Wednesday scent of the day 9/21

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2016 232 Comments

peace

Happy Hump Day, and happy International Day of Peace! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Lolita Lempicka Le Premier Parfum, from Annick Menardo.

Reminder: on 9/23, wear a perfume by Annick Menardo, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

That sounds nice. I haven’t seen 4711 in any flavor for so long. I remember when it was available in every small-town department store. Ready to wear cool weather scents but will probably be joining you in something refreshing.
It is hot! I’ve been filling the birdbath four times a day because I feel sorry for the hordes of overheated grackles migrating through.

Grackles are eating all my birdseed. I don’t begrudge them food but the cardinals and other regulars can’t get near the feeder. They wipe it out daily as they come through. They are like locust overwhelming the general population.

I’m not a huge fan of the grackle, especially pecking the grapefruit crop to use the oils as pomade, but they are pretty and can’t help being a blasted nuisance. They’re doing a nice job of removing the plague of cutworms from my garden right now, and eating the cat food that has been refused in our house, so I’m cutting them a break.

It rains without stopping where I live. The scent of the day is Comme des Garcons 2. This was one of the first perfumes I remember that smelled different from everything I wore before, and I liked it a lot, but, being a poor teenager, I couldn’t afford it. Sometimes I would spray myself with it in a shop, if there were samples. When I was finally was able to buy it, I went for the biggest bottle there was, and I’m on my second right now.

      You smell spice-and-floral fabulous.

I have to hold the Comme des Garcons bottle whenever I see a tester. That thoughtfully off-center sprayer makes the bottle feel just right in the hand.

After seeing a comment about roses yesterday, I’m in the last of my Ta’if sample. I finished off the vial, but it was a spray one that had gotten a little clogged and was very difficult to get out. Yet another reason to use up those samples before the vials go wonky and don’t work anymore.

I’m on a self-imposed no-buy for decants. I’ve got to use up everything (or most of what) I have before it evaporates. And some of those little vials seem intent on disappearing when I’m not looking. Naughty! 🙂

SOTD is Guerlain Rose Barbare. I know this is supposed to be a “dark” fragrance, but I think it actually smells warm and happy – bright juicy rose, warm patchouli and spices. Smells like sunshine in a window to me. It is likely the very last of our warm summery weather, so I wanted to celebrate our stretch of remarkably good weather.

YSL Body Kouros. A near cousin to LL au Masculin, though drier and with a eucalyptus not among other differences. My bottle is twelve or more years old.

No tea yet–perusing my work cupboard and deciding.

Ha! I have an alarming large bottle of Odalisque, which my husband talked me into buying, not yet understanding it isn’t really a ‘deal’ when you have massive amounts of perfume as I now do. Meanwhile, I wear it rarely as even though I am 53 I feel too immature for it most of the time. It’s beautiful though, so perhaps I’ll be able to douse myself in it when I truly grow up.

Greetings, my dear scented friends! It has not stopped raining for 3 days now and Chanel No 19 just seems made for a rainy day. Copious spraying employed, at least ten squirts. Been battling depression all summer, as many of us do, it has been an extended dance with the dark this go around. Despite this, I got a bonsai tree accepted to a national juried show and off to the 5th National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, New York I went! My exposed root Virginia Creeper amongst all the junipers and pines was quite a sight to see.

      1) I understand the depression- my tough year just came in a tsunami. By entering the competition you are giving yourself a way to reconnect in the world, and resurface from the destructive wave that depression brings.

      2) Chanel 19 really does seem to cut through the gray, doesn’t it.

      3) Virtual hug.

Rochester is my hometown and often cloudy, hope you encountered nice weather while there. Ironically, as Rochester is the Lilac City, I saw in Raleigh this summer a bonsai lilac tree (shrub). Beautiful. I take it the lilac and creeper are both pretty rare in bonsai.

Parfums Quartana Mandrake. I sprayed this on in the store and I thought it had more going on and good longevity, but dabbed, it’s almost gone already. Not quite a fruity sugar-bomb, since it’s not overly sweet, but the opening is a tart melange of rhubarb, green apple, and pomegranate.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1) SOTD is Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, from a undiscovered sample I found while unpacking a small bathroom box! I needed the citrus and herbally pickup this morning!

    2) In desperate need of coffee- I am about to shout to internal support, and need the clarity that coffee can bring to a morning.

