Friday scent of the day 9/16

Posted by Robin on 16 September 2016 320 Comments

harvest-moon-0s

It's Harvest Moon Friday! Tonight there will be a full moon with a penumbral eclipse. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a nut or grain / cereal note. If you don't have one, you could think of another note associated with the fall harvest season — apple? hay?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Ego Facto Poopoo Pidoo, which smells like rice powder and almonds and marshmallow.

Reminder: on 9/23, wear a perfume by Annick Menardo, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Mechant Loup by L’Artisan today. Given its list of notes, its surprisingly dry and almost bitter. I like it.

I got the origami set, which £ for ml is pretty good value, plus you get just about all the scents. There’s one for Parfumerie Générale and another for Pierre Guillaume Collection Croisière and Huitième Art.

I was looking at the PG Origami Coffret. Are you enjoying yours? It is a good value until shipping to the US comes into play. But there are multiple scents from the line I want to try so it might end up being a better deal than buying individual decants.

I hope you feel better soon. Mitsouko is tricky. Out of the blue I wanted to wear it last weekend on one of our first crisp fall days. It was perfect last Sunday, but I just never know when I’m going to be in the mood for it. If I’m not feeling it, Mitsouko can wrestle me to the ground.

“Spirit of the Glen” by D.S. & Durga. This one has a malted barley note over a just-sweet-enough vanilla base, with other notes of camomile and hay. It’s a warm, cozy scent which is accompanying me nicely through the day – getting slightly boozy as time goes by and the white wine base note comes through. But it’s not a boozy fragrance per se; I went to school near a malt store and it’s the sweet/sour smell of sprouting grain here, turned into something appetising and Autumnal by the perfumer’s art.

I may well get this one, although I might re-test first against Rudis, Les Jeux sont faits and A kiss by the fireside to be sure it’s not too close to any of the others.

I like this one a lot, though my initial impression was that it was a bit sweet for my tastes — I’m ever on the prowl for the ideal whiskey comfort scent, but often find them too heavy on the caramelly-vanillic notes. I’ll have to revisit my sample.

Have you tried 4160 Tuesdays’ “A Kiss by the Fireside”? (They do a very reasonable sample programme BTW). Although I think it may be sweeter than Spirit of the Glen, and it has a smokiness that I love but others may not. :^)

Unseasonably warm in Glasgow for my visit (arrived yesterday, going home to Aberdeen tomorrow); am currently smelling a tad confused! Almost finished my Snowdrop & Crystal Flowers before I left the hotel this morning, then visited Frasers (department store) which wasn’t that great the last few times I’ve popped in, but is now stocking some interesting fragrances. So back of left hand is sporting Martin Margiela ‘untitled’ edp, on back of right hand is his ‘Replica/Promenade in the Gardens’ & further up left arm is Atkinson’s ‘Posh On The Green’, hence the confusion mentioned earlier! Initially I loved the Atkinson’s, & years ago I thought I would one day buy the ‘untitled’, but now I get rotting garden matter on first sniff, so I bought the ‘Promenade in the Gardens’. I may have to shower before going to the Jimmy Webb gig this evening…

It was Sephora on 86th new Lex that had a bottle out. Only place I noticed it, but that might have been because the selection at that store is tiny, as is the store itself (compared to others.)

Just average compared to my love of the pepper bomb Oscar for men and the carnation notes of Pour Lui. I think it will grow on me.

On a side note so happy the designers from Monse will be creative directors of the house. Great collection from Monse this season. ????

    1) SOTD: Crabtree and Evelyn almond body lotion, layered with Tom Ford Black Orchid. Very warm and earthy and sexy, and the almond/hazelnut/truffle notes are playing together beautifully together.

    2) Homemade Cafe Du Monde coffee with almond milk and a hot biscuit with plenty of honey. Perfect.

I just noticed today that one can get almond milk at Starbucks (I know it’s a sin to mention this where you live). I asked a barista if it was sweetened or unsweetened and one of them just gave me an eeeew look and the other said unsweetened. I shall try it next time I’m using my stars for a freebie!

I thought of one my perfumes that might work for today: Ambre Narguilé. Tobacco and spice. Sort of harvest-ular. What I am craving, however, is Beige–which I do not have. My sweater is scented with it from a sample I had a while back. For now I’m skipping Hermes in favor of my sweater.

Am in Hermès Ambre Narguilé, which to me is the quintessential fall perfume: dried fruit, spices, tobacco. I was getting wafts of mulled cider when I first put it on.

