summer itself.

Actually, all day I kept thinking “where is that nice iris coming from?” and then realized it was LL.

Well, it *feels* very fall-ish, here — a windy cold front came through last night and this morning was crisp and cold, and now it’s warm and golden and the hygrometer that is my curly hair tells me it’s dry, dry, dry. Horrid night — maybe two hours of non-contiguous sleep after going to bed with a migraine, woken every hour by a sobbing baby and then for good at 4 am by an absentee neighbor’s malfunctioning alarm, with headache still lurking. I can barely see, or smile, but I’m wearing Ambre Russe and thus am smiling on the inside.

I am rockin’ with Robin today in Hypnotic Poison. Such a winderful perfume. I tried Pure Poison yesterday and liked that too. They had Opium on sale at the chemists so I gave it a spray and honestly didn’t see any resemblance to my ( memories of 1980s) Opium. The versionI tried yesterday seemed very diluted witha thin citrus opening. Maybe it’s just me not getting it. Lucky that my recent formulations of Loulou and Coco still smell gooooood.
So, it must be spring here! And Friday! And the last day of the school term! Hurray.

Am in Iris Ukiyoé, a perfect fit for a fall day that started out crisp and sunny and is getting warmer by the hour (not at all typical of Autumn here; wind and rain storms and flooding are just around the corner.)

I find this scent quite satisfying but the downside is that I have to drench myself in it to get it to show up and this morning’s wearing finished off my sample. Is there anything I should seek out with a similar silvery / carrot-y / cool iris note?

Have been assured that our apartment will be move-in ready Saturday, so I’ll be able to participate in next week’s project. Maybe I’ll do a chronological order line-up, beginning in 1870 and landing post-WWII by the end of the week…

I’m a fan of Iris Ukiyoe; I probably get complimented on it more than any other scent I wear. Really soft and just pleasant.

That said, I actually like Hermes Hiris even more. Otherwise maybe Honore des Pres I Love Les Carottes would suit you? I’ve not tried it but I hear great things. Olivia Giacobetti actually makes both and, in my view, you can’t go wrong with her.

Sorry, I should say that Olivia Giacobetti created both not makes both.

I have the same problem with Hiris that I do with Iris Ukiyoé – I have to drench myself in it for it to show up. I’ll put the Les Carottes on my list – it might be just the thing!

I love Iris Ukiyoe, too. Definitely agree with mjane3 about Hiris.

And there’s always the easy iris in Prada Infusion d’Iris. I like the EdP and the absolue. The EdT is popular too.

Prada Purple Rain has a very nice iris note, too.

SOTD = Lancome La Collection Climat. A perfect match for a gorgeous first day of fall. Why did I wait so long to open my little bottle and try this???

Oh, Fall. This year has been…something else. 2016 will go down in history for Something! No doubt about it.

Ok, that’s off me chest, vague statement as it is.

Wearing a quick spray of Burberry Brit Sheer (always lovely & fresh) for my annual wellness exam, then swung by Kheils and liberally applied their New Musk Oil on both wrists. Will get this one someday- rollarball will be plenty. Feels like i just got out of the shower, all clean human skin. (Doesn’t hurt that i did shower this morning before my appointment!!)