    3) ALSO: Got to try the Charlotte Tilsbury ‘Scent of a Dream” Fleurotic Scent at Nordstrom’s (Portland). I was expecting sparkles, swooning handsome men, and warm sunshine. I was expecting to speak in an Austin Powers accent: “Do you think I’m sexy? DO YOU?” I was expecting sexy boho chic!

Instead, what I got was a kinda citrus-y chypre with a warmish woody grounding and a sort of salt/musk skin scent thing. The ISO-E, citrus and tuberose seem to dominate- you don’t get a sense of the spicy oils that Tilsbury apparently mixes. It’s stays for a good while -4+ hours on my wrist and inner elbow.

I don’t know guys, it’s a hundred dollars, it’s kinda pretty but that’s real money. A rollerball of Stash is $25 and will last a good while, and seems more chill than SOAD.

Honestly- I hate to admit it- but the Tom Ford Noir pour Femme really seems to be a sort of man bait- my godsons love it and stay for hugs and cuddles longer, and I have had dates where the guys really seem to like the fragrance, and I have been in stores where guys have followed me to ask about the fragrance so they can buy it (for themselves?). This seriously threatens to take over as my fall/winter scent.

Ah! I have to get over there and get opinions.

I mean- even the bottle is a disappointment- IT”S PLASTIC. For the price, I can buy 2-3 of mini girly chypre-type Tocca fragrances, packaged in solid beautiful glass bottles that can be refilled or re-used. And in fact, for a woman who is 10 years younger than me, who wants a girly sexy chypre, I would recommend Cleopatra from Tocca.

Happy last day of summer, everyone! The huge, old mission fig tree next door (that’s original to *our* 100-year-old house, prior to the lot being subdivided) has been sending out huge, creamy, greeny wafts, so there was nothing to do today but put on an abundance of Philosykos.

I adore the scent of fig tree in the sun. Wish I enjoyed wearing it on my person but it’s an ambient scent to me. I just realized we haven’t planted a fig here and I should have. They’re easy to root from cuttings (i.e. free) and unlikely to be ripped out by the next tenants as a weed even if they’re not gardeners.

My dad recently sent me a link to a fascinating article in the New Yorker about the tremendous importance of fig trees — the Ficus genus in general — to the world’s ecosystems. I had no idea!

There is a fig tree down the block, absolutely bursting with ripe golden green figs. I think dinner will be figs with goat cheese and bread and the last rose of the season.

Really? That’s interesting. Some women I think over spray so it will stay throughout the day. Early morning commutes can be deadly on the subway, or absolutely wonderful depending on what’s being worn.

I’m not encounterong over spraying I don’t think. Just wafts here and there, especially among younger women. It’s all pleasant – so far. I am wondering if more people are wearing perfume or if it’s just that as I get more interested I notice more. I do remember what to me were horrors of oversprayed men and women in the 80s.

Iris and one of you’re favourites, I’m bound to love this one!
I’m going to Rome for a 3 day trip, and am adding it to my ‘Perfume to sniff’ list. There are still so many L’Artisan’s I haven’t tried and sound so interesting, the two I have tried have both been instant love for me. Hopefully I will find a perfume boutique with a good variety, and of course some Italian brands too.

Thanks, Canadians, and Merci, les Canadiens.

Fou d’Absinthe for me today. I find this one to be very adaptable through the seasons. Today I’m getting an incense vibe from it.

I had a pretty dumb perfume moment the other day. Lush has brought back Lord of Misrule shower gel for Halloween so I popped into my local store pick up a bottle. While waiting in line I sprayed some Dear John body spray on my arm. I took a sniff and it didn’t make much of an impression on me. A few minutes later as I left the shop I took another sniff. This time I was entranced. It had developed into a beautiful vetiver scent, toasty and sweet. I made a u-turn back into the shop and purchased a bottle.

Later that day, after showering, I drenched myself in the stuff and then waited for that intoxicating aroma to return. It never did. After a bit of puzzling I remembered I had been wearing Vetiver Tonka that day. Whoops.

I’ll probably just return Dear John. Lush is pretty forgiving that way. On its own Dear John smells a bit flat to me. It has a sort of indistinct smoky smell. I had expected it to smell like Lush’s Copperhead Shampoo bar which has a really pleasant vetiver coffee scent with a bit of sweetness to it.