Got a sample of Ginestet Botrytis in the mail yesterday which I wore for the day and reapplied before bed. Love! I’d stopped buying samples for a while but had accumulated a long list of fall/winter perfumes to try, mostly culled from comments here. I’ve only tried a handful but already a few are FB worthy (the aforementioned Botrytis, PdN Ambre Cashmere Intense, ELdO Bijou Romantique) – a much higher batting average than usual. Enabler pins all around!

I wanted to stop the samples until I went through them all, but for the same reason you cited, I haven’t been able to. Even as I read today, there are so many adored fragrances that I haven’t tried/ heard of. I have found some in my newer sample acquisitions that go on the FB list. With the holidays coming, there will hopefully be gift lists, gift cards, etc., so that a new bottle will be practically free by perfumista logic!

I can’t imagine how this smells, or that it’s pleasant. What’s it like? Most rye breads have a distinctly sour note that I’m not sure I’d want on my skin but maybe they left that out and focused on caraway or some other aspect?

A couple of months ago I made an almond panna cotta that infused my house with a lovely almond fragrance that lasted for hours. My SOTD is SL Louvre, which is close, but a little too sweet for me. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Miller Harris La Pluie, which has a wheat note. I don’t really smell it, and La Pluie is more tropical rain than autumn harvest, but it is lovely. I had a sample of Zadig & Voltaire, This is her! with a chestnut note, but smelling it on paper put me off it, I think it is the ‘cashmere wood’ whatever that is, that I find very sharp and unpleasant.

TGIF…my little one (3 year old) started preschool this week…oh the feels! 😉

Wearing vintage Hypnotic Poison today which has a nutty accord per Fragrantica…

This is good stuff. I haven’t warn it in a while and it seems lighter than I remember. I put sunscreen on beforehand though and am sniffing my forearms where I sprayed…sunscreen seems to mess w/ many fragrances and this may be one of them.

In Jardin en Mediterranee today. Oakland Fresca, I sympathize with your tired brain. I had to really rake through Fragrantica to find a nut fragrance I even had a sample of: it says this has a pistachio note. Who knew? Not me.

With all the talk of harvest time (despite the heat here) I’m recalling trips to Mercey Hot Springs in central CA. Heading home we’d always stop at the nut farmers’ roadside tents and stock up.

SOTD is Vanille Absolument by L’Artisan. I don’t think there’s a grain note in there, but it is very fall-like to me. I’m just so happy that the weather is cooperating. It even feels a little like early autumn, in which SoCal is an absolute rarity this time of year!

It’s interesting. It’s a white floral with green almond and vanilla. Like the other ES scents, it’s by Francis Kurkdjian, so it has his signature orange blossom. Mine is a manufacturer’s sample, and until today I’d only sniffed it on paper. There’s something in it that doesn’t work for me that I couldn’t identify and couldn’t understand because I like orange blossom. I think I solved the mystery by looking at Basenotes, which lists magnolia as a note too, whereas Fragrantica doesn’t. That smells right (and would explain it since I don’t particularly like magnolia). But you should sniff it sometime and see what you think–particularly since it leans a bit gourmand when the vanilla shows up.

i am wearing Epice Marine ( sesame, cardamon, cinnamon…) from a travel sample given to me by Waterdragon. I read Waterdragon’s post yesterday and was so moved by her generosity…and here I am enjoying this fabulous scent thanks to her. It’s actually spring here. The magnolias are incredible, the pollen drifts are magical, the kanuka is following ( it has tiny white snow-drop like flowers). My box of essential oils arrived in yesterday’s mail so I will try and make my Signal Hill walk perfume; pine, manuka, kanuka, lemon. I really need to know what oils give off a leather scent as that is how bracken smells ( blended with dusty leanut and fern). I don’t want my scent to be too fresh and piney but dusty and dry and leathery too. I think I might add sandalwood?

I’m planning on treating myself to Chocolate Man for my birthday in a few months. In addition to Jeffrey, my favorite mystery writer has visited recently, and my favorite dulcimer player that I usually have to travel to the edges of Appalachia to see will also surprisingly be appearing in the Chicago area in a few weeks. It’s a rarity for any of these to be here, but, all three in a month’s time? I have certainly hit the trifecta this month!

It’s sweet – and has additional notes of honey and caramel and a hint of dark chocolate – but like hajusuuri I have a high tolerance for sweet so I don’t find it overly so. It is, however, definitely a cool weather scent for me, and today was a tad too warm for it. Fragrantica reviewers compare it to Angel, and as it dries down I can smell the resemblance, but minus the patchouli.