I love the Copperhead Shampoo. It’s more expensive than the regular shampoo bars. I did not know this and neither did the SA so when I went to pay, it was more than what I calculated in my head. I insisted that I should get it at the lower price that the SA quoted and seeing that the checkout line was getting longer and I was not going to back down without the manager explaining the store’s business practices, the cashier reluctantly refunded the difference.

Not wearing perfume this AM, yet. But last night I took a stroll down memory lane and wore Escada’s Margaretha Ley to an event at my son’s school. I applied with a light hand, and it was plenty. Kind of embarrassing to think I used to spray with abandon before work in the 1990s! All of my scarves and sweaters were laden with its hyacinth.

I so vividly remember the Giorgio era. I was in middle school and before it came out there were all kinds of scents my friends were wearing that I loved to smell on them and envied. Then Giorgio came on the scene and it was all you could smell, anywhere, any time. Both because so many girls wore it (though I suspect most were in knock-offs) and because it drowned out every earthly scent in its wake.

    Wearing Coco Noir today…

Got a bottle on eBay w/ a 2012 batch code which I am enjoying. Some reviews complained about reformulation after it came out so I was sure to get one of the earlier vintages. 😉

There were, of course, high expectations for this one and I think as a result some disappointment.

I am debating shelling out for Parfum of this one too or the body creme…someone mentioned the body creme is the way to go.

No scent yet. Just got my sampler set from Jolie Laide so will have to decide which to try. They’re natural botanicals, so my assumption is staying power won’t be great. But, I got a sweet, handwritten thank you note from the perfumer with my order. I need to write her back to tell her my husband has seen all the nouvelle vague movies after which her scents are named. He’ll have fun sniffing them to see how well he thinks the movie matches the scent….

SOTM is 31 Rue Cambon. Today is the first time it hasn’t gone sour on me, and I see why so many love it … but it gives me that “I’m playing dress-up” sensation. It would be the perfect scent if I were going to be attending a black-tie soirée…in a black velvet gown, long triple pearl strands and long black gloves … with James Bond. Preferably the Roger Moore version. 🙂

I wouldn’t mind getting in on Vanille 44 but I don’t frequent Basenotes other than reading reviews. Is there a special area where splits are posted?

Wearing Black Jade today. Well I was. It didn’t last long on my scent eating skin. I’ll be shuffling through my desk shortly looking for another scent to top off. Why do perfumers makes scents that don’t last but yet feel free to charge top dollar?

I’m seeing my perfume-averse friend this evening, but I can’t skip a day of Menardo week. I started the day in a little spritz of Lolita Lempicka EDT, a sample I haven’t given enough time to, anyway, and will wash it off later if it persists post 5…

I read anewspaper article a while back that just as married couoles can divorce each other, one can divorce a friend. I am not suggesting you do this but to the extent a friendship becomes one-sided and you feel like you’re doing all the work to keep up the friendship, you should consider that option. Also, divorcing friends can just take the form of benign neglect. P.S. I’m really a nice person 😉

I love JdB! It was my first Guerlain love back in the 80s when I was a teen. I couldn’t get a bottle, so I was able to afford the dusting powder and I wore it for my prom. So pretty. I still wear it from time to time and it always takes me back. You smell lovely!

What a great scent memory! I bet you were the most sophisticated-smelling person at your prom. ???? I hadn’t actually smelled it before, but I was pretty sure I’d like it based on the notes…and the fact that it’s Guerlain.

I hadn’t either, and I’m not sure I’ve even seen it before. I’m guessing it’s not widely available at counters because it’s an older scent but not quite as ‘classic’ as Shalimar. I’ve only worn it today, but I like it! It’s a 1980s BWF with prominent tuberose. In terms of comparison, I’d say it’s less buttery and heady than Fracas, and I think it’s also more wearable for spring and summer.

Did you try the For Him? I have a sample of both and like the For Her best when I spray it liberally as that seems to bring out the creamier chestnut and diminish the strange peachy smell. It might re-grow on you?

Yes I tried This is him!I must confess this was done all at once,on my skin on different places, while wearing the stunning Eloge du Traitre.I’m a baaaad test subject.I tested both new Prada’s,Coach’s wonderful new frag(which really stood out and I still regret not buying it!),the two Zadigs,Armani Profumo,Orchid Soleil,Neroli Portofino Aqua…It all became muddled and confusing lol!I did respritz This is her! last night,My conclusion is it’s better suited in cooler weather than the stifling heat during the day. That strange peachy smell is actually mesmerizing.X

I was planning to check out more Annick Menardo perfumes and do a Cartier week this week and a Salvatore Ferragamo ( or similar ) the following week by working my way through my off-site storage but I haven’t been out very much so I will wear Hypnotic Poison again. Really, I should do a Poison Week as they are all available. Really enjoyed reading reviews of Miller Harris perfumes yesterday following a number of posts. Many of them sounded wonderful but is the Jane Birkin one ( forget the exact name, scent of rien) discontinued as I coukdn’t see it on the sites. Any other favourites fromthat range?
Wonderful dawn chorus here…it was like someone had filled a giant stadium with birds, all calling and cheering. Best I have ever heard .

L’Air de Ríen isn’t, as far as I know, discontinued but they do limit the distribution very strictly (they officially cite shipping restrictions but wouldn’t sell to my MIL when she mentioned she was bringing it back to the US for me). I ended up with a very slightly used bottle from eBay and it was worth every penny.

That’s just wrong! Once I buy something, I should be free to do what I wish to do with it! Would the answer be different if she was gifting it to someone in Canada or the U.K. or Japan?

Her non-purchase actually happened at Harrods and I was informed later that the SA misunderstood the policy and that they (Miller Harris) don’t allow more than one bottle in case of plans for reselling. I’m still suspicious of the experience and a bit huffy about it. I guess I should give them the benefit of the doubt, but I hate not to warn people that there could be a problem purchasing if they mention plans to export.

Posting late today, I slept in after a long evening out hearing a favorite singer, Taylor John Williams. This morning was a Tauer toss-up between Maroc pour Elle and Une Rose Chypree, and Chypree won. (It must be all the rose talk the past few days!) But tonight is my first night attending Drag Queen Bingo so I’ll probably wear Maroc for that–it seems like it might be a good scent for the sparkles and dramatic eyeshadow I’m anticipating. Or maybe Bombay Bling…

I went to drag queen bingo once when I lived in LA and actually won a round! (I never win anything!) I don’t remember what I won except that it was given to me by Jeffrey Tambor, who was hosting that night (not in drag, I might add.) I am a huge fan of his work, so that was a thrill 🙂

I’m wearing Shalimar today. I know its a heavy hitter, but its a comfort scent for me.

Plus, its keeping the feeling of being in France alive. Last week this time, I was having dinner in Cannes overlooking the coast. Its still seems like a dream that we were there. The trip went by too fast! As all trips usually do…

Yes! It’s dreamy – even dreamier and better to sleep in is the extrait. A mini bottle of it came with my full sized EDP or EDT, whichever it is (from fragrancenet.)

Your trip sounds like it was wonderful. Hope those moments remain alive as long as possible!

Hi-dee-ho, NST, you’re all smelling amazing today.

Scents of the day are samples of Prada Purple Rain and Infusion d’Amande.

Purple Rain smells silver-grey to me with a good iris aroma and that’s about it.

Infusion d’Amande does smell purple with its heliotrope over delicate almond. I like it very much.

Heliotrope does have a very purple aura, doesn’t it? It could just be because the flowers are purple so I’m unconsciously making the association, but most of the heliotrope-forward fragrances I have I’d classify as purple.

I’d call it a fresh rose, as opposed to a jammy or dark rose. I would personally not recommend a blind buy on this. Definitely something that should be sampled first, IMO.

Wafting around in the gorgeous Ginestet Botrytis. I need a FB of this.

Tea of the day is a mystery tea I found in my mother’s kitchen cupboard. I found a little tin marked “Chinese Tea” with types of loose teas in little pouches. The writing on them is in Chinese (presumably) so I have no idea what any of them are. I chose one that looks and smells an oolong but has the most startling salty flavor. It is also PACKED with caffeine so I’ll just be having the one cup.

I’m finally back to drinking tea after a 6-month hiatus (while following a low-histamine diet.) YAY! I don’t have access to my teas while I’m out of my apartment but have a big sampler of jasmines from Upton arriving tomorrow. Excitement!

If anyone else is interested, Sephora is offering a freebie with $25 online orders that includes samples of Angel Muse, Orchid Soleil and Nirvanas Rose and Bourbon (amongst others.) I’ll order mine up once I hear back from my apartment manager re: moving back to our apartment so I know where to have it shipped. Code is “intheair”