No perfume for me yet, I’ll be spending part of my Saturday being pampered – I’ve booked in for a Guerlain facial at our local department store. It’s been about a year since I did that, so looking forward to it.

Was going to wear Fils de Dieu, but the weather turned surprisingly cool yesterday and has continued so today. Anyway, I couldn’t wait to try AG Sables, courtesy of the fabulous Hajusuuri, so that’s what I’m wafting today!

Hey FearsMice! What do you think? I spilled some on my hand when I was decanting and I walked around wafting spicy burnt sugar (in a good way). I’m almost positive that my bottle came from sweetgrass so thank you sweetgrass!

My tolerance/liking for sweet has grown tremendously over the last couple of years, so I wasn’t as shocked by SABLES as I might have been earlier. I rather like that burnt sugar note! Thanks to you AND to Sweetgrass!

I bought a decant of this over a year ago but have never worn it. Will make a mental note to do so this fall.

Elizabeth Arden Sunflower, because sunflowers are a major cash crop around here (though not as big as hay, corn, sugar beets, barley, and marijuana). Sometimes you see a whole golden field of them. They also bloom along the roadside this time of year.

Oh, I haven’t smelled this one in a long time! Every year my grandkids and I plant the giant ones in the middle of the veggie garden and they can be seen from inside the bedroom windows. When the goldfinches in their bright yellow summer plumage visit to enjoy the seeds hanging from the heavy heads in the late afternoon sunshine, it’s a sight to behold. At the end of the season, we leave some seeds for the birds, harvest some to roast and enjoy ourselves, and save some for next year’s planting. And so the cycle of life continues . . .

Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes.

That has to be one of the best fragrance names of all time. It’s like a poem or a prayer. Love it.

SOTD = PdE Tabac Tabou 2015

On theme with hay and tobacco notes. I have a partial bottle (as I split this a year ago) and don’t wear it often and when I do, I only use 2 spritzes. This is pretty good and strong stiff. PdE is supposed to issue a limited edition each year., but it looks like there’s still 2015 stock left. As good as it is now, I wonder if it will get better with age or should I use it all up and switch to the new one when it becomes available? There’s probably no need to rush to purchase despite its LE designation.

I enjoyed this week’s challenge as it made me think more. I have more on theme perfumes lned up and may just keep gong with this theme without repeating. I must wear Angel Muse at some point!

Re: Harvest Moon. I saw the moon this morning. It was T H I S B I G. I’m not natural science geeky and won’t stay up to watch the eclipse.

Re: tomorrow – it is half-St. Patrick’s Day, are you celebrating? I am going to a restaurant tomorrow that will have traditional St. Patty’s Day food on the menu!

Now I need to read what everyone wore today!

I would think the Tabac Tabou would age well and improve, since there’s no citrus top notes that are likely to go off.

We are having a big family fund-raiser tomorrow afternoon for an organization I belong to, complete with catered Irish food and Irish music. I’ll definitely need to choose a green fragrance, most likely, Balmain Vent Vert, which is probably the greenest scent I own, with its giant bladt of galbanum.

    NST is gloriously scented today.

I’m sniffing Missoni spritzed on a tissue, impatiently waiting for the gianduja to show up. Chocolate + hazelnuts = delicious. Thanks to Lindaloo for the reminder to get this one out today.

Alas, my nose felt tired this morning, so today I am otherwise unscented.

Happy weekend and harvest moon to everyone.

    Waft on!

I saw an ad for Missoni in a recent magazine. Is it a reissue of the original or something altogether new? Anyone know?

There is a newer Missoni that smells of pear and flowers. The older one is flowers, chocolate, and hazelnut.

I went with Amouage Interlude Woman, although I can’t say I smell the walnut. Actually, I can’t smell most of the notes other people get, including the kiwi and honey and vanilla. What little sweetness I get is from the immortelle, and it smells very herbal to me, as does the fragrance overall. If I squint, I can make out some coffee. I’d tried it once before, and I suppose I did find it a bit chaotic, as promised by the ad copy. I thought maybe trying to focus on a particular note might help me make sense of it. Interlude isn’t unpleasant at all, but I feel as though I don’t really get it.

And I discovered something interesting when I was looking up the notes and skimming reviews, etc.: Fragrancenet currently has Amouage samples, cheap. (No affiliation.) I was very bad and went ahead and ordered everything they had that I’d particularly wanted to try. (Really, in the long run, it counts as saving money, surely. Almost certainly. I’m at least 51% convinced.)

Back later to read everything. Have a great weekend, everybody!

Donatella approves of what you did. If it saves you from buying blind, it’s free. Also, I think samples bought at a discount is perfumath free.
